• How to see what objects lie in which generation in YourKit?

  I am using YourKit (11.0) to try to profile my j2ee app. The app uses java 6 and running on 64-bit linux (centos). I was told that YourKit possibly tells us which objects exist in which generation (eden, old, etc) at any given point of time. On a side note, I am trying to chase a problem where memory usage keeps increasing until a major collection happens (every 4 hrs) and I am suspicious about few particular objects, so I am interested to know where those objects lie at different times. Fortunately I know lot of memory is being consumed in one particular area of code (so other objects are possibly directly being put into the old gen), but don't exactly know how much of that memory is being put into eden space, how much is being collected by the minor collections, etc. Thanks.

  Hello i have a large database where the client stores personal messages and fire email notifications [if allowed by the users]. certain users have the option of sending messages to their entire network of friends. some users have over 5000 friends in their network so if they select the whole network they'll be sending messages to over 5000 friends and system will store all the messages into a table. the problem is this that it does not insert more than 1000 records and ignores all inserts after the first 1000. i have increased the packet size, bulk_insert_buffer_size but still no luck. since the system stores some of the info in another table for reports, every insert returns its new message id. due to this i can not use the "insert into table (column1,column2) values (value1,value2) , (value1,value2)....etc." table engine is innodb, mysql version is 5.1.3 and is hosted on amazon web services. all i want is to fix this issue of inserting more than 1000 records at a time. as mentioned earlier, it works fine but only up to 1000 records and simply ignores all the records after that. i'm using php foreach(){} to insert message for each friend and if email is available, send notification to the user. this foreach(){} also inserts the same record in another table [with only 3 columns] for generating reports. thank you in advance for all the help and support. • Dynamic allocated array is not freed

  I'm using the code above to dynamically allocate an array, do some work inside the function, return an element of the array and free the memory outside of the function. But when I try to deallocate the array it doesn't free the memory and I have a memory leak. The debugger pointed to the myArray variable shows me the error CXX0030. • Application Servers(java) : Should adding RAM to server depend on each domain's -Xmx value?

  We have Glassfish application server running in Linux servers. Each Glassfish installation hosts 3 domains. Each domain has a JVM configuration such as -Xms 1GB and -XmX 2GB. That means if all these three domains are running at max memory, server should be able to allocate total 6GB to the JVMs With that math,each of our server has 8GB RAM (2 GB Buffer) First of all - is this a good approach? I did not think so, because when we analyzed memory utilization on this server over past few months, it was only up to 1GB; Now there are requests to add an additional domain to these servers - does that mean to add additional 2 GB RAM just to be safe or based on trend, continue with whatever memory the server has?

• Why is address zero used for null pointer?

  In C (or C++ for that matter), pointers are special if they have the value zero: I am adviced to set pointers to zero after freeing their memory, because it means freeing the pointer again isn't dangerous; when I call malloc it returns a pointer with the value zero if it can't get me memory; I use if (p != 0) all the time to make sure passed pointers are valid etc. But since memory addressing starts at 0, isn't 0 just as a valid address as any other? How can 0 be used for handling null pointers if that is the case? Why isn't a negative number null instead?

  I am doing a computing-intensive benchmark using Mathematica and its J/Link Java interface. The benchmark grinds to a halt if a memory footprint of about 320 MB is reached, since this seems to be the limit and the garbage collector needs more and more time and will eventually fail. The Mathematica function ReinstallJava takes the argument command line. I tried to do ReinstallJava[CommandLine -> "java -Xmx2000m ..."] but Mathematica seems to ignore the -Xmx option completely. How can I set the -Xmx memory option for my java program? Where does the limit of 320 MB come from? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And then I free the memory. When I printf p, why does p sill have a value same to the memory address allocated first? And I also can assign value to p[0] and p[1]. Does this mean free() do nothing? Once I allocate memory, I can use later though I have freed it.

• Is it OK to run an array with 22k strings in a PHP code on a shared web host?

  I'm new to writing code so kindly bear with me if this is a very noobish question. A couple of days back I asked a question about a PHP code that matches the the query entered by users on my website to an array stored within the PHP code and displays the matched queries. Here is the code I'm talking about Now I've ended up with a rather large list (over 22k) of strings that have to be stored in the array. Is it ok to run it like this? I'm hosting the site on a shared hostgator package, will this cause my site to crash? I don't know too much about DBs but can I somehow store this on MySQL instead of having it in the code?

User runs LOADER.EXE program LOADER.EXE downloads another EXE but keeps it all in memory without saving it to disk Runs the downloaded EXE just as it would if it were executed from disk, but does it straight from memory I've seen a few applications like this, and I've never seen an example or an explanation of how it works. Does anyone know? Another example is having an encrypted EXE embedded in another one. It gets extracted and decrypted in memory, without ever being saved to disk before it gets executed. I've seen that one used in some applications to prevent piracy.

• How to select random image of specific size using Django / Python?

  I've been using this little snippet to select random images. However I would like to change it to select only images of a certain size. I'm running into trouble checking against image size. If I use get_image_dimensions() I need to use a conditional statement, which then requires that I allow exceptions. So, I guess I need some pointers on just limiting by image dimensions. Later, the _results are scanned again and should erase items that no longer match. • c++ link temporary allocations in fuction to custom allocator?

  Hi, I am currently working on some simple custom allocators in c++ which generally works allready. I also overloaded the new/delete operators to allocate memory from my own allocator. Anyways I came across some scenarios where I don't really know where the memory comes from like this: void myFunc(){ myObj testObj(); ....do something with it } In this case testObj would only be valid inside the function, but where would its memory come from? Is there anyway I could link it to my allocator? Would I have to create to object using new and delete or is there another way? Thanks

• Prevent important OS X process being swapped out, without code change?

  I want hotkey-based utilities like Quicksilver or Zooom to respond immediately. But if they have been idle for a while, they (I guess) get swapped out, and respond slowly, sometimes not even responding to the first few keystrokes I wanted to send to them. How can I encourage such processes (i.e. chosen processes, not all processes system wide) to remain in active memory? Or, am I misunderstanding the problem?

  Ubuntu Server 9.10 So there is the time command which will show you the time it took for a specific process/command to run after the command has completed. For example: :~$ time ls real 0m0.020s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.000s I'd like to also collect the average CPU usage, Memory, and Disk (i/o) utilization after the process has completed using time (or another command if necessary). How can I accomplish this? Mainly I am using this to benchmark MySQL import performance using different innodb_buffer_pool_size settings.

• What solutions do I have to enforce memory limit on PHP server?

  I would like to enforce memory limit on a folder basis (and have it applied on subfolders) but I don't want the user able to change the memory limit. I know I can disable ini_set and I know I can enforce a hard limit or deny ini_set with Suhosin. With the first one, I doubt it will block changing it from the user.ini file, for the second, the user may still be able to change it to the hard limit I enforce with Suhosin. In both cases, I would prefer to not entierly block ini_set because it may have a legit use for other settings. In case it is important, I'm using PHP version 5.4.4 with nginx (PHP in FPM mode)
