• Is this a valid backup strategy for MongoDB?

  I've got a single dedicated server with a MongoDB database of around 10GB. I need to do daily backups, but I can't have downtime with the database. Is it possible to use a replica set on a single disk (with 2 instances of mongod running on different ports), and simply take the secondary one offline and backup the data files to an offsite storage such as S3 (journaling is turned on)? Or would using master/slave be better than a replica set? Is this viable, and if so, what potential problems could I have? If not, how do I conceptualize this to work?

• boot failure trying to install linux distro from a cd

  Hoping someone can help me get this installation from a cd going. I'm using an older pc: hp pavillion 2.66Ghz, 512RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003. I reclaimed some an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working as its recognized in the bios (auto-detected) I downloaded a mini.iso of ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM] and I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CDROM. This old pc also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave, so the Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned cd with the linux distro. So, with these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Where do I go from here? Thanks.

• Resolving host names to their domain name in an internal BIND domain

  I'm setting up a domain on my home network for learning purposes, using BIND on CentOS to act as the name server. I've got the name server up and running as type master for my internal domain (plumbnicoll.family), and can do forward and reverse lookups from other computers in my LAN. For example, host office2.plumbnicoll.family correctly returns office2.plumbnicoll.family has address 192.168.1.3. What I'd like is to be able to resolve just office2 to its address, without needing to put .plumbnicoll.family at the end. Is this possible, or even desirable to do? I'm running a mixed environment at home with both Linux and Windows computers.

• How to stop nginx on Mac OS X

  I've installed nginx server on my Mac from MacPorts: sudo port install nginx. Then I followed the recommendation from the port installation console and created the launchd startup item for nginx, then started the server. It works fine (after I renamed nginx.conf.example to nginx.conf and renamed mime.types.example to mime.types), but I couldn't stop it... I tried sudo nginx -s stop - this doesn't stop the server, I can still see "Welcome to nginx!" page in my browser on http://localhost/, also I still see master and worker processes of nginx with ps -e | grep nginx. What is the best way to start/stop nginx on Mac? BTW, I've added "daemon off;" into nginx.conf - as recommended by various resources. Thank you.

• Keepalived with apache unable to bind interface on Backup server

  I have two debian 6 servers running keepalived 1.1.20 with one server acting as a Master and the other as a Backup. Both servers host apache 2.4 that have a global Listener on all interfaces on port 80 (Listen *:80) how ever I have some sites that require a listener for port 443 (SSL) and that is configured for each VirtualHost in the Apache config since I do not want every VirtualHost to listen on port 443. The problem is when I try to start Apache on the Backup machine that does not hold the virtual interface the VirtualHost is supposed to be listening on, I get AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 1.1.1.1:443. I know this is expected behavior of Apache. The real question is are there any known workarounds or solutions to this scenario?

• What does Libre Office do to an existing Excel sheet to bloat its size?

  I try to avoid using Libre Office on existing Excel created workbooks because of the potential for unpleasant results. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..) Libre Office on Mac OS 10.6 Types of data stored in this workbook: Text Integers 1 column with a simple formula spanning the entire worksheet representing that particular row (=CONCATENATE(A2285,B2285,D2285), =CONCATENATE(A2286,B2286,D2286), etc.) Total of 3,500 plus rows Here is a photo with details described within, but I'll go ahead and explain the photo as well: This screenshot is from Dropbox history of the .xlsx workbook.   After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

• PHP-FPM runs PHP scripts as root

  I have a web server setup using nginx and PHP-FPM listening on a Unix socket. In my php-fpm.conf, I have specified user = www group = www When I run ps aux, I can see that the php-fpm worker processes run as www; the php-fpm master process runs as root. However, I noticed that PHP scripts are executed as root; at least that's the output of echo get_current_user(); What can I do to run scripts as the www user? How can this even happen if the worker processes run as www?

  Hi, If I have a VMWare ESXi server with 4 Windows XP guests running on it, I understand that I need a separate license for each guest. Is there a way to simplify license compliance on these VMs? For example, I want to create a master VM image and boot it 4 times. By default those 4 VMs will have the same Windows activation key installed. Is there a simple solution for this? Or is it ok to do what I've described above provided I have 4 unique license keys on hand in case of audit? thanks!

  I have a few dozen excel files which are all of the same format (i.e. 4 worksheets per Excel file). I need to combine all the files into 1 master file which must have just 2 of the 4 worksheets. The corresponding worksheets from each Excel file are named exactly the same as are the column headers. While each file is structured the same, the information within sheet 1 and 2 (for example) is different. So it can’t be combined into one file with everything in one sheet! I've never used VBA before and I'm wondering where I might start this task!

• IPV6 causing issue with DNS

  I have set up an 'internal' DNS at my work, basically we have ourdomain.com that is for internet, email etc and I have created on one of our linux network servers (debian) a DNS using bind9 with the domain ourdomain.inc. So based on my files below and the symptoms I'm describing; what effect could IPV6 be having on my setup? What can I do to fix this? I assume it is not actually the IPV6 causing the issue, but rather something in my setup. More the most part this seems to work, I can ping svn.ourdomain.inc and it resolves to the correct IP, I can also ping google.com and it also resolves no problem. So all seem good. However, periodically (couple of times a day at least), I loose the ability to ping the svn.domain.inc (and all others defined under the internal DNS). What seem to fix the issue temporarily is to disable IPV6 on the network adapter of the client machine and then re-enable it. Then it works for a bit but will always fail again. • No longer able to run photo software on XP

  I have Olympus Master 2 and Photoimpression 6 on my system which is running with XP Pro. Both programmes ran fine till recently and neither now works. I have run Avira and AVG anti virus (only one loaded at a time), Superantispyware, Spybot and Malwarebytes and removed the usual dross but no help. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled both several times but again no help. Both programmes load but the Olympus one immediately passes to the usual 'its met a problem and needs to close'...Photoimpression loads fully but as soon as I go to the edit screen it gives the same message. I have tried another profile to no avail. Any idea why this is and what the solution is??

  Hello! I realy need help with one strange problem. I have a wifi network in my appartment with wireless N home router Trendnet tew-652BRP. Everething work fine for three of my laptops, but I have one PC with D-Link DWA-140 adapter. It looses connection 2-3 times in 5 minutes. There is following messages in my system log when it does so: The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{9537A5C1-3B43-4C56-B94C-CE69A257C3AD} because a master browser was stopped. The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control. The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)] Comment: None The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service entered the stopped state. in order of appearence. How can I stop it? I have the latest driver installed.

• rsyslog forward all except ldap

  I have Centos 6 servers running openLDAP. In the rsyslog.conf, I forward the logs to my central server with this line: *.* @10.10.10.10:514 openldap seems incredibly chatty. I have 3 servers in a multi-master cluster. Those 3 servers generate twice as many logs as my other 80 servers combined. I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to tell openLDAP to use a sensible log level. (we never specifically set the log level) Since these are my main authentication sources, I'm a bit hesitant to "play around" with them. Is there a way to tell rsyslog to forward everything EXCEPT LOCAL4?

• Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

• Postfix configuration w.r.t. port 25

  After a considerable amount of research, I have configured my postfix server to use dovecot to accept SMTPS connections over port 465 and everything works swimmingly. Unfortunately, I forgot that, unless I listen to port 25, I'm not going to receive any e-mail from the net. I'm hoping somebody knows off the top of their head how to open up port 25 on Postfix for anonymous users, but disallow relaying and any other bad things on that port. And to leave the port 465 the way it is. My idea is to have a branch for each server. /etc is not the only one directory to be tracked (I won't git init in '/etc' ) As far as I could see, it is possible to init a git for a distant directory. • How can I set up an FTP user with a home directory inside another user's home folder?

  Hi I have an Ubuntu (Hardy) server which I am using to host multiple websites. All of the sites are stored in subfolders of a public_html folder for my main login to the server and accessed via a single SSH account. I now have a website user who wants FTP (or similar) access to enable them to upload various files etc to the directory where their website is situated, however I still need the SSH account to have access to this directory as I may need to make changes using my master account. Basically I want to create an FTP account (I have VSFTPD installed) for a user with the home directory inside my own user account but they should only be able to read/write to this folder or its subfolders but not go further up the directory tree. How can I achieve this? Thanks

  I'm having an issue...My system specs is: Intel i7 960 6GM Corair XMS RAM ATI HD5970 graphics card Intel dx58so motherboard Cooler Master HAF 922 case 1.5TB Seagate hard drive Windows Vista x86 (32-bit). Here is my issue: when I go to AMD/ATI website to update my graphics card - it doesn't. when I type DxDiag and then click on display it tell me my version is 8.17.0 and its on 10.10.0 for the latest version. How can I get 8.17.0 too 10.10.0? I figure it would have done that after I updated the driver for my graphics card. Thanks.

  I'm trying to use uWSGI with a virtual env in order to use the Trac bug tracker on it. I've installed system-wide uwsgi via pip. Next, I've installed trac in a virtualenv $ virtualenv venv $ . venv/bin/activate $ pip install trac I've then written a simple uWSGI configuration script: [uwsgi] master = true processes = 1 socket = localhost:3032 home = /srv/http/trac/venv/ no-site = true gid = www-data uid = www-data env = TRAC_ENV=/srv/http/trac/projects/my_project module = trac.web.main:dispatch_request But when I try to launch it, it fails: $ uwsgi --http :8000 --ini /etc/uwsgi/vassals-available/my_project.ini --gid www-data --uid www-data ... Set PythonHome to /srv/http/trac/venv/ ... *** Operational MODE: single process *** ImportError: No module named trac.web.main unable to load app 0 (mountpoint='') (callable not found or import error) I think uWSGI isn't using the virtual env. When inside the virtual env, I can import trac.web.main without having an ImportError. How can I do that ? Thanks

  I have two worksheets in two different Excel files. They both contain a list of names and addresses. One is a master list that includes other fields, and the other is a list that only includes name and address and an id column that was pared down by another office. I want to use the 2nd list to filter the first. I know how I could do this very easily with a database inner join, but I'm less clear on how to do this efficiently in Excel. How can join two worksheets in Excel? Bonus points for showing how to do outer joins as well, and I would greatly prefer konwing how to do this without needing a macro.

• How to use postfix header_checks with zarafa outgoing mail

  I'm using zarafa as MDA with postfix. For privacy reasons I want to filter client internal IP-addresses and stuff like this. To do so I've added the following to master.cf: submission inet n - - - - smtpd [...] -o cleanup_service_name=subcleanup [...] and further down the file: subcleanup unix n - - - 0 cleanup -o header_checks=pcre:/etc/postfix/smtp_header_checks which works perfectly for clients delivering their mail through the submission port. But my zarafa is of course not using the submission port to send mail, hence it doesn't hit the subcleanup routine and outgoing mails contain a very nice X-Mailer: Zarafa-exact_version header which is rather unsatisfying. Is there any way to make zarafa use the subcleanup routine? Any help is much appreciated.
