  I have HP Pavilion dv7 BeatsAudo model: dv7-6b with following specifications: CPU: Intel i7-2670QM ( Quad Core ) 8 CPU's @ 2.2Ghz RAM: 8GB @ 1066 GPU: ATI Radeon HD 6770M 1GB Notebook has two slots: HDMI and VGA On my VGA i have an external monitor 24" Samsung, any idea if my notebook could support a second external monitor as well. I do a lot of development work, i havent got a second monitor to test it yes but i know there can be problems. I would like to have a monitor connected on my VGA and on my HDMI so two external monitors and notebooks monitor. Would this be viable ?

• Windows 7 RC sleep on Thinkpad R51?

  I have an old Thinkpad R51 and Windows 7 just doesn't give me a Sleep option. I suspect it's because it's running the default VGA driver. The machine has an Intel 855 GME graphics adapter but there doesn't seem to be a WDDM driver available publicly. Lenovo's driver download page just says that drivers for Vista are bundled with the OS. Apparently, they aren't bundled with Windows 7 as it always defaults to a generic VGA driver. Is there a reliable way to get Sleep to work on this machine?

• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • Asus laptop not retaining Aero theme when unplugged

  The problem i'm having occurs when i unplug my laptop, it disregards several elements of my theme. The taskbar becomes unlocked. My desktop background is turned white. The transparency on my windows goes away. I can fix these things by running the Aero trouble shooting utility, which mentions something about the color bit depth These are these specs for the computer: Asus Laptop / Intel® Pentium® Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory Model: X54H-BD3MA SKU: 4005394 I'm sure there are duplicates of this, just not sure whick one refers to me. • Is it safe to use consumer MLC SSDs in a server?

  We (and by we I mean Jeff) are looking into the possibility of using Consumer MLC SSD disks in our backup data center. We want to try to keep costs down and usable space up - so the Intel X25-E's are pretty much out at about 700$ each and 64GB of capacity. What we are thinking of doing is to buy some of the lower end SSD's that offer more capacity at a lower price point. My boss doesn't think spending about 5k for disks in servers running out of the backup data center is worth the investment. Just how dangerous of an approach is this and what can be done to mitigate these dangers?

• Why doesn't my computer work at full speed?

  My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8I915PL-G with an Intel Pentium 4 630 3,0 GHz which doesn't run at it's default speed. It's currently at FSB 800, CPU Host 200 and CPU 3000 MHz; but sometimes it runs at FSB 533, CPU Host 133 and CPU 2025 MHz. Sometimes it's even at FSB 75 and CPU 1128 MHz. When I configure the default settings in Easy Tune then my computer doesn't work. Sometimes I need to clear the CMOS so I can set the default settings in the BIOS, but that doesn't always help. I've updated the BIOS, what else can I do to fix this problem?

• Notebook with NVIDIA Optimus not switching video card in games

  I have a Samsung RC720 notebook with Intel Integrated Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M. As you can see it has two video adapters and Optimus is supposed to switch between them. But when I choose dedicated GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel and try to run, for example, GTA IV, it uses integrated graphics and I get very poor performance. I have already installed last NVIDIA and notebook drivers, chose high-performance in NVIDIA Control Panel, tried to execute with "Run with graphics processor..." context option and so on. • Is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card Compatbile with a Mac Pro Running Windows 7 Pro 64?

  I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) and I'm running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) natively (i.e., with just Windows installed and no OSX or boot camp) on it. If I buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 video card, will it work or do I have to buy a card that is Mac-specific (e.g., GeForce GTX 285 'for Mac')? Also, more generally, will Windows video cards work on Intel Macs running Windows (in case I pick a cheaper card)? I can't tell if it matters that a Mac does not have a bios. I searched other boards and I gathered that video cards would work fine because Windows has the proper drivers for them and OSX doesn't and not having the BIOS doesn't make a difference. I found one thread on here that seemed to indicate that as well, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

  My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one? • Long wait until POST...

  Here are the specs to put things into context: ECS P4VXASD2+ (V5.0) motherboard Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (512 KB L2, 533 MHz FSB) 2x 512 MB PC2100 DDR266 RAM 128 MB NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 AGP WD Caviar SE 80 GB IDE HDD Gigabyte CD-RW drive OKIA 300W ATX PSU So, everytime I try to boot up this computer, it takes at least 10-15 seconds before it will POST. All my other machines will post within 1-2 seconds, but this one takes a particularly long time. I've read suggestions from a Google search to swap the CMOS battery, check BIOS settings, and double check CMOS jumper. Still after follow those, it takes a while to POST. What else could be causing a long delay before POSTing?

• Virtualbox and getting the Locked VT-x Error when trying to use more than 1 processor on the session

  I have installed the latest version of virtualbox onto my Hewlett Pakard (h8-1170uk) I have a intel i7 2600 cpu and 8 gb of ram I can get virtual box to create several sessions of different operating systems at the same time, but whenever i try to get 1 session to open up using more than 1 processor option select ( i wanted one of my session access to 2 processors ) i keep getting this error message VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have search many times and cannot find a option to correct this. I have check my BIOS and there are no options about VT-x or Virtualisation or anything. Am i doing something wrong ? Why does Virtualbox run fine when just using the 1 processor option ?

  my sister is using Acer laptop, that has an intel WLAN card and supports windows hosted network(checked in command prompt).Am using the basic way using netsh wlan command also, then am using netsh start wlan command.The hosted network gets created and it could b seen in "Network and Sharing Center" as the . I also went to Device manager, selected WLan card, made sure"allow this device to wake computer from sleep" is selected. Now I went to the newly created , clicked properties, and under sharing enabled allow this to be shared(but I am not able to select The name of the wifi my sis wants to share (in this case her college wifi name, LEts say QP4,Ethernet and Local Area connection are the only two option that are coming). Also the SSID name is not being shown in her mobile nor when I click the tower icon at the tray area,Any suggestions on what might be going wrong?She is using windows 8. Should I look for updated drivers? Her laptop is only 6 months old, i don't think the drivers are outdated. Any advice shall be appreciated.

  So, I have a dual monitor setup. HDMI comes in through Nvidia, main display is through Intel (I think). I want to use XMonad with the dual setup, and I want to be able to run with or without the second monitor. Is this even doable? I'm using RandR 1.4 and can get both monitors to display something at the same time (by messing with xrandr) but XMonad can never detect more than one rectangle form Xinerama. Does anyone have a working multi-monitor xinerama or twinview configuration that works with optimus/randr 1.4?

• How to force 640*480@60Hz screen resolution on xubuntu 12.04

  It seems xubuntu won't be able to correctly set resolution at 640*480@60Hz at its Display settings. And I am unable to correctly my super small 6.4 inch Mitsubishi VGA panel via VGA cable. I have tried to hack both X11 conf /etc/X11/Xorg.conf and xfce4 conf, but all the document I can find is outdated. and conf files are changed into other location. Can someone give me a hand and I'll mark correct for other people to use? Thanks! EDIT: The board is an Intel Atom D2700, gpu is SGX545. I tried to use xrandr --output default --mode 640*480 It seems works fine, but refresh rate is 75Hz, but the screen only suports 60Hz So I used xrandr --output default --mode 640*480 --rate 60 but it give error: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Can anyone pointing any directions?

• Trouble with external monitor under Windows 7 on MacBook Pro Boot Camp

  I'm running Windows 7 32-bit on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core i5 under Boot Camp. I've had trouble getting it to work with my second display and searching Google for an appropriate answer has failed me. I'm on the latest version of Boot Camp - 3.2 - and have updated the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. The monitor is connected via a VGA cable, and is a Dell ST2410. The monitor is recognised by Windows, which knows it's a Dell and its resolution. The desktop should be extended onto the second monitor - however nothing is showing. It remains black, though it doesn't show a lack of signal coming through which I would have expected. Any ideas what's wrong?

• why is 64 bits version called AMD64 and 32 bits version called i386?

  I have never understood this. This is what i know: 64 bits OS if you want to handle more than 2GB RAM. Else, 32 bits OS. So on Ubuntu's homepage you can download either 64 bits or 32 bits. But the 64 bits is called amd64 and the 32 bits is called i386. So i have to have a AMD processor to run amd64? And intel to run i386? And if someone codes a software (lets say Apache). Does he have to code one 32 bits and one 64 bits? Do some softwares only exist for 32 and not 64 and vice versa? Thanks in advance!

• print job doesn't go to print queue

  I have two printers hooked up to my intel imac. I am having a printing error. It seems that whenever i try to print (a simple text doc) I am unable to get the print job to go to print queue with one of my printers. I have a HP c7280 and a HP c3100. I am able to get one working properly, but the other doesn't seem to allow it to go to the print queue. I have switched usb cables (with the printer that I know works) and both printers are recognized by the computer in the printer preferences pane. I've tried reseting the printer system in the printer setup utility.. reloaded the drivers from HP.. etc. If anyone has a suggestion or could point me to a little help i'd be VERY grateful Best Regards.. • Can I run Linux on the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless, with a built-in 3G modem, and connect using the built in modem?

  I apologize if my question made little sense, I am very tired at the moment. Anyway, Recently I purchases the HP Mini from Verizon Wireless. It runs on the Intel Atom processor and came with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is quite possibly the worst and most restrictive OS I have ever used. I plan on installing CRUX, after doing a little research on minimal, free, Linux operating systems, as I am working on web programming using Python, among other things. My only worry is that, because my HP Mini uses a built in wireless card (and I have no wifi connection, only a 3G connection) that has a "mobile access" connection to Verizon wireless, I am not sure if after installing CRUX that I would still be able to connect using this option. I have never used Linux before, and am hoping this will work. So if anybody has experience with this...please answer, can I connect to vzw 3G with linux, using an internal mobile access card...

• Macbook superdrive got calibration problems

  I have an intel macbook dual 2Ghz, bought about three years ago. I've had some problems with the superdrive and changed it a year and a half ago. the drive is Matshita DVD-R UJ 857 now I'm into burning cd's again and try to burn a DVD with Toast Titanium from an .iso on my hard drive But it won't work. When I launch the burn, the disc suddenly stops turning, and an error log pops: medium error, sense code = 0x73, 0x03 then I try with the built in cd burner of the macbook as soon as I click burn, the cd stops turning in the drive, and error log says peripheral couldn't calibrate power of the laser required for medium so since I'm not that logical of a geek, I try my first idea: let's see with other brands of DVD! the problem is that it works, now. but I'd like for all of my medium to be usable, and I've already seen my ridata DVD being burn, so here's the question. What the hell is happening with my superdrive? :)

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • VMware + SQL Server - sqlserver.exe not using both CPU cores

  Hi, I am working on a virtual machine that runs SQL Server Express (as part of Sage Line 50 Manufacturing). The details are as follows: Physical Server (host machine) - Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.1GHz - 4GB RAM - VMDK image stored on RAID-5 500GB SATA drives (7200RPM) - Running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit - VMware Server 2 Virtual Machine - Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Allocated 2 vCPU's and 2GB RAM - Using 100GB pre-allocated flat VMDK file The problem I have is that there is process that runs in SQL Server that is CPU intensive. On the old physical server that we migrated to the virtual machine from, this would utilise both CPU cores so the sqlserver.exe process would be running 100% on each of the CPU cores. On the virtual machine, it only seems to use one of the two CPU cores, meaning that the process is much slower to run. Question Is there a way to force SQL Server (sqlserver.exe process) to use both of the CPU cores, and distribute it's load between them? Is this a VMware setting that needs changing to allow processes to use both cores?

• High load on a nagios server -- How many service checks for a nagios server is too many?

  I have a nagios server running Ubuntu with a 2.0 GHz Intel Processor, a RAID10 array, and 400 MB of RAM. It monitors a total of 42 services across 8 hosts, most of which are checked using the check_http plugin even 5 minutes, some every minute. Recently the load on the nagios server has been above 4, often as high as 6. The server also runs cacti, gathering statistics every minute for 6 hosts. I wonder, how many services should hardware like this be able to handle? Is the load so high because I am pushing the limits of the hardware, or should this hardware be able to handle 42 service checks plus cacti? If the hardware is inadequate, should I look to add more RAM, more cores, or faster cores? What hardware / service checks are others running?

• No display but video card fans spins

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • Centos 6 - How to upgrade module located inside initramfs?

  We have recently upgraded our e1000e (intel ethernet) module on one of our centos 6.0 boxes. Even tho the module compile and installed fine, the old version is still being used. We have tracked this down to the fact that the e1000e.ko module is located inside the initamfs file for the booting kernel and thus, even tho the module located in /lib/modules/.... was being updated, the old one is still being loaded from inside the initramfs file. After some research, we have found that creating a new initamfs file in centos should be as simple as: /sbin/dracut <initramfs> <kernel-version> Can someone confirm that this is a safe way to basically recreate the initamfs file? This is a non-locally hosted (1000's of km away...) box, and getting support to resolve this if a reboot is unsuccessful will lead to quite a bit of down time. Thanks.
