  • Apache Ubuntu SSL Configuration

    Where besides the vhost configuration can SSL be configured? I see an SSL configuration in sites-available but it's not an enabled vhost (and the certificate it points to is expired). Using apache2 -V shows me the configuration directory is /etc/apache2 but I can not for the life of me find the SSL configuration and it's driving me crazy.   • Set up Ubuntu in Virtualbox to have static ip

    I frequently work in different locations, and need to have a virtualbox version of Ubuntu server running locally. While I was at home getting it set up, I was able to ssh into the server using the locally allocated IP address. However, now that I'm elsewhere, ifconfig is still showing the old 10.0.x.x ip address, but instead of being in the 10.0.x.x space, my laptop's ip starts with 192.168.x.x With that in mind, if there a straightforward way to set up the virtual box Ubuntu server in such a way that I can just connect using "ssh servername" regardless of it's ip address?

  • Xorg fails to start under Ubuntu

    I'm running desktop Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell laptop. Previously it was Ubuntu 9.04. After some period of time (lets say 3-4 months) my X fails to start automatically after some restart calls. If that takes place my network manager applet doesn't start either (after I do startx). Can any one point out what I'm missing/what's the problem? EDDITED I get a perfect server boot meaning there's no Xorg started. Command line interface is all I get starting from login and further.

    I have set up a second drive on Ubuntu Server. The directory displays correctly but Windows users cannot write or create files on the directory. I have Samba set up so Windows can access the drives. here is the last bit of my /etc/samba/smb.conf [personeel] path = /media/windows browsable = yes guest ok = yes writable = yes read only = no create mask = 0775 directory mask = 0775 I want the directory to be shared with writable permissions to everyone who can access the Ubuntu Server. I have tried sudo chmod but to no success. Any help would be appreciated

  • VMware player unity with ubuntu 11.10 guest on W7 host - empty applications start menu

    I am trying to run Ubuntu 11.10 as a guest on Windows 7. When I enter into unity mode, the menu for the guest os, next to the Windows start menu is empty. I have searched around the web for a fix for this, but there doesn't seem to be anything that works. I have tried restarting the guest os several times, I am running VMware player as an admin, but the guest start menu in unity mode is still empty. I have tried clearing the VM cache. I have installed all the Ubuntu updates and the VMware tools. Has anyone had this problem?

  • Sticking with Ubuntu 12.04 while heavily using PPA for newest software updates (Apache 2.4, PHP 5.5)

    I was wondering whether is it worthwhile to stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS until 14.04 comes or should I be switching to just the latest Ubuntu server version 13.10. My server needs are not enterprise heavy and previous thought to keep with LTS was simply to gain the security updates without having to upgrade the servers every couple months. But as we are moving forward with our software development, I have found that alot of the default version of software with 12.04 is way out of the date forcing me to up date via PPA or from source instead of from default apt-get. ie PHP 5.3 is on 12.04, and I'd like to get it to 5.5. Is it worthwhile to simply move to 13.10 in that situation? With the idea to move to 14.04 when it comes?

    I asked in the Ubuntu area, but thought I would get a better answer here. Was anyone able to install packetfence on Ubuntu 10? I tried a tutorial, but didn't have any luck. Some of the services installed and are working apache with php, snort, pfdetect, and pfdhcplistener. I can even get info with pfcmd node view all, but for the life of me I can't get it to work with apache2. When I run pfcmd service pf start I also get an error uninitialized value $_[7] in join at /usr/local/pf/lib/pf/class.pm line 170

    The situation is the following. This is an Ubuntu box: Linux ns3mx3 2.6.32-41-server #89-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 27 22:33:31 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Which means that when I first issue \e in psql, I'm asked to choose an editor. Then there is the .selected_editor file, which contains # Generated by /usr/bin/select-editor SELECTED_EDITOR="/usr/bin/mcedit-debian" So far this is OK (it's my problem that I consider this completely useless, but never mind). Then I set up a .psqlrc file: \set PSQL_EDITOR /usr/bin/vim \set EDITOR /usr/bin/vim \set VISUAL /usr/bin/vim As you can see, I wanted to be sure not to miss a candidate variable for editor setting. The file is used as expected: test=# \echo :EDITOR /usr/bin/vim But when I issue the \e command, none of these is used - I fall back to SELECTED_EDITOR. The situation remains just the same if I append an \unset SELECTED_EDITOR to the .psqlrc file. Now how can I make .psqlrc setting win over the default editor? (PostgreSQL version id 9.1.4)

    How do I get Ubuntu upstart to not hang on interactive start & stop? I have created many upstart scripts that work fine during init, but often hang when I enter them at the console. If I CTRL+C out, all that happens is that the job changes state. The script is never run. I’m running Ubuntu Lucid on a Xen virtual server with a Linux 2.6.39 kernel.   • Server not repsonding after Ubuntu upgrade

    I have a server that was running Ubuntu 8.04. I upgraded Ubuntu via the command-line and got no warning messages. After it was done the server restarted but now I am unable to SSH back in. My site is also not resolving. My guess is I overwrote something important. What are some trouble-shooting steps I can take? I am able to execute commands through my VPS provider's admin interface. I'm not sure what version it upgraded me to honestly.

    I installed DDD debugger in Ubuntu and trying to work with it. It looks like DDD UI doesn't work properly with Ubuntu desktop environment. Edit boxes are almost unusable: sometimes they accept keyboard input, most of times input is ignored. Internal resizing panes are not working. Is there some way to get DDD UI working properly? The same behavior is in Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit, and 10.4 64 bit, so this is not Ubuntu version issue.

  • Why didn't 12.04 install?

    Ok, so I've installed Ubuntu many times on my computer.. Normally on the same partition, and WIndows would always delete Ubuntu(I don't know how.. it just happens) if i go away from keyboard during boot and it chooses Windows automatically because I took to long. So i tried to reinstall again, but after the fifth time it wouldn't let me, and told me to check "wubi-12.04-rev266.log". It took a while to find, but when i found it, I had no idea what any of it meant, as I'm no programmer.I first tried this the day Precise Pangolin came out. SO skip ahead 2.5 months, when I finally found this file, and i then got the idea of making a new partition to install Ubuntu on, but I used wubi, like I always did. It didn't look like it would f anything up, so I did it. it went through all the downloads, extracting, etc. Which took about 40 minutes total, then ended with an error message saying to check "wubi-12.04-rev266.log". i did.   • Mac OS X roaming profile from Samba with OpenLDAP backend on Ubuntu 11.10

    I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :) After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here.   • Ardour won't rewind when jack time master

    Using Ubuntu Studio 12.04, ardour will not rewind when it is set to the jack time master. I've read that this could be due to a jack/ardour version conflict, but I am not sure what the correct combo should be. The same thing happens with "ardour 2.8.14 (built from revision 13065)" and "ardour 2.8.12 (built from revision 10144)". The latter is the default installation with ubuntu studio 12.04 LTS. We have observed real workers performing real tasks in real work environments, and we have developed a set of new standards of application design that have been scientifically proven to be beneficial to enable today’s workers. We share such expertise to enable our customers and partners to benefit from our insights and to further their return on investment when building Oracle applications. So, What is User Experience? ?The user interface (UI) is about the on-screen user context provided by the layout of widgets (such as icons, fields, and buttons and more) and the visual impact of colors, typographic choices, and so on. The UI comprises the “look and feel” of the application that users interact with, and reflects, in essence, the most immediate aspects of usability we can now all relate to.  User experience, on the other hand, is about understanding the whole context of the world of work, how workers go about completing tasks, crossing all sorts of boundaries along the way. It is a study of how business processes and workers goals coincide, how users work with technology or other tools to get their jobs done, their interactions with other users, and their response to the technical, physical, and cultural environment around them. User experience is all about how users work—their work environments, office layouts, desk tools, types of devices, their working day, and more. Even their job aids, such as sticky notes, offer insight for UX innovation. User experience matters because businesses needs to be efficient, work must be productive, and users now demand to be satisfied by the applications they work with. In simple terms, tasks finished quickly and accurately for a business evokes organization and worker satisfaction, which in turn makes workers feel good and more than willing to use the application again tomorrow. Design Principles for the Enterprise Worker The consumerization of information technology has raised the bar for enterprise applications. Applications must be consistent, simple, intuitive, but above all contextual, reflecting how and when workers work, in the office or on the go. For example, the Google search experience with its type-ahead keyword-prompting feature is how workers expect to be able to discover enterprise information, too. Type-ahead in PeopleSoft 9.1 To build software that enables workers to be productive, our design principles meet modern work requirements about consistency, with well-organized, context-driven information, geared for a working world of discovery and collaboration. Our applications must also behave in a simple, web-like way just like Amazon, Google, and Apple products that workers use at home or on the go. Our user experience must also reflect workers’ needs for flexibility and well-loved enterprise practices such as using popular desktop tools like Microsoft Excel or Outlook as required. Building User Experience Productively The building blocks of Oracle Fusion Applications are the user experience design patterns. Based on the Oracle Fusion Middleware technology used to build Oracle Fusion Applications, the patterns are reusable solutions to common usability challenges that ADF developers typically face as they build applications, extensions, and integrations. Developers use the patterns as part of their Oracle toolkits to realize great usability consistently and in a productive way. Our design pattern creation process is informed by user experience research and science, an understanding of our technology’s capabilities, the demands for simplification and intuitiveness from users, and the best of Oracle’s acquisitions strategy (an injection of smart people and smart innovation). The patterns are supported by usage guidelines and are tested in our labs and assembled into a library of proven resources we used to build own Oracle Fusion Applications and other Oracle applications user experiences. The design patterns library is now available to the ADF community and to our partners and customers, for free.   • Installing Lubuntu on to Android tablet and switching os in between

    I would like to install Lubuntu onto my tablet, as it seems more lightweight than ubuntu. However, it seems there are only images for Windows/ Mac? For Android devices, what image shall I download? I've also found an article about installing Ubuntu on Android phone. And by installing VNC, it seems that one could "switch" from OS to OS on the phone, i.e. I could be viewing the Ubuntu OS on the phone via a VNC viewer, and closing the viewer gives me back the Android OS. My questions are: 1) What ubuntu/lubuntu image (windows?mac?) shall I download in order to get this done? 2) My ultimate goal is to run some windows programs on a Android tablet. I am planning install a lubuntu os and then wine... what will be the minimum hardware requirement in order to do this? Thank you very much!

  • Bootloader error Ubuntu 12.04, system goes to Grub-rescue instead of booting

    I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on my system but it is constantly giving me bootloader install fail error. I have tried to lot to solve this issue but reading articles over the internet but still no gain. Firstly since the bootloader was not getting installed I tried to install it on all the alternative paths given in the installer, failing with I selected install ubuntu without bootloader. Then I tried to manually install bootloader via terminal at try ubuntu via grub-install, but I was not able to do that. Then I tried using boot-repair and it was also not able to install the bootloader because after it my system shows grub-rescue. I tried to use boot-repair and install bootloader on a seperate partition mounted to /boot and still my system is booting and it still shows grub-rescue. The error which my system shows during boot is: Error : no such device : 04ac0510-bd4f-43b8-b885-b885-11c4dec21db8 I am not dual booting and ubuntu is the only OS I am installing. I am using Raid 0 with two blue western digital hard drive so I am not sure whether it is right or not. The details given by boot-repair are in the below mentioned link; http://paste.ubuntu.com/1147208/ Afterwards, I made one more change I installed ubuntu again and this time I installed the bootloader at a different partition on /boot. After this the bootloader error has gone but I am still not able to boot to ubuntu as I get the same error I was getting before. I have not installed dmraid, I feel it is neccessary for Raid0, but I thought ubuntu already has Raid drivers. Moreover in the dmraid installation instructions for 12.04, I used the one for 10.04 and selected to install bootloader at the partitions from the dropdown. This time the installation finished normally without an error but still I am not able to boot my system as the same error shows during booting this time also. Now I am stucked and I have no clue on how I can boot my system. Please tell me how can I boot my system.

    Sometimes in projects we need to spend time on tasks such as: exploring alternate frameworks and tools learning the framework and tools selected for the project setting up the servers and project infrastructure (version control, build environments, databases, etc) If we are using User Stories, where should all this work go? One option is to make them all part of first user story (e.g. make the homepage for application). Another option is to do a spike for these tasks. A third option is to make task part of an Issue/Impediment (e.g. development environment not selected yet) rather than a user Story.
