• E-Business Suite Proactive Support - Workflow Analyzer

  Overview The Workflow Analyzer is a standalone, easy to run tool created to read, validate and troubleshoot Workflow components configuration as well as runtime. It identifies areas where potential problems may arise and based on set of best practices suggests the Workflow System Administrator what to do when such potential problems are found. This tool represents a proactive way to verify Workflow configuration and runtime data to prevent issues ahead of time before they may become of more considerable impact on a production environment. Installation Since it is standalone there are no pre-requisites and runs on Oracle E-Business applications from 11.5.10 onwards. It is installed in the back-end server and can be run directly from SQL*Plus. The output of this tool is written in a HTML file friendly formatted containing the following on both workflow Components configuration and Workflow Runtime data: Workflow-related database initialization parameters Relevant Oracle E-Business profile option values Workflow-owned concurrent programs schedule and Workflow components status Workflow notification mailer configuration and throughput via related queues and table Workflow-relevant recommended and critical one-off patches as well as current code level Workflow database footprint by reading Workflow run-time tables to identify aged processes not being purged. It also checks for large open and closed processes or unhealthy looping conditions in a workflow process, among other checks. • Migrating Forms to Java or ADF, the truth and no FUD

  The question about migrating Forms to Java (or ADF or APEX) comes up time and time again.  I wanted to pull some core information together in a single blog post to address this question. The first question I always ask is "WHY" - Forms may still be a viable option for you so "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  Bottom line is whatever anyone tells you, its going to be a considerable effort and cost to migrate from Forms to something else so the business is going to want to know WHY you spend all those hard earned dollars switching from something that might have been serving you quite adequately. Second point, if you are going to switch, I would encourage you NOT to look at building a Forms clone.  So many times I see people trying to build an ADF application and EXACTLY mimic the Forms model - ADF is NOT a Forms clone.  You should be building to the sweet spot of your target technology, not your 20 year old client/server technology.  This is also the chance for the business to embrace change, so maybe look at new processes, channels and technology options that weren't available when you first developed your Forms applications. • How to indicate reliability when reporting availability of competencies

  We have employees with competencies: Pete Welder Carpenter Melissa Carpenter Assume they both work 40 hours/week, and have not yet been assigned work. We need to report the availability of these competencies, expressed in hours. As far as I can see now, we can report this in two ways: Method A. When someone has multiple competencies, count them both. Welder 40 hours Carpenter 80 hours Method B. When someone has multiple competencies, count an equal division of hours for each Welder 20 hours Carpenter 60 hours Method A has our preference: - A good planner will know to plan the least available competency first. If 30 hours of welding is planned, we will be left with 10 welder, 50 carpenter. - Method B has the disadvantage that the planner thinks he cannot plan the job when 30 hours of welding is required. However, if we report this we would like to give an estimate of the reliability of the numbers for each competency, i.e. how much are these over-reported? In my example A, would I say that carpenter is 100% over-reported, or 50%, or maybe another number? How would I calculate this for large numbers of competencies? I'm sure we are not the first ones dealing with this, is there a 'usual' way of doing this in planning? Additionally: - Would there be an even better method than A or B? - Optionally, we also have an preference order of competencies (like: use him/her in this order), Pete could be 1. welder 2. carpenter. Does this introduce new options?

• High Availability

  Udi Dahan presented at the UK Connected Systems User Group last night. He discussed High Availability and pointed out that people often think this is purely an infrastructure challenge. However, the implications of system crashes, errors and resulting data loss need to be considered and managed by software developers. In addition a system should remain both highly reliable (backwardly compatible) and available during deployments and upgrades. The argument is that you cannot be considered highly available if your system is always down every time you upgrade. For our recent BizTalk 2009 upgrade we made use of our Business Continuity servers (note the name, rather than calling them Disaster Recovery servers ? ) to ensure our clients could continue to operate while we upgraded the Production BizTalk servers. Then we failed back to the newly built 2009 environment and rebuilt the BC servers. Of course, in the event of an actual disaster there was a window where either one or the other set were not available to take over – however, our Staging machines were already primed to switch to production settings, having been used for testing the upgrade in the first place.   While not perfect (the failover between environments was not automatic and without some minimal outage) planning the upgrade in this way meant BizTalk was online during the rebuild and upgrade project, we didn’t have to rush things to get back on-line and planning meant we were ready to be as available as we could be in the event of an actual disaster.

• The Increasing Focus on Architecture

  If you follow my updates on Twitter or on the OTN ArchBeat page on Facebook you have probably noticed that I'm a regular reader of Joe McKendrick's SOA blog on ZDNet. Usually I'm content to simply share a link on my social networks when I find one of McKendrick's posts interesting. But with a recent post, In the cloud era, let's start calling IT what it is: 'Innovation Team', McKendrick hit on a point that warrants more than a quick link: "IT is no longer just a department full of people who code, build and maintain systems. IT is the business partner that plans and strategizes what types of technology solutions the business needs to move forward." Of course, what McKendrick is describing is an increased focus on architecture. Assuming that McKendrick's assessment is correct — and I do — that expanding focus, from coding, building, and maintaining systems to planning and strategizing technology solutions that serve the business, isn't limited to the organizational level. The individual roles within the IT organization will also have to shift to a more broadly architectural mindset. McKendrick's post references Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger's assessment of cloud computing as a critical "third model" of computing to emerge in the 50-year history of Information Technology. As computing itself evolves, the underlying roles that make computing possible must evolve accordingly. That evolution will be defined by an increased focus on architecture.

• Using a DataSet instead of custom business entities in soa and n-tier architecture

  I’m working on a large and a high volume transactional enterprise application which has been designed using n-tire application architecture .And it was developed in the .NET platform utilizing C#,VB.NEt, Framework 3.5, ObjectDataSources, DataSet, WCF, asp.net update panel, JavaScript ,JSON, 3rd Party tools. The application is supposed to accomplish a really scalable / easily maintained / robust application / integrations, and to make sure that my services are created using a format that can be understood by other systems. The problem is, this application is about 70% complete but now I was wondering if the following would cause us future issues, I’m using a DataSet and a DataTable to (get /set) the data (form /to) the stored procedure in the database using the ObjectDataSources and was wondering if this would prevent my application from achieving the above goals. Actually, I am not anti-OO. I write lots of classes for different purposes, but I didn’t use the entity objects(custom business entities) instead of the previous way because I have a large database that may contain 50 tables and I was just afraid to create entities for each table and then in the future if I need to change the schema of the database, it might cause a huge affect on the application ?

• Sandbox architecture in ASP.NET?

  Is it possible to develop a web-app in ASP.NET (framework is not a constraint), to have a sandbox architecture, and deploy widgets without disturbing the parent application? I expect both the parent application and the widget to be developed using .NET. EDIT: To elaborate, I want to have an web-app, say App1, and widgets (say wid1 and wid2). wid1 and wid2 should be like a plugin into App1, only difference is that, if I make any changes to wid1, I want to be able to deploy it without disturbing App1 or Wid2. The widgets can be something similar to a flash object, only that it needs to be developed on .net.

• java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError, mach-o but wrong architecture on Mac10.6.2

  I was trying to run a project in my local machine. I tried to load this jnilib file which I got from a running instance of this project on my Mac 10.6.2, System.load(lib.getAbsolutePath()); then I got this exception thrown: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError, mach-o but wrong architecture I have check the jnilib with file command: libScreenMatchProxy.jnilib: Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 I guess this is because the jnilib file is compiled in 32bit but the Java comes with Mac10.6 is 64bit. So I go to Java Preference and set Java to use 32bit first. But it didn't work. As mentioned above, this jnilib file is copied from a running instance of the project on my Mac, so it should work. I don't understand why it working in the installed application but not in my Eclipse.

• Structuring System Architecture in a Flex Web Application on a Budget (w/o Java)

  I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge. In the end I used a PureMVC (Presentation/Client) - ZendAMF (Communication) - MySql (Data) Layout. It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ? NOTE: I would just ask the adobe guys but they barely reply on their site. Thanks !

More particularly, I am interested to learn more about how "widgets" are implemented. I can't remember which system it was that I've seen tis one, but in the "Page Layout view" it had the ability to allow the end user to select a widget (thumbnail gallery, contact form, etc) from a list, and drag and drop it onto custom areas of the page. I know that this is not directly a programming question, but please could I seek advice/feedback on this. Thanks!

  does anyone know or predict how facebook's iphone app architecture could look like? More specific to what could be built into the app (client) what could be rendered on demand? Do you think the main menu layout of the app (where all the navigation buttons are there) are on the client or being rendered dynamically? Similarly apps like NYTimes or US News, what portion is done on the client and what is rendered dynamically. What could be the best way to render things on-demand. The only books I have found on client/server apps deal with the case of a thin client connecting to a remote database. Two good examples of what I mean are Mathematica and SuperCollider. I'm looking for platform- and language-agnostic discussion of the issues in developing a frontend/backend system. Especially useful topics would be allocation of responsibilities and options for message passing.

• Where to include business logic in a domain driven architecture

  I'm trying to learn effective DDD practices as I go, but had a fundamental question I wanted to get some clarity on. I am using ASP.NET WebForms and I am creating a situation where a user places an order. Upon order submission, the code-behind retrieves the user, builds the order from the inputs on the form, calls the User.PlaceOrder() method to perform add the order object to the user's order collection, and calls the repository to save the record to the database. That is fairly simply and straightforward. Now I need to add logic to send an order confirmation email, and I'm not really sure the proper place to put this code or where to call it. In the olden days I would simply put that code in the code-behind and call it at the same time I was building the order, but I want to get a step closer to solid proper architecture so I wanted to get some information.   While working on some code recently I discovered a neat little trick to find the maximum value across several columns….. So the starting point was finding the maximum date across several related tables and storing the maximum value against an aggregated record. • My architecture has a problem with views that required information from different objects. How can I solve this?

  I am building an architecture like this: These are my SW layers ______________ | | | Views | |______________| ______________ | | |Business Logic| |______________| ______________ | | | Repository | |______________| My views are going to generate my HTML to be sent to the user Business logic is where all the business logics are Repository is a layer to access the DB My idea is that the repository uses entities (that are basically the representation of the tables, in order to perform DB queries. The layers communicate between themselves using Business Objects, that are objects that represent the real-world-object itself. They can contain business rules and methods. The views build/use DTOs, they are basically objects that have the information required to be shown on the screen. They expect also this kind of object on actions and, before calling the business logic, they create BO. First question: what is your overall feeling about this architecture? I've used similar architecture for some projects and I always got this problem: If my view has this list to show : Student1, age, course, Date Enrolled, Already paid? It has information from different BO. How do you think one should build the structure? These were the alternatives I could think of: The view layer could call the methods to get the student, then the course it studies, then the payment information. This would cause a lot of DB accesses and my view would have the knowledge about how to act to generate this information. This just seems wrong for me. I could have an "adapter object", that has the required information (a class that would have a properties Student, Course and Payment). But I would required one adapter object for each similar case, this may get very bad for big projects. I still don't like them. Would you have ideas? How would you change the architecture to avoid this kind of problems? @Rory: I read the CQRS and I don't think this suits my needs. As taken from a link references in your link Before describing the details of CQRS we need to understand the two main driving forces behind it: collaboration and staleness That means: many different actors using the same object (collaboration) and once data has been shown to a user, that same data may have been changed by another actor – it is stale (staleness). My problem is that I want to show to the user information from different BO, so I would need to receive them from the service layer. How can my service layer assemble and deliver this information? Edit to @AndrewM: Yes, you understood it correctly, the original idea was to have the view layer to build the BOs, but you have a very nice point about the creation of the BO inside the business layers. Assuming I follow your advice and move the creation logic inside the business layer, my business layer interface would contain the DTOs, for instance public void foo(MyDTO object) But as far as I understand, the DTO is tightly coupled to each view, so it would not be reusable by a second view. In order to use it, the second view would need to build a specific DTO from a specific view or I would have to duplicate the code in the business layer. Is this correct or am I missing something?
