  • Samsung 530U3C clean system installation

    I have bought Samsung 530U3C notebook with i5-3317/12GB RAM/500GB HDD/24GB ExpressCache/Windows 8 preinstalled. I would like to install my own clean version of Win8. But I would like to preserve recovery partition. I will sell this laptop in probably 1-1.5 year and I would like to be able to restore settings to factory ones. What is more, in the future I would like to install Ubuntu as well, but Windows goes first. At the moment discs and partitions looks like below (sorry for non English screen): http://i.stack.imgur.com/p4W6t.jpg DISC 0: 500MB - recovery partition 300MB - system partition 442.22GB - Drive C: - Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary partition 21.64GB - recovery partition 1.00GB - recovery partition DISC 1: 9.00GB - primary partition 13.24GB - primary partition Which partitions can I format and which of them should I preserve? Can I format and merge partitions from that 24GB ExpressCache and install Windows on it?

  • Problem restarting my Ubuntu system

    Whenever I try to restart my Ubuntu either from the command line by typing reboot or in GNOME the computer goes from X to console, starts the shutdown process and then a message saying "[ some number ] Starting new kernel" appears on the screen and the computer goes back to X login screen. I suspect this must have something to do with nvidia drivers, because it seemed to have appeared around the time I bought a new graphic card. Also, when I reboot the second time I see weird graphical artifacts on the screen. When I boot from ubuntu live cd I can reboot just fine. I used jaunty, recently I switched to karmic with no change. This bug is very annoying, because I have to hard reset my computer in order to reboot. Also not good for the filesystems, I suspect. Can you suggest a way to debug the cause or if not at least the easiest way to go about reinstalling ubuntu without losing customizations/settings/data?

  • Virtualbox 4 hangs when trying to install ubuntu guest on ubuntu host system

    I'm trying to install ubuntu server using virtualbox 4.0.4 in a ubuntu 10.10 host OS. I have the iso image on my hard drive which I used to perform the install. I edited the settings and added this image at the storage section, selected it as a primary master, so I could boot from it and start the install process. But now, each time I start the installation, at the very beginning or if I'm lucky, after I click on the install link at the welcome screen, the process hangs and all the computer is blocked. This happened 3 times already. I even tried to perform the installation using an old CD I had with the 9.10 server version, thinking that the iso image might be the issue, but the problem still persists. I dont know what could cause this problem. My computer is a dell laptop with AMD processor (I dont know if this is important). Any help is very appreciated.

  • User's home drive permissions don't contain system or administrators on Windows Server 2008 R2

    I have a user whose home drive has only that user in the permissions. No administrators, etc. I have tried to take ownership as a local administrator however I cant seem to apply settings to the child objects -- it still gives me a permission denied error. I know there are some handy CLI utils that can redo permissions. Any ideas? Or even a way to do it through Windows? The file server is a 2008 R2 server.

  • Hide Outlook envelope in system tray

    When I get a new email in Outlook 2003 I get two notifications; one is the envelope in the system tray, and one is the fading noticiation message in the lower right corner. If I click the notification message, the envelope will never disappear, even if all emails are read. If Outlook is restarted the envelope disappears. If I right click the envelope and choose "Hide envelope" I have to go into the settings and set the Show envelope option to true again to see the envelope. I want the envelope, but only when there are any unread emails in my inbox. How do I fix this?

  • Windows XP - Repairing Corrupt System32\Config\System File

    My apologies for this long post. I would like to describe the mess I'm in then ask some questions about how to fix it: Starting up my Windows XP SP1 machine I got the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Tried restarting several times with same results then Googled the problem. Tried the fix described here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair%5Fwindows%5Fxp (since my CPU does not have XD buffer overflow protection I did not set /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as OS Load Option). This did not work. I then found another fix for the problem on hardwareanalysis.com: Basically, boot to dos prompt (or recovery console if available) and make backups of the following files:- c:\windows\system32\config\system (to c:\windows\tmp\system.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\software (to c:\windows\tmp\software.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\sam (to c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\security (to c:\windows\tmp\security.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\default (to c:\windows\tmp\default.bak) then delete the above files (not the backups!) then copy the above files in c:\windows\repair to the c:\windows\system32\config directory restart your computer This did work (and I wish I'd done it first, since it was completely reversible, unlike the first method). However, afterwards I found that all the user accounts on the PC were gone. I resurrected them by copying the backed up security file back into the system32\config folder (I may have copied the SAM file from backup as well, I cannot remember clearly now). Now the PC boots up and I can log in. However things are still not right. I tried to alter one of the user accounts and found I could not access the User Accounts in the Control Panel. Microsoft KB 919292 had a fix for the problem. However, the fix failed with a Windows Installer error: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. Windows Installer 3.1 was already installed. I reinstalled it but continued to get the Windows Installer error whenever I tried to run the fix in KB 919292. I have since noticed another three problems: 1) Several applications on the PC no longer run, eg Microsoft Word. Shortcuts no longer seem to do anything and if I run the executables directly (eg for Word by running C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Winword.exe) I get a message similar to: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." even though the executable is clearly visible in Windows Explorer (and even though Word actually opens - the error dialog appears after Word has opened. Clicking OK to the error dialog closes Word). 2) One or the other of the two fixes I tried for the original problem caused new user profiles to be created. eg My old user profile under the Documents and Settings folder was Simon. The old one still exists but there is now a new one called Simon.DBQ2515. Obviously the new one is being used because Opera (my browser that still works) no longer sees the bookmarks file under my old profile. 3) Probably as a result of fooling around with the Security file, when I try to boot off the Windows XP CD and run the Recovery Console I am now asked for the administrator password. The only problem is there is no administrator account on the PC. There is one account, LocalAdmin, that has administrative rights but when I entered the password for that account it did not work. It is so long since I originally set up the PC that I cannot remember if the original administrator account ever had a password and, if so, what it was. So, my question is: How can I fix this mess? In particular: 1) Having tried the two fixes linked to above, have I irrepairably damaged the Windows instance, requiring a clean reinstallation of Windows + all applications, or should it be possible to get the machine working correctly again without such drastic measures? 2) Is there any way to get around the administrator password so I can use the Recovery Console again, given that there is no account called "administrator" and the password for the one account with admin privileges does not work (and that, before I started the second fix, I was not asked for an administrator password)? 3) Is there any easy way to fix the problem with the applications that think they are not installed? 4) Is there any easy way to fix the problem of the Windows Installer that does not work, even if reinstalled?   • Will running aspnet_regiis.exe -ir create any problems?

    Hi there. I've asked a question about changing the version of .Net sites in the IIS. If it affects classic asp sites etc (See Does asp.net setting affect classic asp (IIS 6 settings)) And that seems fine. So my follow-up question is, will running this command get me fired? What it does is changing the default value (and all existing?) of the .net version to 2.0. This wont affect any of the .net sites since they're allready versioned to 2.0. The classic asp pages needs to get its app pools updated so its functionoal with 2.0 but may I run into any other troubles? I've tried doing this on a test environment and no sites whet down during the installation period (from the command) but I did not have any classic asp sites or any .net sites running though (which I should test, come to think about it) but may something else break? Is this command doing anything else? We have some very large sites running and we cannot have downtime periods so I need to be 100% sure that this command is safe. Since all sites go down everytime we change a new sites .net version number we need to get this fix live asap. Any good ideas?

    Hello, i am using visual C# express 2008. I SOMETIMES get the illegal cross thread operation in my invoke method when i try to run my project. It use the same invoke method in many places but its only at the beginning of another thread that i get the error. I check the InvokeRequired property, invoke the same method and in the 'else' condition and create a temporary variable and assign it the text of my control. But on that line, in the 'else' statement, inside the Invoking method i sometimes get the exception. What could be the cause? How to get rid of it? It does not occur often, but it is still a bug... When I change my system clock this changes the file /usr/share/zoneinfo immediately, HOWEVER, the actual system time doesn't change until the next reboot because /etc/localtime then re-reads /usr/share/zoneinfo? I have seen behaviour similar to the above, whereby /usr/share/zoneinfo/ was accessed but the system time did not change until after the system had rebooted

    This issue came up recently for me (and I've been prompted to lodge it as a specific question about it): My system is not dual-boot, I run a standard Ubuntu desktop system "on the metal" (I think running it in a VM is the same). Pressing "C" while booting does not cause the GRUB menu to appear (which I believe it does for a dual-boot system). How can I get the GRUB-menu to present itself on a single-boot system?

    I tried to view the superblock by command "dd" in ext3 file system. dd if=/dev/sda3 bs=4096 skip=1 count=1 of=superblock But the result in superblock file is not correct(I compare the value of Inodes count I got from dumpe2fs). The device file /dev/sda3 is started at the boot block and then the superblock of the group0? And another question is the boot block and superblock's size are both BLOCKSIZE(here is 4096)? The disk format of ext2/ext3(I think they are the same) are shown below:
