Is there a way to force Mac OSX to take screengrabs with the sRGB color space instead of Color LCD? Currently I have to switch to sRGB in Displays, take a snap and then switch back.
I have placed too many icons in my dock.
there is by default a separator in dock between applications & trash.
I want to add more separators in my dock - for grouping purpose.
say for example
finder, preview, itunes, system pref.,activity monitor FOR Mac osx group
Mozilla, safari - for Browsing group
Odesk, skype, ipmessanger, adium, team viewer for communication
Means, I just want to add separator to identify them very quickly.
Is it possible ? if yes - how ?
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

My Mac freezes except the mouse and keyboard. What is happening and how can I prevent this from happening in the future?
I'm still using 2.8.0.722 on my Mac while a friend has upgraded to 2.8.0.851
The newer version on her computer has pop-up bubbles for every chat message when the chat window is minimized. Neither of us are able to find where to disable this feature. The difficulty arises when we minimize a chat window, but the bubbles continue to show everything the other person is typing, even when one of our kids is with us for a moment looking at something else on the screen.
We have checked all throughout the Preferences settings, most notably the privacy and chat areas, to no avail. Ultimately we would like to disable these chat pop-up bubbles so that when a chat window is minimized, that conversation and all incoming messages will remain private until we restore that chat box to be viewable on the screen again.
Thanks!
Greg
I've got a 24" 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's about 18 months old, though I can't specifically remember when I bought it. It has a Displayport Mini-DVI socket on the back, and currently I have that linked to a DVI adaptor driving a Philips 20" widescreen monitor in portrait mode (awesome for browsing).
I have another, identical Philips monitor and wondered if there was a way of connecting that to the iMac too. Is there such a thing as a DisplayPort Mini-DVI to dual-DVIs adaptor?
Can this iMac's graphics card even drive such a set-up? The graphics chipset in the iMac is reported as ATI Radeon HS2600, 256 MB.
The main iMac display is 1920x1200 and the Philips display is 1050x1680 (@60Hz, rotated 90 degrees). The third screen would be another 1050x1680 and ideally I'd have it portrait again, too.
EDIT: Please let this question stand - it's not a dupe. The current Mac laptops use 'Mini Displayport' connectors, which are not the same as DisplayPort Mini-DVI connectors.
Is there a way to adjust the scaling of items on the screen in Mac OS X so they are 1 to 1 with the real world? I.E. When I'm working with a line in illustrator that is 5 inches long, and the zoom is 100%, I'd like the actual size of the line on screen to be 5 inches.
I've dug into the System Preferences but can't seem to find anything related to this.
I'm using Snow Leopard on a 24" iMac

I'm running 10.6.2 and have been handed a couple of old files that need to be extracted. Old backups or finances or bills I believe. They are RAR files, and password protected. Is there a way to extract the hash from these files so I can feed it into John The Ripper or Cain and Abel?
Edit
I have downloaded cRARk, but unfortunately nothing I have (SimplyRAR, RAR Expander, The Unarchiver) will extract it without a password. Can someone verify that I'm crazy and there is no password on the Mac version?
I am looking for a GTD (getting things done) tool, which there is a OS X and an iPhone app available. I don't want any web based stuff, but native applications. The Mac application needs some functionality for synchronization with the iPhone app.
Are there any GTD apps, which fit my requirements?
I cannot login to the server app and i know for sure all the login info is right. every time i enter my password the name window shakes to tell me it's invalid. I never post unless I'm out of ideas and I need it to be up so I can host my splash page tonight. i've spoken with "certified apple" specialists at some local mac stores and they are stumped too. Something is going on with the apache server, that's all i know for sure. I'll be monitoring this closely so any requests for info, etc. can be filled instantly. Thanks in advance.
here's a few things i've noticed:
I can ssh successfully into the server address as both root and admin.
I've been fussing with the workgroup manager and could use guidance if that's where the problem lies.
console shows this message repeatedly (org.apache.httpd[1890]) Exited with code: 1).
Much appreciated,
harry
We use Radmind to manage our Mac OS X loadsets and, as such, often run into difficulty when new OS releases come out due to, among other things, updated kernel extensions. The workflow in the past (OS revisions <= 10.4) was to delete the kernel extension cache, update the extensions, and then reboot. That worked just fine, as the system would re-create missing caches on boot. In Leopard, you need to delete the caches after replacing the kernel extensions with their new versions, as the system will automatically start creating them when you replace them; the only way to ensure that you don't have invalid extensions cached is to delete the cache before rebooting.
I'm looking for a way to prevent the kernel extensions cache from being re-created until the next reboot. If you modify the contents of /System/Library/Extensions/, kextcache will start up automatically. I've looked through /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ and other places, but I can't find whatever it is that's starting kextcache. Any ideas?
On Linux you can create any layout you wish by editing the appropriate ASCII configuration files. On Windows the keyboard layout definitions are binary. Is there any tool that can create these binary keyboard layout configuration files?
I grew up on the Macintosh international keyboard layout, which used the option key extensively, and now I would like to use the same layout on Windows.
On Linux this Mac international keyboard layout exists for both the console as well as for X.Org. On Windows, the most similar layout is US International, which is not the same.
I have a local share with my VMware development server and I'm finding that when I create new files via Mac OS X, they are created under root instead of jacob.
Which is weird because when I do the connect to server thing I'm explicit about the user being jacob i.e.

Suggestions?
When I go to localhost/~admin/ or 127.0.0.1/~admin/ my browser says:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~admin/ on this server."
How do I change this?!??!?! It's driving me nuts!
when I go to localhost or 127.0.0.1/ my browser says: "It Works!".
I'm running mac osx 10.8.
I created aliases in my .bash_profile file so that I can start, restart and stop Apache quickly:
alias startApache="sudo apachectl start"
alias stopApache="sudo apachectl stop"
alias restartApache="sudo apachectl restart"
In my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file I turned on php5:
LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so
I also made sure to change the permissions for my admin.conf file with this command in terminal:
sudo chmod 644 username.conf
This is my /etc/apache2/users/admin.conf:
<Directory "/Users/admin/Sites/">
Options Indexes MultiViews
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
I have a Powerbook G4 17" and I recently updated to the Mac OS 10.5.8 and got a monitor. I put it to sleep by closing the lid and sometimes it resumes normally and sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't matter if it's on sleep for a day or 10 minutes, it just happens randomly. It wakes up, but the screen doesn't flash blue for a few seconds like it normally would, indicating that it found the second monitor. It just wakes up, and a picture appears on both screens and the mouse moves, but nothing responds. The only way I can make it work again is by holding down the power button until it shuts down and then turning it on again. this frustrating because then I have to reopen all my programs and Safari tabs. I tried resetting the PMU by unplugging everything and taking out the batter, then holding the power button for five seconds, but it has the same problem no matter what I do.
Hi,
after googling for some Mac OSX terminal shortcuts, I wanted to find how can I go back characters on a line on the terminal or words or similar. I found ALT+B but it does not work.
Do you know some other shortctus, or how can I customize them or links to cheat sheets?
Thanks
I'm trying to connect to a server at work which is run on a Mac but I have a PC (windows 7) at home. I have path to connect in the format of afp://server.com/files. Is there a client that I need to install on my PC that I can use to login?
Thanks,

I'm trying to configure the Yii framework but am having problems with the terminal commands, and am also having difficulty setting up the webapp demo. I am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard and have installed XAMPP and placed the 'yii' folder in the xamppfiles \ htdocs folder.
I have verified the http://localhost/yii/requirements/index.php which is working fine. I have tried the following but nothing seems to work so if anyone can point out what I'm doing wrong it would be very much appreciated. In fact any directory I search for is not recognized (see below) so I'm thinking I need to do something else for this to work but I have searched and searched but found no answer.
~ Jake$ /applications/xampp/xamppfiles/yii
-bash: /applications/xampp/xamppfiles/yii: No such file or directory
~ Jake$ /documents
-bash: /documents: No such file or directory
I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text.
I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*.
I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
So I'm trying to get the Java 7 as the default version on my machine, running Mac OS X 10.9.3. When I run:
java -version
I get:
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode)
When I run:
javac -version
I get:
javac 1.6.0_65
When I go into System Preferences -- Java -- Update, I see:
Your system has the recommended vesion of Java.
Java 8 Update 05.
I guess I have a few questions:
1) Why does my Java Control Panel claim I have Java 8, but my work in the terminal (when checking my Java version) says otherwise?
2) I just downloaded the .dmg file for Java SE 7 from Oracle's site and installed, though it's nowhere to be seen...
Thanks for the help, Mariogs
Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock?
There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard..
I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen..
Edit: With the help of Steve Folly's answer, the following code:
[[NSApplication sharedApplication]
setPresentationOptions: NSApplicationPresentationAutoHideMenuBar
| NSApplicationPresentationAutoHideDock];
..will auto-hide the menubar (and the dock, as mandated by the API), but only for the current application:
When controlling or disabling features of Mac OS X system using SetSystemUIMode the requested behaviors are only in effect while the process which called SetSystemUIMode is frontmost
..close, but not quite there
I'm a fairly recent mac user. Been using windows for decades and happily switched. But i upgraded from 10.6 to 10.6.1 last night and the upgrade looks like it failed.
I restarted the machine when it asked to then went to bed. In the morning the computer was still trying to shut itself off. So i forced the shutdown, restarted, but now i'm stuck with the loading spinner.
What can i do?
UPDATE:
Verbose didn't show anything interesting.
i also did the hardware test. Nothing comes up wrong.
Disk utility did not find any error on the HD.
But, it did show a fatal error when checking permissions.
The "Show In Finder" action isn't working on Mac OS X Mountain Lion. The problem has just started to occur all the time, before it was a bit sporadic, but now it happens all the time.
Things that don't work:
In the chrome Downloads page clicking any of the "Show in Finder" links.
Right clicking a file in XCode and choosing "Show in Finder"
Things that work:
open . in terminal
command-n after command tabbing to Finder.
Things I've tried to fix the issue:
Opt - Right Click finder in the dock and relauching
Restarting my computer
Anybody ever experienced this issue?
In Linux I can well to add alias to bashrc and it will become a permanent alias. In Mac OS I tried to do the same thing:
vim ~/.bashrc
export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin" # Add RVM to PATH f or scripting
alias prj="cd ~/Documents/projects"
### Added by the Heroku Toolbelt
export PATH="/usr/local/heroku/bin:$PATH"
That being said, I got this:
$ alias
alias rvm-restart='rvm_reload_flag=1 source '\''/Users/alex/.rvm/scripts/rvm'\'''
So where is my prj alias? I rebooted the laptop but nothing has changed.
