Direct X-forwarding

I'm struggling to set up X-forwarding between 2 different machines on my local network and my ubuntu desktop. I'm able to connect using ssh x-forwarding one one machine, but the other machine (a Qnap TS-219P II) seems to have a less functional build of SSH on it, and I'd rather use a simpler approach. I've set $DISPLAY, and done 'xauth list $DISPLAY' on the desktop, then 'xauth add ' on the remote machine. From the remote machine, I just get xterm xterm Xt error: Can't open display: 192.168.0.4:0.0 Now, oddly, if I connect via ssh -X, there is a different magic cookie for the tunnelled port (but neither seems to work). I'm wondering if there is a port which needs to be enabled to permit X connections from the LAN? If so, how? The proper solution might be to re-build all the packages which are preventing X-forwarding from working on my QNAP machine, but lets assume for the purposes of this question that I've tried building enough packages on that architecture already and want to run X without the overhead of encryption.

Discussion of a Distributed Data Storage implementation

I want to implement a distributed data storage using a client/server architecture. Each data item will be stored persistently in disk in one of several remote servers. The client uses a library to update and query the data, shielding the client from its actual location. This should allow a client to associate keys (String) to values(byte[]), much as a Map does. The system must ensure that the amount of data stored in each server is approximately the same. The set of servers is known beforehand by other servers and clients. Both the client and the server will be written in Java, using sockets, threads, and files. I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update. How should I design a wizard for generating requirements and documentation

I'm currently working in an industry where extensive documentation is required, but the apps I'm writing are all pretty much cookie cutter at a high level. What I'd like to do is build an app that asks a series of questions regarding business rules and marketing requirements to generate a requirements spec. For example, there might be a question set that asks "Does the user need to enter their age?" and a follow-up question of "What is the minimum age requirement?" If the inputs are "yes" and "18", then this app will generate requirements that look something like this: "The registration form shall include an age selector" "The registration form shall throw an error if the selected age is less than 18" Later on down the line, I'd like to extend this to do additional things like generate test cases and even code, but the idea is the same: generate some output based on rules determined by answering a set of questions. Are there any patterns I could research to better design the architecture of such an application? Is this something that I should be modeling as a finite state machine?

Are flag variables an absolute evil?

I remember doing a couple of projects where I totally neglected using flags and ended up with better architecture/code; however, it is a common practice in other projects I work at, and when code grows and flags are added, IMHO code-spaghetti also grows. Would you say there are any cases where using flags is a good practice or even necessary?, or would you agree that using flags in code are... red flags and should be avoided/refactored; me, I just get by with doing functions/methods that check for states in real time instead. Level and Player objects - which should contain which?

I've been working on a several simple games, and I've always come to a decision point where I have to choose whether to have the Level object as an attribute of the Player class or the Player as an attribute of the Level class. I can see arguments for both: The Level should contain the player because it also contains every other entity. In fact it just makes sense this way: "John is in the room." It makes it a bit more difficult to move the player to a new level, however, because then each level has to pass its player object to an upcoming level. On the other hand, it makes programming sense to me to leave the player as the top-level object that is persistent between levels, and the environment changes because the player decides to change his level and location. It becomes very easy to change levels, because all I have to do is replace the level variable on the player. What's the most common practice here? Or better yet, is there a "right" way to architecture this relationship?

(It was actually a very generous Christmas present) I would primarily be interested in something like Human Computer Interaction or a similar "creative technology" that involves heavy UI/UX Design, prototyping or Information Architecture. Anyways - I still plan on working full-time and was looking into part-time distance programs and was wondering if anyone had some experience with pursuing a similar degree (either from a distance or in-person) and could share their experiences. How much server bandwidth does an average RTS game require per month?

My friend and I are going to write a multiplayer, multiplatform RTS game and are currently analyzing the costs of going with a client-server architecture. The game will have a small map with mostly characters, not buildings (think of DotA or League of Legends). The authoritative game logic will run on the server and message packet sizes will be highly optimized. We'd like to know approximately how much server bandwidth our proposed RTS game would use on a monthly basis, considering these theoretical constants: 100 concurrent users maximum 8 players maximum per game 10 ticks per second Bonus: If you can tell us approximately how much server RAM this kind of game would use that would also help a great deal. Alsa version numbers not consistent

I've recently moved from 10.04 to 12.04 and have problems with crackles on audio when the screen changes (especially obvious in a Skype conversation with video). !!Kernel Information !!------------------ Kernel release: 3.2.0-26-generic-pae Operating System: GNU/Linux Architecture: i686 Processor: i686 SMP Enabled: Yes !!ALSA Version !!------------ Driver version: 1.0.24 Library version: 1.0.25 Utilities version: 1.0.25 Running through the SoundTroubleShooting procedures I got the above details at Step 3. Is the mismatch between the Driver version (1.0.24) and the Library and Utilities versions (1.0.25) the cause of my problem, or should I be looking elsewhere? In answers to the question "Will ALSA 1.0.25 version have time to enter 12.04?" I read that 1.0.25 would be part of the new kernel, but my kernel version appears to be newer than the original release.

Besides the environment is now buzzing with unity 5.4 and also Ubuntu 12.10. So can someone please help me to customize the unity launcher for Ubuntu 12.04 for different workspaces? I mean, which steps they follow, which programming methodology, software architecture design application software, etc. I would like to find a tutorial where they explain from the beginning which steps I have to follow from The Idea I have in my mind to the final version of the application in any language. Or perhaps how is your programming steps or rules that you used to follow. Because everytime I want to create the an application I spend few time on the design and a lot of time coding (I know, that's not good).
