• Hopefully simple topic to spark some good opinions, Question is MySQL or SQL Server???

  I'm beginning development of a website and a high priority is for it to be extremely optimized, quick responses, etc. There will ultimately end up being large amounts of rows in the main tables (millions), so scalability is also important. It will need to use a database on the back-end for data storage and my web hosting service supports either MySQL or Sql Server. This website will be developed with .NET ASP.NET MVC with NHibernate (hopefully it can run in medium trust mode, as that is a requirement of my web hosting and reflection requirements of NHibernate may be problematic, maybe someone has a comment on this too). I'd also prefer to use the database that will require the least attention in regards to management. I don't want to have to be a DBA here. :) I wanted to through this topic out to the public to see what the community thinks? So MySQL or Sql Server, generally, which one would be better to use?

• Problems crossing the boundary between protected greasemonkey execution space and the unsafeWindow l

  Hi guys. Here is my problem: I've registered some callbacks into a Yahoo event driven webpage (betfair.com market views) and am trapping the betsPlaced events with a handler. So far so simple. Next stage is to get the event back into greasemonkey land, and while I know that from greasemoney space you can call unsafeWindow.stuff, there is no reverse operation (by design). So if I want to send the contents of the event over, say, a cometd queue, my carefully set up jquery, greasemonkey, YUI2, betfair environment fails by telling me that unsafeWindow processes cant call GM_ajax stuff. This is obviously safe and sane, but it basically stops me doing what I want to do. Has anyone tried doing this (ignore the cometd stuff, just general ajax calls) and succeeded? I've had a look at pages like this: http://wiki.greasespot.net/0.7.20080121.0%2B_compatibility but it doesnt appear to work for all the calls.

• Printings using CUPS, when can my app quit?

  I have an linux app that uses cups for printing, but I've noticed that if I print and then quit my app right away my printout never appears. So I assume that my app has to wait for it to actually come out of the printer before quitting, so does anyone know how to tell when it's finished printing?? I'm using libcups to print a postscript file that my app generates. So I use the command to print the file and it then returns back to my app. So my app thinks that the document is off to the printer queue when I guess it has not made it there yet. So rather than have all my users have to look on the screen for the printer icon in the system tray I would rather have a solution in code, so if they try and quit before it has really been sent off I can alert them to the fact. Also the file I generate is a temporary file so it would be nice to know when it is finished with so I can delete it.

• Long running, polling, queueing process for Python. What's the best stuff to use?

  Feel free to close and/or redirect if this has been asked, but here's my situation: I've got an application that will require doing a bunch of small units of work (polling a web service until something is done, then parsing about 1MB worth of XML and putting it in a database). I want to have a simple async queueing mechanism that'll poll for work to do in a queue, execute the units of work that need to be done, and have the flexibility to allow for spawning multiple worker processes so these units of work can be done in parallel. (Bonus if there's some kind of event framework that would also me to listen for when work is complete.) I'm sure there is stuff to do this. Am I describing Twisted? I poked through the documentation, I'm just not sure exactly how my problems maps onto their framework, but I haven't spent much time with it. Should I just look at the multiprocess libraries in Python? Something else?

  Hi, I'm thinking about the GlassFish platform for my new app. My app env. doesn't have a big volume of data to handle, but a lot of users writing/reading the same data A very volotile portion of the data updates every 200milsec by diff users. Therefore I'd like that type of data to be in memory only and accessible to the whole app My questions: How do I use a global object in memory with GF? a. use a static variable object - for that I guess I need to make sure GF is running on only 1 JVM -- how to I configure GF to run on 1 jvm? b. use HttpContext - same as a. • Test Jboss JMS externally - outside of the application server

  Hi All, I'm pretty new to the JMS functionality. I need to test a remote JMS which is on Jboss 4.2.1. I want to develop an external test (e.g from a main class) which sends and receives messages to/from the app. server. (I do have full access to the remote server.) My questions are: 1) How do I send messages to the Jboss JMS? 2) Where is the information needed to send a message located on the Jboss? ip, port, queue, user, pw, ect. to set up the local messaging test. 3) Is there a way to config/ develop a mechanism on the remote JMS Jboss server that sends back acknowledgments to the sender (in this case)?   Hello there, so here is my problem: I have several different configuarion servers. I have different calculations (jobs), I can predict how long approx. each job will take to be caclulated. Also I have priorities. My question is how to keep all machines loaded 99-100% and shedule the jobs in the best way. Each machine can do several calculations at the time. Jobs are pushed to the machine. Central machine knows current load of each machine. Also I would like to to assign some king of machine learning here, because I will know statistics of each job (started, finished, cpu load etc.). How to distribute jobs(calculations) in the best possible way, also keep in mind priority. Any suggestions ? Ideas ? Algorithms ?

• Frame skipping with OpenGL and WinAPI?

  Here is my situation. I'm creating a drawing application using OpenGL and WinAPI. My OpenGL frame has scrollbars which renders the screen and modifies GlTranslatef when it gets a scroll message. The problem is wen I get too many shapes the scrollbar is less responsive since it cannot rerender it each and every time it gets a scroll message. How could I make it so the scrollbar has priority. I want it to skip drawing if it would compromise the smoothness of the scrolling. I thought of doing rendering on a separate thread but I was told all UI things should stay on the same thread. We need to be able to stop and start the receiver without losing messages, but the old stream often hangs around, even after we call Thread.Abort on its thread. Any suggestions?

• What's the requests/second standard for scraping websites?

  This was the closest question to my question and it wasn't really answered very well imo: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2022030/web-scraping-etiquette I'm looking for the answer to #1: How many requests/second should you be doing to scrape? Right now I pull from a queue of links. Every site that gets scraped has it's own thread and sleeps for 1 second in between requests. I ask for gzip compression to save bandwidth. Are there standards for this? Surely all the big search engines have some set of guidelines they follow in regards to this.

• NServicebus DNS Entry for Machine location

  Hi Guys, I am trying to use a DNS entry for my NServicebus queue endpoint but no messages are being sent. It works fine when I enter the computer name or an IPAddress. I can ping the record and it resolves correctly so i'm wondering if it is possible to use a DNS record? • wordpress filters documentation? Trying to understand add_filter()

  I read over the documentation several times and have been having a hard time trying to figure out what is going on with the function. I'm more and more confused after looking at the documentation, looking over the source code as well. add_filter($tag, $hook, $priority, $args); it seems to me the new function extends the parent function. What puzzle's me is what parts of the hook becomes overridden. in some examples in the documentation i see that some variables are replaced with the $args in your new $tag. I almost understood it all here: http://www.andrewnacin.com/2010/05/18/rethinking-template-tags-in-plugins/ but then i couldn't figure out how you pass arguments and which eventually get overriden. thanks in advance.

• Is there a standard format string in ASP.NET to convert 1/2/3/... to 1st/2nd/3rd...?

  I have an integer in an Access database, which is being displayed in ASP.NET. The integer represents the position achieved by a competitor in a sporting event (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), and I'd like to display it with a standard suffix like 'st', 'nd', 'rd' as appropriate, rather than just a naked number. An important limitation is that this is for an assignment which specifies that no VB or C# code be written (in fact it instructs code behind files to be deleted entirely). Ideally I'd like to use a standard format string if available, otherwise perhaps a custom string (I haven't worked with format strings much, and this isn't high enough priority to dedicate significant time to*, but I am very curious about whether there's a standard string for this). (* The assignment is due tonight, and I've learned the hard way that I can't afford to spend time on things that don't get the marks, even if they irk me significantly.)

• android phone's scroll ball, D-Pad not working

  hi, i have a Cliq and a MyTouch phone. i am writing a game that requires a fire button. on the cliq, it's the center of the D-Pad, and on the MyTouch, the scroll ball. i am handling the onKeyDown events via a separate thread. it all works until i press the button too many times, meaning the key down event is no longer fired off. if i press the D-Pad down or scroll the ball down, then the fire button works again. i can only guess that maybe the message queue within the OS is full, therefore the fire button temporarily malfuntions. can someone help me? thanks.

  Greetings, I have just starting migrating to WLS 10.x and have noticed that the thread name [%t] for WL is quite verbose and more informative than I need for my deployment needs. Ultimately, I only care about the thread ID but WL gives me this:    [ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)' ~ Does anybody know if there is a way in log4j to write a custom filter that will allow me to override PatternLayout so I can parse the WLS Thread Name to just output the thread ID which in this case above is 0. I'd rather extend then customize as it makes upgrading libraries so much easier. Thanks :) - JsD

• How to make a secure login using UDID or device token?

  So I'm making an app where I want the users to be able add, edit and rate content, but I do not want to force them to register. Instead I was planning on just using their device id or device token to identify them. I'm planning on making both an iPhone and Android version, so I'm looking for a general solution, but the iPhone version has higher priority, so an iPhone specific solution would also be welcome. The problem is that I don't want just anyone to be able to use my web service by sending a phony device id or someone else's device id. How would the client prove to the server that it is providing the correct device id?

  I'm changing our webservices to an async model. And for that I have to change over a hundred methods. Doing it manually is one (unappealing) option. Is there no way to programmatically parse & change multiple functions/code files? • Need help with Drupal bulk mail low open rate for legitimate mailing list

  I've moved from constant contact to Drupal Simplenews/Mimemail/SMTP. Previously the open rate was around 50% for constant contact, but now it's 4-5% for the same list via the mentioned setup. Mail is getting out from the server, but it's having an issue anyway. Here's the setup: -The e-mail list consists of approximately 80,000 addresses which is queued at 10,000 e-mails per cron run (which runs hourly). -The server is a Dual Core2Quad machine with 2GB of RAM. -When mail is being sent, the mail queue will usually go up to ~1000 at the beginning of the hour before reducing to ~250 by the time the next cron occurs. -Newsletter is themed to display custom style for newsletter on send -Newsletter is received by some, but appears to be bounced by many (based on low open rate_ -I've added SPF, domain keys, and a PTR record to the DNS -Server hostname (listed in ptr) is different from hosted domain -Very low spam number via Spamassassin -IP and domain are not blacklisted -Mail goes out via SMTP module on delivery. Any ideas?

  I am trying to use Beyond Compare for Visual Diff in TortoiseHg. eg Right click on a modified file in explorer and select Visual Diff from TortoiseHg context menu... BeyondCompare opens but only shows the 'welcome' screen and not the file I want to diff. Am I missing something?   I want to implement a reliable mailing system with Ruby on Rails that sends emails in the background as sending email sometimes takes like 10 seconds or more so I don't want the user to wait. Some ideas I thought of: 1- Write to a table in DB a have a background process that go over and send email (concern: potential many reads/writes to DB slows down my application) 2- Messaging Queue background process / Rake task (concern: if server crashes queued mails will be lost also might eat up a lot of memory if many emails) I was wondering if you a know of a good solution that provides a balance between reliability and performance.

  i want to block the main thread until something else is done in the background. i used: result=[self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(calculate:) withObject:expression]; just bellow this line I am using result: [self use:result]; i dont want to use result until it is available. to achieve this I implemented calculate: { [[(AppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate] queue] waitUntilAllOperationsAreFinished]; calculating result... } and still, the result is used before it is calculated. so, i didnt block the main thread. pls help me do that. thanks
