  • First programming language: PHP, Ruby, Python?

    I've been a Web developer for over 5 years and am looking to start building more complex Web apps. Currently, I know HTML/CSS/Javascript but I feel it's time to start learning something else. I work with a lot of applications based on PHP. I created a vBulletin forum on my own time and I would definitely want to build off of that since it has gained a bit of popularity. I also work with Wordpress quite often. All of the software I work with tends to be based on PHP but I hear a lot of people say Ruby or Python is better. Since I'm starting out, I really don't care which one I learn but I want to start right. Any recommendations for someone with HTML/CSS/Javascript knowledge but wants to branch out?

  • Advice/suggestions for my first project PHP Classes

    Hi guys, Any advice is welcome! I have a very limited understanding of php classes but below is my starting point for the route I would like to take. The code is a reflection of what I see in my head and how I would like to go about business. Does my code even look ok, or am I way off base? What are your thoughts, how would you go about achieving such a task as form-validate-insertquery-sendmail-return messages and errors?     Hello Guys, I'm trying to figure how to config StructureMap for ASP.NET MVC3 I've already using NuGet and I notice that it creates App_Start Folder with a cs file named as StructuremapMVC, so I check it and notice that is the same code but simplified that will be written manually on App_Start section placed on Global.asax...     I've been reading Metaprogramming Ruby and the object model like the chicken or egg dilemma. In Ruby 1.8, the Object class is an instance of Class. Module's superclass is Object and is an instance of Class. Class' superclass is Module, and it is an instance of Class (self-referential). Say class SomeClass; end is defined somewhere; SomeClass is an instance of Class, however its superclass is Object. Why does an instance of Class have Object as the superclass instead of nil? Also, if Object is to exist, then Class has to exist, but then Module has to exist, but for Module to exist Object has to exist. How are these classes created?

  • qTip pop ups come in from top left of screen (on first load)

    Hi, not sure if i'm set things up incorrectly - I don't seem to see anyone else with this problem, but my qTip popups (all ajax loaded content) are loading quite erratically, in that they are often animating in from off screen before appearing in the correct position.     I am currently achieving the desired outcome with two PHP statements: $thisBlarg = $xmlResource->xpath('//blarg[@ID='.$someBlargID.']'); echo $thisBlarg[0]->name; But, not wanting to settle for second best, I'd really prefer this to be one statement, but PHP doesn't like this: echo $xmlResource->xpath('//blarg[@ID='.$someBlargID.']')[0]->name; And for good reason. But I can't find a way to force an xpath query to return the result directly. Any suggestions?

    I’m new (only two weeks old) in Jquery, so please bear with me. I know that a very similar question was asked some time ago but I do not know how to adapt the answer to my problem. I have a very wide multicolumn layout something like this: | aaaa | bbbb | cccc | … | | aaaa | b | cc | … | | aaa | cccc | ddd | … | The code looks like: <div id="container"> <p>aaaaaaaaaaa</p> <p>bbbbb</p> <p>ccccccccccc</p> <p>dddddddddd</p> ... <p>xxxxxx</p> </div> There is no vertical scrolling and the container width is set in such a way that only two columns are shown. The user scrolls left or right to see the relevant text. What I want is to get the position currently on display, store it (maybe in a cookie) and retrieve it the next time the user opens the page. I think that I need a way of finding out what paragraph is currently the left-top most, but other suggestions are very welcome. Any ideas? btw: this is an internal project, so Mozilla only :-) Thanks Lolo

    Hi All, Here's what I want to do. I have 2 strings and I want to determine if one string is a permutation of another. I was thinking to simply remove the characters from string A from string B to determine if any characters are left. If no, then it passes. However, I need to make sure that only 1 instance of each letter is removed (not all occurrences) unless there are multiple letters in the word. An example: String A: cant String B: connect Result: -o-nec- Experimenting with NSString and NSScanner has yielded no results so far.
