• How can I use my multiple cored dedicated server to run my java application?

  I have a game built in a java environment and I use JVM. I have 4 cores @ 2.4Ghz and my server is only using one of those cores... I've tried and searched and I still have no guides to setup multiple cores to run the game like, say 1 core for running the character saving + loading, and 1 core for the server itself, and 1 core for a helper to help other cores that need more power. I don't even know if this is possible but this is all in java the operating machine is windows server 2003 and I've tried so hard I just don't know what to do. May someone please help me! • Linux - File was deleted and then reappeared when folder was zipped

  Hello, I am using Backtrack 4 Final, which is a Linux distro that is Ubuntu based. I had a directory that contained around 5 files. I deleted one of the files, which sent it to the trash. I then zipped the directory up (now containing 4 files), using this command: zip -r directory.zip directory/ When I then unzipped directory.zip, the file I deleted was in there again. I couldn't believe this, so I zipped up the directory again, and the file reappeared again but this time could not be opened because the operating system said it didn't exist or something. I don't remember the exact error, and I cannot make this happen again. Would anyone happen to know why a file that was deleted from a directory would reappear in that directory after it was zipped up? Thank you.

• Empty or "flush" a file descriptor without read()?

  (Note: This is not a question of how to flush a write(). This is the other end of it, so to speak.) Is it possible to empty a file descriptor that has data to be read in it without having to read() it? You might not be interested in the data, and reading it all would therefore waste space and cycles you might have better uses for. If it is not possible in POSIX, do any operating systems have any non-portable ways to do this? UPDATE: Please note that I'm talking about file descriptors, not streams.

  Dear Developers, Hi i have a quick question about the iphone (iOS) geolocation api's. Currenly i have a map in my application and the operating system will ask the user if it wants to allow the use of geolocations. Now thats all nice but the thing is i want to change my app when geolocations is allowed to a so called "Geo location" mode where new options are available or "standard" mode with less ui elements when permissions are not granted. What can i use to check if permission is granted?. So basicaly is that an api that tells me permission granted yes or no.

  Hi there, I'm studying for my final exams in my CS major on the subject distributed systems and operating systems. I'm in the need for a good definition for the terms task, process and threads. So far I'm confident that a process is the representation of running (or suspended, but initiated) program with its own memory, program counter, registers, stack, etc (process control block). Processes can run threads which share memory, so that communication via shared memory is possible in contrast to processes which have to communicate via IPC. But what's the difference between tasks and process. I often read that they're interchangable and that the term task isn't used anymore. Is that really true?

• Performance characteristics of pthreads vs ucontext

  I'm trying to port a library that uses ucontext over to a platform which supports pthreads but not ucontext. The code is pretty well written so it should be relatively easy to replace all the calls to the ucontext API with a call to pthread routines. However, does this introduce a significant amount of additional overhead? Or is this a satisfactory replacement. I'm not sure how ucontext maps to operating system threads, and the purpose of this facility is to make coroutine spawning fairly cheap and easy. So, question is: Does replacing ucontext calls with pthread calls significantly change the performance characteristics of a library?

• Compiler #defines for g++ and cl

  I am writing a program that is cross platform. There are a few spots where I have to specify an operating system dependent call. #ifdef WINDOWS ..do windows only stuff #endif #ifdef LINUX ..do linux only stuff #endif Are there any preprocesser directives that get defined by the compiler so I don't have to explicitly define them when I use the command line compiler. ie. cl -DWINDOWS program.cpp or g++ -DLINUX program.cpp I realize I could easily write a makefile or have a shell/batch script that will do this automatically. But I would prefer to use the same ones as the compiler (if they exist) by default.

• Tridion Core Service - Transaction roll back isnt working

  We are using the core service in ASP.NET custom page in order to create pages and components and sevenral updates (checkout,save and chekin). we want those operations to work in transaction, we tried to implement it acording to some examples over the net. However we didn't succeded operating the rollback. It seems that the operation are immediately performed without waiting for the comit .   I have WPF Application. My Application consist of 2 exe files: Notifier.exe and MainApp.exe. Notifier is system tray popup application which check the remote server in equal intervals and get the list of current documents of user. When user click on one of the documents in list in Notification popup I open MainApp.exe and show required document in new tab. But When user click on another document in list it open new MainApp.exe process. Question: How Can I connect specific (already opened) process in the operating system and create some object in it?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. • AcceptSecurityContext (Kerberos) returns SEC_E_LOGON_DENIED

  Hi, I am trying to write a simple application that performs Kerberos authentication (no mutual authentication for now). The operating system is Windows server 2003, standard edition. I have setup Active directory and created an SPN using setspn tool. AcquireCredentialsHandle returns SEC_E_OK both on client and on server. InitializeSecurityContext on client side returns SEC_E_OK. AcceptSecurityContext on server side returns SEC_E_LOGON_DENIED. I am sure there's nothing wrong in my code since the same behaviour I see when using the sample application from the following MSDN article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dvdarchive/bb985043.aspx So I guess there is something wrong in my setup. But I can't find out what. Maybe I have missed something in SPN setup? Any help is appreciated. Regards, David.

• Known problems with filemtime() on Windows - files getting touched arbitrarily?

  Is there a known issue leading to file modification times of cache files on Windows XP SP 3 getting arbitrarily updated, but without any actual change? Is there some service on a standard Windows XP - Backup, Sync, Versioning, Virus scanner - known to touch files? They all have a .txt extension. If there isn't, forget it. Then I'm getting something wrong in my cache routines, and I'll debug my way through. Background: I'm building a simple caching wrapper around a slow web site on a Windows server. I am comparing the filemtime() time stamp to some columns in the data base to determine whether a cached file is stale. I'm having problems using this method because the modification time of the cache files seems to get updated in between operations without me doing anything. THis results in stale files being displayed. I'm the only user on the machine. The operating system is Windows XP, the webserver a XAMPP Apache 2 with PHP 5.2

  Hello, I have a question. Is it possible to set up a system so that you have a private GIT server that you host, which automatically syncs with a remote one, hosted by a site like Sourceforge, and then you can commit your local to the private GIT server, and then when you have to merge the changes from your private wip branches that are on your private GIT over to the master/branch/tag from the public GIT, and then push the change to the public GIT? I ask this because I have a lot of personal work I would like to get working before putting it up for the public to see, and I'm shifting between several computers/operating systems in the process.   I had need of showing open file dialog in winform application. And one property of the file dialog, autoupgradeenabled which I set as a true, which is for updating the open file dialog according to operating system, like if application is running on xp then dialog is displayed different as in wista or window 7. So when I used that property as a true, and once in the machine where there was xp with 2.0 .net framework that open file dialog could not be opened. So I tried by doing it false then also it could not be opened in the machine with the xp and 2.0 framework. Then I tried by commenting that whole line means I removed that property from the code, then I tried and it was fine in xp machine with 2.0 framework. So problem is I cannot understand that why that property is not working by setting it false or true. Because by setting that property is should work in all os with all framework and dialog should be changed according to os. If not,then what is the meaning of that property ?

  Given an instance of IDirect3DDevice9, what approaches are available to put it in its original render state (i.e. the state it was in when the device was initially created)? The cleanest way that I've come across is to create a state block via IDirect3DDevice9::CreateStateBlock just after the device has been created so that it can be applied later. Unfortunately, I'm operating under the constraints of an existing project such that I can't modify the device creation code; by the time my component gets the device, its default state has been modified.   May be the question is a bit stupid, but I'll ask it. I read a lot about raw sockets in network, have seen several examples. So, basically with raw sockets it's possible to build own stack of headers, like stack = IP + TCP/UDP + OWN_HEADER. My question is, is it possible to get some kind of ready frame of first two(IP + TCP/UDP) from the linux kernel and then just append own header to them? The operating system in question is linux and the language is C. I cannot find any function which can do such a thing, but may be I'm digging in a wrong direction.

• Linux, C++ audio capturing (just microphone) library

  I'm developing a musical game, it's like a singstar but instead of singing, you have to play the recorder. It's called oFlute, and it's still in early development stage. In the game, I capture the microphone input, then run a simple FFT analysis and compare the results to typical recorder's frequencies, thus getting the played note. At the beginning, the audio library I was using was RtAudio, but I don't remember why I switched to PortAudio, which is what I'm currently using. The problem is that, from time to time, either it crashes randomly or stops capturing, like if there were no sound coming from the microphone. My question is, what's the best option to capture microphone input on Linux? I just need to open, read, and close a flow of bytes from the microphone. I've been reading this guide, and (un)surprisingly it says: I don't think that PortAudio is very good API for Unix-like operating systems. So, what do you recommend me?

• PHP Default Timezone issue on Fedora + Zend Server CE

  I have ZendServer CE (PHP 5.2) installed on a Fedora VM, and I have the system timezone set to 'America/Chicago'. I have date.timezone = 'UTC' in my php.ini file, and when I call date_default_timezone_get(), or display date('T') on a web page, it says 'CDT'. The documentation on php.net for date_default_timezone_get() says it follows this order when choosing a default timezone: - Reading the timezone set using the date_default_timezone_set() function (if any) - Reading the TZ environment variable (if non empty) - Reading the value of the date.timezone ini option (if set) - Querying the host operating system (if supported and allowed by the OS) If I change the system timezone through the 'setup' GUI, and reboot the server, date('T') returns whatever I changed the system timezone to, regardless of what php.ini says. I also don't have a TZ environment variable, and I am not currently using date_default_timezone_set() anywhere in my code. Any idea what might be going on? I realize I can always override the system timezone by calling date_default_timezone_set('UTC'), but I'd rather rely on the php.ini file if possible. Thanks for the help, Dave

• How to configure the web page of a web application to be browsed maximized ?

  I have developed a web project using PowerBuilder V12.0 and it is published in ASP.net web file formats (*.aspx). I have hosted my web project on a web server machine with operating system (Windows Server 2003 - Enterprise Edition) and IIS V6.0 as Web Server Hosting Application. I would like to make the home page (Default.aspx) opened maximized so that no internet toolbars appears in the Internet Explorere or any other internet browser like Firefox and so on. It seems this is a web server configuration and setting as now I host the same web application in two development web servers and it opens maximized in one of them and opens normal in the other so No changes are needed in the web project files. I do not know exactly what is this option or configuration,, Is there a property like window size or width and height in web configuration files like web.config and machine.config ? I guess there is a property like WindowSize:Maximized. If you had experience with that before please let me know the options and configurations needed to do that. Thanks for your help.

  I've a PHP library that uses a number of regular expressions featuring the \P expressions for multibyte strings, e.g. ((((?:\P{M}\p{M}*)+?)|(\'[^\']*\')|(\"[^\"]*\"))!)?\$?([a-z]{1,3})\$?(\d+) While this works on most builds, I've had a few reports of the regexp returning an error. Depending on Operating platform, the error messages from PCRE are: Compilation failed: PCRE does not support \L, \l, \N, \P, \p, \U, \u, or \X at offset n or Compilation failed: support for \\P, \\p, and \\X has not been compiled at offset n I know that I can probably test a regexp at the beginning of my code that uses \P, and trap for a returned error, then use that response to set a compatibility flag and provide a degraded (non UTF-8) regexp without the \P within the main body of my code based on that compatibility flag; but I was wondering if there was any simpler way to identify whether PCRE had been built without the --enable-unicode-properties or --enable-utf8 configuration switches. PHP provides access to PCRE_VERSION constant, but that won't help identify whether \P support is enabled or not.

What operating systems do i need to run on the machines, and what application should i use to manage the load balancing? • InetAddress.getLocalHost() throws UnknownHostException

  Hi, I am testing our server-application (written Java) on different operating systems and thought that OpenSolaris (2008.11) would be the least troublesome due to the nice Java integration. Turns out I was wrong, as I end up with a UnknownHostException try { computerName = InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName(); if (computerName.indexOf(".") > -1) computerName = computerName.substring(0, computerName.indexOf(".")).toUpperCase(); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } The output is: java.net.UnknownHostException: desvearth01: desvearth01 at java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost(InetAddress.java:1353) However, nslookup desvearth01 returns the correct IP address, and nslookup localhost returns 127.0.0.1 as expected. Also, the same code works perfectly on FreeBSD. Is there anything special to OpenSolaris that I am not aware of? Any hints appreciated, thanks.
