What do Embedded Software Developers do on a day to day basis?

Edit: I am not asking how to program embedded systems. I am asking how it is done in a practical business setting. I have searched for hours for information on what software developers actually do. More specifically, what coding challenges would one experience daily (e.g. code examples (although obviously not too large), specifics)? I am interested in Linux based embedded systems mainly, but any software development would be helpful (in the C/C++/Assembly areas). Also, regarding this, a distinction between junior, intermediate and senior developers would be helpful. Also, what is the best place to prepare for such things before getting a job for the first time?

IE9 Preview disables CLR DEVPATH feature

(This is not related to IKVM.NET, but since I spent several hours tracking this down, I thought I'd write it up here in the hope anyone else struggling with this will find it.) One of the lesser known (development) features of the CLR is the ability to override the regular Fusion assembly loading rules by setting the DEVPATH environment variable (and adding an entry to the machine.config to enable this). 1) I have quite a lot of interest in game programming and I (to my thought) am quite good at programming skills, I have developed some console based animations and text based animation games (like copter-it, snake, and a music visualization), should I invest in game programming? I have 2 years at college left. 2) If I am to pursue a career in game programming, and I select to go only with c++ and DirectX, is it enough? is assembly language necessary? 3) is Visual C++ or MFC dead? should I invest in it or not? 4) I am unable to find any reference book for Visual C++ 2008 or later (just like C++ the complete reference book) I need a book that covers the basic fundamentals and covers the most of the libraries etc.

Running the Ubuntu Kernel and OS on custom processor

This is hardly a theoretical question as many have done this, albeit there's very little information on the underlying processes. I'm developing a custom MIPS-based processor on which I would like to run ubuntu. I'm quite baffled as to what to do next after you've designed the instruction set and the computer architecture itself. I need to be able to run a kernel and OS but how does it all tie in? At the moment I'm researching into designing a compiler for the linux kernel to generate the appropriate assembly language. Is that a good way to go? What do I need to do after that?

Div not floating left

Can't seem to get this div to move to the left. Using wordpress. I tried a lot of things but am at a loss. Suckerfish Menu Not Working. Nested UL not displaying block

I'm going out of my mind with this one. I'm trying to build a suckerfish css drop down menu. I have the first level working ok but I can't get the nested ul (under the Glossary tab) to display in block format and show my a background color. I've been at this for three days and I'm about to go crazy. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. Very Unusual Margin Appears Always in Internet Explorer [CSS]

Only in Internet Explorer does this occur: I'm getting an additional margin (of 19 pixels) below a fieldset and I can't seem to see why, whatever I try! Try it for yourself, take a look at http://theshrop.com/d/call_us_or_call_in.php. To aid I've added a grid and some background colours. The fieldset should have a 1.125em bottom margin and it does in Safari, Firefox etc. It has an extra 19 pixels in Internet Explorer? Hi, I apologize if my question is too stupid. I want to run from a sandboxed application a method from a full trusted assembly. But when trying to do so, as described in C# 4.0 in a Nutshell: The Definitive Reference, Fourth Edition, Chapter 20, each time I call Permission.Assert, an InvalidOperationException "Cannot perform CAS Asserts in Security Transparent methods" is thrown. So how is it possible to turn off transparency to be able to use CAS Asserts?

Doing TDD Silverlight 4 RC using Visual Studio 2010 RC

First I am glad to see better TDD support in VS2010. Support for generating code stubs from my tests is ok - not as good as more mature TDD plug-ins but a good start. I am looking for some best Silverlight 4.0 TDD practices. First Question: Anyone have links, recommendations? I know the new Silverlight Unit Test capabilities are much better (Jeff Wilcox's Mix Presentation). What I am focusing on right now is using TDD to develop pure Silverlight 4.0 Class Library projects - projects without a Silverlight UI project. I've been able to get it to work but not as cleanly as it should be. I can create an Empty VS project. Add A Silverlight 4 Class Library Project. Add a TestProject (not a silverlight Unit Test Project but a plain Test Project). Add a simple test in the Test Project such as: namespace Calculator.Test { [TestClass] public class CalculatorTests { [TestMethod] public void CalulatorAddTest() { Calc c = new Calc(); int expected = 10; int actual = c.Add(6, 4); Assert.AreEqual<int>(expected, actual); } } } Using the new Generate Type and Method from Test feature it will generate the following code in the Silverlight Project: namespace Calculator { public class Calc { public int Add(int p, int p_2) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } } When I run the tests the first time it says the target assembly is Silverlight and not able to run test - Not exact text but the same general idea. When I change the implementation to: namespace Calculator { public class Calc { public int Add(int p, int p_2) { return p + p_2; } } } and re-run the test, it works fine and the test goes green. It also works for all other TDD code I generate after. I also get a warning Mark in the Test Project's reference to the Calculator Silverlight Class Library Assembly. Second Question: Any comments ideas if this just a bug in VS2010 RC or is Silverlight Class Library TDD not really supported. I have not created a Silverlight UI project or changed and build or debug settings so I have no idea what is hosting the silverlight DLL. Finally, some of the Silverlight Class Libraries I need to write will provide functionality that requires elevated Out-Of-Browser rights. Based on the above, it looks like I can use TDD Test Projects against regular Silverlight 4.0 Class Libraries, but I have no idea how I can TDD the elevated OOB functionality without also creating the UI component that gets installed. The UI piece is not really needed for the Library development and gets in the way of what I actually want to TDD. I know I can (and will) mock some of that functionality but at some point I will also need the real thing in my tests. Third Question: Any ideas how to TDD Silverlight 4.0 Class Library project that requires OOB elevated rights? Thanks!

WpfToolkit DataGrid does not work in Windows Phone 7

I am trying to use WpfToolkit DataGrid in Windows Phone 7 project (Silverligt 4) and it's not working. VS 2010 Profiling Problem with Signed Assemblies

I have a website that uses AjaxControlToolkit.dll and Log4Net.dll; When I try to run the performance profiling tool in VS 2010 on it it gives me the following warnings "AjaxControlToolkit.dll is signed and instrumenting it will invalidate its signature. If you proceed without a post-instrument event to re-sign the binary it may not load correctly". Now, if I choose the option to continue without re-signing the profiling starts but the assembly doesn't load and gives an ASP.NET exception.

Specify the search path for DllImport in .NET

Is there a way to specify the paths to be searched for a given assembly that is imported with DllImport? [DllImport("MyDll.dll")] static extern void Func(); This will search for the dll in the app dir and in the PATH environment variable. But at times the dll will be placed elsewhere. Can this information be specified in app.config or manifest file to avoid dynamic loading and dynamic invocation?

I am trying to interpret the meaning of "mscorwks.dll!StrongNameErrorInfo+0x7688". I guess it means, that the assembly loaded by the mscorworks.dll has no StrongName? If yes, does this have any negative impact for a web application? Is it safe to assume that the thread count of 107 means, that web application has needed a maximum of 107 concurrent threads to handle incoming requests?

Hi I just opened up a project I done in MVC a while back, fired right up I looked at in the browser and now all the sudden it just wont find the [HttpPost] & [HttpPostAttribute]. What can be the problem? errormessage The type or namespace name 'HttpPost' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
