• OAGi Architecture Council OAGIS Ten Work Group Completes first round review of Concepts for OAGIS Te

  Today the OAGi Architecture Council OAGIS Ten Work group completed the first level review of concepts for existing content for OAGIS Ten. This is one of the first milestones for OAGIS Ten. In doing this the concepts of key objects (the Nouns) have been identified along with the key context for their use. While OAGIS Ten remains a work-in-process the work group shows progress. Going forward the other councils will provide additional input to these and there own concepts and the contexts for each. Additionally, sub groups will focus on concepts for given domains. Stay tuned for future progress. If anyone is interested in joining the effort. OAGi membership is open to anyone, please see the OAGi Web site.

• Skipping video and audio with PS3MediaServer

  I'm using the latest PS3MediaServer build right from the repos suggested in the Ubuntu Wiki. I'm streaming multiple movies from my server (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to my PS3 over wireless. Sometimes, during some movies, the audio and the video will begin skipping. This can last anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds before it goes back to normal. I have a four core i5 processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM so I don't think my computer is having a hard time keeping up with the transcoding. So this leads me to believe it's either sub-optimal transcoding options from within PS3MS or my network can't handle the heat. Other than the out-of-box configuration, is there any way I can tweak the settings for the application to use my resources more efficiently?

• Unable to install any packages due to unrecoverable fatal error /var/lib/dpkg/diversions

  I am currently unable to install any packages. I receive the following error: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: too-long line or missing newline in `/var/lib/dpkg/diversions I have tried various approaches: sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get clean sudo dpkg-divert --list sudo apt-get check sudo apt-get install -f etc. but all to no avail. Either the output was apparently normal or the error above was thrown. I'm stumped as to how to proceed and would appreciate any assistance. If any further info is required just ask. Thanks for the reply. • Testing with Profiler Custom Events and Database Snapshots

  We've all had them. One of those stored procedures that is huge and contains complex business logic which may or may not be executed. These procedures make it an absolute nightmare when it comes to debugging problems because they're so complex and have so many logic offshoots that it's very easy to get lost when you're trying to determine the path that the procedure code took when it ran. Fortunately Profiler lets you define custom events that you can raise in your code and capture in a trace so you get a better window into the sub events occurring in your code. I found it very useful to use custom events and a database snapshot to debug some code recently and we'll explore both in this article. I find raising these events and running Profiler to be very useful for testing my stored procedures on my own as well as when my code is going through official testing and user acceptance. It's a simple approach and a great way to catch any performance problems or logic errors.

• Import images from camera in KDE with particular directory structure

  I have been using f-spot for a few years to manage my photo archive, which is about 50K images at the moment. With the development of f-spot slowing down in the recent years and me switching to KDE, I'm looking at using DigiKam, which seems to be very nice and packed with features beyond my wildest hopes :) One thing I'm missing though is the way f-spot was importing the images: it was creating subdirectories based on the image's shooting date: $HOME/Photos/2011/11/12/IMG_1234.jpg $HOME/Photos/2011/11/13/IMG_1235.jpg $HOME/Photos/2011/11/13/IMG_1236.jpg I don't seem to be able to find a way to make DigiKam to behave like this - although it has some settings to change the image filename according to some mask which may include shooting date, I see now way to tell it to create sub-directories. Is there a way to make DigiKam to behave like this? Or, alternatively, what is a good program to import images from a camera and save them on disk in subdirectories according to their shooting date?

  I just want a little clarification concerning hosted CMS like shopify.com, solidshops.com (i learnt shopify runs on ruby on rails) so let me be specific about hosted CMS based on Drupal :: www.buzzr.com, www.drupalgardens.com and www.pagebuild.net etc.. What i want to know is 1) Do they use the Multi-Site feature in Drupal to automatically creates all those 1000's of sites they host when a user sign up? 2) Do they create those 1000's of sites as sub-sites(if you like let me say subdomains)? 3) Do they use a different way other than the Multi-Site in Drupal?

  I would like to know if there's a known algorithm or best practice way to do the following: I have a collection with a subcollection, for example: R1 R2 R3 -- -- -- M M M N N L L A What i need is an algorithm to get the following result: R1, R2: M N L R2: A R3: M This is -not- what i want, it has more repeating values for R than the above: R1, R2, R3: M R1, R2: N L R2: A I need to group in way that i get the most optimized groups of R. The least amount of groups of R the better so i get the largest sub collections. Another example (with the most obvious result): R1 R2 R3 -- -- -- M M A V V B L L C Should result in: R1, R2: M V L R3: A B C I need to do this in LINQ/C#. Any solutions? Tips? Links?

• SEO consequences for merging country sites in a .com

  I am in the process of refactoring a number of rental portals I've built for a company with locations in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Instead of the current setting of each country site running under its own domain name: www.companyname.de www.companyname.ch www.companyname.at I would love to merge them all in this way: www.companyname.com/de www.companyname.com/ch www.companyname.com/at with the country TLDs doing a 301 redirect to the respective .com address. However, I have been repeatedly told not to do this due to likely problems with SEO - the business is very SEO dependent, and being a rental chain, needs to be strong in local results. So the question is: Is there an unavoidable hit in Search Engine Optimization when redirecting to a central .com domain? What measures can be taken to soften the blow? What comes to my mind is explicitly specifying a lang attribute in the html tag. Are there any other ways to specifically point out geographical location for sub-directories?

• What do I need to get a job with a major game company?

  I've been recently working with DirectX and getting familiar with game engines, sub-systems and have done game development for the last 5 years. I have a real question for those whom have worked in larger game making companies before. How is it possible to get to into these big game creators such as Ubisoft, Infinity Ward or EA. I'm not a beginner in my field and I'm going to produce a real nice 2D platform with my team this year, which is the result of 5 years 2D game creation experience. I'm working with prepared engines such as Unity3D or Game Maker software and using .Net with C# to write many tools for our production and proceeding in my way but never had a real engine programming experience 'till now. I'm now reading good books around this topic but I wanted to know: Is it possible to become an employee in big game company by just reading books? I mean beside having an active mind and new ideas and being a solution solver.

  I was having some problem with Software center. So tried to reinstall it. But While removing it give me an error. (Reading database ... 150986 files and directories currently installed.)   I have a multi-language site for English and Chinese (Hong Kong). My previous setting for Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk) had: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh-hk" xml:lang="zh-hk"> Shortly, I began to notice browser with other Chinese language sub-codes like zh-tw and zh-cn were seeing my English site in search engines instead of Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk), which makes sense. I want to change my html lang to: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh" xml:lang="zh"> Would this cover all Chinese language settings? Also, would Google prefer to show pages that match language subcodes of the browser/country (zh-hk for Hong Kong, zh-cn for Taiwan) than a general language code (zh)?

• Topics for development team cross training sessions

  Our team of developers are going to start holding monthly meetings for the purposes of cross training and knowledge improvement. We're looking for ideas for topics to discuss. We've already made a list of some obvious ones, such as discussions/training on specific applications, proper usage of TFS for source control, bug tracking and code reviews, coding standards, and corporate architecture. The problem we're having is that we are a cross-platform development team so we don't want to look at topics that only apply to certain members of the team (Sql, .NET, reporting, third party apps, etc). We'll use sub-team meetings for those. So what other topics that would apply across a broad development team would be good for these training sessions?

• Architecture guidelines for a "single page web-app"

  I'm going to start a side project to build a "single page" web application. The application needs to be real-time, sending updates to the clients as changes happen. Are there any good resources for best-practice approaches wrt the architecture for these kinds of applications. The best resource I've found so far is the trello architecture article here: http://blog.fogcreek.com/the-trello-tech-stack/ To me, this architecture, although very sexy, is probably over-engineered for my specific needs - although I do have similar requirements. I'm wondering if I need to bother with a sub/pub at the server side, could I not just push updates from the server when something happens (e.g. when the client sends an update to the server, write the update to the db, and then send an update to the clients). Tech-wise, I'm probably looking to build this out in Node.JS or maybe Ruby, although the architecture guidelines should to some extent apply to any underlying server technologies.

The software/hardware environment I currently do development in is quite slow with respect to compilation times and time it takes the whole system to test. The system is quite old/complex and thus splitting it into a several smaller, more manageable sub-projects is not feasible in a neare future. I have realized is what really hinders the development progress is my code reading skills. • Network Manager Applet menu freezes and does not respond

  Since the latest update in Ubuntu 10.10, the nm-applet has started doing some strange things. I boot up the PC, all is fine, internet works, etc... but after a period of time, approx and hour, the nm-applet menu in the Gnome panel fails to respond. when I click on the icon, the menu appears, all looks well, but when I select any option, eg DISCONNECT, nothing happens. Even the VPN sub menu disappears (no triangle to select the menu.) However I do not lose the network connection... If I Run this script: killall nm-applet /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart nm-applet all returns as normal, for a while... weird? i tried uninstall/reinstall... I even reinstalled Ubuntu, but once the latest updates are applied this issues arises... Any help?

• Mass Metadata Updates with Folders

  With the release of WebCenter Content PS5, a new folder architecture called 'Framework Folders' was introduced.  This is meant to replace the folder architecture of 'Folders_g'.  While the concepts of a folder structure and access to those folders through Desktop Integration Suite remain the same, the underlying architecture of the component has been completely rewritten.  One of the main goals of the new folders is to scale better at large volumes and remove the limitations of 1000 content items or sub-folders within a folder.  Along with the new architecture, it has a new look and a few additional features have been added.  One of those features are Query Folders.  These are folders that are populated simply by a query rather then literally putting items within the folders.  This is something that the Library has provided, but it always took an administrator to define them through the Web Layout Editor.  Now users can quickly define query folders anywhere within the standard folder hierarchy. • How to integrate game logic in game engines

  Recently I'm working on a 2d game engine example in .Net with C#. My main problem is that I can't figure out how I should include the game logic within the game. Currently I have a base engine which is a set of classes that they are running sub-systems like Render, Sound, Input and Core functionality. There is an editor which helps the user to add resources, build levels, write scripts and other stuffs. I came up with an idea to use Reflection and CSharpCodeProvider from my editor to compile the written code. This way I can get an executable of my product too. This way is quite well but I would like to know what's really the solution and architecture to do this. My engine's role is 2d platform. The scripting language is C# right now because I can't consist any other embeddable language for now. The game needs compilation and CSharpCodeProvider is the only way for me to do it meantime.

• Unable to sync files not located in the Ubuntu One folder

  I have the option to sync files in nautilus, however when the option is selected nothing happens. I am able to SLOWLY sync files in the Ubuntu One folder (unless in sub-folders), but only there. Why give the option if it does not work? This really is still beta, so to charge for this service is terrible. I am a little frustrated at the moment, I have tried all sorts; removing accounts to a fresh Ubuntu install! I am at a loss :-( Can anyone else sync files outside the Ubuntu One folder, if so how? • LaTeX-like display programming environment

  I used to be a hobbyist programmer, but now I'm also a fairly experienced physicist and find myself programming to solve certain problems quite a lot. In physics, we use variables with superscripts, subscripts, italics, underlines, etc etc. To bridge this gap to the computer we usually use LaTeX. Now, I generally use MATLAB for handling any data and such, and find it very irritating that I can't basically use LaTeX for variable names. Something as simple as sy has to be named either sigma_y or some descriptive name like peak_height_error. I don't necessarily want full on workable LaTeX in my code, but I do want to be able to use greek letters and super/sub-scripts at the very least. Does this exist?

• Project planning and customer tracking system

  First off, sorry if this is the wrong 'stack' site, but it seemed like a good place to start. I'm happy to report that my services as a web developer are starting to be in quite a lot of demand, and I have a few existing and potentially new customers all lining up - but I'm finding it very hard to keep track of everything. What I'm hoping for is some (preferably web-based) system which I can use to keep track of who my customers are, the various projects that I've got going on for them, and (if possible) the individual sub-tasks that make up each project. What would be even better is if the relevant customer was able to log into the site, and see the process of their projects. I do hope you know what I'm talking about, and that you'll be able to offer some suggestions of either web-base sites that offer something along these lines, or of some open source solution or something like that?
