• What hardware factors may be considered bottlenecks on a Hyper-V virtual server during load testing?

  Our organization is load testing our application using virtual servers via Hyper-V to see what the user load can be using fair equipment on a single box setup. The developer group questioned the validity of the tests given the normal use of the box by the other virtual machines. IT admins answered that it is an acceptable platform to load test on because it has its own CPUs, memory and disks allocated. Is their answer mostly correct? What hardware factors may be considered bottle necks given the other virtual machines when testing our application? For example, would bus speed be a concern or network IO? The application consists of a windows service written using the 4.0 .NET Framework and SQL Server 2008 R2.

• Drive stopped working on windows server 2003 and I receive a "controller error"

  I can access the server in safe mode. I have a Proliant 360 Hp server with Windows server 2003 R2. The event viewer is completely filled up with this error: the driver detected a controller error on Device\Harddisk3\DR3 I individuated the drive affected. It is drive H that is a secondary non mirrored drive. When I access anything on that drive I receive: "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" What should I do? Is this just a driver issue or a hard drive failure? Please give me a quick help as my websites are offline due to this. Any suggestion is welcome!

• Can a GPO Startup Script starts a background process and exit immediately?

  I have Googled, and not yet found an answer. Scenario: One of my GPOs have a Startup Script that takes a long time to finish. For some reasons, we have to run the scripts synchronously. Naturally, this causes slow startup time (sometimes as long as 15 minutes!) before the Logon screen appears. After profiling and analyzing the perpetrator script, I conclusively determined that the step where it's taking a long time to finish will not affect the result of the succesive GPOs. In other words, that particular step (and all steps afterwards) can run in the background. My Question: Is it possible for the Startup Script to just 'trigger' another script/program that will run to completion even when the Startup Script exits? That is, the "child processes" of the Startup Script continues to live even when the Startup Script's process ends? Additional Info: The Domain Controllers are 2008 and 2008 R2's. The workstations are Windows XP.

• Windows 2008 x64 displays SP1 when SP2 is installed

  After setting up a Windows 2008 x64 server (not R2), I installed a number of Microsoft updates. After installing these updates, the computer reports that it has SP1 installed, not SP2. I believe the culprit is KB917607, which allows Windows 2008 to display .hlp files. Now I have to upgrade Internet Explorer on this server, and it won't install without SP2. I am very leery about reinstalling SP2, as I have installed a large number of post-SP2 updates, and I've had issues after reinstalling SP2 in similar circumstances. How can I fix Windows so it reports the correct service pack?

  So IIS likes to shut down app pools that aren't in use. While this makes sense, I would like to have certain app pools conterminously running, but I don't want to just disable the automatic app pool restart as some of the settings (e.g., maximum memory limit) are good to have. I know that Microsoft announced the IIS Application Warmup module as an IIS 7.5 feature only then to do a Bait & Switch and pull it again so that they can put it in IIS 8 instead, so I wonder if something exists to run on IIS 7.5/Windows 2008 R2?

  Is there the possibility to limit Active Directory users' max concurrent login sessions? I've read many articles and discussions about the solution, but none of them seem to be working. Many had suggested UserLogin script that doesn't work in Windows Server 2008. Some other suggested CConnect that is not good enough. It's also very complicated. Some others have introduced UserLock that should be paid for. It's wondering that Windows Server 2003 DOES have the feature (wile as a third-party), but Windows Server 2008 doesn't have! • Dhcp clients fail after successful import of server to new machine (win2k3)

  I transfered the configs of a dhcp server from one server to another both running Windows Server 2003 R2 following http [://] support.microsoft.com/kb/325473. The new server has a statically configured ip(outside the scope) like the old one. Stopped the server on the old, and started up in the new server (authorized too) - but when I ipconfig /renew from a client its network interface fails with all 0.0.0.0 (or 169...*). I read somewhere I need to reconcile the scope to sync the new registry values ('ll try this tomorrow). What other troubleshooting steps can I take other than these (which didn't help)? Things work fine when the old server resurrects and the new one is taken down. The new server showed there was no requests for offer.

• Dreamweaver not connecting RDC

  I am trying to use Dreamweaver to Remote Desktop Connect into a computer where a website is hosted. Normal traffic to this server is routed to another domain, but when accessed by IP (it is my understanding) the traffic never hits any sort of nameserver request, and so stays there. This server is set up so that the only way I can access it is RDC. I can connect using an RDC program, but when I attempt to use Dreamweaver, I get a vague error. The desired action could not be completed because an unexpected client/server communication error occurred. I have Web URL as http://my.ip.number/directory And in the settings panel, I have Host name: my.ip.number Port: 3388 Host directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\directory/directory Username: user Password: ••••••• What could be preventing Dreamweaver form connecting?   I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

  I'm having a rough time getting SSL configured properly on an Openfire install. Quite honestly, I just don't know what to do. It seems convoluted on the steps necessary to get a cert imported. Has anyone out there successfully done this? I'm running Openfire 3.6.4 on Server2003 R2. I have a signed UC cert which is ready to roll, I just don't know what to do with it. I've been through tons of tutorials on converting from .crt to .der to .pem, using openssl and java tools, but its only getting more confusing as I go.

  I know that where I have worked, I have pushed alot for virtualizing our servers. I think that it is much easier to implement and maintain than physical servers. I have been using Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 R2 since it was released. Right now at my workplace we have 12 VMHosts that hold about 55 VMs. We have 6 other servers that we have been unable to convert to VMs. I want to know how other people in our field view virtualization. I know that I have had developers dislike the notion of VMs claiming major performance hits. What do other Sys Admins think about virtualized servers?

• Windows 2008 startup script will not run?

  I am trying to get a very simple batch script to run when my Windows 2008 Server (R2) system starts up. I have added the script to the "Startup Scripts" in the local group policy by running gpedit.msc, and I see the script listed under Windows Settings/Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)/Startup when I run rsop.msc, but the script is not being executed. The "Last Executed" column in rsop is empty even after a reboot, and a file that should be created by the script is never created. At the moment, the entire contents of the script are: rem Check if this script is running. date /t > c:\temp\flag The target directory (c:\temp) exists. The script is called c:\scripts\startup.bat, and works fine if I run it by hand.

I'm familiar with the basic usage of the Kerberos protocol where the protocol authenticates a client when he tries to use a shared resource (server, folder, printer, etc.). We have three distinct and independent .NET applications that we develop inhouse (app A, app B & app C) but they need to communicate for a given reason (A recieves messages only from B and C and C recieves messages only from B).   I have installed PHP 5.2.13 through Web Platform Installer on IIS 7.5/windows 2008 R2 Now I'm trying to install additional PHP extensions, such as mcrypt, so I downloaded the compiled .zip file from the php windows binaries site. I put the relevant dlls in the extensions folder, and added the lines in the php.ini: [PHP_MCRYPT] extension=php_mcrypt.dll After restarting IIS, no application was working. This was with VC6 compiled/non thread-safe compiled version of PHP 5.2.13 .zip package. I also tried with the thread-safe version, which prevented IIS to restart and forced me to reboot the server. What am I doing wrong here?

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2, with IIS 7.5 and PHP 5.3 (configured by FastCGI). In my php.ini I have: log_errors = On display_errors = Off error_log = syslog (also tried an actual file with appropriate permissions) Each time a page contains an error, it is never logged anywhere, but it is displayed on the page (unless I turn log_errors off). I'm guessing that the stderr from php-cgi.exe is being put on the page, instead of being logged where it is supposed to be. Is there a setting somewhere that allows me to log these errors properly?

  I am able to access only the Default Web Site on a Windows 2008 R2 Server which is running IIS 7.5 The Default Web Site's binding is to "All Unassigned", same way as I have done it on a different machine running IIS6 under Windows 2003 Server. The bindings of the desired Web Site have the IP address of the server and the correct home directory. Regardless what I do, the only page content I can see is the default index page in the wwwroot directory which is the Default Web Site.   Server software has been 64-bit only for a while now (Since Server 2008 R2 for Windows, even earlier for Exchange and Sharepoint) and even Ubuntu are pushing you away from 32-bit versions for their server OS's. But is there any good, quantifiable reason to keep a 32-bit desktop operating system maintained? We're preparing our Windows 8 images for the (unfortunate?) few that will be early adopters. The majority of our desktop computers have 4gb or less of RAM, but I would love to not have to bother supporting a 32-bit flavoured operating system any more. Any reason why I should?

We would like to install 2 VM with role domain controller w2k (the domain is different from the domain of the hyper-v cluster). Do you know if there are any restriction on doing it? Some collegues say that we risk data corruption if we do live migrations. Others speak about the fact that Microsoft don't support w2k any more. • How can I stop ntbackup requiring my new password every time I'm forced to change my Windows passwor

  I have a scheduled job that runs each night using ntbackup which copies a folder on my HDD to a network share. The problem is that every time I'm required to change my Windows password I have to remember to change it in ntbackup aswell, otherwise the backup fails silently i.e. I get no warning that the backup isn't being done. Is there a way to schedule this job so it will automatically pick up my new Windows password, or somehow not be tied to my main login? My user account type is Debugger, not full Administrator, so I'm not sure if that would restrict me in any way, e.g. still forcing a four-weekly password change on a dedicated user account for this. The PC runs XP SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain.

First login happens fine. Creates mobile account, no issues noticed. After I logout, the next login attempt fails, and after only shaking one time, their AD account is locked out. opendirectory.log makes a vague mention of account being expired but honestly I don't see much in the logs that pops out as useful. Any help?

• IIS + PHP + Page with lots of images = Intermittent 403 errors

  I am using an up-to-date Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, running IIS 7.5 and PHP 5.3.6/FastCGI On PHP pages with lots of images (60+), some of the images fail to load It is not always the same images-- on each page refresh an image that worked previously may not load, while an image that did not now does Looking at the Net tab in Firebug reveals that the failing image requests are 403 errors All of the images are located on the server in question, and the images directory has the correct permissions I believe this problem is the result of a limit on requests All of my attempts at researching this problem point to maxConnections setting in IIS, yet mine is set at the highest/default of 4294967295 (maxBandwidth too) I am also running a ColdFusion site on the same IIS installation, and it does not suffer from 403's on pages with lots of images I am left thinking that there is another connection limit (in PHP or FastCGI?) overriding the IIS connection limit I don't see anything that looks like a request limit in the php.ini, what am I missing? Any help would be appreciated, thank you
