Hi all,
I'm having some trouble starting Glassfish on port 80 - doing so yields the following error:
0.0.0.0:80: initialize: name or service not known
Any tips?
I switched to Chrome half a year back because Firefox had become sluggish on my Linux box (both Ubuntu and OpenSuse). 6 months later and the problem remains - anyone know what is going on and any tips to improve? I still need to use Firefox occasionally for Firebug.
What I seek is advice, or experience of, actually USING a Windows 7 Restore Point in ANGER.
I have created the restore points, can see them, and read the instructions. I also realize it won't harm my documents, but are there any pit-falls?
Actually the machine is a quiet, under-used with no recent program additions, so I don't anticipate any complications, nevertheless gotchas and tips are appreciated.
I'm deploying a simple ASP.NET application on IIS 7.5 and I'd like to know what changes I should make or configurations I should check to protect my server.
Will the default settings be secure enough? I'm very much a beginner when it comes to server management so any tips will be very helpful.
I had installed MySQL from the command line when I setup a local web server with custom modules on my Snow Leopard box. I recently discovered MAMP and its just easier to work with it than with the personal web server Apple has and via command like utils.
I uninstall ports completely but still see 'mysqld' in my Activity Monitor. I would like to uninstall this cleanly. Any tips?
Using the "netsh interface portproxy" I added a port forwarding to a Windows Server 2k3.
The command "netsh interface portproxy show all" shows the added forwarding.
On the other hand, any client connecting to the incoming port will receive a "connection refused" message. netstat also doesn't show the incoming port as listening.
The machine firewall is disabled.
There is any other way to setup port forwarding on Windows or debugging tips?
Specifically a liteon dvd multi recorder. Which can burn and read dvd's.
Is there a specific number of burns which you can use? And after that, the burner will no longer work?
Do you know of any useful tips on how to have a longer dvd rom lifespan? If it has really a lifespan.
I just built a new PC the other day.
Specs...
Processor: Intel i7-930 quad core CPU
CPU Cooler: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212
Motherboard: AsRock X58 Extreme 3
RAM/Memory: 6gb G-Skill tripple channel DDR3 memory (3 sticks of 2gb planning to get another kit to make it 12gb total soon)
Operating System Hard drive: Intel X25-M 80GB Mainstream SATA2 Solid State Drive
Video Cards: 2 XFX ATI Redeon HD 4650 cards to run 3-4 monitors
Case: Lian Li PC-B10 Midtower case
Power Supply: Antec TruePower New TP-750 Blue 750W
Operating System Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Not sure if the specs are helpful at all but I posted them just in case.
So I got everything put together and running great so far but I need some advice/ideas/help/tips.
I got the SSD drive in hopes of using it strictly for my windows 7 install along with all my other programs I install. I am then going to get another drive or 2 just for data (video, music, photos, etc).
So my plan is to just install the new data drives and then in windows 7 I will change my "My documents" "My Music" "My Video" "MY Photos" library's to be located on the data drives instead of the OS SSD drive.
I would ultimately like to install all my programs with my windows install on the SSD drive and then create an IMAGE of the drive and then 6 months down the road if things are sluggish I can just wipe the drive and restore my IMAGE with all my programs and settings in tact still.
So here are some questions now.
1)
How can I verify that TRIM is working on my new SSD?
2)
Is there anything above that I missed that I should be doing? I think I once read that there is a page file or some sort of file that windows changes a lot and that it should be moved off f an SSD an onto my data drives. DOes anyone know what I might of heard? If you do can you explain the pros and cons of doing such a thing as well as how to possibly?
3)
Any tips or advice to get the best performance from all this, I built a pretty nice system and I just want to make it stay that way as long as I can.
Hi, I have an apache 2 web server working with a tomcat 6 servlet container running on ununtu 9.1, integrated via mod_proxy.
I have the following time mismatch problem:
When apache log to its access-log
file, the date/time is correct.
When a grails app running on tomcat inserts date-related
information in the DB, the time is three
hours ahead
Any tips on how to fix tomcat's datetime problem ?
Thanks

Does anyone have experience running Xen dom0 on a more recent kernel than the stock 2.6.18?
What host distro are you running? What release of Xen (or hg/git changeset)? What set of patches are you using on kernel source? (Has anyone got the pvops dom0 stuff working in production or is it better to stick with something like the SUSE patches?
Any other tips and tricks to running a more recent kernel version as dom0 would be helpful.
I have heard, that it should be somehow possible to use just one partition with Windows XP, and be able to mirror that by enabling RAID 1 in XP. I'd appreciate tips how to do this.
If this is true, is it also possible to enable RAID for an existing Windows installation?
I installed Apache with FastCGI (mod_fastcgi), suExec and PHP on my local development box. Working perfectly, expecting one thing.
Let's say I have two users:
user1 - /home/user1/public_html
user2 - /home/user2/public_html
I discovered a serious security hole in my configuration: I can include a file from user2 web root in user1 file. How to prevent? Any tips?
php-cgi process is running under correct user.
I've edited a pps file which was made with the 2003 version and saved also as compatible with Power Point 97-2003 but a friend a mine can't see the last version of the file. The original file can be seen by my computer friend.
What can I do to make the new version of the pps file to be viewable on the computer of my friend? Any tips? Where/what else do I have to check/do ?
I have a few Window XP clients that are part of a domain, when trying to set the permissions on the security tab and pressing location to search the AD for users it only presents the local machine...
So I follow this path
Right click folder Properties Security Add
in the locations field where I would normally see the windows domain, I am only seeing the local machine name???
So only users that have a local account can be added to the folders permissions...
Any tips would be appreciated
I have several laptops so I use a USB key version of Firefox to keep my environment as I move around. I followed the suggestions offered on the Firefox web site (turn off the cache and history etc.) and its better but still much slower than the normal version.
Other than buying a new, super fast flux-capacitor based USB key, what other tips and tricks can I use?
Will subversion accept usernames such as [email protected]?
We are using svn+ssh with public key authentication as per the official svn guide's ssh tips and tricks section.
Basically, we pass svnserve with the --tunnel-user={username} command, will subversion be OK with that username having @ and . in it?
Thanks.
I'd be following the procedure outlined here (unless of course someone has a better way to do it), and I'm wondering if I could just have some help being pointed in the right direction on how to start.
Basically I need help first on HOW to create functions, and general tips on making it adjustable for varying number of columns etc. This may be a very complicated task, as I have no previous experience making SQL functions, so please let me know if this is a difficult task for an SQL noobie working with MS SQL 2005.
Apache on the server is set to find index.php by default, and that works for a normal folder.
However, I have a .htaccess rule to route all requests through my routing script:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php [QSA,L]
With these .htaccess contents, the server returns a 404 error. Only by specifying /index.php does the routing script get called.
Any tips on what I am doing wrong?
I've just got a new Laptop. I've installed all applications I need, for now. Are there any best practices or tips on how to keep my windows machine clean and running smoothly? Or do I have to re-install everything every 6 months?
Computer cables and external devices are a continuous source of frustration for everybody who likes a clean working environment. The more devices you add to your home office, the more disastrous the situation under the table becomes: cords falling behind the desk, ugly cables running along the sides and under of the desk, making it almost impossible to clean and remove the dust.
This is not my office, but I've seen similar "setups:"
I'm looking for good tips/products which help me in keeping the all cables somehow under control and organized.
I have a few applications that are installed using InstallShield -- during the installation one or two parts of the application are installed with msi's. I've tried recording an iss file to instruct the installation process, but these installations always seem to freeze up. I've also tried installing in a sequence, first installing the msi's, but this doesn't prevent the main installation from trying to install these.
Any tips/suggestions/ideas?
Thanks!

Using latest version, just downloaded it.

When the table of contents is generated, it numbers sections based upon their heading.
section 1
section 2
2.1 section 2.1
2.2 secttion 2.2
section 3
and so on.
I would like these section numbers to appear at the paragraph level also.
1, (section 1 header text)
... section 1 content ...
2, (section 2 header text)
... section 2 content ....
Any tips?
