• IMetadataExchange endpoint purpose

  What is the purpose of IMetadataExchange endpoint. Some places i found that if i dont define this endpoint, adding service reference will not work OR creating proxy using svcutil wont work. But both of this working without having IMetadataExchange defined. If we have other endpoint with httpGetEnabled = true, we are able to create proxy from client. Also, some article says that we should delete IMetadataExchange before moving code to production and it should development period only so that other client cant see metadata. Doesnt this stop the behaviour of service having self describing itself? And if I have defined this IMetadataExchange endpoint, how can i see that on browser. Address whoch i have provided for this endpoint is not pulling any metadata in browser.

• What do I return if the return type of a method is Void? (Not void!)

  Due to the use of Generics in Java I ended up in having to implement a function having Void as return type: public Void doSomething() { //... } and the compiler demands that I return something. For now I'm just returning null, but I'm wondering if that is good coding practice... I've also tried Void.class, void, Void.TYPE, new Void(), no return at all, but all that doesn't work at all. (For more or less obvious reasons) (See this answer for details) So what am I supposed to return if the return type of a function is Void? What's the general use of the Void class? EDIT: Just to spare you the downvotes: I'm asking about V?oid, not v?oid. The class Void, not the reserved keyword void.

• How to handle User "confirmation" with Watir/Cucumber?

  I'm new to Watir and I've having a little trouble getting logged in in my tests. I use authlogic as my authentication method of choice. When a User registers, they are sent an email with a confirmation link. Clicking this link confirms their account and they can then login. The issue I'm having is how do I confirm the User when using Watir? • .NET Code Access Security: Useful or just overcomplicated?

  see also Is “Code Access Security” of any real world use? I want to get some other opinions on this... I like the idea of Code Access Security for desktop applications. But in the lifetime of .NET I have to admit I've never actually had a situation where CAS has actually blocked something to my benefit. I have, however, had many times where something as simple as sharing a quick .NET application across a mapped drive becomes an enterprise code access nightmare. Having to break out caspol.exe to create trusted path rules and having no clear way of knowing why something failed makes it seem like CAS adds way more frustration to the development and deployment process than it offers in security. I'd like to hear either some situations where CAS has actually helped more than hurt, or if there are other people out there frustrated with its current implementation and defaults.

• viewDidAppear called when popping navigationController

  I'm having a bit of a problem with the viewDidAppear: method. I have a tabBarController with navigationControllers on each tab, and I have an action that requires that all the navigation controllers pop to their rootViewControllers (programmatically). The problem is that when they pop each navigation controller, the rootViewController's viewDidAppear get's called without it actually being shown. This causes them to do some stuff they were not supposed to (like showing alerts) unless they are actually shown. Besides having to check the currently selected tabBar item, is there any other way to solve this? Thanks.

• Bash Shell; read command; using Cygwin on Windows 7

  Okay so I am having this problem. I write up a script to be run in cygwin on Windows. I've tried a bunch of basic example scripts in case it was my scripts problem. So I tried this: #!/bin/bash echo -e "Enter your name and press [ENTER]: \c" read var_name echo "Your name is: $var_name" Then I will run it and I enter a name for var_name. I get this: $ ./project1.sh Enter your name and press [ENTER]: Jake ': not a valid identifierad: `var_name Your name is: So as far as I understand it I am having a problem with read. I am trying to work on a project for my class, but I can't seem to figure out why it won't read it. I followed the book with no triumph then resorted to these examples on the web that do not seem to work for me either. Does anyone have any idea if it is my setup or if I am missing something, thanks.

  What is the best open source library for performing boolean operations (union, intersect, subtract) on shapefiles? What do you like to use? OGR looks like it probably has this capability, though I'm having trouble finding the particular commands in their documentation. Shapely definitely does this, and is easy to understand. PostGIS appears to also have some commands for this. But there must be more, and I'm having trouble finding them. I don't have much experience with any of the, and would appreciate any opinions on these or other libraries. Thanks!

• PHP + MYSQL site perfomance

  I have to manage a site which wasn't developed by me. It is in PHP using a mysql database, which is located in the web server. The site, sometimes (when the visitors increase too much) stops responding, or respond too slow. I have developed some sites in PHP but never took care of the management so really don't know where to start. The server (the hard) seems to be fine, when the web stops responding the cpu is being used at about 55% and has a lot of memory. I'm not asking someone to solve this issue. I only would really like if someone could give me a few tips about where can I find logs and how should I read and interpret them. So, that way I would be able to know if its the net traffic, the database (which queries), or what. Thanks! Update: Forgot to say: it is a Windows Server 2003. Note: I've recorded about a day with Jet Profiler. I don't really understand all the information it provides but there is one query which it marks as really slow. It makes sense because it is a select with a where clause which has three like condition. Initially I didn't include this in my question because when I run the query from MySQL Query Browser it doesn't take any long. It is under 0.01 seconds.

• Routing Users to single Models with Rails

  I'm creating a Rails app for students and high schools and I'm having some trouble with my User.rb. I want to have a user model to be used for logging in, but having that user have many roles. The tricky part is that I want users that have a student role to have_one student page, and those that have a role of principal to have_one high_school page. The students and also nested in the high_school so the entire thing becomes a big mess. So my question(s): How do I limit a user to only creating one student / high school to represent them? Also how would I nest this student pages inside the highschool without screwing up the user system? My environment: Rails3 and Ruby 1.9.2dev Thank you!

• Cannot enter input with gdb. Help!

  Hi, all. I've been having a tough time entering input with gdb using XCode or Eclipse. Every time the debugger hits std::cin, it looks like its waiting for input, but fails to accept it. I've scoured the internet for more information, but am having trouble finding anything. What do I need to do to get cin to work with gdb? For reference, I'm using XCode 3.2.2 and Eclipse Galileo. • How to retrive only one cell from MySQL table with PHP

  I'm trying to create a forgotten password form that emails users their password. I'm having a problem, though, with the actual password part. You see, I have the email and comparing the email correct, except whenever I send the email I always get either "Your password is ." or "Your password is Array". I'm using: $check_email = mysql_num_rows(mysql_query("SELECT email FROM userRecovery WHERE email = '$to'")); if($check_email == 1){ $qtip = mysql_query("SELECT password FROM userRecovery WHERE email = '$to'"); $theirPassword = mysql_fetch_array($qtip); Rest of the Code... } I used to be able to do this correctly, but I haven't done PHP or MySQL in too long so it's slightly annoying (that, and I'm at a beginner-intermediate kind of level). I remember having this exact problem, but I don't have the code with me to find out what I did. If you think I left out a detail, please say so. Any help if appreciated.

• What is the delegate method that is called when an MKPinAnnotationView is touched?

  I have been searching for this all night and I have just so frustrated. When a MKPinAnnotationView is clicked, the name and the subtitle comes up. I also want to center that point on the view. I figured there was some method I had to override because the information that pops up happened without me having to code it. Hopefully this was clear enough for you all. And in the mean time, I feel like there is some hidden guide on this use of MKMaps and other classes.   Basically i want to create XMLDesigner kind of thing in Flex, using which user can add/edit components and properties of view/dashboard. i am storing view structure in a xml file. i parsed that file at runtime and display view. • How to test COM object integrity automatically?

  Every COM object must have integrity. In simplified terms this means that if an object implements 3 interfaces - A, B and C and I have A* pointer to the object I must be able to successfully QueryInterface() both B and C and having B I must be able to retrieve A and C and having C I must be able to retrieve A and B. Now my object implements 5 interfaces and I want to test its integrity. Writing checks for all of the above myself will require a substantial effort. Is there a tool or some easily tweakable code or a code pattern that would do it?

  Hi all, I'm trying to understand how to train a multilayer, however, I'm having some trouble figuring out on choosing the amount of neurons in my network. For a specific task, I have four input sources that can each input one of three states. I guess that would mean four input neurons firing either 0, 1 or 2, but as far as I'm told, input should be kept binary? I am having a hard time to understand how I can save the authors in view function? I am thinking of using a hidden field to record all the author id's but I am having a hard time figuring out how to save it on the postback.

Having been independant/freelance for 5 years or so, and having also had plenty of exposure to perm positions, I've been exposed to many views on what an "Architect" really is. As a result, I've coined the term, "One man's architect is another man's n00b", as it seems to be perpetually relative. I've interviewed at mom-&-pop shops that didn't think I was worth a hill of beans. I've also interviewed at world-class consulting firms who thought I was incredible. Again, it all seems relative. But what specifically makes a software architect a true "Architect"?

• Java JEditorPane Format

  im trying to implement a Chat feature in my application. i have used 2 JEditorPane. one for holding chat history and the other for sending chat to the previous JEditorPane. the JEditorPane is text/html type. the problem i am having is when i put more than one space between characters it is automatically removed by the parser because it is HTML! how can i make it so, that the spaces are not stripped? example: hello world becomes: hello world. also i am having to parse the html tags so the new messages can be added to the history window. is there a better option than using JEditorPane? if i used JTextPane would it be easier to implement? i would like the chat boxes/panes to be able to handle bold, URL embedding for now. thank you and look forward to your guidance.

  I have a window having multiple tabs. Each tab having different grids. I want to save all changes on any tab on any grid in bulk. I mean I have one save button which will save all changes in any grid on any tab. I think DataTables will work fine here. Can you suggest me that it is good to use DataTables to ADD/Edit data and save data in bulk using these DataTables OR is there any better way to achieve this. My DAL is generated from LLBLGen Pro (ORM) but you are open to suggest me a solution. Thanks. • Finding new IP in a file

  Hello. I have a file of IP addresses called "IPs". When I parse a new IP from my logs, I'd like to see if the new IP is already in file IPs, before I add it. I know how to add the new IP to the file, but I'm having trouble seeing if the new IP is already in the file. !/usr/bin/python from IPy import IP IP = IP('192.168.1.2') f=open(IP('IPs', 'r')) #This line doesn't work f=open('IPs', 'r') # this one doesn't work for line in f: if IP == line: print "Found " +IP +" before" f.close() In the file "IPs", each IP address is on it's own line. • Handling hundreds of actions in Struts2

  Hi all, I've inherited a struts 1 web application where, in order to reduce the number of Action classes (I guess this is the reason), lots of actions are mapped inside a single Action class, like: public XXXAction() throws Exception{ actions = new Hashtable(); actions.put("/XXX/main/load", new Integer(0)); actions.put("/XXX/main/save", new Integer(1)); ...... } public ActionForward executeAction(ActionMapping mapping, ActionForm form, HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res) throws IOException, ServletException { try { switch (((Integer) actions.get(action)).intValue()) { case 0: loadXXXMain(); break; case 1: ....... and so on (in some Action classes I have almost one hundred of these small actions). Now I'm looking at migrate to struts2 and I would like to have a cleaner and better solution to handle this, maybe without having a single Action class for each of these small classes. What do you suggest? I don't like this solution, but I don't like having hundreds of Action classes.... Thanks! Roberto

• Can a ScatterViewItem dynamically resize to fit its content?

  We're hosting a control inside of a ScatterViewItem that dynamically changes its size at runtime as a result of having various sub-elements added, removed, and/or collapsed. We would like to have the hosting ScatterViewItem resize as well to properly fit its child controls, but we're having a hard time making this happen. We've tried a number of different things and the closest we've come is hooking into the child control's SizeChanged event and explicitly setting the ScatterViewItem's Width and Height, but this approach still has issues. When you define a ScatterViewItem and its content in XAML, the ScatterViewItem is sized appropriately. We would like to force the same behavior at runtime when its content changes size. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  I am having a problem with GameQuery (jQuery) collision detection Tthey just never seem to fire?!? I have checked all the .arrow's exist and the same for the .bot's but it just never seems to call the function I have the below code in my main callback: $(".bot").each(function(){ $(this).collision(".arrow").each(function(){ alert("Test"); }); }); Do you have any idea why this would just simply be doing nothing?
