• Services - Separate Sites or One Site - Impact on SEO

  I have a client who is a lawyer that specializes in Criminal Defense and DUI, however, he does not show up well in Google. In researching the sites that rank better have much more content for those specialties than his site does and my thought it that he needs to add more quality content to rank better for those searches. On his site he mentions his specialties, but also he has various personal things on his sites that reflect his interest. These are clearly separated from the business portion. My questions are should he 1) separate his personal information into a new domain and 2) should he have a separate URL for each of his specialties? OR would one URL work as long as everything is clearly separated? I read once that for legal services to rank well you should make a separate site for each specialty and have that site focus solely on that service.

I like to learn from videos but most videos I've found on the internet are provided by people who do not follow good practices. My second option is to learn from books but I did not find a good book for starters in PHP! • Is there now any way to convert mp3 files to m4a or aac 192kbit?

  Since about two years now I am trying to find a way to convert high quality mp3 files to m4a or aac files with a fixed bitrate 192k. Please don't suggest using another format - i thought this through as far as it goes. The problem here is: ffmpeg obvioulsy can't convert to a higher bitrate than 152k. Even when it says it does so the resulting files still have 152k instead of 192k. ffmpeg also has/had a bug not writing the bitrate into the audio file tags which means when testing you have to calculate the bitrate manually by dividing the filesize by the length of the audio in seconds (resulting in 152k - see above) choosing faac as converter gets me the same results other programs don't work reliably (see this thread Howto convert audio files to *.m4a? I know that this is not an original new problem but I am wondering if there is still no way to convert with ubuntu/kubuntu 12.04 after a lot time passed and I can't find some of the bug issues mentioned in the other thread anymore. So: Is there a solution after all?

  I'm looking for a good resource to start learning 3d modeling. I'm looking for something that starts with the basics (e.g. terminology; what are quads, triangles etc.) before/while going into the actual modeling. Book, website, video, anything will do. I'm only concerned with the quality of the tutorials, how thorough they are. I have experience with texturing, level design and so on - but I've never created anything more than simple shapes/editing existing assets.

• Update drivers for TL-WN851ND

  Today I bought a new PCI wireless card, TP-Link WN851ND, with Atheros AR9227 chipset. It has 2 antennas and is compatible with Wifi N so I thought it would improve the quality of the signal. But after install it on my computer the result is the opposite to expected. It doesn't connect to my network, while my old Wifi BG card connect without problems, I created an access point from my smartphone to try the card, and work, but is very slow loading pages. In Windows 7 works perfectly, so I think the problem is the driver. I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with kernel 3.2.0.31, is there a way to update the driver or I can apply a patch to improve the performance of the card? Otherwise, anyone know if there is a work in progress to improve compatibility with this chipset, or is it better to change the card and buy one with better driver compatibility. And finally, which wireless N compatible chipsets have good support under Linux/Ubuntu?

  This is my application. It is created with quickly. I would like to package it for Ubuntu now. I tried to package it with uickly, but that failed. At first, I was trying to install it using setup.py. But it is only copied in python lib dir, no icon, no desktop file installed. Then I tried to follow this guide, but I ended up with package without icon and it was of bad quality, but most important of all, it does not use setup.py, and it was pretty complicated. I would like to automate packaging process Can someone point me in the right direction, some examples of existing apps that have automated packaging etc? Thanks in advance.

• What should a page's minimum word count be in order to be effectively indexed?

  I'm seeding a new site with hundreds of (high quality) posts, but since I am paying per word written, I'm wondering if anybody in the community has any anecdotal evidence as to how many words of content there should now be for a page to be counted just the same as a 700 word+ post, for example? I know there are always examples of pages ranking well with, for instance, 50 words or less of content, but does anyone have any strong evidence on what the minimum count should be, or has anyone read anything very informative in regards to this issue? • How can I generate signed distance fields (2D) in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • WIFI card intel r 2200 will not work

  I have installed 12.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro. Wifi card does not work. Have tried various threads but none have the same problem. • Orthographic Projection with variable FOV

  We are building agame with orthographic view. The problem we face is the fact that with different resolution you can see different area of the game world. E.g. if you have higher resolution you can see more around you. To solve this we currently use a common scale factor that every model is scaled by, depending on resolution. But this has drawbacks when drawing shadows - I cannot set a higher view angle for the orthographic shadow camera, while when using the perspective shadow camera I get significantly worse shadow quality. So the question is is there any way to controll FOV when using orthographic projection, or, more specifically, what is the easiest way to scale the world uniformly up or down with orthographic projection matrix? I saw that in 3ds MAX you can control FOV for an orthographic camera I wonder how they implemented it.

• How much to pay for artwork in an indie game?

  I am an indie developer and I need some detailed artwork. How much is reasonable to pay an artist for say 20 character designs? I know it depends on the artist's skills, etc, but I am wondering what to expect so that I can budget it. Edit: Let's say cartoon-ish art (Example - not necessarily in that level of detail but that kind of cartoony-art style). No 3-d modelling - The art will be used as still images in game and for promotional reasons. I'd provide a base sprite design for them to expand on and detail. Also, some numbers would be nice - I like numbers. Even a range is helpful. Like: expect to spend $x2 ~ $x1 for top-notch and $y2 ~ $y1 for decent quality. I understand I can ask at some indie-help site but, if an artist says something like $1000 for 20 designs, I wouldn't have any idea if it's reasonable / good deal / bad idea etc.

• Clicking on clues and other objects in a 2D cluedo like game

  I'm a java/android programmer, but I don't have any experience in game programming, I'm already reading proper books, like "Pro Android Games", but my concerns are more about the ideas behind game programming than the techniques themselves. I'm working on a 2D game, something like Cluedo to let you understand the genre. I would like to know how should I act with the "scenes", for example, a room with a desk, TV, windows and a lamp. I need to make some items tappable and others not. Is it common to use one image (invisible to the user) with every different item a different color, then call the getColor() method on the image? Or use one image as background, and separate images for all the items? If the latter, how can I set the positioning? and should I use imageView or imageButton? I'm sorry if those are really low quality questions, but as "outsider" ( I'm 23 and still finishing my university ) it's pretty hard learn alone.

• As a Junior Software Engineer should I say that something has been done wrong if I feel so?

  I recently joined a company and it is my first job. When reading the code base, I felt that the code was not well written. It seemed to me that the code had most of the problems mentioned here and also seemed to have an Anemic Domain Model. There are no unit tests and they don't employ any code quality checking tools like findbugs or pmd. The problem I have is that the code is very difficult to understand. Maybe my conclusions are wrong because I am not that experienced. I need advice on whether to communicate the above facts to a superior or not. If I am to communicate, to whom(Tech Lead, Architect, Product Manager) and how? And if I do communicate will they take it badly since I'm a Junior and has no experience?

• How to keep a team well-trained?

  Hi dear fellows, I'm currently mentoring a small team of 4 junior dev in small software company. They are very smart and often achieve their tasks with a high-quality job but I'm sure they still can do better - actually I have exactly the same feeling for myself :) -. Besides some of them are more "junior" than other. So I would like to find of a funny way to improve their CS skills (design, coding, testing, algorithmic...) in addition to the experience they acquire in their daily work. For instance, I was thinking of setting up weekly sessions, not longer than 2 hours, where we could get together to work on challenging CS exercises. A bit like a coding dojo. I'm sure the team would enjoy that but is it really a good idea? Would it be efficient in a professional context? They already spend all their week to code so how should I organize that in order for them to get some benefits? Any feedback welcome !
