  • Platform independent remote file editing

    I've been investigating possibilities on editing remote files from a website without having a need to download and upload the files manually while editing. So far I've ruled out WebDAV as a possibility since it is cumbersome to use on any platform (it either requires manual setup or works unreliably). Currently I'm looking in to various Applets, but they mostly target either uploading or downloading, not file editing. What I'm currently looking for is an applet that downloads the document, launches the application that is meant to open the file and then monitors the file for changes and uploads the changed file (either automatically or by prompting the user first). I know that I'm not alone with this scenario, so i'm looking for solutions that others have thought of.

  • How can I clear the appcache on the Google Chrome iPad app?

    I've written a little HTML5 based web app that I am trying to debug on the iPad using the Chrome for iPad app. I have added a cache.manifest file to my app which has some heavy caching in it of most static resources however since I am now wanting to debug the app I need a way to clear this cache. I know that on Chrome for Mac you can use: chrome://appcache-internals/ however this page does not exist in the iPad app of Chrome. The regular "Clear Browsing Data" does not empty the appcache —at least not in my case. Does anyone know how I can clear the appcache for the Chrome iPad app?

  • Can I update window.location.hash without having the web page scroll?

    Using JavaScript, is there a way to update window.location.hash without scrolling the web page? I have clickable title elements that toggle the visibility of a div directly beneath them. I want the /foo#bar in the history when clicking titles but don't want the page scrolling about. So when navigating away from /foo#bar I'll be able to use the back button and have the div whose ID is in window.location.hash be visible upon return. Is this behavior possible?

    Hi, I need to know what can be the main reasons (apart from the basics like grouping CSS selectors, reducing image size, using image sprite etc.) which makes a website slow on Internet Explorer, because my website works fine on the others like FF, chrome etc. Is it the huge use of Javascript framework (ie. jQuery, extjs, prototype)? Is it because of the use of plugins based on JS framework? Should I use core javascript and remove the use of any js framework? Should I try to avoid using jQuery(document).ready()? in case of jQuery framework? Above some of the questions which I know and please answer the questions which I couldn't ask because of lesser knowledge about these. I need to make my website perform well on IE (6,7,8) also please suggest. Thanks

    i just went to test a website in firefox 4 (beta 10) and the horizontal menu is showing up vertically. Here is the website: http://www.fsf60k.org/ In chrome, the menu is horizontal like this: but in firefox 4 it shows up like this: I am using the superfish horizontal menu. The examples on the website seems fine in firefox 4. how would i begin to investigate if this is a bug in firefox 4 or is there something wrong with my horizontal menu code??

  • IE7 Debug Issue - Word Breaks in <li>

If you look at this page: http://vitaminjdesign.com/IAM/company/ you will notice that the vertical nav (ul id="leftcol") is displaying incorrectly in IE7. Each word appears on its own line.   • Equivalent to produce field glow in other browsers?

    I was long using this to add a glow to focused fields, I accessed my page from Firefox for the first time and realized it doesn't work on it, and most likely not on explorer either. border: 1px solid #E68D29; outline-color: -webkit-focus-ring-color; outline-offset: -2px; outline-style: auto; outline-width: 5px; I had copy pasted it from another page so I'm not quite sure how it works. What is the equivalent for Firefox or Explorer? I mean how do I make a similar glow in other browsers? Thanks

  • Links in rounded boxes? In ALL browsers (yep included IE8)

    I tried maaaany script but every time I get stuck in something bad. My goal is to create rounded boxes for links. You can see an example of I'm talking about here in the read more link (effects not necessary). Very common I know, but I want to make it work in eeeevery browsers at least safari, FF, chrome and most important IE7+ (IE6 not necessary...). The script that took me closest to the solution is Cornerz but I can't fix a very bad issue on IE8. Does anybody knows a way to get rid of this or to achieve my goal? I know when an index file is not present to a directory, files inside that directory are no longer private and will be visible to the browsers when point (eg yoursite.com/images/).     As detailed here among other places, the only valid characters in a html/css class name is a-z, A-Z, 0-9, hyphen and underscore, and the first character should be a letter. But in practice, what characters are in fact supported by most browsers? More specifically, I wonder what browsers properly understands a slash (/) in a class name, and what browsers support class names starting with a number. I'm primarily interested in getting an answer for html rather than xhtml, in case there is a difference. Thank you.

  • jQuery overlay not working in IE6, Opera

    Hi, I've been scratching my head for hours trying to figure this out. I have this page: http://173.203.72.190/default.aspx. On clicking 'Any Cuisine', a sort of overlay is supposed to open. It works fine in nearly all browsers except IE6 and Opera. In IE6 and Opera, the jQuery 'overlay' won't open. Anybody have any ideas why this might be?

  • Why does this page look different between IE, Firefox & Chrome

    In Firefox it looks just like I want it to look, in IE it looks "a bit weird", and in Chrome it's all twisted. What non-standard HTML I am using that makes it looks so different between browsers? Specifically, how can I fix the Chrome & IE versions to look more like Firefox? Note that Chrome only goes haywire if all or almost all columns have the yellow stickies. If one or two columns are empty, then Chrome displays the page just like Firefox. The full HTML is at this pastebin.

    Is there any safe way to detect, on a web page, client side (JS), whether user has an Google/Yahoo/Live/? account? I know about some suspicious ways to do this by styling visited links and then sneaking on computed style attribute, but it's more of a hack, Mozilla and maybe other are planning to crack down on this, as it might be abused. But I need this to allow users more integration with their identity providers, like: Have a Google account? ~ load contacts for sharing from Google Contacts API Have an Yahoo account? ~ load contacts for sharing from Yahoo Contacts API none of the above? show no link I don't want to provide all these options to all visitors, would be nice if I can detect the account, and provide integration only in that case.

    I was wondering where I can find some information how IE8 actually handles xml header... for example how is handling <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> different to <?xml version="1.0"?>.   • What's the current (as of April 2010) state of affairs regarding <object> vs <embed> in HTML?

    The age old question. <object> vs <embed>. From what I gather, <object> is the XHTML-compliant way of doing things, while <embed> is for legacy support. I'm currently building a Flash application that will contain a pre-made embedding code for users to copy and paste, and I'm wondering if it's feasible to simply dump the <embed> tag altogether. Which browsers would be unable to load my application if I gave my users an <object>-only embed code? Thanks :)
