  • Why did visual programming never take off and what future paradigms might change that?

    - by Rego
As the number of "visual" OS's such as Android, iOS and the promised Windows 8 are becoming more popular, it does not seem to me that we programmers have new ways to code using these new technologies, due to a possible lack in new visual programming languages paradigms. I've seen several discussions about incompatibilities between the current coding development environment, and the new OS approaches from Windows 8, Android and other tablets OS's. I mean, today if we have a new tablet, it's almost a requirement for coding, to have, for instance, an external keyboard (due it seems to me it's very difficult to program using the touch screen), exactly because the coding assistance is not conceived to "write" thousands of lines of code. So, how advanced should be the "new" visual programming languages paradigms? Which characteristics these new paradigms would be required?

  • Do you enjoy 'Unit testing' ? [closed]

    - by jibin
Possible Duplicate: How have you made unit testing more enjoyable ? i mean we all are developers & we love coding.I love learning new stuff(languages, frameworks, even new domains like mobile/Tablet development). But Testing ? As a newbie to the corporate environment,I just can't digest it.(We follow 'write-then-manually-test pattern').is it unit testing ?.Usually a single developer handles a module(From design to code & unit testing). So is it practical ? Somebody tell me how to make unit testing fun ? Or just How to do it properly?Do we try all possibilities manually.Say unit test for a webpage with lot of 'javascript validations'. PS:projects are all web applications.

  • My Dog Ate My Surface

    - by Richard Jones
Working for a Microsoft partner I was very fortunate enough to be given clearance to order a Microsoft Surface RT tablet. Justification, show new device to a customer event this Thursday. All good, time to develop an App. Surface arrived last Wednesday. Overnight, Coco our much loved one year old puppy Larba-Doodle pulled the power chord out of my bag and bit right through the cable (at the power-brick end). A quick re-order to Microsoft saved the day. Demo went great. Surface is fab, Coco; much loved too Laptop bag now placed a bit higher up in our house.

  • How will the launcher/button work on a touch panel?

    - by burli
I'm not sure if Unity has a design problem. If the Launcher is hidden you can bring it to front by moving the mouse over the home button or hit the Super Key. So far, so good. But what is on Tablet Devices with touch panel? Intuitively I would "click" in the corner to show the launcher, but a click will open the Dash. How should that work on a touch device? Do I have to "drag" my finger into the corner? Will touch devices have a "menu button"? Will there be a gesture to show the launcher?

  • Hover alternatve for touch devices [migrated]

    - by Joshua Frank
I'm building a standard infographic where you mouse over a region and the image changes as you move. For instance, imagine a map of the world, and when you mouse over a country, that country glows and a panel shows statistics about that country. The implementation is to have a separate image for the glowing country, and a div element with the statistics, and the code shows these additional elements on a hover over the country. The question is: what should this do on a tablet, where there's no hover event? What's a good alternative navigation metaphor for this kind of situation on touch-only devices?

  • How to Create and Use Templates in Outlook 2010

    - by Taylor Gibb

  • Microsoft Office 2013 Takes New Approach

You can check out an article from Computerworld for a good look at the questions and answers about the new software. For instance, you've probably noticed that I'm not giving the full name. That's because Microsoft seems to be using several names. If you go the traditional route and pay the one-time upfront fee for the shrink-wrapped edition, it's Office 2013. There's also a tablet version called Office Home and Student 2013 RT - but that won't include the iPad, or at least not at first. The consumer preview, which I'll be linking to in a minute, is dubbed Office 365 Home Premium. There ...

  • Material usage, one per model or per object?

    - by WSkid
Is it better (memory, time (of developer), space) to use single model that is unwrapped and uses a single material or to break a model down into appropriate bits, each with their own smaller texture/material? Or does it depend on the target platform as to what is acceptable - ie PC vs tablet? An example: Say you have a typical house with a tiled roof. Model it, make sure everything is attached, unwrap the walls/roof so in your UV template the walls and roof would be in one texture file, side-by-side in say a 512x512 file. Model the roof/walls as separate objects, unwrap them individually and have two UV templates. You could then have a 256x256 file for each one.

  • hPalm and a web-centric strategy

The acquisition battle has come and gone, and it’s HP that’s become Palm’s new owner. In general this news has been greeted withgladcries, despite (or maybe because) it was so unexpected. In general everybody assumes that the marriage of Palm software and HP hardware will be a good one, and that HP will also release a webOS-based tablet device. However, there’s an interesting dissenting opinion on VisionMobile (a blog I highly recommend, by the way). • How do I disable/modify CPU underclocking due to temperature on a laptop with a 2nd generation core cpu?

    - by Tyson Marchuk
I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on a tablet with a Core i5-2557M processor. When doing processing intensive tasks the CPU is forcibly under-clocked to 800MHz (instead of the normal base of 1.7GHz.) The CPU temperature is around 75 C. I have disabled CPU scaling (set governor to performance) but this seems to have no effect. I would like to either modify the behavior so that the throttling happens at 95 C or I would like to disable it altogether. Changing the min/max frequency as root using cpufreq works until the temperature rises and then it ceases to work, ignoring a minimum frequency above the 800MHz. On Windows 7 there is a 3rd party utility that can do this (ThrottleStop). Thank you.

  • Phone complains that identical GLSL struct definition differs in vert/frag programs

    - by stephelton
When I provide the following struct definition in linked frag and vert shaders, my phone (Samsung Vibrant / Android 2.2) complains that the definition differs. struct Light { mediump vec3 _position; lowp vec4 _ambient; lowp vec4 _diffuse; lowp vec4 _specular; bool _isDirectional; mediump vec3 _attenuation; // constant, linear, and quadratic components }; uniform Light u_light; I know the struct is identical because its included from another file. These shaders work on a linux implementation and on my Android 3.0 tablet. Both shaders declare "precision mediump float;" The exact error is: Uniform variable u_light type/precision does not match in vertex and fragment shader Am I doing anything wrong here, or is my phone's implementation broken? Any advice (other than file a bug report?)

  • DIY Touch Screen Mod Makes Regular Gloves Smartphone-friendly

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Smartphone-friendly winter gloves are expensive (and often ugly). Skip shelling out for store-bought gloves when, armed with a needle and thread, you can turn any gloves into smartphone-friendly ones. Over at Popular Science, Taylor Kubota shares the simple trick: 1. Order silver-plated nylon thread (silver conducts electricity). This can be difficult to find in stores, but major online retailers carry it. 2. Pick a pair of gloves to modify. Although leather works, it’s harder to push a needle through. 3. Stitch the figure of a star or other solid shape onto the glove’s index finger with the thread, making sure it will contact both the touchscreen and your skin. • Is there any way to simulate a slow connection between my server and an iPad (without installing anything on the server)?

    - by Clay Nichols
Some of our webapp users have difficulty on slower connections. I"m trying to get a better idea of what that "speed barrier is" so I'd like to be able to test a variety of connection speeds. I've found ways to do this on Windows but no on the iPad, so I'm looking more for some sort of proxy service that'll work with any device (not running ON that device) I did find an article about using the CharlesProxy and providing a connection to another device, but I was hoping for something simpler (need not be free) Constraints * We are on a shared server so we can't install anything and we are limited in our control over that server. * I'd like to test an iPad, Android Tablet, Windows PC.

  • Windows 8 and "Formerly known as Metro" apps, an experience with PDF app

    - by Kevin Shyr
I'm slowing and surely getting used to Windows 8.  It is no doubt a slow process since I still run daily on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and 3 windows 7 box. A new quirk I found regarding Windows 8.  I never thought it was important to learn how to close a "formerly known as Metro" app (what do we call those these days?).  Then I attached a portable drive to my laptop and opened up a PDF file, and I couldn't safely remove the hard drive afterwards because I did not know how to close the PDF reader app. I have since learned that if you want to close an app, you can try Alt + F4 mouse over the top left corner and swipe down, right-click to close you app Windows Key + TAB, right-click to close the app All these make me wonder, how do you do this in a phone or tablet?

  • Blender 2.6: How to Merge the Pros of Meshes and Surfaces

    - by fridojet
there are two interesting kinds of objects: Meshes and Surfaces. Each of them offers very cool features. Object Type Specific Features Nice Features of Surfaces: (for example) They're as scalable as vector graphics (really nice!) You can build winding things real simply. Nice Features of Meshes: (for example) You can build organic things really good using the Sculpt Mode and a graphic tablet. You can use some special things like Physics. My Question There are things for which Surfaces are better and things for which Meshes are better. But how can I use both the best features of Surfaces and the best features of Meshes on one object at once? For example: How can I use Physics (like on Meshes) on lossless scalable objects (like Surfaces)? Thanks.
