• How can I make grub2 boot into Windows 7?

  I had Windows 7 installed on my system, then I installed Debian testing with grub2 as its boot manager. Initially I couldn't see windows entry in grub at all, so I ran: aptitude install os-prober kcpuload update-grub Now I can see the entry, but when I select it I get only Win7 system restore, instead of the the real thing. Any ides how to make it work? • Optimizing Apache for large file serving

  I have a random problem with Apache that I can't quite figure out, here is my setup, Windows Server 2008 R2, 64 Bit, 5GB RAM, SSD with 200 MB(Read/write) and Dual Core CPU @ 2.1 GHz A dump from mod-staus, Server Version: Apache/2.4.7 (Win32) mod_limitipconn/0.24 mod_antiloris/0.5.2 PHP/5.5.9 Server MPM: WinNT Apache Lounge VC11 Server Built: Nov 21 2013 20:13:01 Current Time: Thursday, 21-Aug-2014 23:38:06 W. Europe Daylight Time Restart Time: Thursday, 21-Aug-2014 20:30:47 W. Europe Daylight Time Parent Server Config. Generation: 1 Parent Server MPM Generation: 1 Server uptime: 3 hours 7 minutes 18 seconds Server load: -1.00 -1.00 -1.00 Total accesses: 283025 - Total Traffic: 1172.2 GB 25.2 requests/sec - 106.8 MB/second - 4.2 MB/request 62 requests currently being processed, 388 idle workers Serving large .zip & iso files using mod_xsendfile. (File size range 500 MB - 1.5 GB) The setup works and is running fine. CPU usage is very unstable, jumps all the time between 10% - 90% and the servers goes down when it hits 100%. In that case I have to hard restart the server. Server it outputting traffic at 30 Mbps. Is there anything else I should think about to get a more stable CPU usage? Is that CPU usage normal? Can switching to Linux help me achieve better CPU usage?

• Apache2 doesn't serve PHP-scripts correctly [closed]

  I've run into a problem with my Apache 2.2.16 configuration, running on Debian Squeeze. The problem is that it stopped serving PHP5-scripts completely. When I try to access the sites with Google Chrome, it instead downloads a file called "download", which contains the contents of the script. This is of course not a good thing. It does serve common html-files perfectly... I've been at this for quite a while now, and after all the googling and troubleshooting, I thought it would be a good time to ask you guys. Here's what I've got: The php5 and libapache2-mod-php5 packages are installed /etc/apache2/mods-available contains both php5.load and php5.conf, and these are symlinked from the mods-enabled directory The /etc/php5/ directory is left untouched since the installation. Here's the contents of /etc/apache2/mods-available/php.load: LoadModule php5_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so And /etc/apache2/mods-available/php.conf: <IfModule mod_php5.c> <FilesMatch "\.ph(p3?|tml)$"> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php </FilesMatch> <FilesMatch "\.phps$"> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php-source </FilesMatch> <IfModule mod_userdir.c> <Directory /home/*/public_html> php_admin_value engine Off </Directory> </IfModule> </IfModule> What am I missing? This is a server with modified virtual hosts and the like, so I might have changed some settings which causes this problem, but simply purging and reinstalling is not an option so far, since the configuration is quite extensive. • XAMPP server giving 404 error when requested by ipv4 connection

  This is in reference to a previous question that I asked and was answered by womble. http://serverfault.com/a/406280/127729 So, now we have the real DNS records, we can do some diagnosis. dig for both A and AAAA on akosiboybastos.broker.freenet6.net gives a valid response, with an appropriate address. Good. dig for both A and AAAA on bastosforum.strangled.net gives the same responses (with a CNAME response thrown in). Also good. This means that the problem is not DNS-related, as those records are in order. wget -6 bastosforum.strangled.net/ gives a 200 OK response. wget -4 bastosforum.strangled.net/ gives a 404 Not Found response. This means that your webserver is misconfigured so that it's not serving the response you desire on IPv4. Given that the initial DNS problem asked in this question has been solved, I would recommend posting a new question with relevant webserver-related configuration, if you can't determine the configuration error yourself. I am using XAMPP(latest version) running phpbb3.0.10 via ipv6 tunnel from freenet6 and my domain is akosiboybastos.broker.freenet6.com, nothing fancy with the installation just out of the box install(with a few cosmetic mod). Both ipv4 and ipv6 traffic can connect using that url, but when I try to put a CNAME record on my test domain which is bastosforum.strangled.net pointing it to akosiboybastos.broker.freenet6.com only ipv6 can connect. As suggested by womble, this is a misconfigured webserver. To be honest I don't know where to start checking on the server as it is fully working if you use the domain given by freenet6 (akosiboybastos.broker.freenet6.com), any info on how to go about this server issue is welcome as i'm really a noob when it comes to computers. regards boyb

• auth user and exec a node app only with apache?

  I couldn't find an answer on the web and I'm trying for days now so I hope that someone with more experience with apache can help me out. Iam writing an web editor and the user should be able to edit a file that is on the server in a directory the user has access to. The problem Iam facing is that I need to authenticate against the system users (shadow/passwd). So the user should be able to login whith a system account and then the node app which does all the logic should be started with the users rights. I hope to get this working without any additional script and only with Apache. I found out two things: I can use mod_auth_pam to authenticate the user There is a mod called suEXEC which can exec the node app with a specified user The problem is that I have to hard code which user is used by suEXEC but I want to decide when the user logs in. Is there any way to authenticate a user against the shadow/passwd and then exec a prog with the users rights? I dont want to run the node app as root and the user should only be able to access his own files. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Kodak

• Timestamp Updating Constantly on /dev/null

  I've been working on a problem with a /dev/null file on an AIX system (just for background it looks as though it was inadvertently deleted and recreated as a normal file by somebody), but in trying to determine what caused the problem, I noticed that the timestamp on it seems to update every minute. I've observed this on several AIX servers at my workplace. At present I can't entirely rule out this be something specific to the Application being used at my workplace, so I compared with CentOS and Debian based computers at home last night. The CentOS box, which runs 24 hours, had a mod time on /dev/null of around 4 days ago (during which time it was essentially just being used as a web browser and multimedia player, although it would have had active but essentially unused Apache, MySQL and VMM processes running in the background). The timestamp on /dev/null on the Debian machine, which was a just booted laptop, pretty much reflected the boot time, but I tested redirecting STDIN from, and STDOUT to it, and the modification time was unchanged (I'm not sure 100% sure if directing data to /dev/null constitutes "writing to it" in the way it would a normal file). So my question is essentially, could anybody please offer any advice with regards to what circumstances (permissions changes etc.. aside) might cause the timestamp on /dev/null to update? • Why would the Apache parent process restart silently?

  I run apache 2.2.9 with mpm prefork on debian lenny. Following http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/prefork.html, I would expect that there is one parent process, running as root and listening as configured, which would start child processes as defined by the Min/Max/etc. directives. I expect the children to be restarted as per MaxRequestsPerChild, but the parent process to stay put with one process id until I restart it manually. Out of a little paranoia, I started monitoring listening ports including process ids. I have a cron job every 20 minutes to run netstat -ap | grep LISTEN and diff the output. Sometimes (about once per day) I see a series of this: 8c8 < tcp6 0 0 [::]:www [::]:* LISTEN 6194/apache2 --- tcp6 0 0 [::]:www [::]:* LISTEN 6607/apache2 10c10 < tcp6 0 0 [::]:https [::]:* LISTEN 6194/apache2 --- tcp6 0 0 [::]:https [::]:* LISTEN 6607/apache2 Over a period of an hour or three, the parent would change its pid at least once every 20 minutes, without any explanation in the log files or any other hint that anything is going wrong. This is not what I expected. What am I missing?

• Can I host multiple sites with one Amazon EC2 instance [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Can you help me with my capacity planning? 2 answers I currently have VPS server and I pay around $75 per month and I get: 40GB HD 2Gb RAM 100GB BW 6 core cpu (but i dont use much) I have only one live website running and traffic is only max 100 user visit per day. I mostly do the my testing stuff and some of my inter sites for playing with coding. But I do need one server. I am thinking of moving to Amazon EC2 if the price diff is not so much because then I can learn some more stuff. I am thinking of getting the 3 years Heavy utilization Reserved instance because my server will be running all day and night. I tried their online caluclator with Medium Instance Heavy reserved for 3 years for EC2 it comes $31 per month(effective price) and for EBS and S3 , I think even if thats it $40 for all other stuff. I will be at no loss for what I am getting at present. Am i correct or I missed something?? Now In my current VPS I have Apache for PHP sites and MOD wsgi for python sites. I am not sure if I will be able to do all that stuff in Amazon EC2. Can I host python and PHP sites both in Amazon EC2 instance using Named Virtual Hosts and Ngnix

  I have a template for an email that I've put in a localized strings file, and I'm loading the string with the NSLocalizedString macro. I'd rather not make each line its own string with a unique key. In Objective-C, I can create a human-readable multiline string like so: NSString *email = @"Hello %@,\n" "\n" "Check out %@.\n" "\n" "Sincerely,\n" "\n" "%@"; I tried to put that in a .strings file with: "email" = "Hello %@,\n" "\n" "Check out %@.\n" "\n" "Sincerely,\n" "\n" "%@"; But I get the following error at build time: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. email-template.strings: Unexpected character " at line 1 Command /Developer/Library/Xcode/Plug-ins/CoreBuildTasks.xcplugin/Contents/Resources/copystrings failed with exit code 1 I can concatenate it all together like this: "email" = "Hello %@,\n\nCheck out %@.\n\nSincerely,\n\n%@"; But that will be a mess to maintain, particularly as the email gets longer. Is there a way to do this in a localized strings file? I've already tried adding backslashes at the end of each line, to no avail.

The data might be near hundred columns (few years), and some of the months need to be omitted. Any expert able to help on this? I had been spending whole day cracking my head on this. Worse come to worse I might have to manually copy and paste, that would probably took me a decade.

After the considerable effort to find that bug I've got to ask why would anyone ever want this behavior? I can see how this might be useful for macro magic, but then why is this a "feature" in a modern language like python? Have you ever used string literal concatenation in production code?

• nmake makefile, linking objects files in a subfolder

  My makefile defines a link command: prod_link = $(LINK) $(LINK_FLAGS) -o$(PROD_OUT) $(PROD_OBJS) where $(PROD_OBJS) is a list of object files of the form: PROD_OBJS = objfile1.obj objfile2.obj objfile3.obj ... objfileN.obj Now the makefile itself is at the root of my project directory. It gets messy to have object and listing files at the root, I'd like to put them in a subfolder. Building and outputing the obj files to a subfolder works, I'm doing it with suffixes and inference: .s.obj: $(ASSEMBLY) $(FLAGS) $*.s -o Objects\$*.obj The problem is to pass the Objects folder to the link command. I tried: prod_link = $(LINK) $(LINK_FLAGS) -o$(PROD_OUT) Objects\$(PROD_OBJS) but only the first file in the list of object files gets the folder's name. How can I pass the Objects subfolder to all files of my list $(PROD_OBJS)? EDIT I tried also PROD_OBJS = $(patsubst %.ss,Object\%.obj, $(PROD_SRC)) but got: makefile(51) : fatal error U1000: syntax error : ')' missing in macro invocation Stop. This is quite strange...

• Writing an Iron Python debugger

  As a learning exercise I'm writing myself a simple extension / plugin / macro framework using IronPython - I've gotten the basics working but I'd like to add some basic debugging support to make my script editor easier to work with. I've been hunting around on the internet a bit and I've found a couple of good resources on writing managed debuggers (including Mike Stall's excellent .Net Debugging blog and the MSDN documentaiton on the CLR Debugging API) - I understand that IronPython is essentially IL however apart from that I'm a tad lost on how to get started, in particular: Are there any significant differences between debugging a dynamic language (such as IronPython) to a static one (such as C#)? Do I need to execute my script in a special way to get IronPython to output suitable debugging information? Is debugging a script running inside the current process going to cause deadlocks, or does IronPython execute my script in a child process? Am I better off looking into how to produce a simple C# debugger first to get the general idea? (I'm not interested in the GUI aspect of making a debugger for now - I've already got a pretty good idea of how this might work)

• Linux Kernel - Refreshing VFS Dentry Cache

  I wrote a system call that opens a directory and gets the file object and the dentry struct. Im trying to list all entries including entries in subdirectories using the list_for_each() macro. The problem is its only displaying whats currently in the dentry cache. If I open the directory with nautilus then rerun the system call, all the entries are listed. • How to Increment Visual Studio build number using C++?

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 project that produces a file called: "Game-Release.exe". This was configured under Project Properties - C/C++ - Linker - General: $(OutDir)\$(ProjectName)-Release.exe I would like to take this a bit further by have an incrementing build number so I would have something which says: Game-Release-Build-1002.exe The number on the end should be an incrementing integer. I will be storing the build exe's on subversion so I think i would find this useful (although not necessary). Perhaps there is a built in macro in Visual Studio that could handle this. Quite possibly I was thinking I could have a text file with the build number in it and have the compiler read, use and increment the number in the file each time the project is built. My goal is however to make the process as automated as possible. What is the best way to accomplish this? If you offer an opinion, please also provide the code we can all share. Thnx.

• VBA: Read file from clipboard

  I'm trying to load a file in a VBA macro that has been copied from, say, an Explorer window. I can easily get the data from the clipboard using DataObject::GetFromClipboard, but the VBA interface to DataObject doesn't seem to have methods for working with any other formats than plain text. There are only GetText and SetText methods. If I can't get a file stream directly from the DataObject, the filename(s) would also do, so maybe GetText could be forced to return the name of a file placed on the clipboard? There is very little documentation to be found for VBA anywhere. :( Maybe someone could point me to an API wrapper class for VBA that has this sort of functionality?

  I'm looking for a macro that specified the exact version of the iPhone SDK used for compilation. This is needed because when compiling with (and only with) SDK 3.0, I need to add some additional code. __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED is not the right choice here, since it can be set by the user with parameter -mmacosx-version-min. For example, a user can compile with min version -mmacosx-version-min=3.0 in SDK 3.1, so a check for __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED == 30000 would be true, even if the user is compiling with SDK 3.1. • Proper use of Q_OBJECT?

  If I derive my class from QObject (or a subclass), the Qt documentation says that I have to put the Q_OBJECT macro into my class declaration. It also ways I need to "run the meta-object compiler" for my class. I have no idea how to do this. Is this something I need to add to the .pro file? Do I need to edit the makefile? This seems overly complicated for a simple derived class. I'm using Qt Creator.

• using Excel VBA, given the daily price of 50 stocks, choose 10 stocks such that they have the minumu

  The high-level goal is to choose 10 stocks that have the lowest correlation among one another, out of a pool of 50, so that I can have a well-diversified portfolio. I have managed to write some VBA macro to download the past 3 years of daily price data from Yahoo finance, and then compute the 50x50 correlation matrix (using the Correl function), using the daily close as the data. What I have tried so far is just some local-maximum heuristic: - For the two stocks that have the highest correlation with each other, remove one of them. Between the two, remove the one that has the higher average correlation with all the other stocks. - When I remove a stock from the pool, I just delete the correponding row and column, to give a smaller matrix. - Repeat until I have just 10 stocks remaining (a 10x10 matrix). I was wondering if there is some algorithm that already solves such a problem and gives the optimum solution?
