  • How to understand existing projects

    Hi. I am a trainee developer and have been writing .NET applications for about a year now. Most of the work I have done has involved building new applications (mainly web apps) from scratch and I have been given more or less full control over the software design. This has been a great experience however, as a trainee developer my confidence about whether the approaches I have taken are the best is minimal. Ideally I would love to collaborate with more experienced developers (I find this the best was I learn) however in the company I work for developers tend to work in isolation (a great shame for me). Recently I decided that a good way to learn more about how experienced developers approach their design might be to explore some open source projects. I found myself a little overwhelmed by the projects I looked at. With my level of experience it was hard to understand the body of code I faced. My question is slight fuzzy one. How do developers approach the task of understanding a new medium to large scale project. I found myself pouring over lots of code and struggling to see the wood for the trees. At any one time I felt that I could understand a small portion of the system but not see how its all fits together. Do others get this same feeling? If so what approaches do you take to understanding the project? Do you have any other advice about how to learn design best practices? Any advice will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

  • What is Restful Routing?

    I have been searching pretty hard for info out on the net to explain exactly what Restful routing is but I haven't had any success. There are a lot of resources but not a who lot make sense to me. I'm familiar with Ruby On Rails's routing system and well as how Code Igniter and PhpCake route things but is there more to it than having a centralized location where you give out routes based on a directory structure? Like this: controller/action/id/ Admin/editUser/22 I'd appreciate any help with this, it's had me baffled for months. I just thought of putting it on SO. Thanks

  • Color Themes for Eclipse?

    I am a recovering Emacs user, who is trying to ease into Eclipse usage. (Since I'm encouraging the rest of the team to use it, I guess I should at least try to get along). My current excuse is that it hurts my eyes. I'm currently using the excellent zenburn theme in emacs, and would love to find it for eclipse. However, I find that changing my color theme every few months makes for a great way to procrastinate, so ideally I'd like to find a repository for eclipse color themes. There don't appear to be any eclipse themes indexed by Google, so all the great themes must be sitting on your hard disk somewhere. Please share them. Thanks

    Hi all, I have around 8000 xml files that needs to be converted into text files. The text file must contain title, description and keywords of the xml file without the tags and removing other elements and attributes as well. In other words, i need to create 8000 text files containing the title,description and keywords of the xml file. I need codings for this to be done systematically.     Using Visual Studio 2008 and VB.Net: I have a working web app that uses an ASMX web service which is compiled into its separate assembly. I have another class library project compiled as a separate assembly that serves as a proxy to this web service. This all seems to work at runtime but I am getting this warning at compile time which I don't understand and would like to fix: Type of member 'wsZipeee' is not CLS-compliant I have dozens of webforms in the main project that reference the proxy class with no compile time complaints as this snippet shows: Imports System.Data Partial Class frmZipeee Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Public wsZipeee As New ProxyZipeeeService.WSZipeee.Zipeee Dim dsStandardMsg As DataSet Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load And yet I have one webform (also in the root of the main project) which gives me the "not CLS-compliant" message but yet attempts to reference the proxy class just like the other ASPX files. I get the compile time warning on the line annoted by me with 'ERROR here.. Imports System.Data Partial Class frmHome Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Public wsZipeee As New ProxyZipeeeService.WSZipeee.Zipeee ERROR here Dim dsStandardMsg As DataSet Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load This makes no sense to me. The file with the warning is called frmHome.aspx.vb; all others in the project declare things the same way and have no warning. BTW, the webservice itself returns standard datatypes: integer, string, and dataset.

    In sprite-based systems, it's common to fake rotation of a sprite by having many different images, each showing it rotated an extra few degrees. Is there any free tool which will take a single image, and output a single image containing several rotations? It should also ideally let us control how many images are in each row. e.g if I have a 32x32 sprite and I want it rotated at 10 degree intervals, the tool might generate a 320x32 file or a 160x64 file

  • Just when I thought my site was working right, it screws up in IE7

    I thought I'd done quite well, my site passed XHTML1.0 strict validation and worked flawlessly in IE6 as well as looking fine in IE8 & Chrome. I glibly thought that it it worked in IE6 & 8, IE7 was bound to be OK. But on checking I see one of my has a scrollbar in IE7, the seems about 200% as wide as it should be... the content is fine but you can scroll the whole . 2 separate pages have this issue, a 3rd does not, even though all pages use the same layout template - the main difference on the 2 that break is a floated div. Are there known issues specifically in this area with IE7? Or do I have to embarrass myself by posting a link to the site?

  • Very simple python functions takes spends long time in function and not subfunctions

    I have spent many hours trying to figure what is going on here. The function 'grad_logp' in the code below is called many times in my program, and cProfile and runsnakerun the visualize the results reveals that the function grad_logp spends about .00004s 'locally' every call not in any functions it calls and the function 'n' spends about .00006s locally every call. Together these two times make up about 30% of program time that I care about. It doesn't seem like this is function overhead as other python functions spend far less time 'locally' and merging 'grad_logp' and 'n' does not make my program faster, but the operations that these two functions do seem rather trivial. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be happening? Have I done something obviously inefficient?   • How do you have grayed out text in a textfield that dissapears when the user clicks on it

    In HTML & JS, how do you make a textfield that has grayed out text telling the user what the field is for that goes away when the user clicks on the field? For example, in firefox the search field in the top right hand side says which search engine it uses when there's nothing entered, then once you click it's an empty textfield, but if you leave it blank and remove focus from the textfield then the grayed out text is back again. Is there a name for this behavior? Also, is it possible to do in pure css without the use of js to do the on focus / on blur events?

  • Advantage to parsing Excel Spreadsheet data vs. CSV?

    I have tabulated data in an Excel spreadsheet (file size will likely never be larger than 1 mb). I want to use PHP to parse the data and insert in to a MySQL database. Is there any advantage to keeping the file as an .xls/.xlsx and parsing it using a PHP Excel Parsing Library? If so, what are some good libraries to use? Obviuously, I can save the .xls/.xlsx as a CSV and handle the file that way. Thanks!

  • PHP / Windows - Opendir() fails opening subdirectories within symbolic linked directories

    Does anyone know a solution to this problem? I'm unable to open a subdirectory within a symboliclink'd directory. I've confirmed that the paths are correct (even copy & pasted the path into explorer, which parsed it fine). This is a strange, annoying, bug :|. Example: C:\folder\symbolic_link\dir1\dir2 - opening dir2 fails. C:\folder\symbolic_link\dir1 - works C:\folder\real_directory\dir1\dir2 - works C:\folder\real_directory\dir1 - works

  • Templates in C#

    I know generics are in C# to fulfill a role similar to C++ templates but I really need a way to generate some code at compile time - in this particular situation it would be very easy to solve the problem with C++ templates. Does anyone know of any alternatives? Perhaps a VS plug-in that preprocesses the code or something like that?
