  Hello, In my iPhone application, I need to calculate the time difference between the time a message was created on the server, and the time my phone received it. The server (Java) puts in a number returned by System.currentTimeMillis() as metadata along with the message. How do I compare this number with the current time on the device? Could not find a suitable NSDate method to do this comparison. Thanks in advance!

  Attempting to implement a poor man's test of whether a process is still running or not (essentially an equivalent of the trivial kill(pid, 0).) Hoped to be able to simply call OpenProcess with some minimal desired access then test for either GetLastError() == ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER or GetExitCodeProcess(...) != STILL_ACTIVE. Nice try... Running on Windows XP, as administrator: HANDLE hProc = OpenProcess(PROCESS_QUERY_INFORMATION, FALSE, pid); if (!hProc) { DWORD dwLastError = GetLastError(); } ...fails miserably with dwLastError == ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED when pid is owned by a different (not SYSTEM) user. Moreover, if pid was originally owned by a different user but has since terminated, OpenProcess also fails with ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED (not ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER.)   I'm working on my dedicated server running CentOS. I found out that one of my applications which starts up via a script in /etc/init.d/ requires MySQL to be running, or else it throws an error, so essentially I currently have to start it by hand. How can I detect, in a bash script (#!/bin/sh), whether the MySQL service has started yet? Is there some way to poll port 3306 until it is open to accept connections, and only then continue with the script? Or maybe set an order so that the script doesn't run until the mysqld script runs?

• Reverse web proxy with time constraints

  I have a web application which produces several unique URLs of the type http://service.company.com/service.html?type=aaaa&key=jfiZm6u6cW where the last part is a randomly generated key. Each such URL provides access to an instance of the service provided. I am looking for a way to restrict access to those URLs based on time constraints, as an example URL#1 should be available between 8:00AM and 10:00AM on May 30, URL#2 should be available between 10:30AM and 12:00PM on May 31, and so on. I already have a resource scheduling application based on Drupal and would like to find a way to include those URLs as scheduled resources. The web application is deployed on Apache Tomcat, so I don't have the knowledge or the resources to alter it, therefore I thought that I could put some sort of reverse proxy in front of the web app that could implement the time constraint feature. In my thoughts the reverse proxy would allow or disallow access to each URL based on the rules that my scheduling application would provide. There may be other ways to deliver such a solution, but I can't think of anything better, so the question is: is there a reverse web proxy architecture that could allow access to the destination URLs based on time and date rules? Any other ideas are more than welcome.

• Auto Re-Running of Tests that fail

  I have a set of Selenium/MbUnit Tests that work fine, but tend to take a while to run (over 4 hours) A problem i am finding is that about 1 in 20 test seems to timeout when running. I have confirmed the Selenium GRID is working and the Selenium RC's are all fine, it just seems to be a qwerk of the system. What is really annoying though is that if i run these tests again they will usually pass. What i want to know is if there is a way for me to auto rerun the tests (probably in the code) if a perticular type of exception is caught... I have attempted to put a few lines of code in the catch statement but i know this is a very hacky way of re running the tests.   I am trying to deploy my ASP.NET Application which is currently running on Windows Server 2003 32bit and IIS6 to a new Server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and IIS7. My application uses ASP.NET version 4.0 and is working fine on 2003 machine. My problem is: I have deployed the application and it is working fine except that the .flv video is not playing in browser I have added all required mime settings but still no luck when i try to run the video i don't get any error just a blank screen showing no video. Same configuration is working on previous machine and the new server is also able to play the video when run from the earlier machine. Please if you have any solution help me out.

  I have a PHP script that runs a .bat file on my windows machine using $result = system("cmd /C nameOfBatchFile.bat"); This sets some environmental variables and is used to call Amazon EC2 API from the command line. How do I do the same from a Linux server? I have renamed my .bat file to a shell (.sh) and changed the script to use 'export' when setting env vars. I have tested by running the code from a putty terminal and it does what it should. So I know the commands in the script are good. How do I run this from PHP? I have tried running the same command as above with the new filename and I don't get any errors, or file not found etc but it doesn't appear to work. Where do I start trying to solve this?

• cron stops running when processing multiple items

  Cron stops running (no visible error) after a few hours when I add more than 5 jobs in my cron tab. Each job runs every minute (polls a webpage for information which takes 1 second). I tried putting all of my php jobs in a shell script and called this shell script instead but the same problem occurs. Cron stops running, no error in the log file, no error email sent out either. Anyone encountered this before? Where/how canI debug this?

• How to efficiently restore Library folder partially deleted on OS X

  I am using OS X Lion, and trying to delete some files I did accidentally (from home directoy): rm -fr Library I realized about this some 15 seconds later and did killall rm Some folders have been deleted, of course, inside "Library". Now the system seems to be ok, but I fear what will happen in case of reboot. I have a Time Machine backup from 5 days ago. I wonder if it would be a good solution, just to copy whole "Library" folder from my home directory from backup and replace this one. Or, what do you think would be the best approach? PS: In order to restore just deleted directories inside "Library", in which order does "rm" start to delete directories, alphabetically?

I have time zone value of the User is stored in DB with this format (-05:00,1), where -5.00 represents EST time zone value and the 1 indicates that this time zone follows daylight saving (if 0 not a daylight saving zone).   i'm a first time 'SuperUser' poster .. what i want is to programatically change Desktop Wallpaper every few hours .. i'm using a batch file (.bat) and don't want to use other languages or programs, just the pre-installed stuffs with Windows XP .. i've already made my script that will modify values in the Registry reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v Wallpaper /d "C:\Pictures\picture1.jpg" but it's not taking effect real time even with this command: RUNDLL32.EXE USER32.DLL,UpdatePerUserSystemParameters ,1 ,True need to reboot first to take effect. if i'm going to use Display Properties, it'll show at once. what i've noticed is that changes will take effect real time if it's a .bmp file and not for .jpg images. Second option is to convert JPG to 24-bit BMP files (to look exactly the same, but will triple the file size), but i'm hoping a better way .. i've already googled things but no avail.. i hope you (the helpful reader) can post any .bat or even vbs script to change Desktop Wallpaper instantly with JPG pictures .. hoping there's an answer without installing other apps or scripts ..

What would be a good design to ensure that infected files are not uploaded to the server.   How can I catch something going on if the user chooses the exit option from a menu? I mean I'd like to be able to manage the event of a user who is going to close the application but some activity is being performed so he/she shouldn't be able to exit. Here's the code I wrote. • Sync Linux to Windows 2003/2008 Natively

  Without using any external packages for Windows, can Linux synchronise it's clock to a Windows 03/08 Server natively? I've tried it using various NTP packages for Windows but would like to use just Windows software for this. EDIT: I've tried the below however it doesn't work. I've put TimeSource in /etc/hosts, stated server TimeSource in /etc/ntp.conf however when I do a service ntpd start it doesn't sync (it's 3 minutes out at the minute). I then stopped the NTPD and did a ntpdate TimeSource, thinking it would sync and then I'd start the NTPD once it's got the time, and it says: no server suitable for synchronization found. Though I can ping it. Any thoughts?

  I'm looking to improve the D garbage collector by adding some heuristics to avoid garbage collection runs that are unlikely to result in significant freeing. One heuristic I'd like to add is that GC should not be run more than once per X amount of time (maybe once per second or so). To do this I need a timer with the following properties: It must be able to grab the correct time with minimal overhead. Calling core.stdc.time takes an amount of time roughly equivalent to a small memory allocation, so it's not a good option. Ideally, should be cross-platform (both OS and CPU), for maintenance simplicity. Super high resolution isn't terribly important. If the times are accurate to maybe 1/4 of a second, that's good enough. Must work in a multithreaded/multi-CPU context. The x86 rdtsc instruction won't work.

  I'm still investigating issues I have with GC tuning (see prior question), which involves lots of reading and experimentation. Sun Java5+ JVMs attempt to automatically select the optimal GC strategy and parameters based on their environment, which is great, but I can't figure out how to query the running JVM to find out what those parameters are. Ideally, I'd like to see what values of the various GC-related -XX options are being used, as selected automatically by the VM. If I had that, I could have a baseline to begin tweaking. Anyone know to recover these values from a running VM?
