• Selecting dictionary items by key efficiently in Python

  suppose I have a dictionary whose keys are strings. How can I efficiently make a new dictionary from that which contains only the keys present in some list? for example: # a dictionary mapping strings to stuff mydict = {'quux': ..., 'bar': ..., 'foo': ...} # list of keys to be selected from mydict keys_to_select = ['foo', 'bar', ...] The way I came up with is: filtered_mydict = [mydict[k] for k in mydict.keys() \ if k in keys_to_select] but I think this is highly inefficient because: (1) it requires enumerating the keys with keys(), (2) it requires looking up k in keys_to_select each time. at least one of these can be avoided, I would think. any ideas? I can use scipy/numpy too if needed.

I want to get a subject, and get its related past questions of a particular year. I was thinking of fetching a subject and getting its related past question. Currently am implementing my code such that I rather get the past question whose subject and year correspond to any specified subject like this_subject=Subject.objects.get(name=the_subject) thepastQ=Pastquestion.objects.get(year=2000,subject=this_subject) I was thinking there is a better way to do this. Or is this already a better way? Please Do tell ?

  I have a class to evaluate set algebra but wish to template it. Is it possible to declare the return type as std::set<T> and then pass std::string as the class template param. There are no errors in the class but only when I try to instantiate SetEvaluation<std::string> Can anyone shed light on this problem? thanks

  I have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort. Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same. For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.

  I have stored the XML path to items in a string like this: response->items->item. What I need to do is to access an array called $xml_array like this: $xml_array['response']['items']['item'] When I write it in the code it works. The thing is that I want it to be done on the fly. I use this to convert response->items->item to ['response']['items']['item']: $xml_path = 'response->items->item'; $explode_path = explode('->', $xml_path); $correct_string = false; foreach($explode_path as $path) { $correct_string .= '[\''.$path.'\']'; } the problem is that I can't access $xml_array by doing this: $xml_array[$correct_string] So I end up with this: $xml_tag = 'title'; $xml_path = 'response->items->item'; $correct_string = '$items = $xml2array'; $explode_path = explode('->', $xml_path); foreach($explode_path as $path) { $correct_string .= '[\''.$path.'\']'; } $correct_string .= ';'; eval($correct_string); foreach($items as $item) { echo $item[$xml_tag].'<br />'; } and access the $xml_array array through $items array. • Why can't I install from software center?

  There was a problem upgrading to Firefox 13. This error kept returning: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). Now it seems that there is some problem with dpkg and I can't install anything from software center. I already tried to clean previous packages with sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf and then sudo apt-get update, it didn't work. When running sudo dpkg --configure -a, I get this: dpkg: problems with dependencies prevent the configuration of firefox-globalmenu: firefox-globalmenu depends on firefox (= 13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1); however: The package is not installed. dpkg: error while processing firefox-globalmenu (--configure): problems com dependencies - leaving unconfigured There has been found errors while processing: firefox-globalmenu What should I do to fix this?? EDIT: I don't have the necessary expertise to understand why what I did worked and what was causing the conflict, but anyway, since there was a problem with firefox-globalmenu:, I went to synaptics package manager, I removed this particular package and reinstalled it. After that, I was able to install Firefox from synaptics and also any other applications from software center. However, still there was a problem, when running sudo apt-get update, the following kept returning: Failed to get gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages Verification code hash doesn't match. E: Some archives index failed at being downloaded. They have been ignored, or older copies are used instead. So I typed sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf in terminal and then again sudo apt-get update and everything is fine now. I did this before an answer was posted, anyway I agree the problem was that particular package and its removal. So I'll mark the below answer as accepted.

• Software Center does not load

  I'm having problems with opening my Software center and it just shuts off after loading a few seconds. I can't even get it to the main page of the Software Center. I did try to follow these commands but of no avail: sudo apt-get purge software-center sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install software-center Instead, I get an error after entering the first command: eim@eim-VAIO:~$ sudo apt-get purge software-cente Reading package lists...   I have model, Match, with two foreign keys: class Match(model.Model): winner = models.ForeignKey(Player) loser = models.ForeignKey(Player) When I loop over Match I find that each model instance uses a unique object for the foreign key.
