• How to use Btrfs with compression on external USB hard drive?

  I would like to make use of Btrfs' transparent compression on an external drive. Which tool is best for formatting the drive? Disk Utility or GParted? How do I activate the compression? During formatting or when I mount the drive? I guess at mount time. I'm using usbmount to automatically mount newly attached devices, because nobody is logged in on the desktop. Would I have to set general default options somewhere in a system configuration file to get Btrfs mounted with compression, or would I specify this via FS_MOUNTOPTIONS in /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf and how? Thanks!

• How do you force Ubuntu to unmount a disk when you press the eject button on an optical drive?

  When upgrading my hardware, I also upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. On my previous system (with 10.04 and earlier) when I ejected a disk from the optical drive, the subfolder in the /media directory was automatically removed. In my new 10.10 system, if I don't eject the disk using the "eject" command within the system, the disk remains mounted, even after a new disk is installed. The new drive is a Blu Ray drive, but I haven't noticed any other problems from it. Normally, this isn't a problem, but it makes installing applications that are spread over multiple CDs more difficult in many cases (i.e. Wine). Any advice?

  I have a Toshiba USB floppy drive that I need to use under Ubuntu. When I connect it, and insert a floppy disk in it, I do not see anything mounted under Ubuntu 10.10. I was suspecting the hardware and/or the floppy disk to be defective, and so I tested the floppy disk as well as the floppy drive itself under Windows XP, and everything was just fine. I was able to find the following instructions: Add the following line to the /etc/modules file: floppy Enter the following shell commands: mkdir /media/floppy mount -t vfat /dev/sdc /media/floppy -o uid=1000 This will mount the floppy, but I would like this to happen automatically, so when I connect the drive to the USB port, it automatically mounts the floppy. How can I make this work? Or does Ubuntu only work with internal Floppy drives?

  My question is kind of hard to follow, but I'm asking if it's possible to make a virtual flash drive and sync it to another device with a USB to USB cable? To make things more clear, think of a typical flash drive. You connect it to a laptop and it shows up as a removable disk. Is it possible to make a computer a host of a "Virtual Drive" that would be connected to a USB cord on one end, and the other end connecting to another device such as a Xbox 360, or another computer.

  To begin with, I'd wanted to take advantage of HTML, CSS, and so on to build a website that looks and works just as I'd like it to. I took a look around on how I could make that work, and I soon saw a lifehacker article showing that its possible to host website files on google drive. I then made sure that the folder containing the files was shared publicly throughout the web, and I now have a working 'google drive hosted' domain for the website. However, I did want to have the custom domain, and so I registered one with network solutions. So now, I'm curious on how I should direct my Network Solutions domain to the index.html I'm hosting on google drive. Would anyone have an Idea?

• Is sudo dd taking too long to wipe hard drive?

  I have a 200gb HDD which I removed from a macbook due to several corrupt files in startup. One thing led to another and I decided that I needed to format the drive. I used the command sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb which is supposed to wipe everything off of the hard drive. It is my understanding that the command writes 0's over every bit on the drive, which I would imagine must take a while. The process has been going for about 18 hours now. I can use other functions of operating system like the web browser and I can even use another terminal window, so I know the system is not frozen. Should I restart the process or let it continue on? Any advice will help. Thanks. By the way, I already noticed a post similar to this that was previously answered though the user was not using the same command as I was.

  I've got one desktop computer Ubuntu 11.04 with an external USB drive mounted on it on the home WRT54L Linux network (192.168.0.2), and when I arrive at home with my laptop, I want to be able to mount the external USB drive from my Ubuntu 11.04 laptop (192.168.0.3) to the desktop, without having to unplug it from the desktop, that is accessing it. Is it possible to send a remote mount command to the desktop usb drive from my laptop? Ideally something that creates a local mountpoint I can just call locally from the programs installed in my laptop, like: username@laptop ~ ./myprograminlaptop /my/file/which/is/actually/on/the/desktop/file.txt

  I am going to be buying a second hard drive for my desktop here pretty soon, because my current hard drive is a piece of junk running windows 7. What I want to know is how to install Ubuntu on the second drive. I am looking for a non complicated answer as I am not familiar with the Ubuntu lingo. I am so sick of Windows.. I used Ubuntu before but it didn't work properly. When i installed it, it said I didn't have enough space... Even tho I had 600GB to use.   If there are still downloading files (ones that will need extra 2 week or unknown time because they are rare files) but need to use a new hard drive because no space is left in hard drive, then is there a way to use new hard drive while keeping existing downloads ongoing? That's because if we change the folder in eMule from G: to H:, then all existing downloads will disappear too... Update: I can move the completed files over to the new hard drive... but it is going to be a never ending task... (old hard drive gets full... move some... and repeat)

• How to share media stored in an attached drive using Windows Media Player?

  We've got a Windows 7 PC with a Windows Media Player music library that includes both files on the internal hard drive and files on a USB-attached hard drive. When we browse this library from another Windows Media Player (on another Windows 7 machine) we see only the files residing on the library host's internal drive. The files residing on the attached drive don't show up at all, yet on the host they appear undistinguished within the library. Is there a configuration change we can make to cause the attached files to be shared properly? We've turned on read-sharing for "Everyone" on the USB drive, but that hasn't helped. Also it might be worth noting that this issue behaves the same way for us if the client machine is a Playstation 3.

• Chromebook, Crouton & “External Drive” is it possible to rename the folder?

  I have a Chromebook where I installed Crouton. I have plugged an SD Card and Chromebook detects it as "External Drive". In my Ubuntu instance, it's located at /media/removable/External Drive/ but this poses some problems for executing some applications I have installed on that external drive. In order to fix the problem, I need to remove all the spaces in the path, which is located in "External Drive". My question is simple, is it possible to move/rename the mount name "External Drive" to something else and doing it automatically at every mount/boot ? Thank you for your help !

• Can I move a one drive RAID 0 array on a PERC 6 to another server?

  We have a Dell Poweredge 2970 with a PERC 6/i RAID controller. We have a one drive RAID 0 array (we wanted to add the drive as a JBOD but the PERC forces you to create an array to access it from the PERC). Can we take the one drive RAID 0 and move it to a new server (one that doesn't have a PERC)? Since there's only one drive in the "array" there's no striping going on...the only issue would seem to be if the PERC has some metadata on the drive that would prevent Windows from reading it. Does anyone have any experience with this scenario?

• Mac .flac player that organizes folder structure? Can Songbird write to a ntfs drive?

  I have a bunch of music in .flac format on my pc. I would like to put that music on an external drive which I can access from both my Mac and PC at work. I have the drive formatted in NTFS using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G drivers. Through Finder I write to the drive fine. If I go to Show Info I see that I have custom access. I am trying to use Songbird to play said .flac files. I have Folder Management turned on. When I try to import to Library it errors out and says make sure drive exists and is writable. This seems like a permissions issue but I do not see how I could change them. If anyone knows of a good .flac player for the mac that also organizes folder structures like iTunes please let me know. This and the ability to write to a NTFS drive is what I am looking for.

  I have a server that was running two 60GB drives as a logical RAID1. At some point the second drive was physically removed and the logical drive has been in "Interim Recovery Mode" for several months now. There's no need for the redundancy of RAID1 on this machine, and I have no intention of replacing the missing drive. If possible I would like to convert the current RAID1 to a single-drive RAID0 by simply dropping the failed drive from the current configuration. I'm only interested in doing this if it can be done in-place. Otherwise I'm perfectly content to leave it in "Interim Recovery Mode" indefinitely.

• Will the other directories on my C drive still be visible?

  My Windows 7 ate itself, corrupted a few files, now refuses to boot. On the same drive were other directories of various assorted non-Microsoft applications I like to use. After the crash, I have been mounting those from outside (as F:[whatever]). If I go ahead and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive and use the drive again as my primary, will those other directories be visible to it from inside? Meaning if I boot up my new installation of Windows from within that drive, will I be able to see those other old directories via Windows Explorer on the C drive (where any haven't been run over by the reinstalled OS)?   I have a computer that has a dead CD drive in it and it seriously needs a new installation of Windows (XP is on it now, but Windows 7 does not sound that bad). At first I tried making a bootable USB drive, but it does not look like the BIOS supports booting directly from a USB drive. Is there some sort of boot loader that I can put onto the hard drive first and boot from the USB drive using that? If not, how else can I re-install Windows on the computer?   My USB flash drive is currently unusable because it somehow (quite suddenly!) became write protected. I have googled around and tried many solutions to this problem, but none of them have worked so far. Here are some of the solutions I've tried: The drive has no tangible switch or button. Formatting the drive won't work, even in command line, even "low level formatting", because the drive is (after all) write protected. Changing certain registry keys to 0 doesn't seem to work. Repair_Neo2.9.exe says "USB Flash Disk not found!" One factor that may make it more difficult to find a solution: I have no idea what the make or model is, because I received the USB flash drive from my university as a gift. So if anyone knows how to find the make and model, that alone might be helpful. Any ideas? Thanks.

  Due to my employer's IT policy, I'm not allowed to have any kind of MP3 playing software on my computer. I do however like to plug my iPod into my computer to keep the battery charged during working hours. Normally, I plug the iPod in, Windows mounts the drive, then I have to go in and eject the drive so I can run my iPod normally while still keeping it charged. Is there anyway I can keep Windows from mounting the drive (and this drive only, I still use my USB flash drive a lot) from auto-mounting? Update: Maybe this is more of an iPod issue, but specifically I would like for the iPod to not display the "Do not disconnect" message when plugged in.

• Should I store my code/projects on my SSD or my secondary drive?

  I just got a new box. It has an SSD for the primary drive, and a 1TB SATA for the secondary drive. I'm going to run windows and my binaries on the SSD and keep all my downloads/documents/music/etc on the secondary drive. My question is should I also keep my Visual Studio Projects and code on the SSD or keep them on the secondary drive? The faster SSD would presumably be better for compiling and indexed searches, but would it be better to keep it on the 2nd drive for a more parallel disk IO situation?

  We are experiencing high volume of PageIOLatch_SH waits on our database (row counts in the Billions). However it seems that our drive Idle time Percentage hovers around 50-60 percent. CPU usage is nill. The Database Tuning Advisor gives no suggestions for optimization. The query plan (actual) from the single stored procedure used on the database puts the majority of the expense on index seek (yeah I know these should be optimial) operations. • Windows 7 Public Documents Folder - how to move it to drive d: [closed]

  Hi, I've just bought a new pc, and it is running Windows 7. I'm wanting to set up all of the documents folders such that they point to folders on a second drive partition (ie. disk D:) so that I have a nice separation of os from docs. I have managed to do this for each user on the machine (by opening up properties for documents folder and changing location). Hwoever, this procedure doesn't seem to work for the public documents folder. I cannot change the location for that one (even though I have administrator privileges). It is greyed out and cannot be changed. Any ideas ? Thanks!!
