  While trying to come-up with a servlet based application to read files and manipulate them (image type conversion) here is a question that came up to me: Is it possible to inspect a file content and know the filetype? Is there a standard that specifies that each file MUST provide some type of marker in their content so that the application will not have to rely on the file extension constraints? Consider an application scenario: I am creating an application that will be able to convert different file formats to a set of output formats. Say user uploads an PDF, my application can suggest that the possible conversion formats are microsoft word or TIFF or JPEG etc. As my application will gradually support different file formats (over a period of time), I want my application to inspect the input file instead of having the user to specify the format. And suggest to user the possible formats of output. I understand this is an open ended, broad question. Please let me know if it needs to be modified. Thanks, Ayusman

  Hi, I'm writing an extension method called ToPhoneFormat that formats a string of digits to phone numbers. Is it possible to add a parameter to the method that would enable me to call it like this: MyPhoneString.ToPhoneFormat(international code) That way, I could write MyPhoneString.ToPhoneFormat(1); to format a US phone number and MyPhoneString.ToPhoneFormat(33) to format a French phone number. I already wrote the method that does the formatting but I'm wondering how to build the constructor so that it works with a parameter when I'm calling it. Thanks.

• Moving and renaming files, keeping extension but include sub directories in batch file

  Forgive me if this is nor the place to ask these questions, I am new to batch and scripts and a bit new to these kind of posts... I have a folder that will receive files and folders, I want to run a script that looks at the directory and renames all files in each subfolder numerically, and moves them if possible. For example I have something that looks like the following Recieved_File_Folder |_folder1 | |_file1.txt | |_file2.bmp |_folder2 | |_file4.exe | |_file5.bmp |__file9.txt |__file10.jpg I would like to be able to look in every directory and move it to something like this, keeping in mind the names of the files will be random and I want to keep the extension intact also. Renamed_Folder |_folder1 | |_1.txt | |_2.bmp |_folder2 | |_1.exe | |_2.bmp |__1.txt |__2.jpg I have spent alot of time on this and am not doing too well with it, any help would be very greatly appreciated!!   I've looked on SO and it seems that most people have been recomending books as the best iphone development resource due to the lack of resources on the web. I've seen the book the The Pragmatic Programmer: iPhone SDK development been recomended a few times. I'm planning to go buy a couple of books. Which should I go for? Please give reason :) A bit of background : I have a strong background in C and I've played around with Cocoa so something iphone specific would be best ( but I'm open for suggestions ;)) Update I'm not looking for simple listings of iphone SDK related books, I can google that ;) I want books that people are reading/have read and would recomend :) Final Update I just ordered my copy of Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK. My main reasons on chosing it are that it's already in print (unlike the pragmatic one) and I looked at the preview on their website and I liked it.

• Directory layout for a Python project with C extension modules

  We have numerous projects in our organization that are mixed Python/C. Currently we're trying to standardize on a directory layout for our projects and are trying to come up with a convenient scheme. One point of contention is where to put C extension modules in the tree. We're tossing around a couple of options (relative to project root): ./src/package/subpackage/module.c or alongside the python modules in the package tree: ./package/subpackage/module.c or in a src directory in the subpackage: ./package/subpackage/src/module.c One reason for keeping them out of the package directories could be because it will lead to clutter, especially if there are other .c and .h files which aren't themselves modules but still need to be compiled. Also in the "integrated" scheme, what do you do with headers and files that are used by more than one module? Put them in a common top-level directory? I'd be interested to know what other people are using, or if there are any established best practices for this.

  I am new to Firefox Extension Development and doing my 1st program. Simply I needed to pop up a alert once it loaded the page. Then I found about "#document" and then I added a IF condition: onPageLoad: function(aEvent) { if (aEvent.originalTarget.nodeName == '#document') { alert("Loaded"); } } Unfortunately still I am getting the same.   I am looking for TDD resources that are specific to Rails. I've seen the Rails Guide: The Basics of Creating a Rails Plugin which really spurred my interest in the topic. I have the Agile Development with Rails book and I see there's some testing-related information there. However, it seems like the author takes you through the steps of building the app, then adds testing afterward. This isn't really Test Driven Development. Ideally, I'd like a book on this, but a collection of other tutorials or articles would be great if such a book doesn't exist. Things I'd like to learn: Primary goal: Best Practices Unit testing How to utilize Fixtures Possibly using existing development data in place of fixtures What's the community standard here?   unsigned short s; s = 0xffff; int i = s; How does the extension work here? 2 larger order bytes are added, but I'm confused whether 1's or 0's are extended there. This is probably platform dependent so let's focus on what Unix does. Would the two bigger order bytes of the int be filled with 1's or 0's, and why? Basically, does the computer know that s is unsigned, and correctly assign 0's to the higher order bits of the int? So i is now 0x0000ffff? Or since ints are default signed in unix does it take the signed bit from s (a 1) and copy that to the higher order bytes?

• Should we develop code on a local machine in a VLAN?

  Because of security reasons, we will not be able to use IIS on our local machines. I'm sure that many of you have faced the same problem, so how did you solve it? Here are the options that we're looking at: Create a VLAN that is isolated from the network for development. This will allow us to use any software, including IIS, that we want. A disadvantage is testing Web services with external organizations, which can be overcome by using stubs. Not use a VLAN and use only the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio, and then deploying that code to the development server. This has the disadvantage of not being able to replicate the production environment during local development. In addition, at least one developer needs IIS for GIS development, so he couldn't develop locally. Thank you for comments or suggestions that you may have!

  Hi, I need to implement a HtmlHelper extension in my MVC project simply just to output some string but ONLY in the DEBUG mode, not in REALEASE. My first attempt would be: [Conditional("DEBUG")] public static string TestStringForDebugOnly(this HtmlHelper helper, string testString) { return testString; } But obviously that would give a compile error: "The Conditional attribute is not valid because its return type is not void." So my understanding is once you set [Condition] attribute, it doesnt allow to return anything? why? What is other way to implement this kind of function? anyone help would be much appreciated.   I found this question somewhat on the topic, but is there a way [in emacs] to set a minor mode (or a list thereof) based on extension? For example, it's pretty easy to find out that major modes can be manipulated like so (setq auto-mode-alist (cons '("\\.notes$" . text-mode) auto-mode-alist)) and what I'd ideally like to be able to do is (setq auto-minor-mode-alist (cons '("\\.notes$" . auto-fill-mode) auto-minor-mode-alist)) The accept answer of the linked question mentions hooks, specifically temp-buffer-setup-hook. To use this, you have to add a function to the hook like so (add-hook 'temp-buffer-setup-hook 'my-func-to-set-minor-mode) My question is two-fold: Is there an easier way to do this, similar to major modes? If not, how would one write the function for the hook? It needs to check the file path against a regular expression. If it matches, activate the desired mode (e.g. auto-fill-mode).

• Downloading image from server without file extension (NSData to UIImage)

  From my server I'm pulling down a url that is supposed to simply be a profile image. The relevant code for pulling down the image from the urls is this: NSString *urlString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@%@",kBaseURL,profile_image_url]; profilePic = [UIImage imageWithData:[NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:urlString]]]; My url is in the format (note no file extension on the end since its dynamically rendered) localhost:8000/people/1/profile_image If I load the url in my browser the image displays; however the code above for pulling down the UIImage does not work. I've verified that the code does pull an image from a random site on the interwebs. Any thoughts on why this is happening?

  6.4.2 Is there separation of duties between personnel assigned to the development/test environments and those assigned to the production environment? What does the separation of duties here mean? Is it in the sense of http://www.sans.edu/research/security-laboratory/article/it-separation-duties or something else? The formulation "between test and production environment" is really confusing me, it looks like they mean that one should have different sysadmins for test and production? Or do they just mean that developers shouldn't have access to production? thanks.

  I have been trying a lot (but not smartly) to figure out setting up VIM, ctags, omnicomple for PHP development. On Googling I found this file. But have no clue how to use it. What have I done until now? Here it is: I am on Fedora 17 64-bit OS Logged in as root Found my VIM version to be VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled May 8 2012 15:05:51) Followed the install details as here http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=3171 install details Place in $HOME/.vim/autoload/phpcomplete.vim and enable the php ftplugin What else I am missing? How do I start using omnicomplete. (this is the first time I am using omnicomplete) Why didn't I try IDE's? I have a single core machine running LAMP stack. Didn't wanted to slow down everything and hence sticking to command line environment.

• Creating cookieless application on development machine with asp.net

  I am thinking about setting up a new domain to host static content on my website and have it cookieless just like Stackoverflow with their static domain. So before going ahead and buying the domain and setting it up I wanted to test it on my developement machine first under localhost (I have to mention that i am planning on having IIS running on my new domain for the static files). I therefore created a new application under IIS and disabled session state and forms authentication. When my main application needs resources like css, images and js , I use the path to the "static" application where they are hosted. The problem is that when I look at the request and the response for the requested files, they still have the session_id cookie defined as well as the asp.net authentication cookie. Is it at all possible to accomplish what i am trying to do on a development machine or do i have to just go ahead and purchase the new domain which hopefully with make things right? I tried to read about cookieless domain but can't figure out what i might be missing.

• Best linux distro for cuda development

  Can someone suggest the best linux distro for CUDA development. The reason why I'm asking is that I tried installing the latest cuda SDK in Fedora 12, and it was a real pain in the neck. It took me 8 hours to get the nouveau driver removed and the nvidia-driver installed. After that somehow the OS decides to act up and blow up the /var/log/message file to 9 GB and eat up all my remaining space, with strange errors. I don't even understand what happened further, but my Nvidia drives don't work anymore. Please don't flame me, I'm NOT a windows fanboy or anything. I've been using Linux since 2002, and actually like it. Its just my personal experience. Would be really helpful for positive suggestions. Fanboys, please stay aside. Thanks in advance.

• Creating a filesystem on a file in linux for software development purposes

  This question originally start at Superuser.com http://superuser.com/questions/130032/available-filesystems-for-linux-that-are-case-insensitive Summary: My client has a PHP web application that was written and is served from a Windows environments. Unfortunately the past developer didn't obey naming conventions so file includes are of the form "/file/At/SomethingHere.php" when on disk the path is actually "/File/at/Somethinghere.php". I do not want to use Windows for development but the filesystems I use (ext2, ext3 ) are case sensitive. I think the solution will be to create a filesystem like FAT 32 or similar, but I am somewhat clueless how to accomplish that. Starting to read up on DD and fdisk to figure out if those are the correct tools I will need.
