  My server has developed an expected problem where I am unable to connect from a mail client. I've looked at the server logs and the only thing that looks to identify a problem are events like the following: Nov 23 18:32:43 hig3 dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=, method=PLAIN, rip=xxxxxxxx, lip=xxxxxxx, TLS Nov 23 18:32:55 hig3 postfix/smtpd[11653]: connect from xxxxxxx.co.uk[xxxxxxx] Nov 23 18:32:55 hig3 postfix/smtpd[11653]: warning: SASL authentication failure: cannot connect to saslauthd server: No such file or directory Nov 23 18:32:55 hig3 postfix/smtpd[11653]: warning: xxxxxxx.co.uk[xxxxxxxx]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed: generic failure Nov 23 18:32:56 hig3 postfix/smtpd[11653]: lost connection after AUTH from xxxxxxx.co.uk[xxxxxxx] Nov 23 18:32:56 hig3 postfix/smtpd[11653]: disconnect from xxxxxxx.co.uk[xxxxxxx] The problem is unusual, because just half an hour previously at my office, I was not being prompted for a correct username and password in my mail client. I haven't made any changes to the server, so I can't understand what would have happened to make this error occur. Searches for the error messages yield various results, with 'fixes' that I'm uncertain of (obviously don't want to make it worse or fix something that isn't broken). When I run testsaslauthd -u xxxxx -p xxxxxx I also get the following result: connect() : No such file or directory But when I run testsaslauthd -u xxxxx -p xxxxxx -f /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd/mux -s smtp I get: 0: OK "Success." I found those commands on another forum and am not entirely sure what they mean, but I'm hoping they might give an indication of where the problem might lie. If it makes any difference, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.1, Postfix 2.7.0 and Webmin/ Virtualmin.

• puppet master --compile logs errors to stdout

  I see a bug about this that was accepted and then closed a year ago: http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/3670 but I'm using puppet 2.7.14 and am getting the same issue. I'm trying to use "puppet solo" (i.e. just running puppet apply on each server to be configured) as I only have 2 or 3 servers in this project and adding another server as a puppetmaster would be completely overkill. Unless I'm mistaken, the best way to apply a node manually to a server is to do: puppet master --compile=mynode > catalog.json puppet apply --catalog catalog.json But the puppet master command outputs a couple of warnings and notices to stdout, mixed in with the desired json content. And it uses colored output so I can't just pipe it through egrep -v '^warning:' EDIT: I guess it's not too big of a deal to use grep - since puppet 2.7 pretty-prints the actual content and the warnings don't ever start with spaces, piping the output through egrep '^( |{|})' works So my questions are basically: Is there a better way than this to apply a puppet node without using a puppetmaster? I can't really find any good references online to using puppet without a puppetmaster, even though that seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do for a small project. Is there a setting or flag that I'm missing that will get puppet master to stop being an asshole and send its errors to stderr instead of stdout? Or do I really have to turn off color logging, then grep to exclude warning: and notice: lines?

• copSSH and cygwin - Can't use windows style paths

  I setup copSSH on one of my windows servers, and within the copSSH bash shell, I can't seem to use windows-style paths to remove and copy files. If I do try, I get the following: $ /bin/cp -r C:/Domains/_temp/collage_push/* C:/Domains/collage/ cygwin warning: MS-DOS style path detected: C:/Domains/_temp/collage_push/ Preferred POSIX equivalent is: /cygdrive/c/Domains/_temp/collage_push/ CYGWIN environment variable option "nodosfilewarning" turns off this warning. Consult the user's guide for more details about POSIX paths: http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/using.html#using-pathnames I have created a windows environment variable CYGWIN set to nodosfilewarning. It has no effect. I added export CYGWIN=nodosfilewarning to my .bashrc and doing a echo $CYGWIN in my ssh session confirms it is indeed getting set; yet again, it has no effect finally, I noted that when not doing my own export that CYGWIN contains "nontsec binmode" (no quotes), so I tried: export CYGWIN="nodosfilewarning nontsec binmode" in my .bashrc and still no dice. Older versions of CopSSH didn't have this issue. How can I actually override this error? I have a lot of scripts that already use windows-style paths, and I'd rather not change them if possible.

• Fedora 17 - Dropping into debug shell after attempted partitioning

  So I tried creating a new partition on Fedora 17 using fdisk as follows: Command (m for help): n Command action e extended p primary partition (1-4) p Partition number (1-4): 1 First cylinder (2048-823215039, default 2048): Using default value 2048 Last cylinder or +size or +sizeM or +sizeK (1-9039, default 9039): +15G Once this was done,instead of formatting the partition I created, I ran the partprobe command to write the changes to the partition table. On rebooting the computer, it drops to the debug shell and gives me the error as follows: dracut warning:unable to process initqueue dracut warning:/dev/disk/by-uuid/vg_mymachine does not exist dropping to debug shell dracut:/# While trying to run fsck on the said partition from the debug shell, it says "etc/fstab not found" and inside /etc I see a fstab.empty file. Is it now possible to retrieve what I have from the computer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Edit: I've also tried the following steps for additional troubleshooting: I tried to boot using the Fedora disk and tried the rescue mode - says no Linux partition detected. I tried to create an fstab file by combining the entries from blkid and the /etc/mtab file and using the UUIDs from the mtab file - It didn't work. As soon as I rebooted the machine, it promptly dropped me in to the debug shell and the fstab file which i created wansn't there anymore in /etc (part of this solution)

• Installing Silverstripe on 000webhost.com (free web host)

  Hi I'm trying to learn how to work Silverstripe so I extracted the tar file to my free hosting account. I then went on install.php and edited the permissions to meet the requirements set out in install.php but I still get two warnings from the 'webserver configuration' section: I can't tell what webserver you are running. Without Apache I can't tell if mod_rewrite is enabled. I can't tell whether mod_rewrite is running. You may need to configure a rewriting rule yourself. I looked in phpinfo() and mod_rewrite appears to be installed. I contacted the web host and they said it was to do with virtual directory paths, and I should add 'RewriteBase /' to the top of my .htaccess file in the public_html directory. However I did this and still had the same problem. The install.php script says that I can install it even with these warnings but when I press 'install' it just refreshes the install.php page. It doesn't even overwrite the .htaccess file. 000webhost.com says they have successfully installed Silverstripe on their user accounts without much configuration but I can't seem to find out how. EDIT: I managed to get to the next page but now there is another warning which is stopping it installing: Friendly URLs are not working. This is most likely because mod_rewrite isn't configuredcorrectly on your site. • Debian network bridge configuration - /etc/network/interfaces

  I'm running a Lenny Xen dom0 hosting multiple virtual machines in a routed IP setup. To get an additional private subnet, I created the bridge xenbr0 in the dom0 with the following commands: brctl addbr xenbr0 ifconfig xenbr0 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 ifconfig xenbr0 up This works as expected, and domU interfaces are added to the bridge by Xen on VM start. My only problem is: how the heck do i specify this configuration in /etc/network/interfaces that it remains permanent and the bridge is available after a reboot? I tried the following config as found on a lot of tutorials: auto xenbr0 iface xenbr0 inet static address 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 10.0.0.0 broadcast 10.0.0.255 bridge_stp no I get 2 different errors, depending on if the bridge already exists or not.   Whenever I use a secure proxy with Google Chrome I get ERR_PROXY_CERTIFICATE_INVALID, I tried a lot of different scenarios and versions. The proxy Then I start a secure proxy on localhost:8080. There are a several ways to accomplish this, I tried: a custom Node.js script; stunnel; node-spdyproxy (OK, this involves SPDY too, but later... the problem is the same); [...] The browser Then I run Google Chrome with: google-chrome --proxy-server=https://localhost:8080 http://superuser.com to load, say, http://superuser.com. The issue All I get is: Error 136 (net::ERR_PROXY_CERTIFICATE_INVALID): Unknown error. in the window, and something like: [13633:13639:1017/182333:ERROR:cert_verify_proc_nss.cc(790)] CERT_PKIXVerifyCert for localhost failed err=-8179 in the console. Note: this is not the big red warning that complains about insecure certificates. • Basic Apache setup is not seeing my site

  Sorry that is a horrible thread subject, but I cannot think of a better more descriptive subject. We are running a Fedora 11 server that is currently hosting some CRM on it. I want to use a VirtualHost directive to add another site to the server. So I created this conf: /etc/httpd/conf.d/mysite.ourdomain.com.conf And here is the content: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mysite.ourdomain.com DocumentRoot /www/mysite ServerAdmin [email protected] ErrorLog /var/log/mysite.ourdomain.com-error.log CustomLog /var/log/mysite.ourdomain.com-access.log common </VirtualHost> I restarted apache, getting the following warning: [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts From what I read, this warning is not related and I can ignore it and my site should still be up and running, correct? (I'll troubleshoot this error later if so) Well I have our DNS server setup to point mysite.ourdomain.com to goto this server. I can ping it and it points to the correct LAN IP, etc.. Now when I try to access it in the browswer I get nothing. It just says Connecting... and never gets there. If I try mysite.ourdomain.com or the IP address, neither one doesn't get there. It's a very simple and basic apache setup so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... Anyone have any clue where I should start or what settings I can post from httpd.conf that would help?

• Can one really fry a monitor by setting the wrong HorizSync and VertRefresh?

  I've encountered this problem on several different systems with several different monitors: a monitor functions perfectly under Windows. I install a Linux and the max resolution is at some impossibly low value, mostly 640x480, changing it in Xorg.conf doesn't work. The X.org log file then shows that the driver cannot determine the correct refresh rate for the monitor, so it ignores everything in Xorg.conf and just loads in some default minimalistic mode. Googling the problem leads to an easy solution: set the HorizSync and VertRefresh in Xorg.conf, and everything works. The problem seems to be a common one, and I've seen dozens of results recommending the solution. Each of them contains the warning that you should use the value ranges provided with the monitor. Because if you don't, and your video card sends a signal with the wrong refresh rate, this can damage your monitor. Of course, you don't have a user manual for your monitor any more. If you are lucky to find one on the attic or on the net, it doesn't contain any information about the supported refresh rate. So you just type in the value suggested in the solution description, which varies wildly depending on your source, and cross your fingers. You restart, and... ... you've set the wrong values. So the monitor shows a short message like "input signal out of range", and you do a hard restart, repair your Xorg.conf in recovery mode, and everything is fine, including your monitor. So does this warning reflect a real possibility, or is it just a geeky urban legend? Or is it something which used to happen in the past, before manufacturers started protecting the monitors against it? Is it technically possible with every monitor technology, or is it maybe something which can only happen to a CRT? If you think that it's true, why? Have you ever witnessed a monitor die from the wrong refresh config, or have you read of it in a reputable source?

• Win 7: apps crash, then explorer crashes, then services fail, then boom

  Periodically, every 2-3 days one of my systems will go haywire: every app will crash search will fail via the start menu and then explorer will fail. Restarting explorer via taskmanager will cause it to fail again, then it'll BSOD and restart. The eventlog for when this happens goes something like this every time: ERROR: Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached... (forget where I found out, but also 'not a problem') ERROR: Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (again, supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" has been reached... ERROR: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp:... ERROR: Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp:... ERROR: Faulting application name: svchost.exe_iphlpsvc, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp:... ERROR: The Service Name service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s) That last one happens a number of times but with a different service name. Then finally we have: ERROR: The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Server service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance of the service is already running. After that, I have my BSOD and logs complaining that windows started up without shutting down. It's a new machine: Intel i3 530 4gb RAM (Ran memtest for 4 hrs, no problems) 320GB WD/250GB Seagate HDDs (Happened on fresh installs on 2 separate HDDs) Win7 Pro/Ultimate x64 (wife's copy of pro, my copy of ult, no change) Fresh install + driver and windows update (happened without updates as well) I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I can look at next. Especially since it'll work like a charm for 2-3 days and then it's hooped for a night (I'm on it now in fact - no problems).

  We setup password Policies in Active Directory to Expire peoples passwords after so many days. Well it looks like the time has come for the Expiration of the Passwords and people are getting locked out... There has been no warning of user passwords about to expire. They just come in to work and they cannot log in, the phones no longer connect, nothing. Reset the password and all is good. Some of the users are locked out, though most are not, they just cannot log in. On setting the password Expiration, I didn't see anything about nor warning the users of the impending expiration. • How to create btrfs RAID-1 filesystem (assertion error in mkfs.btrfs)?

  I tried to make a btrfs RAID-1 filesystem in "degraded mode" by following the btrfs UseCases instructions but hit a fatal assertion error. Why is this failing, and is there any workaround? • Configure PEAR on CentOS 6 and PLESK

  I'm hoping to get a little assistance with configuring PEAR to work properly. I have a PHP file that's calling PEAR's mail and mail-mime files, and I believe I am missing some steps because I keep getting the very common Warning: include_once(Mail.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory Warning: include_once(Mail_Mime/mime.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory It is installed - Installed packages, channel pear.php.net: ========================================= Package Version State Archive_Tar 1.3.7 stable Console_Getopt 1.2.3 stable Mail 1.2.0 stable Mail_Mime 1.8.3 stable PEAR 1.9.4 stable Structures_Graph 1.0.4 stable XML_RPC 1.5.4 stable XML_Util 1.2.1 stable And according to this TUT, I need to configure it appropriately in each vhost. I have already gone through and adjusted the php.ini file, but when the TUT speaks of the php_admin_value open_basedir "/var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs:/tmp:/usr/share/pear:/local/PEAR" in my /var/www/vhosts/example.com/conf/httpd.include file I kind of get lost. There are several httpd.include files in that directory, all preceded with very long numerical strings. All I want to do is have an email attachment in my form.... Any insight or similar experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.

• RPM issues after signing JDK 1.6 64-bit

  I'm trying to sign the Java JDK 1.6u21 64-bit RPM on CentOS 5.5 for use with Spacewalk and I'm running into problems. It seems to sign okay, but then when I check the signature it seems to be missing the key I just used to sign it.
