• 500 error using lighttpd, fastcgi and PHP on file upload

  I have a server running lighttpd with fastcgi, and it appears to be working correctly. However when I try to upload a file using a form, I get a 500 Internal server error, along with the following in the logs: 2012-03-23 18:25:09: (mod_fastcgi.c.2566) unexpected end-of-file (perhaps the fastcgi process died): pid: 2755 socket: unix:/tmp/php-fastcgi-1.socket-0 2012-03-23 18:25:09: (mod_fastcgi.c.3354) response not received, request sent: 50437 on socket: unix:/tmp/php-fastcgi-1.socket-0 for /index.php?url=brand/manager, closing connection I've been looking around for a long while now trying to find a solution to the issue, but nothing I'm trying is working. My current fastcgi conf looks as follows: server.modules += ( "mod_fastcgi" ) fastcgi.server = ( ".php" => (( "socket" => "/tmp/php-fastcgi-1.socket", "bin-path" => "/usr/bin/php-cgi", "allow-x-send-file" => "enable", "max-procs" => 1, "broken-scriptfilename" => "enable" )) ) If anyone could suggest if there is anything wrong in the configuration it would be greatly appreciated, or any suggestion as to what I might do? • perl multiple tasks problem

  I have finished my earlier multithreaded program that uses perl threads and it works on my system. The problem is that on some systems that it needs to run on, thread support is not compiled into perl and I cannot install additional packages. I therefore need to use something other than threads, and I am moving my code to using fork(). This works on my windows system in starting the subtasks. A few problems: How to determine when the child process exits? I created new threads when the thread count was below a certain value, I need to keep track of how many threads are running. For processes, how do I know when one exits so I can keep track of how many exist at the time, incrementing a counter when one is created and decrementing when one exits? Is file I/O using handles obtained with OPEN when opened by the parent process safe in the child process? I need to append to a file for each of the child processes, is this safe on unix as well. Is there any alternative to fork and threads? I tried use Parallel::ForkManager, but that isn't installed on my system (use Parallel::ForkManager; gave an error) and I absolutely require that my perl script work on all unix/windows systems without installing any additional modules.

• Socket Read In Multi-Threaded Application Returns Zero Bytes or EINTR (104)

  Hi. Am a c-coder for a while now - neither a newbie nor an expert. Now, I have a certain daemoned application in C on a PPC Linux. I use PHP's socket_connect as a client to connect to this service locally. The server uses epoll for multiplexing connections via a Unix socket. A user submitted string is parsed for certain characters/words using strstr() and if found, spawns 4 joinable threads to different websites simultaneously. I use socket, connect, write and read, to interact with the said webservers via TCP on their port 80 in each thread. All connections and writes seems successful. Reads to the webserver sockets fail however, with either (A) all 3 threads seem to hang, and only one thread returns -1 and errno is set to 104. The responding thread takes like 10 minutes - an eternity long:-(. *I read somewhere that the 104 (is EINTR?), which in the network context suggests that ...'the connection was reset by peer'; or (B) 0 bytes from 3 threads, and only 1 of the 4 threads actually returns some data. Isn't the socket read/write thread-safe? I use thread-safe (and reentrant) libc functions such as strtok_r, gethostbyname_r, etc. *I doubt that the said webhosts are actually resetting the connection, because when I run a single-threaded standalone (everything else equal) all things works perfectly right, but of course in series not parallel. There's a second problem too (oops), I can't write back to the client who connect to my epoll-ed Unix socket. My daemon application will hang and hog CPU 100% for ever. Yet nothing is written to the clients end. Am sure the client (a very typical PHP socket application) hasn't closed the connection whenever this is happening - no error(s) detected either. Any ideas? I cannot figure-out whatever is wrong even with Valgrind, GDB or much logging. Kindly help where you can.

• PHP gettext on Windows

  There's some tutorials out there for gettext (w/ Poedit)... unfortunately, it's mostly for a UNIX environment. And even more unfortunate is that I am running my WAMP server on Windows XP (but I am developing for a UNIX environment) and none of the tutorials can get gettext working properly for me. From the man page (http://us3.php.net/manual/en/book.gettext.php), it appears that it's a different process on a Windows environment. I've tried out some of the solutions in the comments but I still can't get it to work! Please, I've spent many hours on this, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to get this thing to work! (and I'm sure there are others out there who share my frustration). So far with my setup, I'm only getting output "Hello World!" whereas I should be getting the translated string. • Scapy install issues. Nothing seems to actually be installed?

  I have an apple computer running Leopard with python 2.6. I downloaded the latest version of scapy and ran "python setup.py install". All went according to plan. Now, when I try to run it in interactive mode by just typing "scapy", it throws a bunch of errors. What gives! Just in case, here is the FULL error message.. INFO: Can't import python gnuplot wrapper . Won't be able to plot. INFO: Can't import PyX. Won't be able to use psdump() or pdfdump(). • What would it take to get auto-revert-mode to actually work in my dired buffer?

  Apparently auto-revert-mode is supposed to work in dired buffers. I had never heard of this, but the doc says it works. Then I read a little more and found some fine print: Auto-reverting Dired buffers currently works on GNU or Unix style operating systems. It may not work satisfactorily on some other systems. ...and... [dired buffers] do not auto-revert when information about a particular file changes (e.g. when the size changes) or when inserted subdirectories change. To be sure that all listed information is up to date, you have to manually revert using g, even if auto-reverting is enabled in the Dired buffer. source Well, uh, gee.... That doesn't sound like autorevert to me. What would it take to get auto-revert for dired to actually work? Even on (gasp) non-Unix operating systems. Could I just modify auto-revert-handler to call revert-buffer on dired buffers?

• lightweight/portable VCS for server-hopping DBA?

  I'm looking for a VCS that'll help me keep all of my work scripts in-sync. Requirements: Portable (as in flash drive, not code-level) Run on Windows XP and Server 2003+ No installation dependencies (Cygwin, perl, Python) I use Mercurial on my work machine for version control of the various T-SQL, ksh, perl, and CMD/BAT scripts that I maintain as a MS SQL Server DBA and Unix sysadmin. So far, hg has worked for my AIX boxes- I mount my home directory as I login, and deal with the repo as if it were local. I haven't been able to find a similar solution for the Windows machines I use. Most of them I do not have Local Admin rights; even if I did, I'd rather not install (and maintain) Python + Mercurial on all of them. I can't get to my home directory on them remotely, which leaves a client running on each machine as the only option. Bonus points for an answer that would let me use a single repo for both the Windows and Unix machines. :) I'm running WinXP, with heavy use of Cygwin and a CrunchBang VM.

• opengl + glew in Eclipse (for windows)

  I'm trying to get glew to work under eclipse (mingw) in windows. Seems as if it is extremely unusual not to use Visual Studio in this context. The install instructions for glew is simply "use the project file in build/vc6/"... The glew readme also writes: "If you wish to build GLEW from scratch (update the extension data from the net or add your own extension information), you need a Unix environment (including wget, perl, and GNU make). The extension data is regenerated from the top level source directory with: make extensions" In order to get glew to work in eclipse and windows I have to compile it in a unix environment? Is there no other way? Sure, it would probably be a learning experience to pull that off (if I were to succeed) but I feel that my time is best spent actually working on my project. And even if I did manage to crosscompile everything, would it work in anything but Visual Studio? Is the whole thing unfeasible and the best solution is to install Visual Studio? Google haven't been of much help, I feel like I am the only one that has ever attempted to do this (is there a good reason this?).

• What's the next steps for moving from appengine to full django?

  Hey guys, I'm super new to programming and I've been using appengine to help me learn python and general coding. I'm getting better quickly and I'm loving it all the way :) Appengine was awesome for allowing me to just dive into writing my app and getting something live that works (see http://www.7bks.com/). But I'm realising that the longer I continue to learn on appengine the more I'm constraining myself and locking myself into a single system. I'd like to move to developing on full django (since django looks super cool!). What are my next steps? To give you a feel for my level of knowledge: I'm not a unix user I'm not familiar with command line controls (I still use appengine/python completely via the appengine SDK) I've never programmed in anything other than python, anywhere other than appengine I know the word SQL, but don't know what MySQL is really or how to use it. So, specifically: What are the skills I need to learn to get up and running with full django/python? If I'm going to host somewhere else I suppose I'll need to learn some sysadmin type skills (maybe even unix?). Is there anywhere that offers easy hosting (like appengine) but that supports django? I hear such great things about heroku I'm considering switching to RoR and going there I appreciate that I'm likely not quite ready to move away from appengine just yet but I'm a fiercely passionate learner (http://www.7bks.com/blog/179001) and would love it if I knew all the steps I needed to learn so I could set about learning them. At the moment, I don't even know what the steps are I need to learn! Thank you very much. Sorry this isn't a specific programming question but I've looked around and haven't found a good how-to for someone of my level of experience and I think others would appreciate a good roadmap for the things we need to learn to get up and running. • Mgmt wants to re-title my position: Any help...? [closed]

  Management here wants to re-title my position, since I'm doing quite a bit of different work than was originally planned. They want my input. After a quick glance over my skill set and job duties, what would we need to describe this position as? I'll just list things I'm at least proficient in, I will not list things I have a passing knowledge of. About me : ~10 years software development. Languages : C, C++, Perl, PHP, C#, TCL, Unix shell scripting, SQL (TSQL, PLSQL) Systems : MS-Dos, Windows 3.1 to 7 for client, NT 4 to 2008 for server, OS/2, IBM MVS & z/OS, Linux ( multiple distros), AIX Current position: I do all sorts of in-house software. The range is single user apps to large systems spanning multiple OS's. One of the larger projects I've designed and coded is about 100k lines of C#, and a database where I have been the sole designer and maintainer. I have near total freedom to design as I see fit, restraints are usually budgetary. Skills required to replace me in my current role: Windows and Unix admin, Database design, .NET up to 3.5 (C#, ASP.NET), C++, Perl, good skills in designing large and efficient data processing systems. Given this small level of information what would you see this as being titled? (is more information required to render a decision?)

• PC to Macbook Pro Transition - Getting (re)started?

  I'm in my second computer science course right now. I've enjoyed programming so far, but really have just scraped my way by. I've not done much programming outside of required class work. For similar reasons, I never really invested in downloading/learning software to help me program (IDE's, editors, compilers, etc). I know it sounds tedious, but my current setup is: notepad++ for coding; Filezilla to transfer .cpp & .h files to school's aludra/unix and compiling; unix tells me where my bugs are and I go back to notepad++ to debug; repeat until done. This isn't fun - and I know it could be easier. But I put it off knowing that I was soon going to switch to a Mac. And, tomorrow, I'm switching. So... How should I set up my Macbook for the best programming experience? What IDEs and editors and debuggers and so on should I download? How will Mac programming differ from PC? I'm open to all ideas and comments, even the most basic. (Background - I'm learning/programming in C++ right now. Next semester, my classes switch to Java. I'm also going to take a class in web development, with HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP. My new laptop will be a late 2009 Macbook Pro with Leopard, or maybe Snow Leopard. Free would be preferrable for all programs.) Thank you all.

  Hi, I'm trying to solve exercise from K&R, it's about reading directories.This task is system dependent because it uses system calls.In the book example authors say that their example is written for Version 7 and System V UNIX systems and that they used the directory information in the header < sys/dir.h,which looks like this: #ifndef DIRSIZ #define DIRSIZ 14 #endif struct direct { /* directory entry */ ino_t d_ino; /* inode number */ char d_name[DIRSIZ]; /* long name does not have '\0' */ }; On this system they use 'struct direct' combined with 'read' function to retrieve a directory entry, which consist of file name and inode number. ..... struct direct dirbuf; /* local directory structure */ while(read(dp->fd, (char *) &dirbuf, sizeof(dirbuf) == sizeof(dirbuf) { ..... } ..... I suppose this works fine on UNIX and Linux systems, but what I want to do is modify this so it works on Windows XP. Is there some structure in Windows like 'struct direct' so I can use it with 'read' function and if there is what is the header name where it is defined? Or maybe Windows requires completely different approach?

  I have searched through every possible answer on SO for a solution, but nothing has worked. I am basically creating an excel file from a database and sending the results to the response stream using EPPlus(OpenXML). The following code gives me an error when trying to open my generated excel sheet "[report].xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'." It will open fine the first time, but the second time it's locked. • Is the PowerPC (G4) architecture better than Intel x86 architecture for certain types of application

  I have a PowerMac G4 from around the year 2000. It's a serviceable Unix machine but I don't do much with it since I have plenty of Pentium 4 machines around with Linux on them. I was wondering if the PowerPC based machine is capable of handling certain tasks faster or "better" than Intel based machines, or is it just another computer to use. I have OSX 10.4 Tiger for it, and I don't mind installing Yellow Dog Linux or UbuntuPPC if that will make it more useable.

• Why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process?

  Right now I'm trying to Run/Debung my app on VisualStudio, but it cannot create it because the las instance of the app.vshost.exe is still running. Then, by using the Task Manager i'm trying to kill it, but it just remains there with no signal of activity. Beyond that particular case (maybe a VS bug), i'm very curious about the technical reasons why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process??? Can, an enlighted OS related developer, please try to explain? (And please don't start a Unix/Linux/Mac battle against Windows)
