    I'm considering using postgreSQL 8.4x db on windows/Mac for development and linux for production. wondering what front-end tools are out there that are comparable to Toad (for Oracle) ? PostgreSQL comes with PgAdminIII. It's OK but I feel there might be something better than that. I prefer free or open source but if something is NOT too expensive(we are a NON-PROFIT), would not mind evaluating. minimal tools that I want 1) connection manager 2) Nice SQL Editor 3) Explain Plan 4) help with SQL embedding into various languages. 5) E-R diagrams would be good but this would not be a killer feature for me. Anything work for you guys ? Will be using java 6 to build the application(s) if that is relevant at all. Thank you,

    Hi, There is a time represented in MJD and BCD format with 5 bytes .I am wondering what is the recommended format to save this date-time in the sqlite database so that user can search against it ? My first attempt is to save it just as it is, that is a 5 bytes string. The user will use the same format to search and the result will be converted to unix time by the user with following code. However, later, I was suggested to save the time in the integer - the UTC time, for example. But I can not find a standard way to do the conversion.     I have a web application running on Google App Engine (GAE) for JAVA. I'm authenticating the client at the Servlet layer but would like to make the client information available to my business and data layers without having to pass the client object through the arguments of every single function. I'm considering setting up a "session" type object using ThreadLocal. That way any function can just say something like: CurrentUser.getRoles(); Is this a good way to do this or is there something else that is a more accepted solution? Thanks!

I can't use the typical issue management system such as Lighthouse, FogBugz because each test is written as a ticket and 20 to 30 tickets need to be duplicated (w/ no history) every time we start a quality cycle. Do any (hosted) sites exist? We're currently using a Google Spreadsheet so it can be collaboratively edited.

    I have a basic pagination system that looks something like that: First | < Previous | 1, 2, [3], 4, 5 ... 100, 101, 102 | Next > | Last Nothing fancy really. I am looking at various plugins to improve the way the user would browse this, but so far I haven't found anything really new or interesting except: http://tympanus.net/jPaginate/ : interesting way of browsing between pages but still very classical in the realization http://cpojer.net/Scripts/Pagination/ : totally new way of doing pagination, but the implementation isn't perfect and it's not really usable. Do you guys have ideas on how I could improve the way my users browse through navigation? Are there any good jQuery plugins out there already doing that?

    As many of you know, Russia has eleven time zones, and has (or will) cut two of them. It is possible that they may end daylight savings time altogether. Does anyone know if they have cut two time zones, and if daylight savings is now a thing of the past? If so, does daylight savings end in all time zones, or just some? I maintain some software that may need to be patched and can't find two news sites that agree on if they have, or have not implemented these changes.

    I work for a small E-Commerce shop and we are looking for a process that will handle resizing our product images dynamically. Currently our designers take high resolution photos, either provided by the manufactures or created in house, and alter them to fit various pages on our site. The designers are constantly resizing, cropping, altering compression levels, etc., of each product photo to fit the needs of the business. Being that our product line is updated frequently, this becomes a monotonous task. Abobe Scene7 does exactly what we are looking to do and the images are served up from a CDN. Unfortunately we found it to be too expensive. I'm curious to learn how others handle this process at their organizations. Does anyone know of any good 3rd party tools or other SAAS providers that can handle performing some basic image manipulation and serving them on the fly?

    Background Job gets mentioned a lot but all the tutorials I've seen seem to indicate that its for queuing jobs which are created by some external event such as a user clicking "Send mail". But what about when you have code that needs to scheduled to run every 30 seconds to listen for new messages from twitter? Normally rake is recommended for set in stone schedules but it inst so efficient for frequent jobs as it has to to load the entire rails app each time. Can anyone recommend anything for this situation?
