  • Fonts look bad in Microsoft Office using Wine

    Office fonts in wine look very different from what they look in Windows or LibreOffice. As can be seen from the attached screenshots, they look blurry in some sizes and aliased in other sizes. You can see the differences not only in the document text but also in the ribbon menu. It happens with a lot of fonts. I'm testing it with Office 2010 now, but it also happens in Office 2007. Things I've tried: Changing fontsmooth settings with winetricks - made no difference. Copying fonts from a Windows system - made no difference. Using Ubuntu's fonts (by removing the Windows/Fonts from the wineprefix) - removed the blurriness in some fonts but increased aliasing. The three screenshots correspond to different "configurations": office_wine.png - Office Word in Wine using Wine's original fonts; office_nowinefonts.png - Office Word in Wine using Ubuntu's fonts; office_windows.png - Office Word in Windows.   • Future of WPF and free controls ? [closed]

    I am willing to work on a personal project that I would like to release publicly. I am working with Silverlight and have experience with XAML, as it is my full-time job. It is enjoyably for me to create UIs in Blend and XAML. I am also a big fan of C# language. I don't know what I would do without LINQ now. Anyways, I was looking at using WPF for my personal project. It seems that a lot of the controls out on the web are pay for items. The only place I have found to have a significant number of free controls is the WPF extended framework on codeplex. I want to make a financial application and need a powerful datagrid type of control that will allow me to enter transaction data. I haven't found such control for free in the net. It doesn't seem like there is much free community libraries/controls out there for Microsoft products. So, I was wondering if WPF would be the right way for me to go. I couldn't find any information on WPF usage in Windows 8, which coming very soon. I don't know Microsoft's plans for this technology. Would it be a better idea to use something different for the UI instead of WPF?

  • Can not access Internet (DNS names do not resolve) after update today

    I have been using Precise for a few weeks now for work with no problem. Today, I am not able to access any website using either wired or wireless connections. I installed the updates today which included nautilus, xserver, and a new kernel (3.2.0-24). After restarting I no longer was able to browse the Internet using firefox or chrome. Trying to ping google in terminal gives ping: unknown host google.ca I have tried: Connecting to wireless or wired networks (both working on other machines) Restart the machine and boot with previous Kernel Manually configure opendns on my wired connection Restart the network and the laptop and the wireless card Without any success so far. I am not sure where to go next. Please let me know the cause of the issue or help me troubleshoot it. Note that the laptop does receive an ip address, and it can ping ip address of google.ca (74.125.127.94) but not the domain name, or any domain name for that matter. This system was upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 more two weeks ago.

    I've got several Ubuntu 10.10 servers which should all be set to do automatic security updates. Is there any way I could get them to send me an email when they apply updates (particularly if they fail)? I'm using r-u-on to monitor availability, disk space etc but the security updates are very important and I don't have a good way to monitor them. I could possibly script something myself but I figured it's the kind of thing that's probably been solved many times already.

  • Jdk 6.0 update 6 installed sucessfully but java command not working

    I switched to linux (Ubuntu 12.04) this morning and find it great but messed up while installing java. :-(. I have installed jdk6.0_6 successfully but when I run java command in terminal, I get this ravi@ravi-LIFEBOOK-AH531:~$ java The program 'java' can be found in the following packages: * default-jre * gcj-4.6-jre-headless * openjdk-6-jre-headless * gcj-4.5-jre-headless * openjdk-7-jre-headless Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package> Could someone help me with this? Below are the steps that I followed to install: copied file named jdk-6u6-linux-x64.bin to my documents from terminal executed chmod a+x jdk-6u6-linux-x64.bin and then executed sudo ./jdk-6u6-linux-x64.bin In terminal I accepted the license agreement and done.

  • Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

    The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? Ideally, the UpdatePanel would have a client-side function named something like Refresh that could be called from script to perform a partial page postback and refresh the UpdatePanel. Unfortunately, no such function exists. Instead, you have to write script that triggers a partial page postback for the UpdatePanel you want to refresh.   • PIN request at each login after update to Maverick

    I have a netbook with included 3G mobile broadband card (Huawei E620). I have configured the broadband network connection in the Network Manager and it works perfectly. However since Maverick upgrade, a window appears just after login I asking for the SIMcard PIN. This happens every time I log in and did not happen with Lucid. Note that the PIN is stored in the configuration of the mobile broadband connection and Lucid was satisfied with that. Is there a way to prevent this request or, at least, to have the system rember the PIN and stop ansking for it? If it may be useful, the broadband network connection is configured as not being available for other users. Also, I would like to keep the SIMcard asking for the PIN; only I do not want to insert it manually at login.

  • During Vista Repair - No operating system is listed.

    After a Windows update, my brother's Gateway computer loads to the "Step 3 of 3: 0%" and reboots. Safe Mode does not work. I placed a Vista DVD in the drive, and re-booted. (Note, this is my Vista DVD, not the Recovery/System disc that would come with a computer. Gateway does not give you CD's anymore. I believe they store recovery on a partition, but that partition has been wiped out). I chose "Repair Your Computer" I get a dialog box, but no operating system is listed. I'm then prompted to "Load Drivers". What drivers am I supposed to be loading here and where from? I placed a CD in the drive to "load drivers" but I don't see my DVD drive listed. All I saw where X:/Sources along with several Removable Media slots that were empty. On another screen I tried Startup Repair, which didn't do anything. I attempted to use System Restore - but it doesn't detect the hard drive. I'm guessing that I'm missing some sort of SATA driver and that is why the hard disk is not being found. Any ideas on this?
