  • GPGPU programming with OpenGL ES 2.0

    - by Albus Dumbledore
    I am trying to do some image processing on the GPU, e.g. median, blur, brightness, etc. The general idea is to do something like this framework from GPU Gems 1. I am able to write the GLSL fragment shader for processing the pixels as I've been trying out different things in an effect designer app. I am not sure however how I should do the other part of the task. That is, I'd like to be working on the image in image coords and then outputting the result to a texture. I am aware of the gl_FragCoords variable. As far as I understand it it goes like that: I need to set up a view (an orthographic one maybe?) and a quad in such a way so that the pixel shader would be applied once to each pixel in the image and so that it would be rendering to a texture or something. But how can I achieve that considering there's depth that may make things somewhat awkward to me... I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me with this rather simple task as I am really frustrated with myself. UPDATE It seems I'll have to use an FBO, getting one like this: glBindFramebuffer(...)

  • netlogo programming question - catalyst implementation part 2

    - by user286190
    hi the catalyst speeds up the reaction but remains unchanged after the reaction has taken place i tried the following code breed [catalysts catalyst] breed [chemical-x chemical-x] ;then the forward reaction is sped up by the existence of catalysts to react-forward let num-catalysts count catalysts ;speed up by num-catalysts ;... end and it works fine but I want to make it so that the catalyst can be switched on and off with the 'switch' button ..so one can see the effects with and without the catalyst..i tried putting a switch in but catalyst has already been defined Also i want to make the catalyst visible so one can see it in the actual implementation (in the world) like making it a turtle is there are another way to implement this apart from using breeds i tried making the catalyst a turtle but it doesnt work ; Make catalyst visible in implementation clear-all crt catalysts 100 ask catalysts [ set color white ] show [breed] of one-of catalysts ; prints catalysts any help will be greatly appreciated thank you

  • Linux Kernel programming: trying to get vm_area_struct->vm_start crashes kernel

    - by confusedKid
    Hi, this is for an assignment at school, where I need to determine the size of the processes on the system using a system call. My code is as follows: ... struct task_struct *p; struct vm_area_struct *v; struct mm_struct *m; read_lock(&tasklist_lock); for_each_process(p) { printk("%ld\n", p->pid); m = p->mm; v = m->mmap; long start = v->vm_start; printk("vm_start is %ld\n", start); } read_unlock(&tasklist_lock); ... When I run a user level program that calls this system call, the output that I get is: 1 vm_start is 134512640 2 EIP: 0073:[<0806e352] CPU: 0 Not tainted ESP: 007b:0f7ecf04 EFLAGS: 00010246 Not tainted EAX: 00000000 EBX: 0fc587c0 ECX: 081fbb58 EDX: 00000000 ESI: bf88efe0 EDI: 0f482284 EBP: 0f7ecf10 DS: 007b ES: 007b 081f9bc0: [<08069ae8] show_regs+0xb4/0xb9 081f9bec: [<080587ac] segv+0x225/0x23d 081f9c8c: [<08058582] segv_handler+0x4f/0x54 081f9cac: [<08067453] sig_handler_common_skas+0xb7/0xd4 081f9cd4: [<08064748] sig_handler+0x34/0x44 081f9cec: [<080648b5] handle_signal+0x4c/0x7a 081f9d0c: [<08066227] hard_handler+0xf/0x14 081f9d1c: [<00776420] 0x776420 Kernel panic - not syncing: Kernel mode fault at addr 0x0, ip 0x806e352 EIP: 0073:[<400ea0f2] CPU: 0 Not tainted ESP: 007b:bf88ef9c EFLAGS: 00000246 Not tainted EAX: ffffffda EBX: 00000000 ECX: bf88efc8 EDX: 080483c8 ESI: 00000000 EDI: bf88efe0 EBP: bf88f038 DS: 007b ES: 007b 081f9b28: [<08069ae8] show_regs+0xb4/0xb9 081f9b54: [<08058a1a] panic_exit+0x25/0x3f 081f9b68: [<08084f54] notifier_call_chain+0x21/0x46 081f9b88: [<08084fef] __atomic_notifier_call_chain+0x17/0x19 081f9ba4: [<08085006] atomic_notifier_call_chain+0x15/0x17 081f9bc0: [<0807039a] panic+0x52/0xd8 081f9be0: [<080587ba] segv+0x233/0x23d 081f9c8c: [<08058582] segv_handler+0x4f/0x54 081f9cac: [<08067453] sig_handler_common_skas+0xb7/0xd4 081f9cd4: [<08064748] sig_handler+0x34/0x44 081f9cec: [<080648b5] handle_signal+0x4c/0x7a 081f9d0c: [<08066227] hard_handler+0xf/0x14 081f9d1c: [<00776420] 0x776420 The first process (pid = 1) gave me the vm_start without any problems, but when I try to access the second process, the kernel crashes. Can anyone tell me what's wrong, and maybe how to fix it as well? Thanks a lot! (sorry for the bad formatting....) edit: This is done in a Fedora 2.6 core in an uml environment.

  • Low latency programming

    - by Sambatyon
    I've been reading a lot about low latency financial systems (especially since the famous case of corporate espionage) and the idea of low latency systems has been in my mind ever since. There are a million applications that can use what these guys are doing, so I would like to learn more about the topic. The thing is I cannot find anything valuable about the topic. Can anybody recommend books, sites, examples on low latency systems?

  • Tuesday + 3 = Friday? C++ Programming Problem

    - by lampshade
    Looking at the main function, we can see that I've Hard Coded the "Monday" into my setDay public function. It is easy to grab a day of the week from the user using a c-string (as I did in setDay), but how would I ask the user to add n to the day that is set, "Monday" and come up with "Thursday"? It is hard because typdef enum { INVALID, MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY} doesn't interpret 9 is 0 and/or 10 as 1. #include <iostream> using std::cout; using std::endl; class DayOfTheWeek //class is encapsulation of functions and members that manipulate the data. { public: DayOfTheWeek(); // Constructor virtual ~DayOfTheWeek(); // Destructor void setDay(const char * day); // Function to set the day void printDay() const; // Function to Print the day. const char * getDay() const; // Function to get the day. const char * plusOneDay(); // Next day function const char * minusOneDay(); // Previous day function const char * addDays(int addValue); // function that adds days based on parameter value private: char * day; // variable for the days of the week. }; DayOfTheWeek::DayOfTheWeek() : day(0) { // Usually I would allocate pointer member variables // Here in the construction of the Object } const char * DayOfTheWeek::getDay() const { return day; // we can get the day simply by returning it. } const char * DayOfTheWeek::minusOneDay() { if ( strcmp( day, "Monday" ) == 0) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Sunday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Tuesday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Monday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Wednesday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Tuesday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Thursday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Wednesday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Friday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Thursday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Saturday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Friday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Sunday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day before " << day << " is "; return "Saturday"; } else { cout << "'" << day << "'"; return "is an invalid day of the week!"; } } const char * DayOfTheWeek::plusOneDay() { if ( strcmp( day, "Monday" ) == 0) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Tuesday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Tuesday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Wednesday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Wednesday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Thursday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Thursday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Friday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Friday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Saturday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Saturday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Sunday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Sunday" ) == 0 ) { cout << "The day after " << day << " is "; return "Monday"; } else { cout << "'" << day << "'"; return " is an invalid day of the week!"; } } const char * DayOfTheWeek::addDays(int addValue) { if ( addValue < 0 ) { if ( strcmp( day, "Monday" ) == 0) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Friday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Tuesday" ) == 0 ) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Saturday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Wednesday" ) == 0 ) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Sunday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Thursday" ) == 0 ) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Monday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Friday" ) == 0 ) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Tuesday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Saturday" ) == 0 ) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Wednesday"; } else if ( strcmp( day, "Sunday" ) == 0 ) { cout << day << " - " << -addValue << " = "; return "Thursday"; } else { cout << "'" << day << "' "; return "is an invalid day of the week!   • Dataflow Programming - Patterns and Frameworks

    - by Styrac
    I just came across the proposed Boost::Dataflow library. It seems like an interesting approach and I was wondering if there are other such alternative frameworks for C++, and if there are any related design patterns. I have not ruled out Boost::Dataflow, I am just looking into any available alternatives so I can understand the domain and my options better (or roll my own if necessary).

  • Source of parsers for programming languages?

    - by Arkaaito
    I'm dusting off an old project of mine which calculates a number of simple metrics about large software projects. One of the metrics is the length of files/classes/methods. Currently my code "guesses" where class/method boundaries are based on a very crude algorithm (traverse the file, maintaining a "current depth" and adjusting it whenever you encounter unquoted brackets; when you return to the level a class or method began on, consider it exited). However, there are many problems with this procedure, and a "simple" way of detecting when your depth has changed is not always effective. To make this give accurate results, I need to use the canonical way (in each language) of detecting function definitions, class definitions and depth changes. This amounts to writing a simple parser to generate parse trees containing at least these elements for every language I want my project to be applicable to. Obviously parsers have been written for all these languages before, so it seems like I shouldn't have to duplicate that effort (even though writing parsers is fun). Is there some open-source project which collects ready-to-use parser libraries for a bunch of source languages? Or should I just be using ANTLR to make my own from scratch? (Note: I'd be delighted to port the project to another language to make use of a great existing resource, so if you know of one, it doesn't matter what language it's written in.)

  • How would you answer Joel's sample programming questions?

    - by Khorkrak
    I recently interviewed a candidate for a new position here. I wish though that I'd read Joel's Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing prior to that interview - naturally I happened upon it the night afterwards :P http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/GuerrillaInterviewing3.html So I tried answering the easy questions myself - yeah I used the python interpreter to type stuff in and tested the results a bit - I didn't look up any solutions beforehand though and I also thought about how long it took me to come up with answers for each one and what I'd look for the next time I interview someone. I'd let them type stuff into the interpreter and see how did used python's introspection capabilities too to find out things like what's the re module's method for building a regex etc. Here are my answers - these are in python of course - what are yours in your favourite language? Do you see any issues with the answers I came up with - i.e. how could they be improved upon - what did I miss? Joel's example questions: Write a function that determines if a string starts with an upper-case letter A-Z. import re upper_regex = re.compile("^[A-Z]") def starts_with_upper(text): return upper_regex.match(text) is not None Write a function that determines the area of a circle given the radius. from math import pi def area(radius): return pi * radius**2 Add up all the values in an array. sum([1, 2, 3, 4, 5]) Harder Question: Write an example of a recursive function - so how about the classic factorial one: def factorial(num): if num > 1: return num * factorial(num - 1) else: return 1

  • Cloud-aware programming and help choosing a good framework

    - by Shoaibi
    How can i write a cloud-aware application? e.g. an application that takes benefit of being deployed on cloud. Is it same as an application that runs or a vps/dedicated server? if not then what are the differences? are there any design changes? What are the procedures that i need to take if i am to migrate an application to cloud-aware? Also i am about to implement a web application idea which would need features like security, performance, caching, and more importantly free. I have been comparing some frameworks and found that django has least RAM/CPU usage and works great in prefork+threaded mode, but i have also read that django based sites stop to respond with huge load of connections. Other frameworks that i have seen/know are Zend, CakePHP, Lithium/Cake3, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, Ruby on Rails.... So i would leave this to your opinion as well, suggest me a good free framework based on my needs. Finally thanks for reading the essay ;)

  • C Programming: malloc and free within a loop

    - by kouei
    Hi all, I just started out with C and have very little knowledge about performance issues with malloc() and free(). My question is as such: if I were to call malloc() followed by free() in a while-loop that loops for, say, 20 times, would it run slower compared to if I were to call free() outside the loop? I am actually using the first method to allocate memory to a buffer, read a string of variable length in a file, perform some string operation, and then clear the buffer after every iteration. If my method results in a lot of overhead then I'd like to ask for a better way for me to achieve the same results. Sorry for my bad English. Thanks and regards, K

  • Windows Programming: ID2D1Bitmap Interface - Getting the Bitmap Data

    - by LostInBrackets
    I've been writing my own library of functions to access some of the new Direct2D Windows libraries. In particular, I've been working on the ID2D1Bitmap interface. I wanted to write a function to return a pointer to the start of the bitmap data (for the editing of particular pixels, or custom encoding or whatever else I might wish for in the future). Unfortunately... problem ahead... I can't seem to find a way to get access to the raw pixel data from the ID2D1Bitmap Interface. Does anyone have an idea how to access this? One of my friends suggested drawing the bitmap to a surface and extracting the bitmap data from there. I don't know if this would work. It definitely seems inefficient and I wouldn't know which kind of surface to use. Any help is appreciated. (c++ in particular, but I assume the code won't be tooo different between languages) (I know I could just read in the data direct from the file, but I'm using the WIC decoders which means it could be in any number of indecipherable formats)
