• Shortest distance between a point and a line segment

  I need a basic function to find the shortest distance between a point and a line segment. Feel free to write the solution in any language you want; I can translate it into what I'm using (Javascript). EDIT: My line segment is defined by two endpoints. So my line segment AB is defined by the two points A (x1,y1) and B (x2,y2). I'm trying to find the distance between this line segment and a point C (x3,y3). My geometry skills are rusty, so the examples I've seen are confusing, I'm sorry to admit.

• Is there an existing algorithm for this notation translation/conversion?

  A system has a notation that would require writing an expression like (A+B)*C as #MUL(#ADD(A,B),C). Is there already an algorithm to do this kind of notation conversion so users can enter in a more conventional way? In other words an algorithm to convert from infix - my notation. First issue is I don't know an exact name for my notation... it's similar to reverse-polish but not quite. Every operator is encoded as a function taking arguments.

• jQuery Ajax Methods Not Returning XHR Object

  UPDATE: I haven't figured out what's going on, but this definitely seems to be a problem with my project. After creating a simple test page, I was able to verify that getJSON does in fact return an XHR object like it's supposed to. Per the stackoverflow question/answer here: Kill ajax requests using javascript using jquery. and a number of other question/answers on this site and others, the jQuery Ajax methods should return the XHR object. However, when I run the following code, request is "undefined". var request = $.getJSON(url, function(data) { console.log(data); }); console.log(request); Did I miss a change in jQuery? I'm using 1.4.4.

  What's the best way to detect event support in Firefox. Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari/Chrome all support eventName in object, but Firefox doesn't. My test case is this: javascript:alert("onclick" in document.createElement("a")) Which alerts true when entered into the address bar on the aforementioned browsers, and alerts false for Firefox.   Is there a way to set a limit on how many menu items users can add to Primary Links menu? I'm working on a Drupal site and I have a horizontal primary links nav bar. There is only room for no more than 7-8 links in the nav bar. I don't want the future maintainer of the site to add more than 8 items to the menu. Is there a way I can set a limit on that? There are about 50 fields in the form that should be considered 'digit' fields where they shouldn't be anything less than 0. What should I change with this Javascript to ensure that all 'digit' like fields have this alert box pop up? I cannot use jquery/mootools for validation - it has to be flat Javascript. Thanks.

  file_get_contents() is returning "failed to open stream" when I call it on an HTTPS URL. Warning: file_get_contents(https://google.com) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No error in E:\\htdocs\callback3.php on line 5 Same call will work with a non-SSL URL. At first, I thought it was a security issue with my webhoster, but I have verified with phpinfo() that allow url open is indeed allowed. I have also tried this code and verified it works: Anyone have any ideas why file_get_contents() is failing with an HTTPS URL? update: People correctly pointed out this was an HTTPS issue. My webhoster claims this should work, and has no idea how to resolve this. Anyone have specific directions I can give them for their IIS7 setup?

As we have rank() function in sql server do we have something with which we can find the students rank??? • Custom class object in Initialization list

  I have a class Bar: class Bar { public: Bar(void); ~Bar(void); }; And a class Foo that gets a reference to Bar object as a constructor parameter and needs to save it in a private member bar_ : class Foo { private: Bar& bar_; public: Foo(Bar& bar) : bar_(bar) {} ~Foo(void) {} }; This doesn't compile : overloaded member function not found in 'Parser' missing type specifier - int assumed. Note: C++ does not support default-int Now i suspect couple of things that i need to assure, the second error is for Bar& bar_; declaration in Foo. Do i need to use an explicit constructor when declaring bar_ ? I am interested in learning how the compiler works regarding this matter, so a detailed explanation would be highly appreciated. • Laravel 4 - Using multiple paginators on one page

  I've been googling for this question but can't find any good answers. I found that there is a method called setPageName() for the paginator but it only works when used like Paginator::setPageName('page'). I looked up the paginator in the Laravel API (http://laravel.com/api/class-Illuminate.Pagination.Environment.html) and the method is a public function just like setBaseUrl which I am currently using like $albums->setBaseUrl('/album/'); for instance I want to have a Photo paginator (?photoPage=n) and a Comment paginator (?commentPage=n). Is there any way that I can use two paginators that use different page names in the URL on one page, or at least call the setPageName() method like setBaseUrl()?

• ASP.Net Treeview - Client side event handling (jQuery??)

  I have a Treeview (bog standard ASP.Net Treeview) that is bound to an Xml source which allows the user to navigate to various parts of our system. Nothing special.... However, I wanted to generate a breadcrumb for use in the main content area on the client side when the user clicks a node in the Treeview control. I know there are mechanisms available for breadcrumb generation (such as site maps) but for various reasons I need to do it when a node is clicked. So far hooking up a click event using the document ready function available as part of jQuery is easy. However, having spent sometime looking I can not see how I navigate back up the tree nodes to get to each parent nodes text value to build the breadcrumb. I have been playing with .parent(), .parents() and .closest() available via jQuery but don't seem to be getting anywhere. Has anyone done anything like this or can anyone provide a better method? Thanks in advance....

The problem is, When I am trying use fscommand2 function, Compiler throwing an error saying: Scene 1, Layer 'Layer 1', Frame 1, Line 7 1180: Call to a possibly undefined method fscommand2. But, I am able to use fscommand. But, it will not fulfill my requirement to get Device(Mobile) properties like DeviceID etc. Please help me in using fscommand2 or any equivalent API support in ActionScript 3.0. Thanks in advance.

• New to javascript, why is jQuery such a beast?

  Hey Everyone, I'm new to javascript (functional programming is okay for me, though) and I am wondering how jQuery got away with some of the design decisions they made. Is it just too much work to fix now or what? For instance, there seems use of strange symbols in strings when accessing elements in the DOM or weird function definitions for $, that are forcing me to check references every other time I want to get some basic data. Can someone point me to a learning source where I can learn all of these nuances of jQuery (jQuery's examples just don't cut it, they're too spread out)? Maybe someone has a super good reference site/pdf for jQuery? Thanks

• Project Euler #163 understanding

  I spent quite a long time searching for a solution to this problem. I drew tons of cross-hatched triangles, counted the triangles in simple cases, and searched for some sort of pattern. Unfortunately, I hit the wall. I'm pretty sure my programming/math skills did not meet the prereq for this problem. So I found a solution online in order to gain access to the forums. I didn't understand most of the methods at all, and some just seemed too complicated. Can anyone give me an understanding of this problem? One of the methods, found here: http://www.math.uni-bielefeld.de/~sillke/SEQUENCES/grid-triangles (Problem C) allowed for a single function to be used. How did they come up with that solution? At this point, I'd really just like to understand some of the concepts behind this interesting problem. I know looking up the solution was not part of the Euler spirit, but I'm fairly sure I would not have solved this problem anyhow.
