• Installing gnome on Linode with Ubuntu 9.10 x64 - remote VNC/RDP

  Hi, I'm a self confessed Linux newbie, having lived and worked mostly within the Windows world for most of my life. I'm making the effort to try moving my virtual host from a Windows box to a Linode instance to try and better learn Linux, and one of the uses I occasionally have with my current Windows VPS is to RDP into it and browse the internet. I'm aware that this is probably not best practice (from either performance or security), and most of the time I will be learning from the shell, but I do occasionally need to boot into a GUI. • Core i5 Turboboost/C states Freezing computer

  I'm not sure which, but I just had a heck of a time getting my computer to boot up and not freeze. It would run until it finished booting windows, then everything would freeze. This happened until I turned off turboboost and all the c states on the processor. What could be causing this? Is the processor going bad?

  I've done some initial googling.. and found AMD's A10 6800K supports virtualization via AMD-V. I'd like to install ESXI 5.5 on a USB thumbdrive to drive two+ VM's running Lubuntu. Has anyone seen the AMD A10 APU line used for baremetal hosting? AMD A10 APU 6800K 8GB DDR3 non ECC RAM 350GB HDD old spin drive (Sata I?III? unknown) I want to get started but afraid I'll wipe my current linux instance if it goes bad.

• SSL certificate fail apache

  Hello, I have setup a certificate on Apache server. When I access my site's https pages, I see the certificate flashing (in FireFox's url tab) and disappearing immediately. The browser stays in the same windows (https) but now certificate info is not displayed and the connection is not encrypted. Can anyone recommend on how I can even start checking what is wrong ? (Certificate fail ? Bad config ?) Thanks

• Linux equivalent to Mac OS X's fs_usage

  Is there a Linux equivalent to the Mac OS X command fs_usage? According to the man page it does the following: "report system calls and page faults related to filesystem activity in real-time". I suppose one option would be to use strace and filter the data, however the fs_usage command allows all the processes running on the system to be "traced" at the same time. • Most basic, low power home surveillance system

  I am thinking of setting up a simple but effective surveillance system for my house that is: Very low powered (preferably no PCs left running out of stand-by mode) Cheap. When motion (or sound) is detected, I would like it to: Send an email/phone alert to me Record and upload video to the web (in case they steal the camera) So I imagine a system where I leave a netbook PC in stand-by mode and have it woken up by a motion detector. This initiates software to send alerts and periodically upload recorded video to the web. The software part is easy for me, but I'm not really a gadget-man so I'd like some advice on using a motion sensor of some sort to wake up the PC. Does anyone have some good advice?   I've just completely uninstalled nginx 1.0.6 from my server (Ubuntu 11.04) using apt-get remove nginx rm -rf /etc/nginx/ rm -rf /usr/sbin/nginx rm /usr/share/man/man1/nginx.1.gz apt-get remove nginx* Now I want to install it again, however when starting nginx, I get errors such as: Restarting nginx: nginx: [emerg] open() "/etc/nginx/nginx.conf" failed (2: No such file or directory) Then I placed my own conf file, then I get a new error: Restarting nginx: nginx: [emerg] open() "/etc/nginx/mime.types" failed (2: No such file or directory) in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf:12 Now it seems that apt-get install nginx doesn't install it completely, I cleared the apt-get cache, doesn't seem to help. How can I get a full installation of nginx using apt-get?

• passwd ldap request to ActiveDirectory fails on half of 2500 users

  We just setup ActiveDirectory in my company and imported all linux users and groups. On the linux client: (configured to ask ldap in nsswitch.conf): If i do a common ldapsearch to the AD ldap server i get the complete number of about 2580 users. But if i do this it only gets a part of all users, 1221 in number: getent passwd | wc -l Running it with strace shows kind of attempt to reconnect My ideas were: Does the linux authentication procedure run ldapsearch with a parameter incompatible to AD ldap ? Or probably it is a encoding issue. The windows user are entered in AD with all kind of characters. Maybe someone could shed light on this and give a hint how to debug that further!?   I'm downloading something from mediafire which really has many sponsor sites that are not good: ad.xtendmedia.com and mdinfo.com. And possibly the cause of some spyware and adware in my system. Does killing the whole process of firefox and not closing those pop-up windows(ad sites) helps avoid the effects of those bad sites.

• Monitoring physical RAM errors on Linux

  I would like to monitor the ram of two linux systems (Ubuntu and Red Hat). I realize I can run memtest86 from boot to diagnose bad ram. But are there are any solutions to monitor ram while the system is still running. I'm sort of thinking a daemon that writes and reads back from random unused memory. Anybody seen something like this before?

• How do I configure an interface to have *both* a DHCP address and a static address in Ubuntu?

  In a lab setup, I want eth0 on a Ubuntu server box to get a DHCP address for talking to the outside world, and I also want to assign it a static 10.x.y.z address for talking to other boxes on the local network that have 10.x.y.z addresses. I want to do this by editing /etc/network/interfaces. The man page for /etc/network/interfaces is modeled after "here's a bunch of examples, I hope you can figure out the actual rules on your own". I don't see a way to give one interface two addresses using two different methods (static and dhcp), and initial fumbling didn't produce useful results.

• Laptop LCD sometimes stops working on reboot. Please help.

  I have a Gateway P-6831FX Laptop with Vista Ultimate. The Laptop LCD will sometimes not come on after I reboot the computer. I don't even close the lid and it happens. It isn't dim, it doesn't come on at all. No posting of CMOS (BIOS), nothing. Please note... this happens sometimes, not every time. Frustrating! When plugged into an external monitor, which works fine, Vista display properties can't even "sense" the laptop LCD. I try to enable the laptop LCD for dual display, turning on the laptop LCD, and it does nothing. It's like the laptop LCD is not even there. Manually taking a magnet in my hand to the laptop lid sensing switch (the sensor that turns off display/sleep mode when you close lid), sometimes causes the LCD backlight to "turn on" but not display any images. By "turn on" I mean I can see the screen backlight turn on to a 'dark gray' screen instead of pitch black. Subsequent reboot the laptop display is not working again! Here are the facts: Only happens at random and only after a reboot. Waking from Sleep mode isn't a problem. Pressing F4 function key for dual display does nothing when this happens. Closing lid doesn't seem to be related. (unless it is only after reboot.) using external magnet from laptop screen sensor sometimes triggers backlight to turn on but reboot back to square one with no LCD display. an external display always works fine. I have taken apart LCD, checked all wires and ribbons for loose connections or damage. I have replaced the Inverter. It doesn't seem to be heat related as I can put in sleep mode and resume fine when very hot. (external monitor works fine too). Sometimes the screen works fine as if there is not a problem at all. Even after a reboot... This is random. Any ideas out there? If it is a bad part... which one? The LCD seems to be fine. What are the odds of 2 bad inverters? The backlight is fine. The LCD wires/ribbons seem to be fine. I am at a loss. No warranty left and Gateway tech support is clueless. Thanks for any feedback that might help.

• Immutable hard links on ext3/4?

  In my research on file versioning at the fs level, snapshotting, and related ideas, I took a look at hard-links and exactly what they are and how they behave. Using rsync you can get a pretty slick poor man's snapshotting system up and running on file systems that don't natively support it. But, can you get immutable hard links on ext3/4 or any other file systems for that matter? My definition for immutable hard link is: A hard link which, when changed on one location, becomes a regular copy and no longer a hard link. I would like this because it would enable snapshotting use of the source data to link against instead of a copy of the data (in the case of the rsync snapshotting technique). I have gigabytes of data that can't be duplicated due to space restrictions but I have enough room if I can intelligently snapshot individual changed files with the rest linked to the source not a copy. Given all that, is there some other technique, feature or technology I'm really looking for?

• Unable to use pbcopy while in tmux session

  Running tmux 1.4 installed from ports on snow-leopard I am unable to use the built in OSX pbcopy command. I also can't understand why tmux would mess with shell redirection. Anybody have any clues?

• OpenJDK vs. Sun Java6 on Ubuntu

  Due to past (bad) experience resulting from the GCJ stuff being provided by default on certain distributions, I've always traditionally installed the official Sun Java package on servers. On Ubuntu it's been easy but now OpenJDK is a preferred option and easier to install... I wonder: is there any reason not to use it instead? As far as I understand it's the open source version of the Sun JDK.

I just wanted to double check (and provide a top Google result for people in the future that might have the same issue) that this was a false positive and can be safely right-click ignored.

• Windows 7 Installation Folder: x86, x64 and another info

The bad part is that the downloaded iso files don't have clear names, so I cannot to know wich version is each file. I can check the files inside the iso using 7-Zip, by example. Then, reading the files and folders in the installation disk, how can I tell what Windows version and platform the installation refers to?

• "setpci: command not found" in CentOS

  I'm trying to configure my Mac Mini running CentOS 5.5 to start automatically when power is restored after a power loss. I understand the following command has to be executed: setpci -s 0:1f.0 0xa4.b=0 When I run that command on my machine though I get bash: setpci: command not found. Is there a package I need to install via yum or something? I'm not seeing a clear answer via Google and I looked at the man page for setpci and it doesn't mention anything. Also, does this command need to be run every time the machine starts or just once?

• Multiple VLANs, multiple subnets, single DHCP server?

  Hey guys! At my job we are prepping to transition from multiple LANs connected over slow VPN connections to a single MAN connected over fiber, and I've got a few questions. First of all, we are planning on making each physical site its own VLAN, but we would like to have a single DHCP server at the data center hand out IPs to each VLAN. We've pretty much got the VLAN tagging structure all worked out, but we would like to have our single DHCP server assign different subnets of IPs to each VLAN. For instance, VLAN 2 gets 10.0.2.x through 10.0.4.x, VLAN 3 gets 10.0.5.x through 10.0.7.x etc. We are an Active Directory based shop and we have a Server 2003 box handling DHCP (though we aren't averse to upgrading it to server 2008.) Is this feasible, or am I pipe-dreaming?

  Hi, I am trying to get started with Linux. There are number of books (many of which are just man pages), some of them provide good overview so I can dig deeper online then. What I would like is to find number of screencasts that would cover basics of Linux commands, server administration, commonly performed tasks etc (no GUI, only terminal).
