  • Looking for 2D Cross platform suggestions based on requirements specified

    - by MannyG
    I am an intermediate developer with minor experience on enterprise mobile applications for iphone, android and blackberry looking to build my first ever mobile game. I did a google search for some game dev forums and this popped up so I thought I would try posting here as I lack luck elsewhere. If you have ever heard of the game for the iphone and android platform entitled avatar fight then you will have an idea of the graphic capabilities I require. Basically the battles which are automated one sprite attacking another doing cool animations but all in 2d. My buddy and I have two motivations, one is to jump into mobile Dev as my experience is limited as is his so we would like some trending knowledge (html5 would be nice to learn) . The other is to make some money on the side, don't expect much but polishing the game and putting our all will hopefully reward us a bit. We have looked into corona engine, however a lot of people are saying it is limited in the graphics department, we are open to learning new languages like lua, c++, python etc. Others we have looked at include phonegap, rhomobile, unity, and the list goes on. I really have no idea what the pros and cons of these are but for a basic battle sequence and some mini games we want to chose the right one. Some more things that we will be doing include things like card games, side scrolling flying object based games, maybe fishing stuff. We want to start small with these minigames and work our way up to the idea we would like to implement in the future. We only want to work in 2D. So with these requirements please help me chose a platform to work on (cross platform is what we are ideally leaning towards). Please feel free to throw in some pieces of advice you may have for newbie game developers like myself too. Thank you for reading!

  • Trying to install Rmagick on Debian

    - by Janak
    One of things you need to do to get Rmagick installed apt-get install libmagick9-dev When I try that I get the following errors Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libmagick9-dev: Depends: libjpeg62-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libbz2-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libtiff4-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libwmf-dev (>= 0.2.7-1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libz-dev Depends: libpng12-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libfreetype6-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libexif-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libdjvulibre-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: librsvg2-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libgraphviz-dev but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages I don't know what to do to fix this? • Full screen blackout using allegro in codeblocks

    - by Armando Ortiz
    I'm very interested in game programming and I'm taking my first steps alone. So I installed allegro. Although Dev-C++ didn't work, Code::Blocks compiled successfully. I started out with this basic program: #include <allegro.h> int main(){ allegro_init(); install_keyboard(); set_gfx_mode( GFX_AUTODETECT, 640, 480, 0, 0); readkey(); return 0; } END_OF_MAIN(); The problem comes in when I try to run it. It opens the little window as always, but rapidly blacks out my whole screen. I press any key and it takes me back to the little window telling me that it finished, which means the program worked. But I try any other program with allegro, like: #include <allegro.h> int x = 10; int y = 10; int main(){ allegro_init(); install_keyboard(); set_gfx_mode( GFX_AUTODETECT, 640, 480, 0, 0); while ( !key[KEY_ESC] ){ clear_keybuf(); acquire_screen(); textout_ex( screen, font, " ", x, y, makecol( 0, 0, 0), makecol( 0, 0, 0) ); if (key[KEY_UP]) --y; else if (key[KEY_DOWN]) ++y; else if (key[KEY_RIGHT]) ++x; else if (key[KEY_LEFT]) --x; textout_ex( screen, font, "@", x, y, makecol( 255, 0, 0), makecol( 0, 0, 0) ); release_screen(); rest(50); } return 0; } END_OF_MAIN(); And the same thing happens over and over again! Is there something I'm doing wrong?

  • Evaluating code for a graph [migrated]

    - by mazen.r.f
    This is relatively long code. Please take a look at this code if you are still willing to do so. I will appreciate your feedback. I have spent two days trying to come up with code to represent a graph, calculating the shortest path using Dijkstra's algorithm. But I am not able to get the right result, even though the code runs without errors. The result is not correct and I am always getting 0. I have three classes: Vertex, Edge, and Graph. The Vertex class represents the nodes in the graph and it has id and carried (which carry the weight of the links connected to it while using Dijkstra's algorithm) and a vector of the ids belong to other nodes the path will go through before arriving to the node itself. This vector is named previous_nodes. The Edge class represents the edges in the graph and has two vertices (one in each side) and a width (the distance between the two vertices). The Graph class represents the graph. It has two vectors, where one is the vertices included in this graph, and the other is the edges included in the graph. Inside the class Graph, there is a method named shortest() that takes the sources node id and the destination and calculates the shortest path using Dijkstra's algorithm. I think that it is the most important part of the code. My theory about the code is that I will create two vectors, one for the vertices in the graph named vertices, and another vector named ver_out (it will include the vertices out of calculation in the graph). I will also have two vectors of type Edge, where one is named edges (for all the edges in the graph), and the other is named track (to temporarily contain the edges linked to the temporary source node in every round). After the calculation of every round, the vector track will be cleared. In main(), I've created five vertices and 10 edges to simulate a graph. The result of the shortest path supposedly is 4, but I am always getting 0. That means I have something wrong in my code. If you are interesting in helping me find my mistake and making the code work, please take a look. The way shortest work is as follow: at the beginning, all the edges will be included in the vector edges. We select the edges related to the source and put them in the vector track, then we iterate through track and add the width of every edge to the vertex (node) related to it (not the source vertex). After that, we clear track and remove the source vertex from the vector vertices and select a new source. Then we start over again and select the edges related to the new source, put them in track, iterate over edges in track, adding the weights to the corresponding vertices, then remove this vertex from the vector vertices. Then clear track, and select a new source, and so on. #include<iostream> #include<vector> #include <stdlib.h> // for rand() using namespace std; class Vertex { private: unsigned int id; // the name of the vertex unsigned int carried; // the weight a vertex may carry when calculating shortest path vector<unsigned int> previous_nodes; public: unsigned int get_id(){return id;}; unsigned int get_carried(){return carried;}; void set_id(unsigned int value) {id = value;}; // a vertex on the other side of the edge unsigned int weight; // the value of the edge ( or its weight ) public: unsigned int get_weight() {return weight;}; void set_weight(unsigned int value) {weight = value;}; • Ways to organize interface and implementation in C++

    - by Felix Dombek
    I've seen that there are several different paradigms in C++ concerning what goes into the header file and what to the cpp file. AFAIK, most people, especially those from a C background, do: foo.h class foo { private: int mem; int bar(); public: foo(); foo(const foo&); foo& operator=(foo); ~foo(); } foo.cpp #include foo.h foo::bar() { return mem; } foo::foo() { mem = 42; } foo::foo(const foo& f) { mem = f.mem; } foo::operator=(foo f) { mem = f.mem; } foo::~foo() {} int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { foo f; } However, my lecturers usually teach C++ to beginners like this: foo.h class foo { private: int mem; int bar() { return mem; } public: foo() { mem = 42; } foo(const foo& f) { mem = f.mem; } foo& operator=(foo f) { mem = f.mem; } ~foo() {} } foo.cpp #include foo.h int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { foo f; } // other global helper functions, DLL exports, and whatnot Originally coming from Java, I have also always stuck to this second way for several reasons, such as that I only have to change something in one place if the interface or method names change, and that I like the different indentation of things in classes when I look at their implementation, and that I find names more readable as foo compared to foo::foo. I want to collect pro's and con's for either way. Maybe there are even still other ways? One disadvantage of my way is of course the need for occasional forward declarations.

  • Architectural and Design Challenges with SOA

    With all of the hype about service oriented architecture (SOA) primarily through the use of web services, not much has been said about potential issues of using SOA in the design of an application. I am personally a fan of SOA, but it is not the solution for every application. Proper evaluation should be done on all requirements and use cases prior to deciding to go down the SOA road. It is important to consider how your application/service will handle the following perils as it executes. Example Challenges of SOA Network Connectivity Issues Handling Connectivity Issues Longer Processing/Transaction Times How many of us have had issues visiting our favorite web sites from time to time? The same issue will occur when using service based architecture especially if it is implemented using web services. Forcing applications to access services via a network connection introduces a lot of new failure points to the application. Potential failure points include: DNS issues, network hardware issues, remote server issues, and the lack of physical network connections. When network connectivity issues do occur, how are the service clients are implemented is very important. Should the client wait and poll the service until it is accessible again? If so what is the maximum wait time or number of attempts it should retry. Due to the fact of services being distributed across a network automatically increase the responsiveness of client applications due to the fact that processing time must now also include time to send and receive messages from called services. This could add nanoseconds to minutes per each request based on network load and server usage of the service provider. If speed highly desirable quality attribute then I would consider creating components that are hosted where the client application is located. References: Rader, Dave. (2002). • CakePHP in a subdirectory using nginx (Rewrite rules?)

    - by lhnz
    I managed to get this to work a while back, but on returning to the cakephp project I had started it seems that whatever changes I've made to nginx recently (or perhaps a recent update) have broken my rewrite rules. Currently I have: worker_processes 1; events { worker_connections 1024; } http { include mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; sendfile on; keepalive_timeout 65; server { listen 80; server_name localhost; location / { root html; index index.php index.html index.htm; } location /basic_cake/ { index index.php; if (-f $request_filename) { break; } if (!-f $request_filename) { rewrite ^/basic_cake/(.+)$ /basic_cake/index.php?url=$1 last; break; } } location /cake_test/ { index index.php; if (-f $request_filename) { break; } if (!-f $request_filename) { rewrite ^/cake_test/(.+)$ /cake_test/index.php?url=$1 last; break; } } # redirect server error pages to the static page /50x.html # error_page 500 502 503 504 /50x.html; location = /50x.html { root html; } # pass the PHP scripts to FastCGI server listening on 127.0.0.1:9000 # location ~ \.php$ { root html; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } } server { listen 8081; server_name localhost; root /srv/http/html/xsp; location / { index index.html index.htm index.aspx default.aspx; } location ~ \.(aspx|asmx|ashx|asax|ascx|soap|rem|axd|cs|config|dll)$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9001; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; } } } The problem that I have is that the css and images will not load from the webroot. Instead if I visit http://localhost/basic_cake/css/cake.generic.css, I get a page which tells me: CakePHP: the rapid development php framework Missing Controller Error: CssController could not be found.   • Modifying a gedit syntax highlighting file

    - by Oscar Saleta Reig
    I am trying to change a highlighting file from Gedit. I have modified the file /usr/share/gtksourceview-3.0/language-specs/fortran.lang because I want to change the cases in which the editor takes a statement as a comment. The problem I have is that when I choose the new highlighting scheme nothing highlights, it just remains as plain text. The file fortran.lang was opened with su permissions and I just copy-pasted everything into a new Gedit file and later saved it as fortran_enhanced.lang in the same folder. The changes I've done to the original file are these: Original fortran.lang file: <language id="fortran" _name="Fortran 95" version="2.0" _section="Sources"> <metadata> <property name="mimetypes">text/x-fortran</property> <property name="globs">*.f;*.f90;*.f95;*.for</property> <property name="line-comment-start">!</property> </metadata> <styles> <style id="comment" _name="Comment" map-to="def:comment"/> <style id="floating-point" _name="Floating Point" map-to="def:floating-point"/> <style id="keyword" _name="Keyword" map-to="def:keyword"/> <style id="intrinsic" _name="Intrinsic function" map-to="def:builtin"/> <style id="boz-literal" _name="BOZ Literal" map-to="def:base-n-integer"/> <style id="decimal" _name="Decimal" map-to="def:decimal"/> <style id="type" _name="Data Type" map-to="def:type"/> </styles> <default-regex-options case-sensitive="false"/> <definitions> <!-- Note: contains an hack to avoid considering ^COMMON a comment --> <context id="line-comment" style-ref="comment" end-at-line-end="true" class="comment" class-disabled="no-spell-check"> <start>!|(^[Cc](\b|[^OoAaYy]))</start> <include> <context ref="def:escape"/> <context ref="def:in-line-comment"/> </include> </context> (...) Modified fortran_enhanced.lang file: <!-- Note: changed language id and name --> <language id="fortran_enhanced" _name="Fortran 95 2.0" version="2.0" _section="Sources"> <metadata> <property name="mimetypes">text/x-fortran</property> <!-- Note: removed *.f and *.for from file extensions --> <property name="globs">*.f90;*.f95;</property> <property name="line-comment-start">!</property> </metadata> <styles> <style id="comment" _name="Comment" map-to="def:comment"/> <style id="floating-point" _name="Floating Point" map-to="def:floating-point"/> <style id="keyword" _name="Keyword" map-to="def:keyword"/> <style id="intrinsic" _name="Intrinsic function" map-to="def:builtin"/> <style id="boz-literal" _name="BOZ Literal" map-to="def:base-n-integer"/> <style id="decimal" _name="Decimal" map-to="def:decimal"/> <style id="type" _name="Data Type" map-to="def:type"/> </styles> <default-regex-options case-sensitive="false"/> <definitions> <!-- Note: I want comments only beginning with !, not C --> <context id="line-comment" style-ref="comment" end-at-line-end="true" class="comment" class-disabled="no-spell-check"> <start>!</start> <include> <context ref="def:escape"/> <context ref="def:in-line-comment"/> </include> </context> (...) I have read this question [ Custom gedit Syntax Highlighting for Dummies? ] and I tried to make the new fortran_enhanced.lang file readable with $ cd /usr/share/gtksourceview-3.0/language-specs $ sudo chmod 0644 fortran_enhanced.lang but it doesn't seem that made some difference. I have to say that I have never done a thing like this before and I don't even understand most of the language file, so I am open to every criticism, as I have been guided purely by intuition. Thank you in advanced!

  • Allocating memory inside a function and returning it back

    - by user2651062
    I want to pass a pointer to my function and allocate the memory to which this pointer points. I've read in other posts that I should pass a double pointer to this function and I did so, but I keep getting segmentation fault: #include <iostream> #include <stdlib.h> using namespace std; void allocate(unsigned char** t) { *t=(unsigned char*)malloc(3*sizeof(unsigned char)); if(*t == NULL) cout<<"Allcoation failed"<<endl; else for(int m=0;m<3;m++) *(t[m])=0; } int main() { unsigned char* t; allocate(&t); cout<<t[0]<<" "<<t[1]<<endl; return 0; } the result is always this: Segmentation fault (core dumped) I don't think that there's anything missing from this code. What could be wrong?

  • Why isn't DSM for unstructured memory done today?

    - by sinned
    Ages ago, Djikstra invented IPC through mutexes which then somehow led to shared memory (SHM) in multics (which afaik had the necessary mmap first). Then computer networks came up and DSM (distributed SHM) was invented for IPC between computers. So DSM is basically a not prestructured memory region (like a SHM) that magically get's synchronized between computers without the applications programmer taking action. Implementations include Treadmarks (inofficially dead now) and CRL. But then someone thought this is not the right way to do it and invented Linda & tuplespaces. Current implementations include JavaSpaces and GigaSpaces. Here, you have to structure your data into tuples. Other ways to achieve similar effects may be the use of a relational database or a key-value-store like RIAK. Although someone might argue, I don't consider them as DSM since there is no coherent memory region where you can put data structures in as you like but have to structure your data which can be hard if it is continuous and administration like locking can not be done for hard coded parts (=tuples, ...). Why is there no DSM implementation today or am I just unable to find one?

  • SubMain Ghost Doc Pro with SpellChecking

    - by TATWORTH
    SubMain have announced at http://community.submain.com/forums/2/1556/ShowThread.aspx#1556 that the next version of GhostDoc will include a VS2005/VS2008/VS2010 compatible spell checker. This replaces their existing spellchecker (http://submain.com/products/codespell.aspx)  which is being discontinued. If you buy GhostDoc Pro now (I urge you to as it helps tremendously in documenting both C# and VB.NET code) , be sure to include Licence Protection as it means you will get the next version that includes the spell-checker free! Why is a spell checker important? By spell checking all your comments, you will make your documentation much easier to read. This means that instead of you being distracted by typographic errors, your mind will be free to see errors in what has been written. Remember the next person that has to struggle to read your code could well be yourself! So be kind to your self. Do the following: Document whole source files in VB.NET of C# with GhostDoc Pro Run Stylecop and fix the issues it uncovers. Run the spellchecker (when it is available) Add remarks where necessary Specify in the project to produce XML documentation Compile the XML using Sandcastle to help files Review the help files and ask yourself if the explanations are sufficient.

    in the postgresql config file there is an option log_statement = 'mod' which causes CRUD statements to be logged. However this does not include the CRUD statements that are called from trigger functions, which means that following the log file is not useful to determine what changes are being made to the database data, if the 3rd part application has been making lots of changes using triggers. Is there some other option I can use to include trigger CRUD? alternatively, can I inspect the pg_xlog in real time using some tool? (xlogdump and xlogviewer do not work with version 8.4, i have tried)

  • Plesk Backup Best Practices?

    - by The MYYN
    My client utilizes Plesk (9.X) for Server Management. We're implementing a custom backup solution, which should include a complete restorable representation of the actual Plesk configuration (Emails, Domains, etc.). We have full access, since it is a dedicated server resembling these steps: Plesk offers some backups, but they do not include the actual content of the (sub-)domains. Browsing the docs and the internet, I haven't found much ideas on that problem. Our target is to have a disaster recovery scenario: Reinstall a clean OS (Ubuntu) from scratch. Install MySQL/PHP and dependencies (since this runs the app) Install a bare plesk Restore all domains + plesk configuration from an archive Continue operations ... Now steps 1, 2, 3 and 5 are trivial. But what are the best practices for step 4? A side questions: Are there any easy-to-use open source apps out there, to create and restore server-images (even on machines with an possible different hardware)? Thanks for your time and input.

  • bluetooth daemon not running at startup

    - by ffaxer
    I'm trying to connect a bluetooth mouse to my Xubuntu system using Blueman (v. 1.21) Problem seems to be bluetoothd not running at startup, so blueman refuses to start, only a dialog appears: "Bluez daemon is not running, blueman-manager cannot continue." On my system, bluetoothd will run only as root (sudo), so my current workaround is simply to sudo bluetoothd manually, which works fine but id like to have it run at startup so that my mouse is just working without any interaction from me, if possible. If i try to start bluetoothd as non-root it reports: Bluetooth deamon 4.91 Unable to get on D-Bus In the startup scripts i found the same bluetoothd script in all runlevels and init.d: DAEMON=/usr/sbin/bluetoothd test -f /usr/sbin/bluetoothd || exit 0 # bluetoothd normally starts up by udev rules. it needs dbus to function, log_progress_msg "bluetoothd" pkill -TERM bluetoothd || true log_progress_msg "bluetoothd" I looked in /etc/udev/rules.d/ but no reference to bluetoothd. Further i have already tried with no luck: Editing /etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf to include my user (essentially copying the part that was for root): I tried it while both keeping the root policy and without, still, no luck! Editing /etc/pam.d/common-session and /etc/pam.d/gdm to include the line: session optional pam_ck_connector.so In the case of common-session it was already there but with a "nox11" which i tried removing. No luck no luck. Btw, I'm confused as to which session manager I'm using, since i have both xfce4-session and gdm-session-worker running. Anyways, hope someone is savvy enough to figure it out or bring some hints, otherwise i sincerely apologize for wasting your time! I'll sign off with uname -a: Linux [mycompname] 3.0.0-9-lowlatency #12ppa1~natty1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 22 06:52:15 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Peace B)

  • How to start nginx via different port(other than 80)

    - by Zhao Peng
    Hi I am a newbie on nginx, I tried to set it up on my server(running Ubuntu 4), which already has apache running. So after I apt-get install it, I tried to start nginx. Then I get the message like this: Starting nginx: the configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf syntax is ok configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test is successful [emerg]: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) [emerg]: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) [emerg]: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) [emerg]: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) [emerg]: bind() to 0.0.0.0:80 failed (98: Address already in use) That makes sense as Apache is using port 80. Then I tried to modify nginx.conf, I reference some articles, so I changed it like so: server { listen 8080; location / { proxy_pass http://94.143.9.34:9500; proxy_set_header Host $host:8080; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header Via "nginx"; } After saving this and try to start nginx again, I still get the same error as previously. I cannot really find a related post about this, could any good people shred some light? Thanks in advance :) ========================================================================= I should post all the content in conf here: user www-data; worker_processes 1; error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log; pid /var/run/nginx.pid; events { worker_connections 1024; # multi_accept on; } http { include /etc/nginx/mime.types; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log; sendfile on; #tcp_nopush on; #keepalive_timeout 0; keepalive_timeout 65; tcp_nodelay on; gzip on; gzip_disable "MSIE [1-6]\.(?!.*SV1)"; include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; include /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/*; server { listen 81; location / { proxy_pass http://94.143.9.34:9500; proxy_set_header Host $host:81; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header Via "nginx"; } } } mail { See sample authentication script at: http://wiki.nginx.org/NginxImapAuthenticateWithApachePhpScript auth_http localhost/auth.php; pop3_capabilities "TOP" "USER"; imap_capabilities "IMAP4rev1" "UIDPLUS"; server { listen localhost:110; protocol pop3; proxy on; } server { listen localhost:143; protocol imap; proxy on; } } Basically, I changed nothing except adding the server part.

  • C Programming matrix

    - by Bilal Khan
    In this program the user enters the # of columns of the matrix and then the entries of the matrix. So, for example, if the user enters 2 for column # and 1 2 3 4 for entries then the program develops a 2 by 2 matrix with 1 2 3 4 as entries. My program works perfectly in such a case. However, if the user for example had only entered 1 2 3 then my program makes a matrix with garbage values. I would like the program in such a case to exit the program. It is a simple question, but it has me baffled. #include<stdio.h> #include<stdlib.h> int main() { int m,x, n, c = 0, d,k, matrix[10][10], transpose[10][10], product[10][10]; printf("Enter the number of columns of matrix "); scanf("%d",&m); if(m<=0){ printf("You entered a invalid value."); exit(0); } else{ printf("Enter the elements of matrix \n"); for( c = 0 ; c < 10 ; c++ ) { for( d = 0 ; d < m ; d++ ) { scanf("%d",&matrix[c][d]); if (matrix[c][d] == 99) // 'x' is character variable I declared to use as a break break; // c = c+1; } if (matrix[c][d] == 99) break; } } printf("\nHere is your matrix:\n"); int i; for(i=0;i<c;i++) { for(d=0;d<m;d++) { printf("%3d ",matrix[i][d]); } printf("\n"); }

  • cannot install matplotlib, freetype2 headers are ignored

    I want to install matplotlib via pip. There is a problem with freetype2.h REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES numpy: 1.6.2 freetype2: found, but unknown version (no pkg-config) * WARNING: Could not find 'freetype2' headers in any * of '.', './freetype2'. Somebody had a similar problem ( How to install matplotlib on OS X?), and it was suggested to install pkg-config first. I did that with macports, but I still get the same warning. I used find to look for the headers, and they are definitely present in: /opt/X11/include/ft2build.h /usr/X11/include/ft2build.h How can I use those files to install matplotlib?

  • Non-Obvious Topics to Learn for Game Development

    - by ashes999
    I've been writing games for around 10 years now (from QBasic to C# and everything in-between). I need to start stretching my skills into different areas. What are other, surprising topics I should read up on? Expected topics would include the usual suspects: Programming language of your choice Scripting language Source control Project management (or Agile) Graphics API Maybe some AI (A* path-finding?) Physics (projectile physics) Unit testing (automated testing) I'm looking for more esoteric topics; things that you don't expect to need to know, but if you do know them, they make a difference. This could include things like: Art skills (drawing, lighting, colouring, layout, etc.) Natural language processing The physics of sound (sound-waves, doppler effect, etc.) Personally, I feel that having technical art skills (eg. can make decent art-work if you can only come up with ideas; or, following Photoshop/GIMP tutorials) was the most beneficial for me. This is not intended to be an open-ended question; I'm looking for specific skills that helped you and you expect will continue to benefit you in the short- and long-term.

  • Limitations of the SharePoint join using CAML

    - by ybbest
    Limitation One In SharePoint 2010, you can join the primary list to a foreign list and include more than one field from the foreign list. However, the limitation is that the included fields from foreign list have to be the following type: Calculated (treated as plain text) ContentTypeId Counter Currency DateTime Guid Integer Note (one-line only) Number Text The above limitation also explains why you cannot include some types of the fields from the remote list when creating a lookup. Limitation Two When using CAML query to join SharePoint lists, there can be joins to multiple lists, multiple joins to the same list, and chains of joins. However, the limitations are only inner and left outer joins are permitted and the field in the primary list must be a Lookup type field that looks up to the field in the foreign list. Limitation Three The support for writing the JOIN query in CAML is very limited.I have to hand-code the CAML query to join the lists,not fun at all.Although some blogs post mentioned about using LINQ to SharePoint and get the CAML code from there , but I never get it to work.You can check this blog post  for this.Let me know if it works for you. • MySQL - Configuration

    - by Stuart Brierley
    Having previously detailed how to install MySQL Server, the next step is configuring MySQL. The MySQL configuration wizard can either be run immediately following installation from the MySQL installation wizard or manually from the Start Menu. Following the splash screen you can then choose whether to run a detailed or standard configuration. The detailed configuration allows you to create the optimal configuration for your specific machine, whereas the standard configuration creates a general configuration that can then be manually tuned. I chose detailed.   You are then asked to choose the type of server instance that is being configured. In this case it is a developer machine. Following this you are asked to choose the type of database usage that you expect on the server. I opted for multifunctional. You must then specify the location of the InnoDB tablespace.   Next specify the number of concurent connections to the server.   Now you must configure the networking options. I left the Strict mode enabled as this is the recommended option, but I disabled TCP/IP networking as I wanted to restrict this MySQL installation to the local machine only.   Set the character set that is best suited to your use - for me this was the default standard character set. Next up is the option to run MySQL as a service and whether or not to include the mysql dircetories in the windows PATH. I kept the install as a windows service option enabled, but unchecked the Launch MySQL server automatically option. This is because I only wanted MySQL running when I specifically want to use it. I also enabled the include in windows PATH option.   You can then change the security settings for the mysql installation. I opted to change the root password, disable root from local machines and disable annoymous access.   You are now ready to execute the configuration.   Once completed you should hopefully see the completed screen with lots of nice ticks against the various configuration tasks.

  • Finding header files

    - by rwallace
    A C or C++ compiler looks for header files using a strict set of rules: relative to the directory of the including file (if "" was used), then along the specified and default include paths, fail if still not found. An ancillary tool such as a code analyzer (which I'm currently working on) has different requirements: it may for a number of reasons not have the benefit of the setup performed by a complex build process, and have to make the best of what it is given. In other words, it may find a header file not present in the include paths it knows, and have to take its best shot at finding the file itself. I'm currently thinking of using the following algorithm: Start in the directory of the including file. Is the header file found in the current directory or any subdirectory thereof? If so, done. If we are at the root directory, the file doesn't seem to be present on this machine, so skip it. Otherwise move to the parent of the current directory and go to step 2. Is this the best algorithm to use? In particular, does anyone know of any case where a different algorithm would work better?

  • Compiling GCC or Clang for thumb drive on OSX

    - by user105524
    I have a mac book that I don't have admin rights to which I would like to be able to use either GCC or clang. Since I lack admin right I can't install binutils or a compiler to /usr directory. My plan is to install both of these (using an old macbook that I do have admin rights for) to a flash drive and then run the compiler off of there. How would one go building gcc or clang so that it could run just off of a thumb drive? I've tried both but haven't had any success. I've tried doing it defining as many of the directories as possible through configure, but haven't been able to successfully build. My current configure script for gcc-4.8.1 is (where USB20D is the thumb drive): ../gcc-4.8.1/configure --prefix=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr \ --with-local-prefix=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/local \ --with-native-system-header-dir=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/include \ --with-as=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/as \ --enable-languages=c,c++,fortran\ --with-ld=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ld \ --with-build-time-tools=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin \ AR=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ar \ AS=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/as \ RANLIB=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ranlib \ LD=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ld \ NM=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/nm \ LIPO=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/lipo \ AR_FOR_TARGET=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ar \ AS_FOR_TARGET=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/as \ RANLIB_FOR_TARGET=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ranlib \ LD_FOR_TARGET=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/ld \ NM_FOR_TARGET=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/nm \ LIPO_FOR_TARGET=/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/bin/lipo CFLAGS=" -nodefaultlibs -nostdlib -B/Volumes/USB20FD/bin -isystem/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/include -static-libgcc -v -L/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/lib " \ LDFLAGS=" -Z -lc -nodefaultlibs -nostdlib -L/Volumes/USB20FD/usr/lib -lgcc -syslibroot /Volumes/USB20FD/usr/lib/crt1.10.6.o " Any obvious ideas of which of these options need to be turned on to install the appropriate files on the thumb drive during installation? What other magic occurs during xcode installation which isn't occurring here? Thanks for any suggestions
