  • Implication of variable context switching time

    - by Rob
Hi, I know that constant switching time of the Linux scheduler was a big achievement. I was just asking myself the question what would be the implication of a non-constant switching time. The only obvious reason I can think of is real-time systems where we have to meet deadlines. There it is obviously no ideal if the switching time is "random". Are there any other good reasons that favour constant switching times? Many thanks, Rob

  • Why is setuid ignored on directories?

    - by Blacklight Shining
On Linux systems, you can successfully chmod u+s $some_directory, but instead of forcing the ownership of new subdirectories and files to be the owner of the containing directory (and setting subdirectories u+s as well) as you might expect, the system just ignores the setuid bit. Subdirectories and files continue to inherit the UIDs of their creating processes, and subdirectories are not setuid by default. Why is setuid ignored on directories, and how can I get the system to recognize it?

  • Test Environment configuration Management

    - by TechTestDude
I am after a solution which will enable me to enter all my hardware/software elements (sort of like resource management), create a set of 'test environments' and assign hardware and software to that test environment for a given period. The idea is so that everyone can see and update what they need in any given environment to meet their project needs. Does anyone know of any systems out there which can achieve this? Vendor recommendations are welcome, but please call out your interest in it.

  • Reg Query Issues

    - by Fitz
I have a batch script that does reporting on our systems and part of it queries the registry for information. The script fails to get the key's value when its ran by the system, but whenever I run the script myself, it works perfectly the command: REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion" /v PatternStringFormatted > current1.tmp should return: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\CurrentVersion PatternStringFormatted REG_SZ 6.645.00 This script is failing on a Server 2008 R2 machine, but runs fine on Server 2003 R2 machines.

  • Is VirtualBox really slow compared to the host OS? (for Ruby development)

    - by dan
I have VirtualBox running Ubuntu as a guest environment on my Macbook Pro running Leopard OS X 10.5. I timed the same batch of Ruby on Rails unit tests on both systems. The difference seems to be quite big. The same suite of Ruby unit tests that take 13.4 seconds in the native OS X, take 82 seconds to run in VirtualBox Ubuntu. Are other people doing the same kind of development noticing the same differences?

  • Hide Spotify from Windows 7 Task Bar

    - by Tomas Lycken
When Spotify is running, it shows a little icon in the activity field. On most operative systems, closing the Spotify window minimizes the player to the activity window, freeing up space in the task bar - but not in Windows 7, it seems. I think it's a little uneccessary to have two icons in almost the same place that does almost the same thing. Is there anyway to hide a program icon from the task bar, in this case specifically Spotify?

  • Backup Xen domU machines while running.

    - by Jonathan Hawkes
The host machine is running CentOS 5.3 and using LVM to create Logical Volumes (LVs) and to allow live snapshots to be taken of those LVs. My thought was to store all of the image files for the Xen underpriviledged domains (domU) in a single LV and periodically take a snapshot of that LV and copy the disk images out of the snapshot in order to make a live backup of these systems. Is this doable? Is there a better way? Thanks!

Is anyone aware of any application (computation + data) that I can download to test an in-house grid middleware that will run on a local cluster. I hope to compare the performance with other available grid systems.

  • What speed are Wi-Fi management and control frames sent at?

    - by Bryce Thomas
There are a bunch of different 802.11 Wi-Fi standards, e.g. 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n etc. that all support different speeds. Wi-Fi frames are generally categorised as one of the following: Data frames - carry the actual application data Control frames - coordinate when its safe to send/reduce collisions Management frames - handle connection discovery/setup/tear down (e.g. AP discovery, association, disassociation) My question is about whether all these frames, and specifically management frames, are transmitted at the fastest supported speed available, or whether certain classes of frames are transmitted at some lowest common denominator speed. I have noticed that when I put an 802.11b/g only device into monitor mode and capture traffic over the air, I still see management frames (e.g. association/disassociation) being transmitted between my phone and AP which are both 802.11n, even though 802.11n has a higher transfer rate. So I am imagining one of two possibilities: My 802.11n phone/AP had to negotiate a slower speed for some reason and that's why I can see their frames on my 802.11b/g monitoring device. Management frames (and perhaps control frames also?) are sent at a lower speed, and it's only data frames that are transmitted faster with newer 802.11 standards. The reason I would like to know which one of these two possibilities (or perhaps a third possibility) is the case is that I want to capture management frames, and need to know whether using an 802.11b/g card is going to lead to me missing some frames sent at higher speeds than the monitoring card can observe. If management frames are indeed sent at a slower rate, then it's all good. If I just happen to be seeing the management frames because my phone/AP have negotiated a slower rate though, then I need to reconsider what card I use for packet capture.

  • Monitor utilities

    - by Adam Davis
I'm a big fan of good monitor usage, but only currently use a few utilities to help me attain display nirvana across several systems and monitors. Part of this is due to not knowing what's available. Please list one monitor utility that you use and what it does for you per answer, and avoid duplicates - comment on and vote up the existing answers rather than adding a duplicate. Also, if there are existing questions that delve more specifically into one area of monitor utilities link that in a separate answer. -Adam

  • tmux won't run as non root user?

    - by bumbling fool
If I run tmux as root, it runs normally and fully functional. I created a couple users, and it will not run as any of the users. create session failed: : No such file or directory I checked the outside $TERM is xterm and inside $TERM is screen as FAQs suggest that is most common cause of problems. I've used tmux regularly on many different systems, but I on this VPS I can't figure out what's up... A little help, please? EDIT: strace output

  • Running SEP scans with the SYSTEM account

    - by Eric
I need to run Symantec Endpoint Protection scans on Windows 7 systems using the SYSTEM account. I know that I can run DoScan.exe to manually run a scan, and this works fine using a regular user account. Unfortunately, when I try to run DoScan as SYSTEM, the application exits immediately without running a scan. Is there a way that I can get this to work, or another application besides DoScan.exe that I should be using?

  • How can I run Gnome or KDE locally in Cygwin?

    - by John Peter Thompson Garcés
Apparently it is possible to do this using cygwin ports, as can be seen in screenshots. I followed this how-to to get apt-cygports set up, and I used it to install gnome-session. This how-to supposedly gives the commands needed to run Gnome or KDE, but whenever I try to run Gnome, a blank X-window pops up and then quickly disappears. Here is the terminal output: $ startx /usr/bin/dbus-launch gnome-session xauth: file /home/jpthomps/.serverauth.4168 does not exist Welcome to the XWin X Server Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project Release: 1.10.3.0 OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 [Windows NT 6.1 build 7601] (WoW64) Package: version 1.10.3-12 built 2011-08-22 XWin was started with the following command line: /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /home/jpthomps/.serverauth.4168 (II) xorg.conf is not supported (II) See http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html for more information LoadPreferences: /home/jpthomps/.XWinrc not found LoadPreferences: Loading /etc/X11/system.XWinrc LoadPreferences: Done parsing the configuration file... winDetectSupportedEngines - DirectDraw installed, allowing ShadowDD winDetectSupportedEngines - Windows NT, allowing PrimaryDD winDetectSupportedEngines - DirectDraw4 installed, allowing ShadowDDNL winDetectSupportedEngines - Returning, supported engines 0000001f winSetEngine - Using Shadow DirectDraw NonLocking winScreenInit - Using Windows display depth of 32 bits per pixel winFinishScreenInitFB - Masks: 00ff0000 0000ff00 000000ff Screen 0 added at virtual desktop coordinate (0,0). • Why do Linux networks use Samba?

    - by Dougal
The "file and printer sharing" feature of Linux distros is mostly Samba. Samba is an interpretation of Microsoft's network filesystem. Cross-OS compatibility is important of course but why are Linux systems defaulting to this Microsoft technology? Is Microsoft's network filesystem so good? Samba clearly works very well and I'm not "dissing" it. Or, to rephrase the question, "What would be a Linux-native way to share files and printers across a network?"
