    I want to utilise my ephemeral storage as mentioned in this question but I seem to be falling at the first hurdle.   • How should modules access data outside their scope?

    I run into this same problem quite often. First, I create a namespace and then add modules to this namespace. Then issue I always run into is how best to initialize the application? Naturally, each module has its own startup procedure so should this data(not code in some cases, just a list of items to run) stay with the module? Or should there be a startup procedure in the global namespace which has the startup data for ALL the modules. Which is the more robust way of organizing this situation? Should some things be made centralized or should there be strict adherence to modules encapsulating everything about themselves? Though this is a general architecture questions, Javascript centric answers would be really appreciated!

  • FTP file access problem

    I recently got a malware on my website. I have made the backup of the website on my computer and trying to wipe off my FTP. I am trying to delete the root folder but getting this error message on all of the malicious files, Response: 550 Could not delete index.php: Permission denied I am the sole administrator of the ftp so permission should not have been an issue. My host provider seems not to suffer from this problem as his websites are running well without any malware. I have also tried to change the root to 777 to see if the file permission change could help me delete the files but still I am getting the same error. Please help out. Thanks

  • Building a custom Xsession with VNC access

    I have a small project where I'll need to build a very minimal X11 environnement for a cyber coffee kind shop. My idea is to have a simple server which will create a dozen of VNC Daemon listening on a different port (each port = one client). The server is working, i can connect using vnc to different port. Now i'm looking for a solution to create a customized desktop for each client; with a bare minimum of apps which i want to be able to add for each user. Like user1 will have app1 and app2, user2 will have app1 only etc. I plan to use openbox as a WM but no clue on 'how' to add custom icons on the desktop of it. Any clue, starting point would be interesting.

  • Photo Management Software for OS X That Supports Multiple Library Locations

    I'm looking at the possibility of changing our photo management software. Thinking about Aperture or Lightroom. And want to know if either supports: Having folders/libraries on separate harddrives/Volumes. Tolerates having network folders occasionally connected Snappy interface A solid enough piece of software as not to crash or behave weirdly. [ so the wife doesn't get stuck and have to call me ;) ] Background The wife is photographer and I'm the computer programmer. Our current setup is Picasa, with a "Recent/Working" folder on the local iMac harddrive, and "Archive" folders on NFS mounted Linux Server, Raid 5, for redundant and extra storage capacity. (the Linux server also syncs with Amazon's EC2) Picasa is doing OK, but I get annoyed when it doesn't do behave properly. Usually around issues when the Linux disk isn't mounted. And overall, I wish Picasa seemed a little more polished and snappier. Thanks, Lance

    I am trying to generate a GPG key, and I cannot generate enough entropy. So I installed rng-tools and tried following these instructions: http://serverfault.com/questions/214605/gpg-not-enough-entropy When I am logged in as root, and try to run rngd -r /dev/urandom I get the following error: can't open /dev/random: Permission denied I find this disturbing as I am root. This is Ubuntu on a virtual server (via Parallels I believe.)

  • What should be included in risk management section of software's architecture documentation?

    I am going to develop a Java application (a Spring Web application that will be used to extract data from various data sources) and I want to include risk management of the software in the architecture documentation. By risk management (I am not sure if this is the right name) I mean documenting possibilities of what can go wrong with the software and what to do in those cases. At first I tried to draft some lists, including things like database performance decrease, change of external components that the software interacts with, security breaches etc. But as I am not an experienced developer I cannot rely on those drafts, I don't think they are exhaustive. I searched web hoping to find something similar to the Joel Test or to find any other resource that will cite the most popular causes of problems that should be included and analyzed in risk management documentation, but I haven't found much. Finally, my question is: What should be included in risk management section of software's architecture documentation?

    Let me start today’s blog post with a direction question. How many of you have ever used Template Browser? Template Browser is a very important and useful feature of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Every time when I am talking about SQL Server there is always someone comes up with the question, why there is no step by step procedure included in SSMS for features. Honestly every time I get this question, the question I ask back is How many of you have ever used Template Browser? I think the answer to this question is most of the time either no or we have not heard of the feature. One of the people asked me back – have you ever written about it on your blog? I have not yet written about it. Basically there is nothing much to write about it. It is pretty straight forward feature, like any other feature and it is indeed difficult to elaborate. However, I will try to give a quick introduction to this feature. Templates are like a quick cheat sheet or quick reference. Templates are available to create objects like databases, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, statistics, and functions. Templates are also available for Analysis Services as well. The template scripts contain parameters to help you customize the code. You can Replace Template Parameters dialog box to insert values into the script. Additionally users can create new custom templates as well with folder structure. To open a template from Template Explorer Go to View menu >> Template Explorer or type CTRL+ALT+L. You will find a list of categories click on any category and expand the folder structure. For our sample example let us expand Index Folder. In this folder you will notice the various T-SQL Scripts. These scripts can be opened by double click or can be dragged to editor area and modified as needed. Sample template is now available in the query editor area with all the necessary parameter place folder. You can replace the same parameter by typing either CTRL+SHIFT+M or by going to Query Menu >> Specify Values for Template Parameters. In this screen it will show  Specify Values for Template Parameters dialog box, accept the value or replace it with a new value. This will now get your script ready to go. Check it one more time and change the script to fit your requirement. I personally use template explorer for two things. First one is obviously for templates but the hidden one and an important one is for learning new features and T-SQL commands. There is so much to learn and so little time.     1. It does not allow you to use parameters to the PeopleSoft connect. It may be changed later. However, it was a big issue when we try to address customer issues. 2. It requires EFFDT as an option. It expect that people change the EFFDT using Mapping Editor. How can a business user does that every month? 3. It asks for a Tree Name. Many PeopleSoft tree structure supports multiple trees. Tree is just a header of the hierarchy. Whenever you add a new Tree, you need to create a new mapping!! It does not make sense to use PowerConnect due to the customer demands. All requirements are from customers. We have no choice but stop using it.

  • iPhone - Memory Management - Using Leaks tool and getting some bizarre readings.

    Hey all, putting the finishing touches on a project of mine so I figured I would run through it and see if and where I had any memory leaks. Found and fixed most of them but there are a couple of things regarding the memory leaks and object alloc that I am confused about. 1) There are 2 memory leaks that do not show me as responsible. There are 8 leaks attributed to AudioToolbox with the function being RegisterEmbeddedAudioCodecs(). This accounts for about 1.5 kb of leaks. The other one is detected immediately when the app begins. Core Graphics is responsible with the extra info being open_handle_to_dylib_path. For the audio leak I have looked over my audio code and to me it seems ok. self.musicPlayer = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:songFilePath] error:NULL]; [musicPlayer prepareToPlay]; [musicPlayer play] is called later on in a function. 2) Is it normal for there to be a spike in Object Allocation whenever a new view or controller is presented? My total memory usage is very, very low except for whenever I present a view controller. It spikes then immediately goes back down. I am guessing that this is just the phone handling all the information for switching or something. Blegh. Wall of text. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps! =)

  • Why is Samba Access from Windows So Slow?

    I have set up a file server using Ubuntu 12.04 Server. The purpose is to serve several network drives to Windows users that have heretofore been served by numerous NAS drives. I have Samba set up with one share defined so far. I can connect to it fine from my test Windows 7 and Windows XP machines. When I do a directory listing on the share from Windows, it can take up to two minutes to get all the files listed--would have taken about 1.5 seconds when I was using the Buffalo NAS. Sometimes it times out with no response at all. I have used the default smb.conf and simply added the following for the share I have set up so far: [engineering] comment = Ubuntu File Server Share path = /networkdriveshares/engineering browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 I have tried changing the workgroup setting to the Active Domain name our Windows computer use but didn't notice any difference. The only other change I made to the default smb.conf was adding in the recommended socket settings: SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 socket options = TCP_NODELAY Lots of information about slow Samba shares online but I have tried all of the solutions I have found and none have made a lick of difference. If there is no solution, is there a better way to set up a file server to be used by Windows clients?

    I'm having some difficulties when I'm trying to connect to my local SQL Server. I'm pretty sure the server is running (many of the other topics on this subject suggests that the services might not be running, so I kinda looked into it, but they do seem to be running). But when I try to access it through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio it doesn't seem to be able to find them.   • Introducing Agile development after traditional project inception

    About a year and a half ago, I entered a workplace that claimed to do Agile development. What I learned was that this place has adopted several agile practices (such as daily standups, sprint plannings and sprint reviews) but none of the principles (just in time / just good enough mentality, exposing failure early, rich communication). I've now been tasked with making the team more agile and I've been assured that I have complete buy-in from the devs and the business team. As a pilot program, they've given me a project that just completed 15 months of requirements gathering, has a 110 page Analysis & Design document (to be considered as "written in stone"), and where I have no access to the end users (only to the committee made up of the users' managers who won't actually be using the product). I started small, giving them a list of expected deliverables for the first 5 sprints (leaving the future sprints undefined), a list of goals for the first sprint, and I dissected the A&D doc to get enough user stories to meet the first sprint's goals. Since then, they've asked why we don't have all the requirements for all the sprints, why I haven't started working on stuff for the third sprint (which they consider more important but is based off of the deliverables of the first 2 sprints) and are pressing for even more documentation that my entire IT team considers busy-work or un-related to us (such as writing the user manual up-front, documenting all the data fields from all the sprints up front, and more "up-front" work). This has been pretty rough for me as a new project manager, but there are improvements I have effectively implemented such as scrumban for story management, pair programming, and having the business give us customer acceptance tests up front (as part of the requirements documentation). So my questions are: What can I do to more effectively introduce change to a resistant business? Are there other practices that I can introduce on the IT side to help show the business the benefits of agile? The burden of documentation is strangling us - the business still sees it as a risk management strategy instead of as a risk. What can we do to alleviate their documentation concerns and demands (specifically the quantity of documentation and their need for all of it up front)? We are in a separate building from our business, about 3 blocks away and they refuse to have their people on the project co-habitate b/c that person "won't be able to work on their other projects while they're at our building." They expect us to always go over there and to bundle our questions so that we can ask them all at once and not waste that person's time with "constant interruptions." What can we do to get richer communication from them? Any additional advice would also be appreciated. Thanks!

I'll admit I'm a spring newbie, but you can correct me if I'm wrong, this one liner looks kinda fishy in a best practices sort of way: @RepositoryRestResource(collectionResourceRel="people"...) public interface PersonRepository extends PagingAndSortingRepository<Person, Long> For those who are unaware, the following does many things: It is an interface definition that can be registered in an application context as a jpa repository, automagically hooking up all the default CRUD operations within a persistence context (that is externally configured). and also configures default controller/request-mapping/handler functionality at the namespace "/people" relative to your configured dispatcher servlet-mapping. Here's my point. I just crossed 3 conceptual layers with one line of code! this feels against my seperation-of-concern instincts but i wanted to hear your opinion. And for the sake of being on a question and answer site, I would like to know whether there is a better way of seperating these different layers - Service, Data, Controllers - whilst maintaining as minimal configuration as possible
