• Spring Roo Database Reverse Engineer with Oracle

  So you are trying to reverse engineer an Oracle database with roo? Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions with the Oracle JDBC Drivers, this is a little difficult. There are a few blog posts and forum threads that address the problem but I figured I would post what worked for me here. First, you need to download the appropriate Oracle Drivers from Oracle. The required login, stringent password requirements, nosy registration form, and general system instability made this a pretty painful step for me. I’d also like to say that companies that have password requirements that don’t allow symbols (or any other non-standard requirement) have a special place in my heart. Having to recover my password every time I go to your site virtually guarantees I will only go there when I absolutely have to (not often). Anyways, once you have it downloaded you need to install is with maven: mvn install:install-file -Dfile=~/Downloads/ojdbc6.jar -DgroupId=com.oracle -DartifactId=ojdbc6 -Dversion=11.2.0.3 -Dpackaging=jar -DgeneratePom=true Here comes the fun part. You need to create an osgi wrapper for the driver to install it in roo. Otherwise, roo cannot see the driver. Create a new folder and put the contents of the oracle roo addon pom gist I created. Now build it with maven. • C IDE for Mac needed

  I'm looking for heavy-duty C/C++ IDE for Mac that would satisfy the following criteria: Work with big projects (~5000 files, some of them 100K big) efficiently. Have good navigation both file-based and symbol-based - i.e. "go to file", "go to function" etc. with autocompletion support. Support for "go to declaration/definition" for symbols - functions, structures, etc. Auto-adding new files in folders already in the project. Support for code completion for values, function names, etc. At least rudimentary CPP macro understanding - i.e. #define foo bar then foo() should take me either to #define or to actual bar. I understand full CPP parsing may be hard, but I hope for at least the obvious cases. Support for displaying parameter names/types by function name, preferably - integrated with the previous item, for functions defined in the project. Support for libc would be nice too :) (optional) Cross-project search support (I can manage with grep -r if everything else works) (optional) SVN support, at least to some extent (update, commit, mark updated) Is there such editor around? Free would be nice, but I'm ready to part with some money if it's good enough. I'm using TextMate now but I'm not satisfied with it. Tried Xcode but it seems to not be able to handle a large project - it just crashed...

• OO Design, how to model Tonal Harmony?

  I have started to write a program in C++ 11 that would analyse chords, scales, and harmony. The biggest problem I am having in my design phase, is that the note 'C' is a note, a type of chord (Cmaj, Cmin, C7, etc), and a type of key (the key of Cmajor, Cminor). The same issue arises with intervals (minor 3rd, major 3rd). I am using a base class, Token, that is the base class for all 'symbols' in the program. so for example: class Token { public: typedef shared_ptr<Token> pointer_type; Token() {} virtual ~Token() {} }; class Command : public Token { public: Command() {} pointer_type execute(); } class Note : public Token; class Triad : public Token; class MajorTriad : public Triad; // CMajorTriad, etc class Key : public Token; class MinorKey : public Key; // Natural Minor, Harmonic minor,etc class Scale : public Token; As you can see, to create all the derived classes (CMajorTriad, C, CMajorScale, CMajorKey, etc) would quickly become ridiculously complex including all the other notes, as well as enharmonics. multiple inheritance would not work, ie: class C : public Note, Triad, Key, Scale class C, cannot be all of these things at the same time. It is contextual, also polymorphing with this will not work (how to determine which super methods to perform? calling every super class constructors should not happen here) Are there any design ideas or suggestions that people have to offer? I have not been able to find anything on google in regards to modelling tonal harmony from an OO perspective. There are just far too many relationships between all the concepts here.

  The method is described in Dragon Book, however I read about it in ""Parsing Techniques" by D.Grune and C.J.H.Jacobs". I start from my understanding of building channels for NFA: channels are built once, they are like water channels with current you "drop" lookahead symbols in right places (sources) of the channel, and they propagate with "current" when symbol propagates, there are no barriers (the only sufficient things for propagation are presence of channel and direction/current); i.e. lookahead cannot just die out of the blue Is that right? If I am correct, then eof lookahead should be present in all states, because the source of it is the start production, and all other production states are reachable from start state. How the DFA is made out of this NFA is not perfectly clear for me -- the authors of the mentioned book write about preserving channels, but I see no purpose, if you propagated lookaheads. If the channels have to be preserved, are they cut off from the source if the DFA state does not include source NFA state? I assume no -- the channels still runs between DFA states, not only within given DFA state. In the effect eof should still be present in all items in all states. But when you take a look at DFA presented in book (pdf is from errata): DFA for LALR (fig. 9.34 in the book, p.301) you will see there are items without eof in lookahead. • Speed up loading of test results from builds in Visual Studio

  I still see people complaining about the long time it takes to load test results from a TFS build in Visual Studio. And they make a valid point, it does take a very long time to load the test results, even for a small number of tests. The reason for this is that the test results is not just the result of the test run but also all the binaries that were part of the test run. This often also means that the debug symbols (*.pdb) will be downloaded to your local machine. This reason for this behaviour is that it letsyou re-run the tests locally. However, most of the times this is not what the developer will do, they just want to know which tests failed and why. They can then fix the tests and rerun them locally. It turns out there is a way to load only the test results, which is much faster. The only tricky bit is to find the location of the .trx file that is generated during the build. Particularly in TFS 2010 where you often have multiple build agents, which of corse results in different paths to the trx file. Note: To use this you must have read permission to the build folder on the build agent where the build was executed. Open the build result for the build Click View Log Locate the part where MSTest is invoked. When using test containers, it looks like this:   Note: You can actually search in the log window, press Ctrl+F and you will get a little search box at the bottom. Nice! On the MSTest command line call, locate the /resultsfileroot parameter, which points to the folder where the test results are stored Note that this path is local for the build server, so you need to replace the drive letter with the server name: D:\Builds\Project\TestResults to \Project\TestResults">\\<BuildServer>\Project\TestResults Double-click on the .trx file and you will notice that it loads much faster compared to opening it from the build log window

If you edit the page, we run the new content through some filters to escape out stuff and make sure it is valid html. After the process, the link above gets converted to this: <iframe frameborder="0" height="300" src="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&amp;hl=en_US&amp;key=0AiV6Vq32hBZIdHZRN3EwWERLZHVUT25ST01LTGxubWc&amp;output=html&amp;widget=true" width="500"></iframe> This will work on every browser except for chrome. Chrome thinks I am running JS in the src. I narrowed it down to a combination of double quotes and escaped '&' symbols. If i revert one of those back to the original state, the iframe works. I work in ruby where ' and " have different behaviors. Is Chrome doing the same thing? Is there a way to turn that off?

• Is there a Source Insight alternative?

  I am not a developer, but for my work I trace a lot of codes. It is actually rather difficult reading other people's code, especially for bigger projects. Source Insight is a great application that stores all the symbols in a data base, so you can see a new function being called, click on it and see how the function is written. You can see all the referrer of a object or jump to a caller. You don't need to break the train of thought and think up shell commands just to find these things every time you ran into a new variable/structure/function from some other files. I have it running on WINE, but there are little glitches that sometimes gets in the way. I know people will mention C-scope, I've tried it, but it really isn't the same. So, with so many huge open source projects out there for Ubuntu, are there native tools to help read them efficiently? EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions, but does CODE::BLOCKS or CodeLite provide abilities to see the function that the mouse clicked on without jumping to it, so I can see the caller and callee at the same time?

  Please note, I am asking about writing LALR parser, not writing rules for LALR parser. What I need is... ...to mimic YACC precedence definitions. I don't know how it is implemented, and below I describe what I've done and read so far. For now I have basic LALR parser written. Next step -- adding precedence, so 2+3*4 could be parsed as 2+(3*4). I've read about precedence parsers, however I don't see how to fit such model into LALR. I don't understand two points: how to compute when insert parenthesis generator how to compute how many parenthesis the generator should create I insert generators when the symbols is taken from input and put at the stack, right? So let's say I have something like this (| denotes boundary between stack and input): ID = 5 | + ..., at this point I add open, so it gives ID = < 5 | + ..., then I read more input ID = < 5 + | 5 ... and more ID = < 5 + 5 | ; ... and more ID = < 5 + 5 ; | ... At this point I should have several reduce moves in normal LALR, but the open parenthesis does not match so I continue reading more input. Which does not make sense. So this was when problem. And about count, let's say I have such data < 2 + < 3 * 4 >. As human I can see that the last generator should create 2 parenthesis, but how to compute this? After all there could be two scenarios: ( 2 + ( 3 *4 )) -- parenthesis is used to show the outcome of generator or (2 + (( 3 * 4 ) ^ 5) because there was more input Please note that in both cases before 3 was open generator, and after 4 there was close generator. However in both cases, after reading 4 I have to reduce, so I have to know what generator "creates".

  Is there someone who could help me achieve the following points on this problems? I can't seem to get it. I tried using toCharArray and Scanner to achieve this, but it doesn't work, nor do I know how to make this things possible for my word game. :( · Get a popular name of person, place, verse, saying or event from the user. This may have a single or multiple words in it. · Create a copy of this string to an array where each letter is replaced with a hyphen (-) and each space is replaced with an underscore (_). Symbols and numbers will remain shown. · The program then asks a letter from the user. If the letter is in the inputted string, then it should be shown on the array at the same position it is shown in the string. Meaning, the letter replaces the hyphen (-) at the correct position of the array. · The program again prompts for a letter from the user and replaces the hyphen (-) of the array if it exists on the inputted string. This will be repeatedly done until such time each hyphen (-) is replaced with the correct letter. · If the user inputs an invalid letter, that is, a letter that does not exist on the inputted string, then the program should inform the user. If this happens 3 times while there is still at least one hyphen on the array, then the program should inform the user that he lost the game and showing him the whole correct string. · If the user completes the game, meaning, all hyphens have been replaced with the correct letters; then the program should congratulate the user for a job well done.

• xmodmap modifications aren't enough - anything else I can do?

  I'm using an Apple keyboard which has some annoyances compared to other keyboards. Namely, the Alt_L and Super_L keys are swapped, and the bar and less keys are swapped ("|" and "<"). I've written an Xmodmap file to swap the keys back: keycode 49 = less greater less greater onehalf threequarters keycode 64 = Super_L NoSymbol Super_L keycode 94 = bar section bar section brokenbar paragraph keycode 108 = Super_R NoSymbol Super_R keycode 133 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L keycode 134 = Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R I did this by identifying the keys using xev and the default modmap xmodmap -pke and swapping the keycodes. xev now identifies all my keys as correct, which is awesome! I can also use the correct keys to type the bar and less than symbols. (I followed this answer on askubuntu: How do I remap certain keys?) But it seems the change isn't very deep. For instance, the Super key is now broken in the Compiz Settings Manager. No shortcuts involving the Super key works (but the Alt key does). Also the settings dialog for Gnome Do doesn't heed the changes in xmodmap, and I can't open the Gnome Do window anymore if I use any of the remapped keys. So to summarize, everything broke. I would like a deeper way of telling Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro for that matter) which keys are which on the keyboard. Is there a way to edit the Keyboard Layout directly? I'm using the Norwegian Bokmål keyboard layout. Does it reside in a file somewhere I could edit? Any comments, previous experiences or relevant stray thoughts would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

• What's so great about Clojure?

  I've been taking a look at Clojure lately and I stumbled upon this post on Stackoverflow that indicates some projects following best practices, and overall good Clojure code. I wanted to get my head around the language after reading some basic tutorials so I took a look at some "real-world" projects. After looking at ClojureScript and Compojure (two the the aforementioned "good" projects), I just feel like Clojure is a joke. I don't understand why someone would pick Clojure over say, Ruby or Python, two languages that I love and have such a clean syntax and are very easy to pick up whereas Clojure uses so much parenthesis and symbols everywhere that it ruins the readability for me. I think that Ruby and Python are beautiful, readable and elegant. They are easy to read even for someone who does not know the language inside out. However, Clojure is opaque to me and I feel like I must know every tiny detail about the language implementation in order to be able to understand any code. So please, enlighten me! What is so good about Clojure? What is the absolute minimum that I should know about the language in order to appreciate it?

  I just like to tell you what still is a Problem in Ubuntu 14.04 and should be solved for a nice experience of this distribution. Unfortunately I do not have any hints to tell you, because I am just a user and know not much about programming. Anyway, I hope it helps. 1) Intel open source Graphics issues (proprietary) -when attaching HDMI-cable the screen switches to the external monitor and it's fine, but there is no switching back unless restart with HDMI deattached -black screen appears for like 2 seconds as if I would change screen in the settings; frequency increases with intensity of driver use (i.e. videos or video games) 2) hotkeys (commonly recognised) -there is no possibility to adjust brightness with the hotkeys (Fn+F5 and Fn+F6) 3) touchscreen (commonly recognised) -the touchscreen is behaving like a mouse -configuring gestures for the multi touch screen seems to always end in disabling touch pad gestures 4) panel symbols -battery symbol has got a low accuracy while it determines accurately the energy left; only 5 steps of energy are shown by the symbol Thank you all for participating in the solution of these problems! • Do we ethically have the right to use the MAC Address for verification purposes?

  I am writing a program, or starting at the very beginning of it, and I am thinking of purchase verification systems as a final step. I will be catering to Macs, PCs, and possibly Linux if all is said and done. I will also be programming this for smartphones as well using C++ and Objective-C. (I am writing a blueprint before going head first into it) That being said, I am not asking for help on doing it yet, but what I’m looking for is a realistic measurement for what could be expected as a viable and ethical option for purchase verification systems. Apple through the Apple Store, and some other stores out there have their own "You bought it" check. I am looking to use a three prong verification system. Email/password 16 to 32 character serial number using alpha/numeric and symbols with Upper and lowercase variants. MAC Address. The first two are in my mind ok, but I have to ask on an ethical standpoint, is a MAC Address to lock the software to said hardware unethical, or is it smart? I understand if an Ethernet card changes if not part of the logic board, or if the logic board changes so does the MAC address, so if that changes it will have to be re-verified, but I have to ask with how everything is today... Is it ethical to actually use the MAC address as a validation key or no? Should I be forward with this kind of verification system or should I keep it hidden as a secret? Yes I know hackers and others will find ways of knowing what I am doing, but in reality this is why I am asking. I know no verification is foolproof, but making it so that its harder to break is something I've always been interested in, and learning how to program is bringing up these questions, because I don't want to assume one thing and find out it's not really accepted in the programming world as a "you shouldn't do that" maneuver... Thanks in advance... I know this is my first programming question, but I am just learning how to program, and I am just making sure I'm not breaking some ethical programmer credo I shouldn't...

• Is Ruby on Rails supposed to have a steep learning curve or is it just me?

  I'm a self-taught programmer. I've been learning RoR since October with varying intensity (sometimes all day, sometimes nothing for several weeks). Before that I knew only Java, but knew it pretty well. I've heard so much hype about RoR and how it's supposed to make you happy, productive, etc. So far it's only made me frustrated. I learned it out of the Agile book, and I suspect part of the difficulty might have to do with my not knowing JavaScript and CSS, and having only a shaky grasp of databases and HTML. But apparently it took me much longer to complete the project in the Agile book than other people, and I still don't remember much of it. There are some things about Rails that I just can't seem to get, e.g. when to use symbols and when NOT to, or how dynamic methods are called. Recently I was given a small Rails assignment where I'm asked to make a small change to the interface. It's taken me around 25 hours and although I've made some progress in understanding the code, I still have no idea how to proceed. I can't even ask Stack Overflow because there is so much code I'll have to provide to give context. So my question is in the title: is RoR supposed to take a long time to learn or am I just slow? Can it be that I've been learning from the wrong book? My learning style is such that I either understand nothing or understand everything, if that makes sense. Thanks!

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • How difficult is it for an artist to make their own artwork cohesive to another artists' style? [on hold]

  I have a lot of artwork I purchased from a website, but the artist who drew the game assets is unavailable. I need to create additional artwork which fits with this style, but I am not an artist- nor do I have any idea of how artists work. Obviously, the solution is to find a new artist, who I can pay to draw this artwork while keeping it to look at certain way. I am scared of wasting money though. I don't want to contract an artist, only to find out it is extremely difficult for someone to match another person's art style. I don't need it to be identical, I just need it to be cohesive. I also want to know what I'm asking of people, before I ask them. Artists are workers just like me, and deserve to be understood when contracted. As an artist, is it extra difficult or time consuming to alter your artwork to match a certain style? Does it require a lot of talent to make a cohesive piece of art? To be specific, I am talking about structures, such as 2D symbols of towns for a map. They all have this "gritty" penciling effect to them and lots of saturated colors, which is what will be required when I say "cohesive". Along with looking like the architecture belongs in the same world.

• How to read reduce/shift conflicts in LR(1) DFA?

  I am reading an explanation (awesome "Parsing Techniques" by D.Grune and C.J.H.Jacobs; p.293 in the 2nd edition) and I moved forward from my last question: How to get lookahead symbol when constructing LR(1) NFA for parser? Now I have such "problem" (maybe not a problem, but rather need of confirmation from some more knowledgeable people). The authors present state in LR(0) which has reduce/shift conflict. Then they build DFA for LR(1) for the same grammar. And now they say it does not have a conflict (lookaheads at the end): S -> E . eof E -> E . - T eof E -> E . - T - and there is an edge from this state labeled - but no labeled eof. Authors says, that on eof there will be reduce, on - there will be shift. However eof is for shift as well (as lookahead). So my personal understanding of LR(1) DFA is this -- you can drop lookaheads for shifts, because they serve no purpose now -- shifts rely on input, not on lookaheads -- and after that, remove duplicates. S -> E . eof E -> E . - T So the lookahead for reduce serves as input really, because at this stage (all required input is read) it is really incoming symbol right now. For shifts, the input symbols are on the edges. So my question is this -- am I actually right about dropping lookaheads for shifts (after fully constructing DFA)?

  I have a bunch of txt files in my D drive which are placed randomly in different locations.Some files also contain symbols.I want a batch file so that i can delete their specific lines completely at the same time without doing it one by one for each file and please refer to a code which does not create a new text file at some other location with the changes being incorporated i.e I do not want the input.txt and output.txt thing.I just need the original files to be replaced with the changes as soon as i click the batch file. e.g D:\abc\1.txt D:\xyz\2.txt etc I want both of their 3rd lines erased completely with a single click and the new file must be saved with the same name in the same location i.e the new changed text files must replace the old text files with their respective lines removed.Maybe some sort of *.txt thing i.e i should be able to change all the files with the .txt extensions in a drive via a single batch file perhaps in another drive,not placing my batch file into each and every folder separately and then running them.Alternatively a vbs file is also welcomed.
