  • MySQL - Calculate the net time difference between two date-times while excluding breaks?

    - by John M
    In a MySQL query I am using the timediff/time_to_sec functions to calculate the total minutes between two date-times. For example: 2010-03-23 10:00:00 - 2010-03-23 08:00:00 = 120 minutes What I would like to do is exclude any breaks that occur during the selected time range. For example: 2010-03-23 10:00:00 - 2010-03-23 08:00:00 - (break 08:55:00 to 09:10:00) = 105 minutes Is there a good method to do this without resorting to a long list of nested IF statements?

  • Write a dll that is accessable from VS 2003 VC++ code

    - by John
    I need to be able to write a DLL in either C# or VC++ that is accessible from code that is written in Visual Studio 2003 VC++. It looks like the code is unmanaged (uses * for pointers) VC++ and this DLL needs to be able to drop right in and be accessed by the current code. The DLL is an RS232 driver that needs to be able to return an int for an error code and pass back, by reference, some measured values, to the calling program. Will I even be able to write this in C#? If not, I only have access to Visual Studio 2005 or 2008. Will I be able to write my code in either, and will that DLL be able to be called from the current code base? Or do I have to go looking on ebay for a copy of VS 2003?

  • How can I return an object into PHP userspace from my extension?

    - by John Factorial
    I have a C++ object, Graph, which contains a property named cat of type Category. I'm exposing the Graph object to PHP in an extension I'm writing in C++. As long as the Graph's methods return primitives like boolean or long, I can use the Zend RETURN_*() macros (e.g. RETURN_TRUE(); or RETURN_LONG(123);. But how can I make Graph-getCategory(); return a Category object for the PHP code to manipulate? I'm following the tutorial over at http://devzone.zend.com/article/4486, and here's the Graph code I have so far: #include "php_getgraph.h" zend_object_handlers graph_object_handlers; struct graph_object { zend_object std; Graph *graph; }; zend_class_entry *graph_ce; #define PHP_CLASSNAME "WFGraph" ZEND_BEGIN_ARG_INFO_EX(php_graph_one_arg, 0, 0, 1) ZEND_END_ARG_INFO() ZEND_BEGIN_ARG_INFO_EX(php_graph_two_args, 0, 0, 2) ZEND_END_ARG_INFO() void graph_free_storage(void *object TSRMLS_DC) { graph_object *obj = (graph_object*)object; delete obj-graph; zend_hash_destroy(obj-std.properties); FREE_HASHTABLE(obj-std.properties); efree(obj); } zend_object_value graph_create_handler(zend_class_entry *type TSRMLS_DC) { zval *tmp; zend_object_value retval; graph_object *obj = (graph_object*)emalloc(sizeof(graph_object)); memset(obj, 0, sizeof(graph_object)); obj-std.ce = type; ALLOC_HASHTABLE(obj-std.properties); zend_hash_init(obj-std.properties, 0, NULL, ZVAL_PTR_DTOR, 0); zend_hash_copy(obj-std.properties, &type-default_properties, (copy_ctor_func_t)zval_add_ref, (void*)&tmp, sizeof(zval*)); retval.handle = zend_objects_store_put(obj, NULL, graph_free_storage, NULL TSRMLS_CC); retval.handlers = &graph_object_handlers; return retval; } PHP_METHOD(Graph, __construct) { char *perspectives; int perspectives_len; Graph *graph = NULL; zval *object = getThis(); if(zend_parse_parameters(ZEND_NUM_ARGS() TSRMLS_CC, "s", &perspectives, &perspectives_len) == FAILURE) { RETURN_NULL(); } graph = new Graph(perspectives); graph_object *obj = (graph_object*)zend_object_store_get_object(object TSRMLS_CC); obj-graph = graph; } PHP_METHOD(Graph, hasCategory) { long perspectiveId; Graph *graph; graph_object *obj = (graph_object*)zend_object_store_get_object(getThis() TSRMLS_CC); graph = obj-graph; if (graph == NULL) { RETURN_NULL(); } if(zend_parse_parameters(ZEND_NUM_ARGS() TSRMLS_CC, "l", &perspectiveId) == FAILURE) { RETURN_NULL(); } RETURN_BOOL(graph-hasCategory(perspectiveId)); } PHP_METHOD(Graph, getCategory) { // what to do here?   • Django Show M2M field in both model forms

    - by John
    Hi I am using the forms.ModelForm to create my form. I want to be able to show the manytomany field in both model forms, how do I do this? If the manytomany relationship is defined in the model it is fine and just appears but if it is not in the model (but is still linked via the other model) it does not appear. Hope this makes sense. How can I make it show up? Thanks

  • Is is possible to do an end-run around generics covariance in C# < 4 in this hypothetical situation?

    - by John Feminella
    Suppose I have a small inheritance hierarchy of Animals: public interface IAnimal { string Speak(); } public class Animal : IAnimal { public Animal() {} public string Speak() { return "[Animal] Growl!"; } } public class Ape : IAnimal { public string Speak() { return "[Ape] Rawrrrrrrr!"; } } public class Bat : IAnimal { public string Speak() { return "[Bat] Screeeeeee!"; } } Next, here's an interface offering a way to turn strings into IAnimals. public interface ITransmogrifier<T> where T : IAnimal { T Transmogrify(string s); } And finally, here's one strategy for doing that: public class Transmogrifier<T> : ITransmogrifier<T> where T : IAnimal, new() { public T Transmogrify(string s) { T t = default(T); if (typeof(T).Name == s) t = new T(); return t; } } Now, the question. Is it possible to replace the sections marked [1], [2], and [3] such that this program will compile and run correctly? If you can't do it without touching parts other than [1], [2], and [3], can you still get an IAnimal out of each instance of a Transmogrifier in a collection containing arbitrary implementations of an IAnimal? Can you even form such a collection to begin with? static void Main(string[] args) { var t = new Transmogrifier<Ape>(); Ape a = t.Transmogrify("Ape"); Console.WriteLine(a.Speak()); // Works! // But can we make an arbitrary collection of such animals? var list = new List<Transmogrifier< [1] >>() { // [2] }; // And how about we call Transmogrify() on each one? foreach (/* [3] */ transmogrifier in list) { IAnimal ia = transmogrifier.Transmogrify("Bat"); } } }

  • Where is mpx386.6 and start.c in Minix 3.2?

    - by John Bowlinger
    I'm trying to follow along in Operating Systems and Implementation 3rd edition and I'm now at the part in the book where Tanenbaum is discussing bootup and kernel process switching. He keeps referring to these 2 files (mpx386.s, start.c) that are supposedly in a directory called kernel, but I can't seem to find them. In the root directory, when I go to boot/minix/3.2.0/kernel, kernel just seems to be a binary file that is illegible in terminal. There also seems to be a bunch of mod01-mod12 gz binary files as well in the 3.2.0 directory. Am I in the wrong directory, or is there something I need to install and do to read kernel? I would like to follow along with the book to what's on my screen, instead of constantly flipping back and forth. I realize alot of files are completely different from this book published in 2006 and I accept that, but this seems to be a critical juncture of the book and the operating system as a whole. If it's any consolation, I'm running the OS in Virtualbox on a 64-bit Macbook.

  • Where is the best place to call the .tolist(); inside my controller classes or inside my model repository classes

    - by john G
    I have the following action method, inside my asp.net mvc web application:- public JsonResult LoadZoneByDataCenter(string id) { var zonelist = repository.getrealtedzone(Convert.ToInt32(id)).ToList(); //code goes here Which calls the following model repository method:- public IQueryable<Zone> getrealtedzone(int? dcid) { return tms.Zones.Where(a=> a.DataCenterID == dcid || dcid == null); } Currently I am calling the .tolist() which will interpret the Database from my action method, but my question is where is the best place to call the .tolist() inside the controller or inside the model classes and why ? thanks

  • How do I perform this XPath query with Linq?

    - by John Hansen
    In the following code I am using XPath to find all of the matching nodes using XPath, and appending the values to a StringBuilder. StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); foreach (XmlNode node in this.Data.SelectNodes("ID/item[@id=200]/DAT[1]/line[position()>1]/data[1]/text()")) { sb.Append(node.Value); } return sb.ToString(); How do I do the same thing, except using Linq to XML instead? Assume that in the new version, this.Data is an XElement object.

  • What is a simple way to add a timer to a method

    - by John
    The following is in C#. I'm trying to do something very simple (I think). I have a method that loads an XML document XDocument doc = XDocument.Load(uri); , but I don't want to tie up pc resources if there are issues (connectivity, document size, etc.). So I'd like to be able to add a timeout variable that will cut the method off after a given number of seconds. I'm a newbie when it comes to asynchronous programming and find it confusing that there are so many examples written so many different ways . . . and none of them appear simple. I'd like a simple solution, if possible. Here's my thoughts so far on possible solution paths: 1) A method that wraps the existing load public XDocument LoadXDocument(string uri, int timeout){ //code } 2) A wrapper, but as an extension method XDocument doc = XDocument.LoadWithTimeout(string uri, int timeout); 3) A generic extension method. Object obj = SomeStaticClass.LoadWithTimeout(??? method, int timeout); 3), on its face seems really nice, because it would mean being able to generically add timeouts to many different method calls and not specifically tied to one type of object, but I suspect that it is either i)impossible or ii) very difficult. Please assist. Thanks.

  • jQuery - getting the id of the item selected

    - by John Leonard
    I have a basic jQuery selector question. Let's say I'm parsing JSON and generating a row of data for each item in my result set. On each item row, I want an action button. What is the best practice to script that button so its click action can reference the data specific to that row? Starting with the block below, how do I generate a 'Click Me' button that when clicked will alert with its json data? $.getJSON(url,params,function(json){ if(json.items){ $.each(json.items, function(i, n){ var item = json.items[i];

  • unwanted space before and after nested html table using Internet Explorer 8

    - by John
    I have an html table nested in an html table cell. I want the nested table to use the full size of the cell it is nested in. When I use firefox or google chrome I get the result I want but when I use Internet Explorer 8 (even if I use td style="height="100%") the height of the nested cell depends on it's content. As a result I get whitespace before and after my nested table.

  • Search backward through a string using a regex (in Python)?

    - by John Mulder
    I'm parsing some code and want to match the doxygen comments before a function. However, because I want to match for a specific function name, getting only the immediately previous comment is giving me problems. Is there a way to search backward through a string using the Python Regex library? Is there a better (easier) approach that I'm missing?

  • string s; &s+1; Legal? UB?

    - by John Dibling
    Consider the following code: #include <cstdlib> #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <vector> #include <algorithm> using namespace std; int main() { string myAry[] = { "Mary", "had", "a", "Little", "Lamb" }; const size_t numStrs = sizeof(myStr)/sizeof(myAry[0]); vector<string> myVec(&myAry[0], &myAry[numStrs]); copy( myVec.begin(), myVec.end(), ostream_iterator<string>(cout, " ")); return 0; } Of interest here is &myAry[numStrs]: numStrs is equal to 5, so &myAry[numStrs] points to something that doesn't exist; the sixth element in the array. There is another example of this in the above code: myVec.end(), which points to one-past-the-end of the vector myVec. It's perfecly legal to take the address of this element that doesn't exist. We know the size of string, so we know where the address of the 6th element of a C-style array of strings must point to. So long as we only evaluate this pointer and never dereference it, we're fine. We can even compare it to other pointers for equality. The STL does this all the time in algorithms that act on a range of iterators. The end() iterator points past the end, and the loops keep looping while a counter != end(). So now consider this: #include <cstdlib> #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <vector> #include <algorithm> using namespace std; int main() { string myStr = "Mary"; string* myPtr = &myStr; vector<string> myVec2(myPtr, &myPtr[1]); copy( myVec2.begin(), myVec2.end(), ostream_iterator<string>(cout, " ")); return 0; } Is this code legal and well-defined? It is legal and well-defined to take the address of an array element past the end, as in &myAry[numStrs], so should it be legal and well-defined to pretend that myPtr is also an array?

  • WCF + NserviceBus Names notation

    - by John
    Hi. I trying to create WCF via NserviceBus. Create contract: [ServiceContract] public interface INotifyBusService { [OperationContract(Action = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestMessage_ResultType/Process", ReplyAction = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestMessage_ResultType/ProcessResponse")] ResultType Notify(RequestMessage request); } The problem: When i create a clinet it can't handle this service because expected node with name "Process" in "http://tempuri.org/" namespace. if I do like that [OperationContract(Name = "Process", Action = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestMessage_ResultType/Process", ReplyAction = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestMessage_ResultType/ProcessResponse")] ResultType Notify(RequestMessage request); Everything works fine. Name = "Process" - it's a NServiceBus hardcode, like Enum return type in service method ?

  • C++ Multiple Inheritance Question

    - by John
    The scenario generating this is quite complex so I'll strip out a few pieces and give an accurate representation of the classes involved. /* This is inherited using SI by many classes, as normal */ class IBase { virtual string toString()=0; }; /* Base2 can't inherit IBase due to other methods on IBase which aren't appropriate */ class Base2 { string toString() { ... } }; /* a special class, is this valid? */ class Class1 : public IBase, public Base2 { }; So, is this valid? Will there be conflicts on the toString? Or can Class1 use Base2::toString to satisfy IBase? Like I say there are lots of other things not shown, so suggestions for major design changes on this example are probably not that helpful... though any general suggestions/advice are welcome.

  • Trouble with StreamReader

    - by John
    Alright so here is what I have so far, List<string> lines = new List<string>(); using (StreamReader r = new StreamReader(f)) { string line; while ((line = r.ReadLine()) != null) { lines.Add(line); } } foreach (string s in lines) { NetworkStream stream = irc.GetStream(); writer.WriteLine(USER); writer.Flush(); writer.WriteLine("NICK " + NICK); writer.Flush(); writer.WriteLine("JOIN " + s); writer.Flush(); string trimmedString = string.Empty; CHANNEL = s; } Unfortunately when my IRC dummy enters a room with a password set it writes out the password, if I make it change channel with a command such as #lol test test being the password, since CHANNEL = s; it writes out the password with the command writer.WriteLine("PRIVMSG " + CHANNEL + " :" + "Hello"); That is the only way to write out to IRC so is there a way for the "CHANNEL" to only be the start of the text and just #lol so it doesn't write out the password? I hope you understand my problem.

  • What is the fastest way to get a DataTable into SQL Server?

    - by John Gietzen
    I have a DataTable in memory that I need to dump straight into a SQL Server temp table. After the data has been inserted, I transform it a little bit, and then insert a subset of those records into a permanent table. The most time consuming part of this operation is getting the data into the temp table. Now, I have to use temp tables, because more than one copy of this app is running at once, and I need a layer of isolation until the actual insert into the permanent table happens. What is the fastest way to do a bulk insert from a C# DataTable into a SQL Temp Table? I can't use any 3rd party tools for this, since I am transforming the data in memory. My current method is to create a parameterized SqlCommand: INSERT INTO #table (col1, col2, ... col200) VALUES (@col1, @col2, ... @col200) and then for each row, clear and set the parameters and execute. There has to be a more efficient way. I'm able to read and write the records on disk in a matter of seconds...

  • Setting Environment Variables For NMAKE Before Building A 'Makefile Solution'

    - by John Dibling
    I have an MSVC Makefile Project in which I need to set an environment variable before running NMAKE. For x64 builds I needs to set it to one value, and for x86 builds I need to set it to something else. So for example, when doing a build I would want to SET PLATFORM=win64 if I'm building a 64-bit compile, or SET PLATFORM=win32 if I'm building 32-bit. There does not appear to be an option to set environment variables or add a pre-build even for makefile projects. How do I do this? EDIT: Running MSVC 2008
