  • Can I use Server Monitor with a non-server Mac?

    - by Chris
I have a computer I use as a simple file and web server. I am simply desiring to be able to monitor load, traffic, memory usage, etc via Server Monitor. I have also downloaded an app for my iPhone which does the same thing, but it uses the same protocol that Server Monitor does. Is it possible to get Server Monitor to recognize my non-server box as a server so I can monitor this information? For reference, I am running 10.4.ll on this PPC box. Thanks in advance!

  • How to configure my web server for public and development service

    - by Steve
I have one and only one web server, which runs Windows Server 2008 and wamp. Now I would like to setup SVN on the server so I can program the trunk version of the website. Every time I branch a version and put it to public. While developing on the trunk version, I also want to be able to test it. The web server has 5 IPs so I can use one IP for public website(the branch) and another IP for trunk development test. I believe one wamp server can only handle one 80 port request thus can only handle one website. How can I configure the server so it can handle one IP request and direct to my branch and handle another IP request and direct to my trunk?

  • Connecting via url to a server that is on the same network as me

    - by Axehead
Good day, I'm having problems with the ftp server I've just set up. I've already managed to configure my modem and wireless router to open up port 21 and setup ftp in my server. But It seems that when I try to connect to it when I'm in the same network as the server via URL, (ftp://mydomain.com) it redirects me to the modem's web interface. But then when I try to connect to it outside the network using a different internet connection. It succeeds. It also succeeds when I'm in the same network and I go to ftp://192.168.., the server's local IP. Am I supposed to adjust something in the modem or router? Or is this a different problem altogether? BTW I'm using Windows Server 2008 r2 as my server's OS and using IIS for ftp.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 Server monitor goes into sleep mode (no display) after fresh install

    - by xamox
For some reason I can boot and either use Ubuntu 12.04 server edition, or desktop version. I can live boot the disk, I can go through the installer, or even use the ubuntu alternate installer. But for some reason after the install completes and I reboot the monitor seems to go back into sleep mode and then never loads the command prompt. This is on an industrial adlink MXE-1300 PC. I've installed ubuntu server fine on other models of adlink machines but this one doesn't want to seem to play nice. To me it seems like if it was a video card issue than I could never even load the installer or run ubuntu in live mode. Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

  • Recommend a web file sharing software please

    - by Baczek
I'm looking for a web platform to put company files at. My requirements are: should be accessible via a browser should be open source must be installable (dropbox is a no-go) must have an option to put a access time limit on a file must perform garbage collection automatically after a file expires must be able to mark files as public or private an option to protect a file via a pin-code for users without accounts in the system would be nice to have The problem is I don't even know what to search for - all my googling results in either complete groupware solutions or p2p file sharing software. If such a thing doesn't exist, please don't hestitate to say so, so I can crawl to a corner and cry myself to sleep. TIA

  • Slow network file copy on Windows 7

    - by Jason V.
I wrote a program that uses xcopy to transfer files (usually between 1KB and 2MB) over our intranet. Usually, I am copying files from my host machine (Windows 7 x64) to a VMWare virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 (the VM is running on my host machine, if that matters). On Windows XP, the file transfers usually only require a few seconds to complete. But on my Windows 7 machine, the transfer of the first file (1.5 MB) takes around 1.5 minutes to complete. This is true whether I use xcopy, robocopy, or programmatically using File.Copy(). I noticed that if I use File.Copy, the first transfer is very slow and subsequent transfers are much faster. Any clue how I can speed up the process? Is there a setting in Windows 7 (or server 2008) that I could try?

  • Microsoft Releases Windows Server 2012

Windows Server 2012 offers expanded virtualization capabilities and works with Windows Azure, the software company's cloud platform. It can deliver more than 200 public, private and hybrid cloud services. The goal seems to be to deliver any application on any cloud. Rand Morimoto, president of Microsoft partner Convergent Computing, sees a number of major selling points for Windows Server 2012. For instance, its deduplication features can save a company 40 to 50 percent in storage space. Its automated IT management capabilities enable it to manage a large number of virtual machines. It can eve...

  • Local System Account in Windows Server 2008

    - by user31676
Hi, Have the security persmission or anything else changed for the Local System Account in Windows Server 2008 versus Windows Server 2003? We have a service, that logs on as the Local System Account, that creates folders on the server (same server as the service is installed). It works perfectly when installed on Windows Server 2003 however when installed in Windows Server 2008 the folders do not get created. It appears as if the Local System Account does not have persmission to create the folders. Any insight that anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

  • Rebuilding a file if files have changed

    - by Todd Strauch
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this. It seems trivial, but I'm not getting it. I have two files. If either of those two files changes, I want to rebuild one of them. Essentially: if file a changes or file b changes then file {"a": content => template('a.erb', 'b.erb'), } I know I can audit a file for change, I just don't know how to include that within a conditional. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Is SQL Server DRI (ON DELETE CASCADE) slow?

    - by Aaronaught
I've been analyzing a recurring "bug report" (perf issue) in one of our systems related to a particularly slow delete operation. Long story short: It seems that the CASCADE DELETE keys were largely responsible, and I'd like to know (a) if this makes sense, and (b) why it's the case. We have a schema of, let's say, widgets, those being at the root of a large graph of related tables and related-to-related tables and so on. To be perfectly clear, deleting from this table is actively discouraged; it is the "nuclear option" and users are under no illusions to the contrary. Nevertheless, it sometimes just has to be done. The schema looks something like this: Widgets | +--- Anvils (1:1) | | | +--- AnvilTestData (1:N) | +--- WidgetHistory (1:N) | +--- WidgetHistoryDetails (1:N) Nothing too scary, really. A Widget can be different types, an Anvil is a special type, so that relationship is 1:1 (or more accurately 1:0..1). Then there's a large amount of data - perhaps thousands of rows of AnvilTestData per Anvil collected over time, dealing with hardness, corrosion, exact weight, hammer compatibility, usability issues, and impact tests with cartoon heads. Then every Widget has a long, boring history of various types of transactions - production, inventory moves, sales, defect investigations, RMAs, repairs, customer complaints, etc. There might be 10-20k details for a single widget, or none at all, depending on its age. So, unsurprisingly, there's a CASCADE DELETE relationship at every level here. If a Widget needs to be deleted, it means something's gone terribly wrong and we need to erase any records of that widget ever existing, including its history, test data, etc. Again, nuclear option. Relations are all indexed, statistics are up to date. Normal queries are fast. The system tends to hum along pretty smoothly for everything except deletes. Getting to the point here, finally, for various reasons we only allow deleting one widget at a time, so a delete statement would look like this: DELETE FROM Widgets WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID Pretty simple, innocuous looking delete... that takes over 2 minutes to run, for a widget with no data! After slogging through execution plans I was finally able to pick out the AnvilTestData and WidgetHistoryDetails deletes as the sub-operations with the highest cost. So I experimented with turning off the CASCADE (but keeping the actual FK, just setting it to NO ACTION) and rewriting the script as something very much like the following: DECLARE @AnvilID int SELECT @AnvilID = AnvilID FROM Anvils WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID DELETE FROM AnvilTestData WHERE AnvilID = @AnvilID DELETE FROM WidgetHistory WHERE HistoryID IN ( SELECT HistoryID FROM WidgetHistory WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID) DELETE FROM Widgets WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID Both of these "optimizations" resulted in significant speedups, each one shaving nearly a full minute off the execution time, so that the original 2-minute deletion now takes about 5-10 seconds - at least for new widgets, without much history or test data. Just to be absolutely clear, there is still a CASCADE from WidgetHistory to WidgetHistoryDetails, where the fanout is highest, I only removed the one originating from Widgets. Further "flattening" of the cascade relationships resulted in progressively less dramatic but still noticeable speedups, to the point where deleting a new widget was almost instantaneous once all of the cascade deletes to larger tables were removed and replaced with explicit deletes. I'm using DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS and DBCC FREEPROCCACHE before each test. I've disabled all triggers that might be causing further slowdowns (although those would show up in the execution plan anyway). And I'm testing against older widgets, too, and noticing a significant speedup there as well; deletes that used to take 5 minutes now take 20-40 seconds. Now I'm an ardent supporter of the "SELECT ain't broken" philosophy, but there just doesn't seem to be any logical explanation for this behaviour other than crushing, mind-boggling inefficiency of the CASCADE DELETE relationships. So, my questions are: Is this a known issue with DRI in SQL Server? (I couldn't seem to find any references to this sort of thing on Google or here in SO; I suspect the answer is no.) If not, is there another explanation for the behaviour I'm seeing? If it is a known issue, why is it an issue, and are there better workarounds I could be using?

  • SQL server deadlock between INSERT and SELECT statement

    - by dtroy
    Hi! I've got a problem with multiple deadlocks on SQL server 2005. This one is between an INSERT and a SELECT statement. There are two tables. Table 1 and Table2. Table2 has Table1's PK (table1_id) as foreign key. Index on table1_id is clustered. The INSERT inserts a single row into table2 at a time. The SELCET joins the 2 tables. (it's a long query which might take up to 12 secs to run) According to my understanding (and experiments) the INSERT should acquire an IS lock on table1 to check referential integrity (which should not cause a deadlock). But, in this case it acquired an IX page lock The deadlock report: <deadlock-list> <deadlock victim="process968898"> <process-list> <process id="process8db1f8" taskpriority="0" logused="2424" waitresource="OBJECT: 5:789577851:0 " waittime="12390" ownerId="61831512" transactionname="user_transaction" lasttranstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:13.347" XDES="0x222a8250" lockMode="IX" schedulerid="1" kpid="3764" status="suspended" spid="52" sbid="0" ecid="0" priority="0" transcount="2" lastbatchstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:13.350" lastbatchcompleted="2010-04-16T07:10:13.347" clientapp=".Net SqlClient Data Provider" hostname="VIDEV01-B-ME" hostpid="3040" loginname="DatabaseName" isolationlevel="read uncommitted (1)" xactid="61831512" currentdb="5" lockTimeout="4294967295" clientoption1="671088672" clientoption2="128056"> <executionStack> <frame procname="DatabaseName.dbo.prcTable2_Insert" line="18" stmtstart="576" stmtend="1148" sqlhandle="0x0300050079e62d06e9307f000b9d00000100000000000000"> INSERT INTO dbo.Table2 ( f1, table1_id, f2 ) VALUES ( @p1, @p_DocumentVersionID, @p1 ) </frame> </executionStack> <inputbuf> Proc [Database Id = 5 Object Id = 103671417] </inputbuf> </process> <process id="process968898" taskpriority="0" logused="0" waitresource="PAGE: 5:1:46510" waittime="7625" ownerId="61831406" transactionname="INSERT" lasttranstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:12.717" XDES="0x418ec00" lockMode="S" schedulerid="2" kpid="1724" status="suspended" spid="53" sbid="0" ecid="0" priority="0" transcount="2" lastbatchstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:12.713" lastbatchcompleted="2010-04-16T07:10:12.713" clientapp=".Net SqlClient Data Provider" hostname="VIDEV01-B-ME" hostpid="3040" loginname="DatabaseName" isolationlevel="read committed (2)" xactid="61831406" currentdb="5" lockTimeout="4294967295" clientoption1="671088672" clientoption2="128056"> <executionStack> <frame procname="DatabaseName.dbo.prcGetList" line="64" stmtstart="3548" stmtend="11570" sqlhandle="0x03000500dbcec17e8d267f000b9d00000100000000000000"> <!-- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX...SELECT STATEMENT WITH Multiple joins including both Table2 table 1 and .... • Questions related to writing your own file downloader using multiple threads java

    - by Shekhar
Hello In my current company, i am doing a PoC on how we can write a file downloader utility. We have to use socket programming(TCP/IP) for downloading the files. One of the requirements of the client is that a file(which will be large in size) should be transfered in chunks for example if we have a file of 5Mb size then we can have 5 threads which transfer 1 Mb each. I have written a small application which downloads a file. You can download the eclipe project from http://www.fileflyer.com/view/QM1JSC0 A brief explanation of my classes FileSender.java This class provides the bytes of file. It has a method called sendBytesOfFile(long start, long end, long sequenceNo) which gives the number of bytes. import java.io.File; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.zip.CRC32; import org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils; public class FileSender { private static final String FILE_NAME = "C:\\shared\\test.pdf"; public ByteArrayWrapper sendBytesOfFile(long start, long end, long sequenceNo){ try { File file = new File(FILE_NAME); byte[] fileBytes = FileUtils.readFileToByteArray(file); System.out.println("Size of file is " +fileBytes.length); System.out.println(); System.out.println("Start "+start +" end "+end); byte[] bytes = getByteArray(fileBytes, start, end); ByteArrayWrapper wrapper = new ByteArrayWrapper(bytes, sequenceNo); return wrapper; } catch (IOException e) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } private byte[] getByteArray(byte[] bytes, long start, long end){ long arrayLength = end-start; System.out.println("Start : "+start +" end : "+end + " Arraylength : "+arrayLength +" length of source array : "+bytes.length); byte[] arr = new byte[(int)arrayLength]; for(int i = (int)start, j =0; i < end;i++,j++){ arr[j] = bytes[i]; } return arr; } public static long fileSize(){ File file = new File(FILE_NAME); return file.length(); } } Second Class is FileReceiver.java - This class receives the file. Small Explanation what this file does This class finds the size of the file to be fetched from Sender Depending upon the size of the file it finds the start and end position till the bytes needs to be read. It starts n number of threads giving each thread start, end, sequence number and a list which all the threads share. Each thread reads the number of bytes and creates a ByteArrayWrapper. ByteArrayWrapper objects are added to the list Then i have while loop which basically make sure that all threads have done their work finally it sorts the list based on the sequence number. then the bytes are joined, and a complete byte array is formed which is converted to a file. Code of File Receiver package com.filedownloader; import java.io.File; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Collections; import java.util.Comparator; import java.util.List; import java.util.zip.CRC32; import org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils; public class FileReceiver { public static void main(String[] args) { FileReceiver receiver = new FileReceiver(); receiver.receiveFile(); } public void receiveFile(){ long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); long numberOfThreads = 10; long filesize = FileSender.fileSize(); System.out.println("File size received "+filesize); long start = filesize/numberOfThreads; List<ByteArrayWrapper> list = new ArrayList<ByteArrayWrapper>(); for(long threadCount =0; threadCount<numberOfThreads ;threadCount++){ FileDownloaderTask task = new FileDownloaderTask(threadCount*start,(threadCount+1)*start,threadCount,list); new Thread(task).start(); } while(list.size() != numberOfThreads){ // this is done so that all the threads should complete their work before processing further. //System.out.println("Waiting for threads to complete. List size "+list.size()); } if(list.size() == numberOfThreads){ System.out.println("All bytes received "+list); Collections.sort(list, new Comparator<ByteArrayWrapper>() { @Override public int compare(ByteArrayWrapper o1, ByteArrayWrapper o2) { long sequence1 = o1.getSequence(); long sequence2 = o2.getSequence(); if(sequence1 < sequence2){ return -1; }else if(sequence1 > sequence2){ return 1; } else{ return 0; } } }); byte[] totalBytes = list.get(0).getBytes(); byte[] firstArr = null; byte[] secondArr = null; for(int i = 1;i<list.size();i++){ firstArr = totalBytes; secondArr = list.get(i).getBytes(); totalBytes = concat(firstArr, secondArr); } System.out.println(totalBytes.length); convertToFile(totalBytes,"c:\\tmp\\test.pdf"); long endTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); System.out.println("Total time taken with "+numberOfThreads +" threads is "+(endTime-startTime)+" ms" ); } } private byte[] concat(byte[] A, byte[] B) { byte[] C= new byte[A.length+B.length]; System.arraycopy(A, 0, C, 0, A.length); System.arraycopy(B, 0, C, A.length, B.length); return C; } private void convertToFile(byte[] totalBytes,String name) { try { FileUtils.writeByteArrayToFile(new File(name), totalBytes); } catch (IOException e) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } } Code of ByteArrayWrapper package com.filedownloader; import java.io.Serializable; public class ByteArrayWrapper implements Serializable{ private static final long serialVersionUID = 3499562855188457886L; private byte[] bytes; private long sequence; public ByteArrayWrapper(byte[] bytes, long sequenceNo) { this.bytes = bytes; this.sequence = sequenceNo; } public byte[] getBytes() { return bytes; } public long getSequence() { return sequence; } } Code of FileDownloaderTask import java.util.List; public class FileDownloaderTask implements Runnable { private List<ByteArrayWrapper> list; private long start; private long end; private long sequenceNo; public FileDownloaderTask(long start, long end, long sequenceNo,List<ByteArrayWrapper> list) { this.list = list; this.start = start; this.end = end; this.sequenceNo = sequenceNo; } @Override public void run() { ByteArrayWrapper wrapper = new FileSender().sendBytesOfFile(start, end, sequenceNo); list.add(wrapper); } } Questions related to this code 1) Does file downloading becomes fast when multiple threads is used? In this code i am not able to see the benefit. 2) How should i decide how many threads should i create ? 3) Are their any opensource libraries which does that 4) The file which file receiver receives is valid and not corrupted but checksum (i used FileUtils of common-io) does not match. Whats the problem? 5) This code gives out of memory when used with large file(above 100 Mb) i.e. because byte array which is created. How can i avoid? I know this is a very bad code but i have to write this in one day -:). Please suggest any other good way to do this? Thanks Shekhar

  • Task Scheduler not running .bat or .vbs successfully

    - by Django Reinhardt
Hi there, got this weird problem, which will hopefully have an obvious solution for some enlightened soul: We have several daily tasks we run via a .vbs script on our server (through the Task Scheduler), and for months it has been fine, but recently we've hit a problem. The .vbs script stopped successfully executing... but oddly it worked fine when ran manually! The error given in these circumstances was always "Timeout". We thought we try a little creative thinking, and run the .vbs another way: Via a .bat file. Again we hit weird issues, but with a little more debugging information, this time around. The .bat file is nothing more than... CScript "C:\location\script.vbs" > Log.txt But the Task Scheduler fails with the following error: 0x1: An incorrect function was called or an unknown function was called. The log.txt file says: CScript Error: Initialization of the Windows Script Host failed. (Not enough storage is available to process this command. ) But get this: The .bat file executes perfectly (vbs script and all) if it's executed with a double click! There's only a problem when it's run by Task Scheduler. What the hell? We're running Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) and yes, the Task Sheduler's results are the same whether the user is logged in or not. Also, the user that can run the scripts successfully manually, is also the same user that runs the scripts in Task Scheduler. Thanks for any help for this weird problem!

  • Shared Files stuck locked even after closing all sessions

    - by Chris S
We run a business app from a shared network drive (has to be this way). When I go to do updates it complains that files are locked. Generally there are open sessions from people who left their computer on, but with no locks on files; there aren't necessarily always sessions open when it complains about locked files. If I close these sessions they disappear. I say "disappear" because I suspect they're actually hanging open. If I try to restart the Server service, it hangs on stopping. Restarting the whole server (it's a VM) unlocks the files. The Server is a Windows 2008 R2 Ent VM running on Hyper-V; the share is accessed through DFS. Offline Files and caching are disabled (Share and GPO). All clients are Win7. Nothing has SP1 yet. Any ideas on what causes the file locks to hang? Any ideas for a solution other than rebooting the server every time?

  • Running batch file through a service.

    - by wallz
I'm trying to schedule a batch file to run through a third party application, however the output file doesn't get created in the directory. If I run the .BAT file from the command line, it works and the file gets created. Also using the Windows Schedule will also succeed. Basically, the 3rd party software will schedule the .BAT file and it shows success within the 3rd party user interface. The difference between running from the command prompt and the software, is that the software will use its Windows service to launch the batch. The 3rd party software will show success since it was able to successfully call the .BAT file to run, however it has no control of the other EXE's that's being called within the script. I'm able to run a simple .BAT file in the 3rd party software, for example a copy command. The .BAT I'm having problems with calls a compiled EXE which launches Excel to create a file to a location. The .bat file calls something.exe, which then calls Excel.exe: C:\something.exe -o D:\filename.xlsm C:\filename.xlsm refresh_pivot Do you think it's a permissions issue? I used Process Monitor to verify any Access Denied errors but everything seems to be working according to the trace. It worked on a non-64-bit OS, I'm currently using Win2008 64-bit.

  • How to make Firefox file associations consistent with Ubuntu file associations?

    - by wbharding
This seems to be a pretty commonly Google question, but one for which there are no answers. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/firefox-download-mime-types-378902 http://www.birkit.com/content/kubuntu-linux/internet/firefox/fix-file-associations-in-firefox.html Being three links amongst the many. The gist of what I want to accomplish is to have Firefox understand the file associations I download without me having to manually map all of them myself. Gnome knows the file extensions, so I would have expected that Firefox could just use the already-known file mappings there to open the right stuff (as I presume Chrome does). But it doesn't. At least not for me, using Firefox 4, and not by default. When I click on a downloaded file right now, Firefox always has to ask me what application should be used to open the file. A handful of Google results tell me that I can reassociate my file extensions by deleting ~/.mozilla/firefox/[profile name]/mimeTypes.rdf, but while deleting that file does in fact result in a new mimeTypes file being generated, the new mimeTypes is just as barren as the old one had been. Based on the amount of unanswered Qs on the Googlesphere, I know this is a very common problem for Ubuntu users, but it seems to be one for which nobody has chimed in with a good solution. Maybe Superuser can finally be the panacea for us all?

  • Expire Files In A Folder: Delete Files After x Days

    - by Brett G
I'm looking to make a "Drop Folder" in a windows shared drive that is accessible to everyone. I'd like files to be deleted automagically if they sit in the folder for more than X days. However, it seems like all methods I've found to do this, use the last modified date, last access time, or creation date of a file. I'm trying to make this a folder that a user can drop files in to share with somebody. If someone copies or moves files into here, I'd like the clock to start ticking at this point. However, the last modified date and creation date of a file will not be updated unless someone actually modifies the file. The last access time is updated too frequently... it seems that just opening a directory in windows explorer will update the last access time. Anyone know of a solution to this? I'm thinking that cataloging the hash of files on a daily basis and then expiring files based on hashes older than a certain date might be a solution.... but taking hashes of files can be time consuming. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Note: I've already looked at quite a lot of answers on here... looked into File Server Resource Monitor, powershell scripts, batch scripts, etc. They still use the last access time, last modified time or creation time... which, as described, do not fit the above needs.

  • Programmatically use a server as the Build Server for multiple Project Collections

Important: With this post you create an unsupported scenario by Microsoft. It will break your support for this server with Microsoft. So handle with care. I am the administrator an a TFS environment with a lot of Project Collections. In the supported configuration of Microsoft 2010 you need one Build Controller per Project Collection, and it is not supported to have multiple Build Controllers installed. Jim Lamb created a post how you can modify your system to change this behaviour. But since I have so many Project Collections, I automated this with the API of TFS. When you install a new build server via the UI, you do the following steps Register the build service (with this you hook the windows server into the build server environment) Add a new build controller Add a new build agent So in pseudo code, the code would look like foreach (projectCollection in GetAllProjectCollections) {       CreateNewWindowsService();       RegisterService();       AddNewController();       AddNewAgent(); } The following code fragements show you the most important parts of the method implementations. Attached is the full project. CreateNewWindowsService We create a new windows service with the SC command via the Diagnostics.Process class:             var pi = new ProcessStartInfo("sc.exe")                         {                             Arguments =                                 string.Format(                                     "create \"{0}\" start= auto binpath= \"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\\Tools\\TfsBuildServiceHost.exe              /NamedInstance:{0}\" DisplayName= \"Visual Studio Team Foundation Build Service Host ({1})\"",                                     serviceHostName, tpcName)                         };            Process.Start(pi);             pi.Arguments = string.Format("failure {0} reset= 86400 actions= restart/60000", serviceHostName);            Process.Start(pi); RegisterService The trick in this method is that we set the NamedInstance static property. This property is Internal, so we need to set it through reflection. To get information on these you need nice Microsoft friends and the .Net reflector .             // Indicate which build service host instance we are using            typeof(BuildServiceHostUtilities).Assembly.GetType("Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Config.BuildServiceHostProcess").InvokeMember("NamedInstance",              System.Reflection.BindingFlags.NonPublic | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.SetProperty | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Static, null, null, new object[] { serviceName });             // Create the build service host            serviceHost = buildServer.CreateBuildServiceHost(serviceName, endPoint);            serviceHost.Save();             // Register the build service host            BuildServiceHostUtilities.Register(serviceHost, user, password); AddNewController and AddNewAgent Once you have the BuildServerHost, the rest is pretty straightforward. There are methods on the BuildServerHost to modify the controllers and the agents                 controller = serviceHost.CreateBuildController(controllerName);                 agent = controller.ServiceHost.CreateBuildAgent(agentName, buildDirectory, controller);                controller.AddBuildAgent(agent); You have now seen the highlights of the application. If you need it and want to have sample information when you work in this area, download the app TFS2010_RegisterBuildServerToTPCs

  • Django-pyodbc SQL Server/freetds server connection problems on linux

    - by wizard
Error: ('IM002', '[IM002] [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified (0) (SQLDriverConnectW)') I'm migrating from developing on a windows development machine to Linux machine in production and I'm having issues with the freetds driver. As far as I can tell that error message means it can't find the driver. I can connect via the cli via sqsh and tsql. I've setup my settings.py as such. 'bc2db': { 'ENGINE': 'sql_server.pyodbc', 'NAME': 'DataTEST', 'USER': 'appuser', 'PASSWORD': 'PASS', 'HOST': 'bc2.domain.com', 'options': { 'driver': 'FreeTDS', } }, Does anyone have any SQL Server experience with django? do I have to use a dns? (how would I format that?)

  • Investigation: Can different combinations of components effect Dataflow performance?

    - by jamiet
Introduction The Dataflow task is one of the core components (if not the core component) of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and often the most misunderstood. This is not surprising, its an incredibly complicated beast and we’re abstracted away from that complexity via some boxes that go yellow red or green and that have some lines drawn between them. Example dataflow In this blog post I intend to look under that facade and get into some of the nuts and bolts of the Dataflow Task by investigating how the decisions we make when building our packages can affect performance. I will do this by comparing the performance of three dataflows that all have the same input, all produce the same output, but which all operate slightly differently by way of having different transformation components. I also want to use this blog post to challenge a common held opinion that I see perpetuated over and over again on the SSIS forum. That is, that people assume adding components to a dataflow will be detrimental to overall performance. Its not surprising that people think this –it is intuitive to think that more components means more work- however this is not a view that I share. I have always been of the opinion that there are many factors affecting dataflow duration and the number of components is actually one of the less important ones; having said that I have never proven that assertion and that is one reason for this investigation. I have actually seen evidence that some people think dataflow duration is simply a function of number of rows and number of components. I’ll happily call that one out as a myth even without any investigation!  The Setup I have a 2GB datafile which is a list of 4731904 (~4.7million) customer records with various attributes against them and it contains 2 columns that I am going to use for categorisation: [YearlyIncome] [BirthDate] The data file is a SSIS raw format file which I chose to use because it is the quickest way of getting data into a dataflow and given that I am testing the transformations, not the source or destination adapters, I want to minimise external influences as much as possible. In the test I will split the customers according to month of birth (12 of those) and whether or not their yearly income is above or below 50000 (2 of those); in other words I will be splitting them into 24 discrete categories and in order to do it I shall be using different combinations of SSIS’ Conditional Split and Derived Column transformation components. The 24 datapaths that occur will each input to a rowcount component, again because this is the least resource intensive means of terminating a datapath. The test is being carried out on a Dell XPS Studio laptop with a quad core (8 logical Procs) Intel Core i7 at 1.73GHz and Samsung SSD hard drive. Its running SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows 7. The Variables Here are the three combinations of components that I am going to test:     One Conditional Split - A single Conditional Split component CSPL Split by Month of Birth and income category that will use expressions on [YearlyIncome] & [BirthDate] to send each row to one of 24 outputs. This next screenshot displays the expression logic in use: Derived Column & Conditional Split - A Derived Column component DER Income Category that adds a new column [IncomeCategory] which will contain one of two possible text values {“LessThan50000”,”GreaterThan50000”} and uses [YearlyIncome] to determine which value each row should get. A Conditional Split component CSPL Split by Month of Birth and Income Category then uses that new column in conjunction with [BirthDate] to determine which of the same 24 outputs to send each row to. Put more simply, I am separating the Conditional Split of #1 into a Derived Column and a Conditional Split. The next screenshots display the expression logic in use: DER Income Category         CSPL Split by Month of Birth and Income Category       Three Conditional Splits - A Conditional Split component that produces two outputs based on [YearlyIncome], one for each Income Category. Each of those outputs will go to a further Conditional Split that splits the input into 12 outputs, one for each month of birth (identical logic in each). In this case then I am separating the single Conditional Split of #1 into three Conditional Split components. The next screenshots display the expression logic in use: CSPL Split by Income Category         CSPL Split by Month of Birth 1& 2       Each of these combinations will provide an input to one of the 24 rowcount components, just the same as before. For illustration here is a screenshot of the dataflow containing three Conditional Split components: As you can these dataflows have a fair bit of work to do and remember that they’re doing that work for 4.7million rows. I will execute each dataflow 10 times and use the average for comparison. I foresee three possible outcomes: The dataflow containing just one Conditional Split (i.e. #1) will be quicker There is no significant difference between any of them One of the two dataflows containing multiple transformation components will be quicker Regardless of which of those outcomes come to pass we will have learnt something and that makes this an interesting test to carry out. Note that I will be executing the dataflows using dtexec.exe rather than hitting F5 within BIDS. The Results and Analysis The table below shows all of the executions, 10 for each dataflow. It also shows the average for each along with a standard deviation. All durations are in seconds. I’m pasting a screenshot because I frankly can’t be bothered with the faffing about needed to make a presentable HTML table. It is plain to see from the average that the dataflow containing three conditional splits is significantly faster, the other two taking 43% and 52% longer respectively. This seems strange though, right? Why does the dataflow containing the most components outperform the other two by such a big margin? The answer is actually quite logical when you put some thought into it and I’ll explain that below. Before progressing, a side note. The standard deviation for the “Three Conditional Splits” dataflow is orders of magnitude smaller – indicating that performance for this dataflow can be predicted with much greater confidence too. The Explanation I refer you to the screenshot above that shows how CSPL Split by Month of Birth and salary category in the first dataflow is setup. Observe that there is a case for each combination of Month Of Date and Income Category – 24 in total. These expressions get evaluated in the order that they appear and hence if we assume that Month of Date and Income Category are uniformly distributed in the dataset we can deduce that the expected number of expression evaluations for each row is 12.5 i.e. 1 (the minimum) + 24 (the maximum) divided by 2 = 12.5. Now take a look at the screenshots for the second dataflow. We are doing one expression evaluation in DER Income Category and we have the same 24 cases in CSPL Split by Month of Birth and Income Category as we had before, only the expression differs slightly. In this case then we have 1 + 12.5 = 13.5 expected evaluations for each row – that would account for the slightly longer average execution time for this dataflow. Now onto the third dataflow, the quick one. CSPL Split by Income Category does a maximum of 2 expression evaluations thus the expected number of evaluations per row is 1.5. CSPL Split by Month of Birth 1 & CSPL Split by Month of Birth 2 both have less work to do than the previous Conditional Split components because they only have 12 cases to test for thus the expected number of expression evaluations is 6.5 There are two of them so total expected number of expression evaluations for this dataflow is 6.5 + 6.5 + 1.5 = 14.5. 14.5 is still more than 12.5 & 13.5 though so why is the third dataflow so much quicker? Simple, the conditional expressions in the first two dataflows have two boolean predicates to evaluate – one for Income Category and one for Month of Birth; the expressions in the Conditional Split in the third dataflow however only have one predicate thus they are doing a lot less work. To sum up, the difference in execution times can be attributed to the difference between: MONTH(BirthDate) == 1 && YearlyIncome <= 50000 and MONTH(BirthDate) == 1 In the first two dataflows YearlyIncome <= 50000 gets evaluated an average of 12.5 times for every row whereas in the third dataflow it is evaluated once and once only. Multiply those 11.5 extra operations by 4.7million rows and you get a significant amount of extra CPU cycles – that’s where our duration difference comes from. The Wrap-up The obvious point here is that adding new components to a dataflow isn’t necessarily going to make it go any slower, moreover you may be able to achieve significant improvements by splitting logic over multiple components rather than one. Performance tuning is all about reducing the amount of work that needs to be done and that doesn’t necessarily mean use less components, indeed sometimes you may be able to reduce workload in ways that aren’t immediately obvious as I think I have proven here. Of course there are many variables in play here and your mileage will most definitely vary. I encourage you to download the package and see if you get similar results – let me know in the comments. The package contains all three dataflows plus a fourth dataflow that will create the 2GB raw file for you (you will also need the [AdventureWorksDW2008] sample database from which to source the data); simply disable all dataflows except the one you want to test before executing the package and remember, execute using dtexec, not within BIDS. If you want to explore dataflow performance tuning in more detail then here are some links you might want to check out: Inequality joins, Asynchronous transformations and Lookups Destination Adapter Comparison Don’t turn the dataflow into a cursor SSIS Dataflow – Designing for performance (webinar) Any comments? • Unable to send email using 3rd party server ( IIS 7, Windows Server 2008, ASP.NET )

    - by Reed
Hello All, I am using IIS 7 on Server 2008. I just tried migrating my app from an older platform - everything works fine, except the email feature. This is my config: < mailSettings > < smtp from="[email protected]" deliveryMethod="Network" > < network host="mail.xyz.com" port="25" userName="[email protected]" password="123" /> < / smtp > < /mailSettings > Whenever I need to send an email I use: SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient(); smtp.Send(email); The funny thing is I get absolutely no errors, however the email is never sent. The outbound firewall ruleset allows SMTP traffic. Any idea what I did wrong?

  • Is SSIS able to query flat files from another Windows Server?

    - by atricapilla
I pretty new SQL Server Integration Server (SSIS) user. Is SSIS able to query data from text files located in another Windows Server? I mean that when SSIS is installed on Windwos Server A, is SSIS able to query data from e.g. one folder containing text files in Windows Server B (under same domain)? I have used only SAP BO Data Integrator ETL tool and it cannot query flat files from another Server: during execution, all files must be located on the Job Server machine that executes the job.

  • Delphi: how to efficently read a big binary file, converting it to hexadecimal for passing it as a v

    - by user193655
I need to convert a binary file (a zip file) into hexadecimal representation, to then send it to sql-server as a varbinary(max) function parameter. A full example (using a very small file!) is: 1) my file contains the following bits 000011110000111 2) I need a procedure to QUICKLY convert it to 0F0F 3) I will call a sql server function passing 0x0F0F as parameter The problem is that I have large files (up to 100MB, even if average file size is 100KB files are possible), so I need the fastest way to do this. Otherwise stated: I need to create the string '0x'+BinaryDataInHexadecimalRepresentation in the most efficient way. Related question: passing hexadecimal data to sql server

  • SQL SERVER – FIX ERROR – Cannot connect to . Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)

    - by pinaldave
Just a day ago, I was doing small attempting to connect to my local SQL Server using IP 127.0.0.1. The IP is of my local machine and SQL Server is installed on the local box as well. However, whenever I try to connect to the server it gave me following strange error. Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1. Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) The reason was indeed strange as I was trying to connect from local box to local box and it said my login was from an untrusted domain. As my system is not part of any domain, this was really confusing to me. Another thing was that I have been always able to connect always using 127.0.0.1 to SQL Server and this was a bit strange to me. I started to think what did I change since it  last time I connected to SQL Server. Suddenly I remembered that I had modified my computer’s host file for some other purpose. Solution: I opened my host file and immediately added entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost. Once I added it I was able to reconnect to SQL Server as usual. The location of the host file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You will find file with the name hosts in it, make sure to open it with notepad. If you are part of a domain and your organization is using active directory, make sure that your account is added properly to active directory as well have proper security permissions to execute the task.
