• SQLAuthority News – Resolution for New Year 2011

  Today is the first day of the year so I want to write something very light. Last Year: 2010 Last Year was a blast; really traveled a lot. My family and I went on vacation. There I enjoyed being father, rolling on the floor and playing with my daughter. Here is the list of the countries I visited throughout 2010: Singapore (twice) Malaysia (twice) Sri Lanka (thrice) Nepal (once) United States of America (twice) United Arab Emirates (UAE) (once) My daughter who just completed 1 year on September 1, 2010 has so far visited three countries: Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, where I have done lots of community activities. The list containing all my activities can be found at Pinal Dave’s Community Events. I have written nearly 380 blog posts last year. It would be difficult for me to pick a few. However, I keep a running list of all of my articles over here: All Articles on SQLAuthority.com. I have so far received more than 10,000 email questions during the year and consequently I have done my best to answer most of them. I strongly believe if one would Search SQLAuthority.com blog, they would have found the answer quickly. The best part of 2010 for me was working on SQL Server Health Check and SQL Server Performance Tuning. This Year: 2011 This year, I came up with two simple goals: 1. Personal Goal: Reduce Weight 2. • SQL SERVER – How to Change Compatibility of Database to SQL Server 2014

  Yesterday I wrote about how we can install SQL Server 2014. Right after the blog post was live, I received a question from the developer that he has installed SQL Server 2014 and attached a database file from previous version of SQL Server. Right after attaching database, he was not able to work with the latest features of Cardinality Estimation. As soon as he sent me email I realize what has happened exactly. When he attached database, the database compatibility was set to still of the earlier version of SQL Server. To use most of the latest features of SQL Server 2014, one has to change the compatibility level of the database to the latest version (i.e. 120). Here are two different ways how we can change the compatibility of database to SQL Server 2014′s version. 1) Using Management Studio For this method first to go database and right click over it. Now select properties. On this screen user can change the compatibility level to 120. 2) Using T-SQL Script. You can execute following script and change the compatibility settings to 120. • SQL SERVER – 2012 – List All The Column With Specific Data Types in Database

  5 years ago I wrote script SQL SERVER – 2005 – List All The Column With Specific Data Types, when I read it again, it is very much relevant and I liked it. This is one of the script which every developer would like to keep it handy. I have upgraded the script bit more. I have included few additional information which I believe I should have added from the beginning. It is difficult to visualize the final script when we are writing it first time. I use every script which I write on this blog, the matter of the fact, I write only those scripts here which I was using at that time. It is quite possible that as time passes by my needs are changing and I change my script. Here is the updated script of this subject. If there are any user data types, it will list the same as well. • SQL SERVER – 2014 Announced and SQL Server 2014 Datasheet

  Earlier this week Microsoft has announced SQL Server 2014. The release date of Trial of SQL Server to be believed later this year. Here are few of the improvements which I was looking forward are there in this release. Please note this is not the exhaustive list of the features of SQL Server 2014. This is the a quick note on the features which I was looking forward and now will be available in this release. Always On supports now 8 secondaries instead of 4 Online Indexing at partition level – this is a good thing as now index rebuilding can be done at a partition level Statistics at the partition level – this will be a huge improvement in performance In-Memory OLTP works by providing in-application memory storage for the most often used tables in SQL Server. (Read More Here) Columnstore Index can be updated – I just can’t wait for this feature (Columnstore Index) Resource Governor can control IO along with CPU and Memory Increase performance by extending SQL Server in-memory buffer pool to SSDs Backup to Azure Storage You can additionally download SQL Server 2014 Datasheet from here. • My Package Version Number Appears Greater Yet apt-get Doesn't Select It

  Backstory: It was determined that when using lxc container VMs the Nagios nrpe shutdown script when run on the host of the containers would kill the nrpe processes inside the containers. This was remediated by changing the script to use pidfiles instead of searching the process table for the nrpe process. Regrettably start-stop-daemon is a C program that resulted from translating a Perl script and it shows. There are far too many global varibles in start-stop-daemon.c and although there are some nice blocks of comments there are far to few comments that explain the intent behind variable names such as "schedule" (the string "schedule" appears in many contexts.) The manual page for start-stop-daemon strongly suggests that unless you use the "--retry" option the start-stop-daemon program may return before the process it sent a signal to actually calls exit() and terminates, however it doesn't actually state this in plain English. The obtuseness of start-stop-daemon is most likely the reason that the "fixed" version of the script includes a dubious comment indicating that sometimes the pid file has not been removed. I can easily see why someone would not understand that he left the --retry option missing. This bug also causes failures when the script is given the "restart" option; the nrpe daemon will shutdown but not start up again. Did I mention that since applying the update our nrpe servers started crashing over and over? Repairing this is why I am doing this work. I have been working on remediating the fix. You can see my current work in this PPA. Actual Question: The upstream version number of nagios-nrpe-server in lucid-updates is 2.12-4ubuntu1.10.04.1 My PPA uses this version number 2.12-4ubuntu1.10.04.1.1~ppa1~lucid1 I check the rules here and use this test program and I am lead to believe that the version number I use in my PPA is greater than the one in lucid-updates yet when I ran: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nutznboltz/nrpe-unbreak-lp-600941 sudo apt-get update sudo aptitiude dist-upgrade The replacement package was not installed. I was able to install it using sudo aptitude install nagios-nrpe-server=2.12-4ubuntu1.10.04.1.1~ppa1~lucid1 Can anyone explain this behavior? Why didn't my version number appear greater to "aptitude dist-upgrade"? Thanks $ cat /etc/apt/preferences Package: * Pin: release a=lucid-backports Pin-Priority: 400 Package: * Pin: release a=lucid-security Pin-Priority: 990 Package: * Pin: release a=lucid-updates Pin-Priority: 900 Package: * Pin: release a=lucid-proposed Pin-Priority: 400 $ ls /etc/apt/preferences.d/ $ Should not make any difference as a PPA cannot be in any of those pockets. I went ahead and bumped the version number in the PPA to 2.12-4ubuntu1.10.04.2~ppa1~lucid1. I'll see if that makes a difference. I do notice that lintian complains: W: nagios-nrpe-server: debian-revision-not-well-formed 2.12-4ubuntu1.10.04.2~ppa1~lucid1

  SharePoint and SQL Server both goes together – hands to hand. SharePoint installation is very interesting. At various organizations, the installation is very different and have various needs. SQL Server installation with SharePoint is equally important and I have often seen that it is being neglected. Microsoft has published the Deployment Guide for SharePoint Foundation. It talks about various database aspects as well. For optimal sharepoint installation the required version of SQL Server, including service packs and cumulative updates must be installed on the database server. The installation must include any additional features, such as SQL Analysis Services, and the appropriate SharePoint Foundation logins have to be added and configured. The database server must be hardened and, if it is required, databases must be created by the DBA. • Google Analytics checkout page tracking problem

  I am running a multilingual website, each lang on a different domain name. I am trying to lead all purchase requests to the checkout progress, which has its own domain too. In order to keep Google Analytics tracking I've updated the Google Analytics code accordingly. I set the source domain to 'multiple top-level domains'. Everything is going fine so far unless in E-commerce Overview; the "Sources / Medium" is always showing as (direct) - or the name of the source domain. Since I am redirecting using PHP header(location:.. etc.) the Google _link method doesn't seem to be working properly - I want to focus on two questions: Should I create a new profile for the checkout domain in Google Analytics? (I am now using the profile ID of the source domain even though I move to the checkout domain, si that OK?) When I'm trying to pass the cookies of the source domain to the checkout domain, I notice that the Google cookies are copied to the new domain (the cookie path is .checkout-domain/) and they have the same values of the original cookies - But for some reason another set of cookies is created once I access a page with google analytics code in the checkout pages, with different values (same path). Feels like I'm doing something wrong here, so my question is - What am I doing wrong here? Does anyone have an idea how to pass the cookies to the checkout domain?

  This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday hosted by Allen Kinsel. He has selected very interesting subject for T-SQL Tuesday – Disaster and Recovery. This subject took me in past – my past. There were various things, I had done or proposed when I started very first month as a DBA trainee. I was tagged along with very senior DBA in my organization who always protected me or correct my mistake. He was great guy and totally understand the young mind of over-enthusiastic Trainee DBA. I respect him very much. Here are few things which I had learned in my very first month (not necessarily I have practices them on production). Never compress (zip) native backup using any tools, when disaster happen sometime the extra time to un-compress the database can be too long and not acceptable for business SLA Do not truncate logs After restoring full database backup – only restore latest differential back, no need to restore all the backup Always write WHERE condition when deleting and updating Sr. DBA always advised me – always keep your résumé ready and car ready – you never know when you can not recover disaster! • SQL Query for Determining SharePoint ACL Sizes

  When a SharePoint Access Control List (ACL) size exceeds more than 64kb for a particular URL, the contents under that URL become unsearchable due to limitations in the SharePoint search engine.  The error most often seen is The Parameter is Incorrect which really helps to pinpoint the problem (its difficult to convey extreme sarcasm here, please note that it is intended).  Exceeding this limit is not unheard of – it can happen when users brute force security into working by continually overriding inherited permissions and assigning user-level access to securable objects. Once you have this issue, determining where you need to focus to fix the problem can be difficult.  Fortunately, there is a query that you can run on a content database that can help identify the issue: SELECT [SiteId],      MIN([ScopeUrl]) AS URL,      SUM(DATALENGTH([Acl]))/1024 as AclSizeKB,      COUNT(*) AS AclEntries FROM [Perms] (NOLOCK) GROUP BY siteid ORDER BY AclSizeKB DESC This query results in a list of ACL sizes and entry counts on a site-by-site basis.  You can also remove grouping to see a more granular breakdown: SELECT [ScopeUrl] AS URL,       SUM(DATALENGTH([Acl]))/1024 as AclSizeKB,      COUNT(*) AS AclEntries FROM [Perms] (NOLOCK) GROUP BY ScopeUrl ORDER BY AclSizeKB DESC

• SQL SERVER – Download PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility

  During an early career of mine as a database consultant – when I was dealing with SQL Server 2000, I often needed to collect various data related to SQL Server. My favorite tool to collect the data is PSSDIAG tool. It is a general purpose diagnostic collection utility that Microsoft Product Support Services uses to collect various logs and data files. It collects Performance Monitor logs, SQL Profiler traces, SQL Server blocking script output, Windows Event Logs, and SQLDIAG output. The data collected can be used by SQL Nexus tool which help you troubleshoot SQL Server performance problems. PSSDIAG is a wrapper around other data collection APIs and utilities, the performance impact of running PSSDIAG is generally equal to the impact of the traces that PSSDIAG has been configured to capture. If you are using SQL Server 2000 – you need to seriously consider to upgrading it to SQL Server 2012. Here is a PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility updated in August 2012. • SQL SERVER – Copy Database – SQL in Sixty Seconds #067

  There are multiple reasons why a user may want to make a copy of the database. Sometimes a user wants to copy the database to the same server and sometime wants to copy the database on a different server. The important point is that DBA and Developer may want copies of their database for various purposes. I copy my database for backup purpose. However, when we hear coping database – the very first thought which comes to our mind is – Backup and Restore or Attach and Detach. Both of these processes have their own advantage and disadvantages. The matter of the fact, those methods is much efficient and recommended methods. However, if you just want to copy your database as it is and do not want to go for advanced feature. You can just use the copy feature of the SQL Server. • SQL SERVER – New Look for CodePlexProject – Hosting for Open Source Software

  Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here.
