  • Cache-control for permanent 301 redirects nginx

    I was wondering if there is a way to control lifetime of the redirects in Nginx? We would liek to cache 301 redirects in CDN for specific amount of time, let say 20 minutes and the CDN is controlled by the standard caching headers. By default there is no Cache-control or Expires directives with the Nginx redirect. That could cause the redirect to be cached for a really long time. By having specific redirect lifetime the system could have a chance to correct itself, knowing that even "permanent" redirect change from time to time.. The other thing is that those redirects are included from the Server block, which according the nginx specification should be evaluated before locations. I tried to add add_header Cache-Control "max-age=1200, public"; to the bottom of the redirects file, but the problem is that Cache-control gets added twice - first comes let say from the backend script and the other one added by the add_header directive.. In Apache there is the environment variable trick to control headers for rewrites: RewriteRule /taxonomy/term/(\d+)/feed /taxonomy/term/$1 [R=301,E=expire:1] Header always set Cache-Control "store, max-age=1200" env=expire But I'm not sure how to accomplish this in Nginx.

  • Client certificate based encryption

    I have a question about security of a file on a webserver. I have a file on my webserver which is used by my webapplication. It's a bitcoin wallet. Essentially it's a file with a private key in it used to decrypt messages. Now, my webapplication uses the file, because it's used to recieve transactions made trough the bitcoin network. I was looking into ways to secure it. Obviously if someone has root access to the server, he can do the same as my application. However, I need to find a way to encrypt it. I was thinking of something like this, but I have no clue if this is actually going to work: Client logs in with some sort of client certificate. Webapplication creates a wallet file. Webapplication encrypts file with client certificate. If the application wants to access the file, it has to use the client certificate. So basically, if someone gets root access to the site, they cannot access the wallet. Is this possible and does anyone know about an implementation of this? Are there any problems with this? And how safe would this be?

  • How to break the "php is a bad language" paradigm? [closed]

    PHP is not a bad language (or at least not as bad as some may suggest). I had teachers that didn't even know PHP was object oriented until I told them. I've had clients that immediately distrust us when we say we are PHP developers and question us for not using chic languages and frameworks such as Django or RoR, or "enterprise and solid" languages such as Java and ASP.NET. Facebook is built on PHP. There are plenty of solid projects that power the web like Joomla and Drupal that are used in the enterprise and governments. There are frameworks and libraries that have some of the best architectures I've seen across all languages (Symfony 2, Doctrine). PHP has the best documentation I've seen and a big community of professionals. PHP has advanced OO features such as reflection, interfaces, let alone that PHP now supports horizontal reuse natively and cleanly through traits. There are bad programmers and script kiddies that give PHP a bad reputation, but power the PHP community at the same time, and because it is so easy to get stuff done PHP you can often do things the wrong way, granted, but why blame the language?. Now, to boil this down to an actual answerable question: what would be a good and solid and short and sweet argument to avoid being frowned upon and stop prejudice in one fell swoop and defend your honor when you say you are a PHP developer?.   • VPN Client solution

    I have several VPN's that I need to establish on a daily basis but from multiple workstations. What I would like to do it have either a server or vpn router that can perform this connection itself and that I can then route traffic through this device or server depending on the subnet I am trying to reach. The issue is that I only use VPN Clients to connect, so I am basically trying to achieve almost a site to site VPN but by using basically a VPN Client type connection from my network. The main VPN Client I use is the Sonicwall Global VPN Client where I initially use a Preshared Key and then it always prompts me for a username and password (not RSA key). My question is, is there any type of linux distro or even a hardware vpn router that can do this and connect to a Sonicwall device as if it were a client? I have tried pfSense which is very good but it fails to connect, probably due to a mismatch of settings. I have tried many others. Even dd-wrt on my router but it does not support whatever protocol Sonicwall uses. (I thought L2TP/IPSec) but it appears it may not be that. Any advice would be great! The other other thing I have thought of that I have not tried yet is Windows Server Routing and Remote Access but I have a feeling that won't work either. Thanks

Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? Is Git a good fit for documentation revision control? I am NOT asking if a Revision Control System in general should or shouldn't be used for documentation - it should.   • Cannot access any remote resource after connecting to Cisco VPN on Vista

    I have installed Cisco vpn client version 5.0.07.0290 on Vista Business SP2. I am able to successfully connnect to the vpn. But after connecting I am not able to access any resource in the vpn (like database, other computers in the network etc.). I have tried the following without any success : Older versions of the client Other vpn clients like Shrewsoft : same issue as the cisco vpn client Disabled Internet Connection Sharing service Installed the client in the root administrator account Run the installer as administrator Run the vpngui and ipsecdialer in XP compatibility mode and as administrator I am not sure how to troubleshoot this issue. Can somebody please help me in troubleshooting this issue? P.S : I've Zonealarm firewall, can that be an issue?

  • FIX: A network error occurred during SQL Server Native Client installation

    One of the things that I have been pestering the SQL team to do is to name their updates according to what is contained in them. For example, instead of just: sqlncli.msi What I'd prefer is that the file was called something like: SQLServerNativeClient2k8SP1CU3x64.msi So I normally rename them as soon as I receive them, to avoid confusion in future.     On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?   • Acceptable placement of the composition root using dependency injection and inversion of control containers

    I've read in several sources including Mark Seemann's 'Ploeh' blog about how the appropriate placement of the composition root of an IoC container is as close as possible to the entry point of an application. In the .NET world, these applications seem to be commonly thought of as Web projects, WPF projects, console applications, things with a typical UI (read: not library projects). Is it really going against this sage advice to place the composition root at the entry point of a library project, when it represents the logical entry point of a group of library projects, and the client of a project group such as this is someone else's work, whose author can't or won't add the composition root to their project (a UI project or yet another library project, even)? I'm familiar with Ninject as an IoC container implementation, but I imagine many others work the same way in that they can scan for a module containing all the necessary binding configurations. This means I could put a binding module in its own library project to compile with my main library project's output, and if the client wanted to change the configuration (an unlikely scenario in my case), they could drop in a replacement dll to replace the library with the binding module. This seems to avoid the most common clients having to deal with dependency injection and composition roots at all, and would make for the cleanest API for the library project group. Yet this seems to fly in the face of conventional wisdom on the issue. Is it just that most of the advice out there makes the assumption that the developer has some coordination with the development of the UI project(s) as well, rather than my case, in which I'm just developing libraries for others to use?

    I'm using Unity 3D Let's say the player is an ice cube. You control it like a normal player. On press of a button, ice transforms (with animation) into water. You control it completely different than the ice cube. Another great example would be: Player is human being and has normal FPS controls. On press of a button human transforms into birds and now has completely different controls. Now, my question is, what would be easier and better: make one object with animation transition and to stay in that state of anim. until button is pressed again make two object: ice and water. Ice has an animation of turning into water. So replace ice (with animation) with water object And if anyone knows this one too: how to switch between 2 different types of player controls.

    sometimes the sound of videos isn't enough for me. so i reach the sound indicator , over sound preferences and change it to a level higher than 100%. the question is how can i do it from the keyboard? now i can control the volume from the keyboard but it's maximum is 100%. is there a way to do that? EDIT 1: how to use amixer to do it? (as Lyrositor suggested) EDIT2: the closest answer , as Jo-erland, suggested is to set a hotkey to bring up the gnome-volume-control, and then to use left and right arrows to change volume also beyond the 100% mark. any other suggestions, to make this 1 step only? is it possible to set a hotkey to do a sequence of commands ?

How should I be debugging this?
