  • ubuntu pptp connections from command line

    I'm using a lot of vpn connections daily for my work and I want to program a pptp dialer in python to ease my job a little bit by automating things. I usually go with network-manager-pptp to setup my connections but I would like to skip this gui tool and do it from the script. Something like a dialer. My question is. Can pptp connections be established using the command tools only? Also, where does network-manager-pptp saves its failes so I can take a look and see what configs it generates. Any help is much appreciated.

  • Condensing/abstracting the path shown on each line in PowerShell

    I've started using virtualenv for my Python projects. Since the working directory for my projects is now deeply nested, the path has started to take up half of my screen! Is it possible to somehow have PowerShell condense the path to the current working directory, from something like C:\Users\kRON\Desktop\Current work\Python\dsp\src to C:\Users\kRON\Deskto~1\Curren~2\Python\dsp\src or, better yet, to match C:\Users\kRON\Desktop\Current work\Python\and just replace it with ~python\?

    I use gVim 7.3.46 on Win 7. It is pretty straightforward to use argdo to search args files for a pattern and replace it while suppressing errors and requiring confirmation. :argdo %s/pattern/replace/gec | update However, I would like to delete entire lines that contain the pattern. I use the following. :argdo %/pattern/d | update But I can't suppress errors or require confirmation. Is there a way to do this? Thanks! (Also, is there a way to set "more" off? Thanks!)

    I've been Googleing for a few hours on how to just compress a file inside a directory and I can't find anything. I found how to just compress a folder in general. Now I wish to know how I can compress a folder in a folder with a file. Current code: 7zG.exe a -tzip "test.zip" dontcompressme/compressme/new.txt pause As you can see above, I don't want to compress the first folder, but only the second and what ever is within that folder. I have the 7zG.exe sitting in the main folder and I have some files that are three folders in, but I don't know how to only compress those. Here is my directory list: Folder One (don't compress) Folder Two (don't compress) Folder Three (okay to compress) Document One.txt (okay to compress) Document Two.txt (okay to compress) Index.html (okay to compress) Does anyone know how I can do this in the most simplest way ever invented by man? Cause whenever I go to a website using Google it goes throw all these methods on how to compress a folder, but not do it the way I wish it to do. It makes me kinda upset cause I can't get a simple and straight forward answer. Thank you if you answer my question.

    Many have said that the problem is with environment but I still can't seem to solve this problem. BTW I am using Ubuntu 9.10 login as user, then sudo -s using this command: s3cmd put file s3://bucket worked! now here is the simple script intended for testing: #! /bin/bash env >/tmp/cronjob.log s3cmd put file s3://bucket issuing the command crontab -e * * * * * /opt/script 2>&1 | logger Then using tail to syslogs Dec 3 23:22:01 ubuntu CRON[10795]: (root) CMD (/opt/script 2&1 | logger) But by verifying it on s3Fox Organizer, the file is not uploaded. (I tried changing the #! /bin/sh (no effect), putting crons on /etc/crontab (no effect), setting HOME=/home/user (no effect) What are other options to try? Or other ways to debug this problem.     So I have a table in MS Word which has two columns. In the second column the text is spread on multiple lines, ie I have pressed 'Enter' to achieve this. When I paste into Excel, it converts these separate lines into separate cells. What I want it to do is to keep the lines in the same cell, just on different lines, ie what would happen if I were to press Alt+Enter in a cell in excel. How would I go about this?

  • Switch between network configurations via command line in fedora 17

    I have two different setups I use on my work laptop; one enables synergy over an ethernet ssh tunnel with my work computer on the local network, and the other opens an HTTP tunnel to my work computer from outside the network. When I have wifi enabled at work, my laptop seems to use it by preference. This makes synergy run incredibly slowly. At home I must use wifi. I have scripts that begin my ssh tunnels, add my ssh keys, and starts up other programs like synergy, and close themselves when I shut my laptop. However, every day I have to start out my routine by opening my gnome-control-center and turning on my ethernet. I have tried route add and ifup, none of it works, so I dove into gnome-control-center's source code and found that it enabled the connection by libnm's method nm_client_activate_connection with some libnm specific structs that I am having trouble tracking down. I'm not much of a c programmer, and I'm not familiar with either GTK or libnm. Does anybody know what fedora 17 does with ethernet connections to fully enable them? Or does anybody know what libnm does to fully enable an ethernet connection? Do I have to write a c script to run libnm for me to fully emulate whatever gnome-control-center is trying to do?

    I'm building a Bash script for some tasks. One of those tasks is create a MySQL DB from within the same bash script. What I'm doing right now is creating two vars: one for store user name and the other for store password. This is the relevant part of my script: MYSQL_USER=root MYSQL_PASS=mypass_goes_here touch /tmp/$PROY.sql && echo "CREATE DATABASE $DB_NAME;" > /tmp/script.sql mysql --user=$MYSQL_USER --password="$MYSQL_PASS" < /tmp/script.sql rm -rf /tmp/script.sql But always get a error saying access denied for user root with NO PASSWORD, what I'm doing wrong? I need to do the same for PostgreSQL, any help? Regards and thanks in advance

    When installing CentOS (6.2), it installs a whole bunch of packages, but the installation is often very fast, it's hard to note the names of the packages. I have a couple of questions: 1) I'm guessing I could wait for the entire installation to complete and then query for the list of installed packages on the system. How do I do that? 2) Is there a printed list somewhere on the web, so I don't have to install the OS first just to get the list?

    I need to reinstall Windows on a laptop. I have the product key (its on the laptop), and I know it is Windows 7 Home Premium. I need a way to determine if 64-bit or 32-bit Windows is installed, so that I can download the correct one from Microsoft. The computer is messed up so I do not have access to Windows to check it with systeminfo. I took out the hard drive and hooked it to another computer, but when I run systeminfo it just gives information for the host computer, I did not see a way to change this.

    I'm following a video tutorial where the author (who uses textmate) can open files by using "mate". for example mate .git/config will open this config file I'm using textwrangler however so I don't have that option. I did try edit .README once when i tried to open the README file of an application, but it opened a blank README file in textwrangler instead of the file with the text in it so any idea how I can open this .git/config file (or any other file) using textwrangler? I'm using Mac snow leopard

    Is there a way to, in general, create a Windows shortcut to a file and instruct Windows to pass certain switches to the application before passing the filename? For example: I have an Excel file, abc.xlsx. If I want to create a shortcut to open this file read-only, I would change the target to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /r abc.xlsx, but this fails when another person on my network opens the shortcut and their EXCEL.EXE is not in that same folder. Surely there's a way to tell Windows to pass the /r switch without supplying the path/filename of the application that is supposed to open the file?

At the moment I make a text file and then make a launcher and point it to the file, but I want to delete the file and make the launcher run the commands directly.     Windows CMD shell - any easy way of redirecting the command itself into the output? If I do net localgroup administrators %computername%-admins.txt, I'd like the output file to contain the net statement as well. No powershell available to me; pure CMD/COMMAND only. This is for an audit; the auditors want to see what command generated the output. I'm trying to avoid screenshots or enormous copy-paste from CMD windows.
