• new installation won't sync directories with my account

  I had a dual-boot arrangement on my desktop with 12.04 and 12.10 (testing). Last week, I managed to trash both and ended up re-installing both. After doing all the updates, I activated Ubuntu-one which worked just fine on the previous installations. On both 12.04 and 12.10, the Ubuntu-One window fails to show the folders for syncing and only syncs the Ubuntu-One folder. Adding a folder on my net book on which sync is working properly brings up a pop up on my desktop that tells me a new folder is available for syncing - but the Ubuntu window fails to show it. I have put a screenshot from my net book (working OK) and one from my desktop which shows the problem. Any suggestions please?

  I am working on my first major (several hundred pages) website design and development project. I want to create subdirectories for each of the website's categories, which in turn have their own subdirectories for easy user navigation. Example: website.com/directory. I am aware that by placing an index.html file within each directory, the browser automatically detects and navigates to that page, but that seems like a messy solution (having multiple index.html files, albeit in distinct folders), and I cannot imagine everyone does that. So my question is...how do you properly organize and use subdirectories?

• Gluing tiles together using imagemagick's montage command

  This seems like it might be a reasonably common question, so I'm going to ask it using as many keywords as I can think of! I have a bunch of (well, nine) tile jpegs, with standard tile filenames. Each jpeg is 220x175 pixels: (top row) tile_1_0_0.jpg tile_1_1_0.jpg tile_1_2_0.jpg (middle row) tile_1_0_1.jpg tile_1_1_1.jpg tile_1_2_1.jpg (bottom row) tile_1_0_2.jpg tile_1_1_2.jpg tile_1_2_2.jpg How can I use imagemagick/montage to 'glue' or join them all together to make a single, coherent image? I don't want to resize them at all, so I guess the final image should be 660x525. That would be montage with no framing, shadowing, bordering, etc - just the nine original images, glued together to make a single jpeg. I know it should be something along these lines, but I'm struggling with getting the order and sizing right: montage +frame +shadow +label -tile 3x3 -geometry <options> *.jpg joined.jpg

• Term for Production Rollback

  The firm I work at keeps a copy of the compiled source code on production. So basically on our Production server, we have two folders: ProductionServer\SourceCode\ ProductionServer\SourceCodeRollback\ The Rollback folder always contains one version older code. This is done so that on deployment nights, if something is wrong with the new code, the deployer(who is not familiar with source control software) has the older version to revert back to. My question is: Is there an official computer science term/nomenclature for the Rollback folder? Or is "Rollback" itself the official term?

  I was trying to install a new WSS v3 Sharepoint on a 64 bit Windows 2003 server today but the installation was giving some error saying i would need to allow ASP.NET 2.0 in the web server extension in IIS.  Looking at the IIS there was a ASP.NET 2.0 32 bit allowed but not for a 64 bit. I tried registering the aspnet_regiis but no luck by doing so: For the 32 bit verison %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i For the 64bit version %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i I get the error "The error indicates that IIS is in 32 bit mode, while this application is a 64 b it application and thus not compatible." The difference is the \Framework64 folders So my next guess was to find a way to disable the 32 bit and then allow the 64 bit version. And luckily enough i found this link    MS to the rescue So just ran : cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 0 and the registered the %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i and that was it

• How to reverse file ownership and permission settings

  I installed LAMP and WordPress on my system a week ago. Since I couldn't create Child Themes in WordPress and work with PHP folders for my other projects collocated in var/www without using Nautilus I wanted to solve the permissions issue. I hoped to bring a solution carrying out the commands on this page for my WordPress folder: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/FileSystemPermissions. This allowed me to play with any file in the folder like creating and modifying .css files through WP Admin, etc. But after a restart I discovered that I can't change DNS settings of my network connections in the list anymore because it is asking me the root password and even though I enter the password it doesn't let me do the action giving "insufficient privileges" error. Can you help me correct the mistake I possibily made during the configuration and, maybe, configure again the permission and ownership settings for var/www/somefolder as it is adviced to be configured under general circumstances?   I'm currently trying to find (and copy) all files and folder structure matching a specific pattern, in a specified directory and I'm so nearly there! Specifically, I want to recursively copy all folders not begining with a '_' character from a specified path. find /source/path/with/directories -maxdepth 1 -type d ! -name _\* -exec cp -R {} /destination/path \; In the /source/path/with/directories/ path are machine-specific directories beginning with '_' and others, and I'm only interested in copying the others. For a reason beyond me, the find command returns the /source/path/with/directories/ directory, and therefore copies its content, directories begining with '_' included. Anyone have a hint as to why that is? Thanks, Pascal

  I'm reading "Professional Team Foundation Server 2010" by Wrox, and in an advantages/disadvantages list, the said: "Like CVS, SVN makes use of .svn directories inside the source folders to store state of the local working copy, and to allow synchronization with the server. However, it can have the affect of polluting the local source tree, and can cause performance issues wiht very large projects or files." What does the bit about pollution mean? I've used SVN for C# & ASP.NET projects for a long time and haven't encountered any problems. What probably does this quote think I should have been watching out for?

  I'm new to Ubuntu and recently installed CrossOver Games Trial on Ubuntu 12.04, didn't like it, tried to uninstall it but simply refused to go away , so I just went on and deleted the folders in the File System. Problem is that now there are 4 icons left on the Unity Start Panel under "installed applications", and I don´t know how to remove it. Actually, could anyone tell me how to delete any shortcut that is created on the Start Panel? Is there a way to do it? Thank you very much!

  Just a quick note about an issue where JDeveloper no longer recognized an existing subversion working directory. Symptom:  JDeveloper Versioning menu offers to Version an Application that is already versioned in svn. Cause: The repository url contained in the hidden .svn folders of the working directory is no longer valid. Solution: Determine the correct url for the Subversion repository and update the .svn working directory.Fix the url contained in the svn folders of the working directory using the svn switch command.   Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 12.04 because of some previous problems. I had to recover files through Photorec. But it filled my whole disk overnight and didn't even finish. When I turn on my notebook, there's an error The system is runnning in low-graphics mode (don't know if it's somehow connected with it). I need to delete those recup_dir folders, but also I need to finish recovering and get through the error. So I'm absolutely desperate. I hope that I writed it ok. Thanks in advance.

• Clone Unity Dock for All Users?

  I've spent 3 days trying to figure out how to clone the Unity dock from my firstuser profile in Ubuntu 12.04 to all of the other profiles I'm hoping to create. I've read where the /etc/skel folder contents get populated to all new profiles but this doesn't seem to include the dock or the desktop folders and icons. I've also copied the entire contents of my /home/firstuser folder to my /home/seconduser folder (including .* files) but the dock is still showing the stock icons and not the icons I've designated in my firstuser profile dock. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Separating portion of website to its own server

  So my job is to take the homepage (or maybe I should say "homesite" because it encompasses a few interrelated pages) and drag this onto its own Apache server. The problem I'm having right now is being able to weed out jumbled/bundled files (such as folders of js, css, and other files that i cant even identify) and knowing what is necessary to keep the homesite running. I'm new to this stuff (I'm an intern) so feel free to ask questions if I'm leaving vital information out. What I'm asking of you guys here is basically any pointers or tips you may be able to give me in order to get the job done. I could use some advice from people with a little more experience in web development. btw: This question may appear as though I have not completed any prior research and that is, for the most part, true. • What can I change/investigate where the install does not complete?

  I have already successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and it works fine. I attempted to get my desktop PC to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu but found that neither the 32 or 64 bit install images will boot/install successfully. The startup script locks on 'initializing core #2' (or 1 or 3).. once I saw it say 'ok' at the end but it still locks there. I have tried to change the boot sequence by inserting 'debug' and 'acpi-off' into txt.cfg in both isolinux and syslinux folders but no changes were obvious during the boot.. as far as it got. The pc is built with an abit IP35 motherboard and nvidia 8600GT gfx card. Does anyone have any suggestion of what else I can change to get the install working?

  Yesterday I came across this question: How can i call robocopy within a python script to bulk copy multiple folders?, and I though it might be a good exercise for multithreading. I though of spawning as many threads as files needed to be copied, each routine having an exception handling system to prevent the whole copying process from crashing (and log -using mutex on the log file - if there was an error). My question: Is there a limit on the number of thread you can spawn almost simultaneously? If yes, what is the limiting factor? My question is focused on PC desktop, but I welcome any answer on different hardware (embedded systems, calculus clusters, etc.).

• Does saving my progress on a U1-synced file/folder put unneccesary strain on the servers?

  I love Ubuntu One and I use it all the time. I have my documents and music composition folders set to sync. It's been a real boon. However, sometimes I feel that constantly saving my progress forces the file to sync dozens and dozens of times to the servers. It seems wasteful to me so I've been disconnecting U1 until I'm finished working on a project. Is this an unnecessary action that I am taking? I know it's using Amazon's storage but I'm still paranoid that I'm costing Canonical money when I constantly save my progress.

• Dash search does not show applications

  Since the upgrade (actually a fresh install) to 13.10, many times, when I open Dash and search for an application I only get results for files and folders. Sometimes I get some applications but not others. I haven't found a pattern to replicate the issue 100%. If I open the application lens and search again, it works as it should. So many times, to launch an application, I have to use the super + a key combination to open the application scope instead of the simply the super key. It is annoying. Did anyone have the same issue? I searched for bugs on launchpad but didn't find any. I didn't open a bug report yet because it is not clear how to reproduce the problem faithfully. Even more importantly, does anyone have a solution to this issue?

• Methods for making R plots look like Excel plots?

  I've been poking around with R graphical parameters trying to make my plots look a little more professional (e.g., las=1, bty="n" usually help). But not quite there. Started playing with tikzDevice. A huge improvement! Amazing how much better things look when the font sizes and styles in the figure match those of the surrounding document. Still, not quite there. What I'm ultimately looking for are those professional gradient shading, rounded corners, and shadow effects found in MS Excel plots. I know they're probably considered chart junk, but I like them. They're just nice looking. Q: How can I get these effects into my R plots? Do people usually just export to Inkscape and doodle over there? It would be nice if there were a literate programming approach. Is there an R package that handles these effects outright?

  In this SO question, someone asked for calculating an angle from three points. I need to do the opposite thing. I want to draw a clock, and I have tiny tick images. An art dude made 60 of them, each with an individual and accurate shadow. So there are 60 distinct images at 10x10 points in size, already correctly rotated in the center of that square. So every 6 degrees one tick image has to be placed. I would just need to calculate the x/y coordinate based on a center point, an radius and an angle. So I have: an center point an radius an angle Is there an easy way to calculate the x/y coordinate with this? Maybe cocoa-touch already has a useful function or method for this?
