• Should I start MCPD training now or wait for new exams?

  i apologize if this question has been asked before, or if this is the wrong place to put it. I'm beginning my study track for the MCPD certification in Web Development. However, Microsoft plans to retire this certification on July 31st of 2013, along with two of the necessary tests to receive the certification. On MS's site, I can't find a newer certification path to take - I imagine that Microsoft will release new certification paths and new tests for their new software, but I don't know when that will happen. I don't really know anything about Microsoft's process, as this is the first Microsoft certification I'll be studying for. The bottom line is this - I don't want to lose six months waiting for a new test to appear that won't expire, but I don't want to rush to get a certification that will be invalid in six months (or have to reset any progress due to new study material). To those with experience in affairs like this - what is the best course to take, and can I maximize the time I have now (not wait for new testing material)? Is there any way to find material for the new tests that Microsoft will be rolling out? Thank you for your patience. If this is the wrong place to put this question, I would like to request that it be moved to the correct StackExchange site instead of being closed. Thanks for your help!

• Mapping dynamic buffers in Direct3D11 in Windows Store apps

  I'm trying to make instanced geometry in Direct3D11, and the ID3D11DeviceContext1->Map() call is failing with the very helpful error of "Invalid Parameter" when I'm attempting to update the instance buffer. The buffer is declared as a member variable: Microsoft::WRL::ComPtr<ID3D11Buffer> m_instanceBuffer; Then I create it (which succeeds): D3D11_BUFFER_DESC instanceDesc; ZeroMemory(&instanceDesc, sizeof(D3D11_BUFFER_DESC)); instanceDesc.Usage = D3D11_USAGE_DYNAMIC; instanceDesc.ByteWidth = sizeof(InstanceData) * MAX_INSTANCE_COUNT; instanceDesc.BindFlags = D3D11_BIND_VERTEX_BUFFER; instanceDesc.CPUAccessFlags = D3D11_CPU_ACCESS_WRITE; instanceDesc.MiscFlags = 0; instanceDesc.StructureByteStride = 0; DX::ThrowIfFailed(d3dDevice->CreateBuffer(&instanceDesc, NULL, &m_instanceBuffer)); However, when I try to map it: D3D11_MAPPED_SUBRESOURCE inst; DX::ThrowIfFailed(d3dContext->Map(m_instanceBuffer.Get(), 0, D3D11_MAP_WRITE, 0, &inst)); The map call fails with E_INVALIDARG. Nothing is NULL incorrectly, and this being one of my first D3D apps I'm currently stumped on what to do next to track it down. I'm thinking I must be creating the buffer incorrectly, but I can't see how. Any input would be appreciated.

• My laptop with Linux/ Ubuntu isn't working

  I have a dell laptop with ubuntu linux. A day I tried to start it up and a black screen just appeared that says: GNU GRUB version1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3 (and these clickable options:) -Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic -Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode) -Memory test (memtest86+) -Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) When I click the first one, a bunch of text appears like: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/8396a225... failed: invalid argument mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init No init found. Try passing init= bootarg Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) (initramfs) When I enter 'help' a bunch more incomprehensible text appears. Whenever I press the enter key all that pops up is (intetramfs) If anyone can make rhyme or reason out of this please, please help me out so it can boot up normally and i can be set. If there's some kind of special code I have to type in or something I know nothing about computers.

• C Programming matrix

  In this program the user enters the # of columns of the matrix and then the entries of the matrix. So, for example, if the user enters 2 for column # and 1 2 3 4 for entries then the program develops a 2 by 2 matrix with 1 2 3 4 as entries. My program works perfectly in such a case. However, if the user for example had only entered 1 2 3 then my program makes a matrix with garbage values. I would like the program in such a case to exit the program. • SQL SERVER – Using RAND() in User Defined Functions (UDF)

  Here is the question I received in email. “Pinal, I am writing a function where we need to generate random password. While writing T-SQL I faced following issue. Everytime I tried to use RAND() function in my User Defined Function I am getting following error: Msg 443, Level 16, State 1, Procedure RandFn, Line 7 Invalid use of a side-effecting operator ‘rand’ within a function. Here is the simplified T-SQL code of the function which I am using: CREATE FUNCTION RandFn() RETURNS INT AS BEGIN DECLARE @rndValue INT SET @rndValue = RAND() RETURN @rndValue END GO I must use UDF so is there any workaround to use RAND function in UDF.” Here is the workaround how RAND() can be used in UDF. The scope of the blog post is not to discuss the advantages or disadvantages of the function or random function here but just to show how RAND() function can be used in UDF. RAND() function is directly not allowed to use in the UDF so we have to find alternate way to use the same function. This can be achieved by creating a VIEW which is using RAND() function and use the same VIEW in the UDF. Here is the step by step instructions. Create a VIEW using RAND function. CREATE VIEW rndView AS SELECT RAND() rndResult GO Create a UDF using the same VIEW. CREATE FUNCTION RandFn() RETURNS DECIMAL(18,18) AS BEGIN DECLARE @rndValue DECIMAL(18,18) SELECT @rndValue = rndResult FROM rndView RETURN @rndValue END GO Now execute the UDF and it will just work fine and return random result. SELECT dbo.RandFn() GO In T-SQL world, I have noticed that there are more than one solution to every problem. Is there any better solution to this question? • Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver for Radeon HD 7290?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with AMD Radeon HD 7290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... Update: OK. Another attempt. I have a fresh Ubuntu 12.10. All updates done. downloaded Catalyst 12.11 beta drivers and decided to create a package. • XSF-FO intellisense and national languages with Apache FOP

  Some time ago I showed how to get an intellisense and how to configure the FO.NET to acquire national characters inside the generated pdf files. Due to the limitations that I mensioned in my previous post, I started playing with the Apache FOP. In this post I want to show, how to acquire the same result as I showed in the two posts related to FO.NET.   Intellisense   To get the intellisense from the XSL-FO templates set the xsi:schemaLocation the same way I showed it in this post. The only diffrence to FO.NET is that, during generating the document by the code I showed last time we will get an exception:   org.apache.fop.fo.ValidationException: Invalid property encountered on "fo:root": xsi:schemaLocation (See position 6:11)   Fortunatelly there is a very easy way to resolve this without removing the entire attribute along with the intellisense. Add to the FopFactory the ignoreNamespace by:   FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); fopFactory.ignoreNamespace(http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance);   Notice that, the url specified in this method this is a namespace for the xmlns:xsi namespace, not xsi.schemaLocation.   Fonts / national characters   This point is a little dfferent to acquire, but not more complicated that it was with FO.NET. To set the fonts in Apache FOP 1.0, we need a configuration file. A sample one can be get from the directory where we unpacked the fop binaries, from conf subdirectory. There is a file called fop.xconf. We must copy this file to our solution. In the simplest way, in the <fonts> tag we can add  <auto-detect/>. Thanks to this, FOP will index all fonts available on the installed operating system. There probably should be no problem, if we have a http handler or a WCF Service on the server that serves the generated pdf documents. In this situation we can use all available fonts on this server.   To use this config file, we must set a path to it:   FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); fopFactory.setUserConfig(new File("fop.xconf"));

• Ubuntu 12.04 upgrade and thunderbird

  After applying the suggested updates (179) an error message at the very end of the process suggested me to run apt-get install -f. Since it is a fairly new Ubuntu install (x86) I didn't setup anything in Thunderbird yet. • 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install

  I can't install xojo. When I click install in the software center it's not progressing. So i uncheck: Added by software-center; credentials stored in /etc/apt/auth.conf https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/xojo/ubuntu GPG error was gone. But then again I found myself at the beginning of the problem.STUCK at '0% [Working]'. 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install.Any explanation why is it like that?

• PerlRegEx vs RegularExpressionsCore Delphi Units

  The RegularExpressionsCore unit that is part of Delphi XE is based on the latest class-based PerlRegEx unit that I developed. Embarcadero only made a few changes to the unit. These changes are insignificant enough that code written for earlier versions of Delphi using the class-based PerlRegEx unit will work just the same with Delphi XE. The unit was renamed from PerlRegEx to RegularExpressionsCore. When migrating your code to Delphi XE, you can choose whether you want to use the new RegularExpressionsCore unit or continue using the PerlRegEx unit in your application. All you need to change is which unit you add to the uses clause in your own units. Indentation and line breaks in the code were changed to match the style used in the Delphi RTL and VCL code. This does not change the code, but makes it harder to diff the two units. Literal strings in the unit were separated into their own unit called RegularExpressionsConsts. These strings are only used for error messages that indicate bugs in your code. If your code uses TPerlRegEx correctly then the user should not see any of these strings. My code uses assertions to check for out of bounds parameters, while Embarcadero uses exceptions. Again, if you use TPerlRegEx correctly, you should never get any assertions or exceptions. The Compile method raises an exception if the regular expression is invalid in both my original TPerlRegEx component and Embarcadero’s version. If your code allows the user to provide the regular expression, you should explicitly call Compile and catch any exceptions it raises so you can tell the user there is a problem with the regular expression. Even with user-provided regular expressions, you shouldn’t get any other assertions or exceptions if your code is correct. Note that Embarcadero owns all the rights to their RegularExpressionsCore unit. Like all the other RTL and VCL units, this unit cannot be distributed by myself or anyone other than Embarcadero. I do retain the rights to my original PerlRegEx unit which I will continue to make available for those using older versions of Delphi.

• BizTalk 2009 - Error when Testing Map with Flat File Source Schema

  I have recently been creating some flat file schemas using the BizTalk Server 2009 Flat File Schema Wizard.  I have then been mapping these flat file schemas to a "normal" xml schema format. I have not previsouly had any cause to map flat files and ran into some trouble when testing the first of these flat file maps; with an instance of the flat file as the source it threw an XSL transform error: Test Map.btm: error btm1050: XSL transform error: Unable to write output instance to the following <file:///C:\Documents and Settings\sbrierley\Local Settings\Temp\_MapData\Test Mapping\Test Map_output.xml>. Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1. Due to the complexity of the map in question I decided to created a small test map using the same source and destination schemas to see if I could pinpoint the problem.  Although the source message instance vaildated correctly against the flat file schema, when I then tested this simplified map I got the same error. After a time of fruitless head scratching and some serious google time I figured out what the problem was. Looking at the map properties I noticed that I had the test map input set to "XML" - for a flat file instance this should be set to "native".

• grub workaround for cannot find UUID in dual boot system fails and now grub won't boot anything

  New clean install of x86 11.10 desktop. Dual boot with windows XP and Linux on separate drives. After install grub will not boot Windows, but by changing boot drive boots fine. When I go to fix this I find from http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ and a link to http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:search my problem, the message on the grub boot error screen: error: no such device: 6??????? So I follow the Step2 and compare the output of: sudo blkid and sudo nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg The UUIDs in both match for the Windows drive, so I do the fix in Step 4 "remove the search lines for …" in /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib, commenting out the three lines as before? # if fs_uuid="`${grub_probe} --device ${device} --target=fs_uuid 2> /dev/null`" ; then # echo "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set ${fs_uuid}" # fi I run sudo update-grub and check /etc/default/grub.cfg and see that it now identifies the Windows partition not by UUID, which I suppose is the workaround. But now when I try to boot 11.10 Desktop, I get: error: no such partition… … and when I try to boot Windows, I get: error: invalid signature. So Now, how do I fix this… The boot problem and find a workaround that works?

• CQRS applicability when some commands need to block the UI

  I am working on an app which I would dearly love to transition from a fairly traditional layered architecture to CQRS, for a number of reasons, not least fo which is that having a robust event log will make adding a couple of feature requests I can see barrelling towards me trivial to accomodate. Now, I have a conceptual problem: of around 40 commands the user can initiate, there are three which the user needs to be sure have successfully completed before the UI lets them do anything else. Everything else fits into the "submit a request, query for success later" model, except for these three commands. How is this handled in CQRS-land? Do I separate the three blocking commands to effectively a third service, so I have Commands, Queries, and BlockingCommands? Do I have a two-stage event processor with an in-request blocking first stage which only gets used for the blocking commands? Does the existence of these three commands mean that the whole idea of applying CQRS is invalid? Should I just pretend they aren't blocking and poll for success in the UI? I'm sure this must come up on other projects, how is it usually handled?

• Checking preconditions or not

  I've been wanting to find a solid answer to the question of whether or not to have runtime checks to validate input for the purposes of ensuring a client has stuck to their end of the agreement in design by contract. For example, consider a simple class constructor: class Foo { public: Foo( BarHandle bar ) { FooHandle handle = GetFooHandle( bar ); if( handle == NULL ) { throw std::exception( "invalid FooHandle" ); } } }; I would argue in this case that a user should not attempt to construct a Foo without a valid BarHandle. It doesn't seem right to verify that bar is valid inside of Foo's constructor. If I simply document that Foo's constructor requires a valid BarHandle, isn't that enough? Is this a proper way to enforce my precondition in design by contract? So far, everything I've read has mixed opinions on this. It seems like 50% of people would say to verify that bar is valid, the other 50% would say that I shouldn't do it, for example consider a case where the user verifies their BarHandle is correct, but a second (and unnecessary) check is also being done inside of Foo's constructor.

  I used the Bing webmaster tool's SEO analyzer on my website, and it reported There are multiple <H1> tags on the page. It recommends that there should only be one <h1> tag on the page. The page is a listing of blog posts for a category. So each blog entry is structured like this. <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> How is this invalid? I thought this was the correct way to describe a post in HTML5.

• Install GRUB to Ubuntu Partition

  So my computer has the following partitions: /dev/sda -- (I know this isn't a real partition, but more so the boot loader) /dev/sda1 -- (Windows 7 Boot Loader) /dev/sda3 -- (Windows 7) /dev/sda4 -- (Data partition, NTFS) that means i have /dev/sda2 as free space. I do not want to change the MBR of the computer. I would like /dev/sda2 to contain GRUB AND Ubuntu. So ideally when I turn my computer on, BIOS would ask if I'd like to boot Windows 7 or Ubuntu(or Grub or partition 2), and I could choose either one. But I would like Grub and Ubuntu to be on the same partition, so they will not interfere in any way with windows or window's boot loader/partition (sda3) How can I do this? Catch: when formatting partitions, Ubuntu does not give me the option to make them virtual partitions, so that makes things harder. I tried: installing Ubuntu to /dev/sda2 (which I formatted as ext4) and then told the Ubuntu installer to install the bootloader to /dev/sda2. But when I select "Ubuntu" from BIOS's boot selection, it loads a black screen and says "invalid arch independent ELF magic grub rescue _" and allows me to input stuff. How can I fix this, or tell my computer where Grub is?

• Obscure SPUtility.SendMail Behavior When Manually Passing in Mail Headers

  There are two ways to send mail in SharePoint: you can either use the mail components from the System.Net namespace, or you can send email using SharePoint's SPUtility.SendMail method.  One of the benefits of the SPUtility.SendMail method is that it uses the mail configuration from SharePoint, so you can manage settings in Central Administration instead of having to go through and modify your web.config file.  SPUtility.SendMail can get the job done, but it's defiantly not as developer friendly as the components from the System.Net namespace.  If you want to CC someone on an email, for example, you do NOT have a nice CC parameter - you have to manually add the CC mail header and pass it into the SPUtility.SendMail method.  I had to do this the other day, and ran into a really obscure issue. If you do NOT pass the headers into the method then SharePoint sends the email using the From Address configured in the Outgoing Mail settings in Central Admin.  If you pass headers into the method, but do not include the from header, then SharePoint sends the mail using the email address of the current user. This can be an issue if your mail server is setup to reject an email from an invalid email address or an email address that is not on your domain.  The way to fix this issue is to always pass in the from header.  If you want to use the configured From address, then you can do the following: SPWebApplication webApp = SPWebApplication.Lookup(new Uri(SPContext.Current.Site.Url)); StringDictionary headers = new StringDictionary(); headers.Add("from", webApp.OutboundMailSenderAddress);

(If it's the case of the invalid certificate I don't mind ignoring any checks)

I'm starting to wonder if I've developed bad or otherwise pointless habits from other people, or even just made invalid assumptions. For example, in javascript, void 0 is used in a lot of places, and until I saw this, I just assumed it was necessary and that 0 had some significance. Also, the http header, referer is misspelled but hasn't been changed because it would break a lot of applications.   What is says in the topic: there's a Wireless N access point to which I'd like to connect using the 5 GHz band exclusively. How does one accomplish this? Using the directive band=a in the connection configuration file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections doesn't seem to affect anything (/var/log/syslog still shows attempts by wpa_supplicant to connect using the 2.4 GHz band), and running iwconfig wlan0 freq 5G per this question results in the following error: Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. • "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda" when installing GRUB

  I recently bought a shiny new Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and I want to dual boot it with Ubuntu for studying purposes. Its built-in OS is Windows 8.1 and it has a 256GB SSD. I've made a separate 90GB partition just for Ubuntu and a live USB to install it. The first time everything seemed to work great, I solved the wifi issued by blacklisting ideapad_laptop, the installation went flawlessly and Ubuntu worked fine. When I got up the next morning and turned on my laptop it booted into Windows right away without ever showing the GRUB menu. So I tried to reset, and checked my partitions with the Disk Manager and everything looked fine. Since I couldn't find a solution online I went ahead and formatted the partition to try and install again. This time and every time since, the installation was aborted and I got a fatal error saying: Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda Executing `grub-install /dev/sda` failed. This is a fatal error. Can anyone please suggest a solution to this problem? If any further information is needed I would be happy to provide it. Thanks. When installing I get the following in details: ubuntu kernel: [ 1946.372741] FAT-fs (sda2): error, fat_get_cluster: invalid cluster chain (i_pos 0). ubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --force failed.

• Cube chunk via list ToArray()

  I've created a list of vertices that I call for each cube made in my array "cubes". When each cube is create, SetUpVertices is called which is a method that stores the 8 vertices of my cube. At the end of my list creation, I create a vertex buffer, and set the data of the list that contains vertices of all 25 cubes to that vertex buffer, effectively creating a "chunk" of cubes. The problem is that Invalid Operation Exception "The array is not the correct size for the amount of data requested." at the line vertices.ToArray(). I don't have an array for this, as the amount of cubes will be changing and arrays aren't dynamic. • Glue Records creation

  I need some information on the following issue, as I would like to have it clear on my mind. I have a VPS server. All my sites hosted on this VPS are using as NameServer .gr domain, like ns1.greekdomain.gr & ns2.greekdomain.gr . The .gr domain name is a domain I own with a greek registar. Now, I want to move 2 websites with .co.uk domain names to my VPS. The co.uk domain names are registered with a UK based registar. When I went in the domain management panel, I did changed the nameservers of my domains to my ns.greekdomain.gr ns. However the panel returns an error about invalid nameservers. After digging, I found that my nameservers are not valid because they do not exist as records in the .co.uk registry. And here it starts my big trouble. The .co.uk registart tells me that I have to ask my hosting provider / .gr registar to create a new record to the .uk registry for my nameservers. The .gr registar tells me that my uk registar needs to create a new record for my ns. From Nominet (.co.uk) registry, the one employee tells me that I need to ask my uk registar, the other employee (seemed to not understand what I was asking) told me that they cannot change my nameservers for me, and she told me to contact anyone else (old hosting provider, uk registar, .gr registar) to help me with that. I can't find help from nobody. I try since the last week to transfer my websites to my VPS and I can't. So, the question is who is responsible and who is able to create glue records for my nameservers ?
