  • How do I remove Ubuntu from a dual-boot Windows 7 laptop?

    Im new to Ubuntu and liked it a lot! however after testing it on my old crappy laptop i now want to remove it. Ive looked at tutorials on how to uninstall and it says to start by deleting the linux partition of the hard drive.however after opening Computer management, I cannot locate my linux partition. same as when I go to System Configuration, and click on the "boot" tab, my computer does not list any operating system other than Windows 7. Any Way around this or perhaps a different way to uninstall?

  • Should I switch my graphics mode in the BIOS to avoid using Bumblebee?

    I have just purchased a Acer 3830TG, the timeline X series. To my surprise I found out that there is no first-party support for nvidia optimus for linux. Bumblebee works great, but the battery life from the graphics card always running is not so great. I don't use linux for games so i don't really need the graphics card on, I have Windows for that. In my bios, I have the ability to change my graphics mode from switchable to integrated. If I do this, reinstall ubuntu, what will happen? Will my nvidia card just turn off? Will everything work properly, as if i'm not running an optimus laptop? Is this recommended as opposed to dealing with bumblebee? What is the best thing I could do?

    I'm trying to shrink a Windows 7 XP Mode VHD file with VhdResizer with little success. When I select my VHD file, it says "VhdExpand only supports fixed and dynamic VHD files". My XP Mode VHDs are dynamic files. Does anyone have any idea why it is failing? Failing that, does anyone have a process that I can use to shrink my XP mode VHD files on Windows 7 (64 bit)?

  • Does running IIS7 in classic mode affect MVC output caching?

    I have a need to run an application in classic mode for backwards compatibility with a specific application, and am trying to understand what kind of impact that will have on the performance of an MVC application that is running on the site. If we put a few static file maps (for .js, .css, .png, etc) above the ASP.NET wildcard map to reduce the amount of processing by the ASP.NET handler, will we be approaching the integrated mode in terms of performance? The thing i'm primarily concerned with is any effect this might have on output caching. I understand that integrated mode might (?) allow for the output cache to handle non ASP.NET content, but that isn't really a concern. We're more interested in ensuring that the MVC application has full use of the output cache. Empirically i've found that the two configurations operate on par when things go well, but if the page references resources that are not available, the integrated mode tends to fail much more quickly than the classic mode (e.g. 500 ms vs 10 seconds), reducing 'hang time' on the page load.   • Laptop suspend appears broken, what must I roll back?

    Question: What package contains the subprogram responsible for the KMenu option "sleep"? Background: I've been running KUbuntu 10.04.1 and I am completely updated. Recently (within the past month), the "sleep" menu item has stopped working. It just sits there waiting like I clicked nothing. I've check all of the logs in /var/log and nothing is added when I click sleep. I'm guessing that something I updated has bollux'ed things up, but I don't know which package contains the component that I need to roll back. In the meantime, I've installed uswsusp, but s2ram & s2both don't ask my password when the laptop resumes -- which really bothers me. So now that I've got a little time to track this down, I had to post -- any ideas??

    I'm writing a tool called XP-More, which should help manage Windows 7 Virtual Machines. The first thing the tool has to do when launched is find the VM folder. However, turns out that folder is not listed as a Windows Special Folder. I use a workaround, but it's unreliable. Ideally, Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.VMFolder) or so would have done the job, but VMFolder is a fiction of my imagination. Is there any real way to get that folder?

  • ubuntu 12.04: Why my laptop is consuming more power than 11.10?

    I had 11.10 X86 on my Asus laptop (sandybridge, Nvidia 520M). I had 8 hours' battery life with Bumblebee and Jupiter. Average battery discharge rate was around 10w. Later I changed, not upgraded, to 12.04.1 AMD64. I installed Jupiter. But there is no "restricted drivers" available so I guess Bumblebee will not work. So I removed nvidia drivers. Now I only get 4 hours' battery life. Average battery discharge rate is around 19w. The removal of nvidia driver did not make any difference. What's the cause? Nvidia video card not disabled or 64b version of Ubuntu?

    I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop because the Unity desktop was freezing. Reinstalling 12.04 seems to have fixed the freezing problem, but now the audio does not work. When I go to SettingsAudio and under the Output tab it only has the option for Digital Output. There is no option for Analog Output. The sound card show up under lspci as: "00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)" What would be the command to reinstall the audio subsystem?     Hi everybody, How do you handle replacing/adding/removing memcached nodes in your production applications? I will have a number of applications that are cloned and customized due to each customers need running on one and same webserver, so i'll guess that there will be a day when some of the nodes will be changed. Here's how memcached is populated by normal: $m = new Memcached(); $servers = array( array('mem1.domain.com', 11211, 33), array('mem2.domain.com', 11211, 67) ); $m->addServers($servers); My initial idea, is to make the $servers array to be populated from the database, also cached, but file-based, done once a day or something, with the option to force an update on next run of the function that holds the $addservers call. However, I am guessing that this might add some additional overhead since disks are quite slow storage... What do you think?

  • Youtube controls (sound, etc) not functional in full-screen mode: is that normal?

    When playing youtube videos full-screen, I can't mouse-interact with the player controls, except for the slider (only single-clicking on the video works as play/pause, but not double-click, interestingly, so the only way to leave full-screen mode is via Escape). Is this behavior known? What can I do about it? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, using Google's Chrome browser. P.S. If that matters, some other flash players I've tried also display the same problem, so this may be an issue with Google-supplied Flash plugin. Thanks in advance.

    I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and it works great, except after the initial reboot my touchpad cursor shakes violently when I hold my finger completely still on the pad.It works fine with a regular mouse plugged in. I couldn't find much scouting around the internet except that it might be that my touchpad doesn't have any dead zones? I am very new to Ubuntu and am fairly computer savvy, but I don't know a lot about using the terminal or anything like that, so if you could dumb down a fix for this as much as possible for me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Just successfully installed and ran Windows 8's Windows to Go on a USB external hard drive. However, after shutting down and removing the USB hard disk, whey I to start my laptop (with only Windows 7 installed), but it doesn't boot and trying to repair it doesn't work. It seems that Windows 8 had corrupted the partition table on the laptop's hard drive, causing Windows 7 to fail to boot. How do I fix that and avoid future problems of the same type?

It just seems so inefficient to use CGI mode for PHP when if we could set up permissions properly, we could host PHP through mod_php perhaps?     I recently installed a new copy of Ubuntu 9.10 (Kernel 2.6.31-14) on to my Hp Pavilion dv6t, so I can setup a Linux development environment. The install went flawlessly and I proceeded with Ubuntu's udate manager's long list of updates (292 in all). I also setup a swap file and activated a Nvidia 185 driver for the Nvidia 260m GPU on the machine. After all this was done I restarted the computer and booted into Ubuntu this time with a newer 2.6.31-19 Kernel which was installed from the update manager. At this point I can scrap the install if I broke something, but my intuition says this is an issue with the kernel recognizing the correct hardware configuration for my system, or perhaps this is an issue with the APIC drivers managing Nehalem's new power management capabilities?
