  I have one PC running iTunes, my iPhone, and one iPod for each of three kids. Ideally I would like the iPhone to use my iCloud account and each iPod to use an iCloud account specific to each kid. According to Apple: You can ... use one Apple ID for iCloud services and another Apple ID for store purchases However, the method described Enter the Apple ID you want to use for iCloud in Control Panel Network and Internet iCloud. Enter the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases (including iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match) in iTunes iTunes Store. would require that all iOS devices share the same iCloud account if they use iTunes on the same PC. Short of having one PC per family member, is there a method to use different iCloud accounts on each iOS device?

  Hi. So, long story short, some days ago I pusblished an iPhone game, I think the game wasnt that bad tbh, and still I got only 10 sells at $0.99. Are they any publishers, sponsors, or distributors to make your game "visible" on the app store market?, or the only thing you need is to have an amazing game and thats all? Somehow I think that even if you have an awesome game if you dont do that "marketing magic" correctly you will not exist in the store. That is, is there a general command that does something like the following, provided that HOME=/home/user1 /home/user1 ? ~ /home/user1/a/1 ? ~/a/1 /home/user2/b/2 ? ~user2/b/2 /root ? ~root Sure, I could try something ugly with sed, but that is unlikely to give me the result I want in any case. :-) The movitation behind this is that I would like to keep the titles in the tabs of my terminals as short as possible, hence abbreviate working directories where possible.

• Giving a scanner-printer-combo a zoom function when copying ?

  You know how everytime you go to a photocopying shop, photocopiers always have a neat zoom function (it can take whatever you give it, and zoom it in/out, so your copy comes out smaller or larger). I got one of those neat 3-in-one printer machines. It has a copy button on it, but it also has some software that comes with it (Epson SX115 to be exact is the model). Apart from going into some photo manipulation application, is there some way (software) to give it that feature. So, in short, I need something that can scan a page, scale it to let's say, a quarter of its size, and then print it out ? Anyone knows of anything like that ?

• Creating Arrows Easily for Images

  I'm looking for a plugin or something along those lines for creating arrows for an image I'm working on. Basically it's just a screenshot of some software, but I want to annotate it and have arrows on it pointing to the various components. It should look something like this or even something simpler. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be an easy, free way of creating good arrows for any of the screenshots, short of importing actual images of arrows! I prefer to use: GIMP Paint.NET Other free software (beer or freedom, whichever) What are my alternatives? I really want to stay away from Photoshop on this. Thanks.

• firefox addons and their silly news tabs

  Something like 30% of the addons I have in firefox update every other week and feel the need to pop open a tab about how awesome they are and all the cool things they changed. I just don't care at all and I'm very annoyed by these news tabs. When firefox opens, I want to see my home page. I've been looking for an addon to disable or kill them before I even have to look at them. Rather like addblock-for-addons. Short of finding a plugin that disables them, I'm seeking information about common interfaces so I can try to figure it out on my own. I'm wondering if I could do it in greasemonkey somehow. For example, is there something common about the url for the tabs?

• Public IP shows strange characters and Facebook registers logged-in session to a different location

  I'm encountering some IP strangeness today and hoping to find an explanation. In short, I'm based in Seattle, WA with my ISP being Comcast. While browsing Facebook's account settings, I noticed that my active session was located to Mount Laurel, NJ. At that point I ran a search in Google for 'my public IP', which returned an interesting result: a string of characters in the following format: 2601:8:b000:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx Normally, a search for my IP returns something like: 67.xxx.xx.xxx A phone call to Comcast got me nowhere, but using Comcast's phone-menu debugging tools, I was able to send a 'refresh signal' to my modem. After that, the search for 'my public IP' yielded the expected result... for about 5 minutes, and then it returned to the new string of characters. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?

• How Do I Change the Windows7 LAN Proxy Config from the Command Line

  In Windows7, Is it possible to define/change the proxy config from the command line ? So, using the gui, I would go: Start Control Panel Network and Internet Internet Options Connections LAN Settings and then - enable/disable the proxy - define IP:port of proxy server But I would like to rather do this from the command line (so that I can run the command from a batch-file with a shortcut key - enabling me to switch proxy configs using a short-cut, rather than having to wade through the MS wizard). I've looked at using netsh.exe to change the settings for WinHTTP, but this seems to be thr wrong thing to do, as the WinHTTP setting do not appear to be related to the LAN settings. Much appreciated folks.

• Laptop charger dying after plugging in?

  My laptop charger's transformer has a green light on it that indicates that it's plugged in and working. When I plug it into the wall, the light goes on as expected. As soon as I plug it into the laptop, the light immediately turns off and my laptop doesn't get any charge. After that, the charger's light doesn't turn green again, even though it is still plugged into an outlet. I need to unplug it from the wall and wait a few minutes. It's strange - unplugging and immediately re-plugging it does not bring back the charge; I have to wait. Is this a charger issue or a laptop issue? Edit: Hooked the charger into a voltmeter and power went through fine. I guess this means that it's a short in my laptop itself. What are my options now?

• Laptop touchpad works incorrect when on power supply

  My original laptop adapter broke down, so I've baught a new one. It's a no-brand adapter from a dutch internet shop. The power of the new adapter is slightly more than the old adapter, but in my opinion that shouldn't be a problem. The laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite L40-15B. When the old adapter broke down due to short circuit, this laptop was connected. When the adapter is unplugged, the touchpad works correctly and smoothly. But as soon as it is connected, the cursor moves jumpy, and response badly. Does anyone know where this problem comes from, and if there's a solution?

• On RouterOS, how will transparent proxying (with DNAT) affect reporting of netflows?

  I have a box running Mikrotik RouterOS, which is set up to do transparent web proxying, as described here. In short, this means that I have a firewall rule for destination NAT causing any port 80 traffic to get redirected to port 8080 on the router, which is received by the Mikrotik local web proxy. The local web proxy then makes the web request on the client's behalf, in this case to a parent web proxy server (which in turn does the real web request). My question is, how will this two-part process get reported in the logging of traffic flow information (netflows)? Looking at the logged information, what I seem to be seeing is this: One flow recorded from client machine (private IP) to remote proxy (8080) Another flow recorded from router to remote proxy (8080) The original request that the client made to port 80 isn't recorded. I want to write code to analyse traffic usage, so I want to be sure I'm not losing information if I discard the latter of these.

• Force running a program as non-administrator in Vista

  I've just installed, on Vista 32-bit, a program which in my opinion shouldn't require administrator rights. It's not installed in a system directory, and its purpose shouldn't obviously require any special privileges. However, the .exe has a UAC shield on it, and it asks me to elevate privileges immediately upon execution. I'm prepared to risk it doing nasty things with the privileges of my user account, but not prepared to risk elevating it. Is there anything I can do short of setting up a virtual machine for it (or downloading the source and compiling it myself)? (FWIW, the program in question is Pencil - pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/Downloads/Application.aspx - but I'm more interested in general answers than app-specific ones).

• Wake computer from sleep/standby without BIOS support for WOL?

  Just bought a new home server and the nice folks at HP disabled the Wake-On-Lan feature in my motherboard. Are there any other options for waking the computer from Sleep/Standby mode? I'd like to take advantage of power savings wherever I can. I realize that I won't be able to wake it from shutdown, short of putting together some Rube Goldberg machine. EDIT: I'd like to be able to wake the machine on demand, remotely. So I can then RDP into it, or access files, etc.

• Dell Latitude E4300 TouchPad - Odd Behavior

  I'm seeing some intermittent behavior on the touchpad. First it wasn't working at all. Then during restart, for a little while it seemed like the buttons attached to the joystick and external mouse were both swapped left/right. Then I went in to the dell touchpad control and disabled the touchpad and re-enabled it and nothing happened. Then a short while after disabling the joystick the touch pad started working. So I restarted to see if it would keep the settings and before login, the touchpad appeared to work, then after login it stopped working for a few minutes while login continued. Then after the login was almost completed it started to work again. It appeared to have retained the settings for the disabled joystick. It seems like perhaps there are conflicting mouse drivers trying to simultaneously or similar. This doesn't seem normal for the touchpad to be disabled for so long after login. What steps should I take to ensure the drivers are right?

• Add a hook to run when NetworkManager connects

  What would be a good way to make a script run every time my computer connects to the network in Ubuntu? Would I somehow use dbus to do this? Background: when I'm on the train I run a short Perl script to click a button on the splash page. That way I can immediately use the internet without having to manually visit a pointless website. My script is a near-perfect solution, but it would be perfect if it could run automatically any time I connect to the network.

• Weird (?) issue with Exchange Forwarding

  Hello everyone. Here is the long and short of it: the company I work for was purchased by another company who uses Gmail for domains as their email provider. We use an in house Exchange box. No big deal, I dropped into Active Directoy and created several Contact objects that represented our new email addresses at Gmail. I then went through each employees record and have their mail set to forward to this new address and not deliver locally. So I am forwarding email for me@domain1 to me@domain2 and this works great as long as I don't send an email from me@domain2 to me@domain1. If I log into my personal Gmail account and send an email to me@domain1 the email is properly forwarded to me@domain2. The mail coming from me@domain2 to me@domain1 seems to just get lost in the ether. Have I done something wrong or is this a quark with Exchange? Thanks!

• Sporadic disk clicking sound

  Hi, I'm having some unusual and sporadic hard disk clicking issues. Here is a cronological description of the facts. I'm using an ASUS P6T-SE with Intel Core i7, 6Gb RAM 600W Power supply and ATI4670 graphics, running Ubuntu 10.10. About one month ago my hard disk (SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200 rpm) started making a clicking sound: a sort of loud tic-tac, every second or so, when involved in disk activity. The system was clearly slower than before at disk access, but it was functional and I could not find any signal of trouble on the linux logs. I disconnected the disk and tried an older SATA drive I had around: no problem with it. Then I reconnected the Seagate disk, and the problem was mysteriously gone. Ubuntu booted normally, usual speed, no clicking. A couple of weeks later, the problem reappeared. I tried disconnecting reconnecting (as it somehow solved the problem before) without luck. So, despite it was a rather new drive, I assumed it was a hardware issue, made backups and bought a new drive. The new drive is a SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Tb 7200 rpm. I installed both drives at the same time, with the intention of transferring my files from on to the other. To my surprise, when I booted the computer with both drives, both started making the clicking sound !! Even worse, I removed the old drive, leaving the unformated new drive connected, and booted from a LiveCD. It kept clicking ! Puzzled by this, I tried both drives on my laptop with a SATA to USB cable. At the moment I connected any of them, they made one or two unusual clicks and immediately stopped doing that and worked normally. The old drive I thought almost dead, was working like a charm as if nothing happened. Then I thought: "ok, it must be the motherboard. Let's try again". So, I reconnected the old drive to the ASUS P6T motherboard (the same cables and SATA port as before), and it worked as if nothing happened ! The problem was gone again. The new 1.5 Tb drive was also working ok: No clicking nor slowdown. So I left the old 1Tb disk connected and kept using the computer daily during 3 weeks, until today it happened again. Now I don't really know what to do or check. I'm not even sure if it is a hardware issue any more ! This is rather annoying as it seems it happens with a period of 2 or 3 weeks and I have no means of forcing it to happen. Does anyone have a clue of what can causes this behaviour or have any suggestions of things I should check when it happens again ? • What is a easiest way to implement Mail Server in ubuntu and hook in webmail through XAMPP?

  Hi Everyone, I currently have xampp running on my ubuntu server. I tried a variety of things including installing, postfix+dovecot+roundcube+postfixadmin (postfix+dovecot work I think, postfix admin also works, roundcube works and connects to dovecot but i cant create user accounts, or figure out how that works), citadel (it installed, but I have no idea how to make it work with xampp for webmail) and i tried messing with exim and vexim a bit also. In short I feel like this should be a lot easier, and I can't figure it out haha. XAMPP works fine. I got my server running with everything. I was thinking about mercury mail, but I need a webmail solution also. I was thinking about google apps, but 50 bucks a year per user is a steep change from free. Thanks for the help!

• Why do Cisco IOS routers hang in the middle of large downloads?

  After a few years in use. We have seen Cisco 871 and 851 routers that would hang if you had a single download that was more than 100M large. It is intermittent. Sometimes the problem goes away, sometimes it happens on very small downloads (just a 10KB web page). It seems that the just about all the downloads eventually finish, but the bigger the download the longer the hang. Is there a way to resolve this? (short of router replacement which is what we have been doing)

• Rail's FileStore with Linux Disk Caching or RAMdisk?

  I have a Ruby on Rails application that stores it's catched files on the filesystem (Rails file-system cache). I was thinking about changing to memcached Store, but a short test shows it isn't a big difference in speed. From linuxatemyram.com I learned a bit about file caching. On the current machine there would be around 40..45GB RAM left which isn't needed for the application and which can be used to linux-disk-cache this rails file cache store. The disk is a RAID10 system with almost 120MB disk perfomance. How can I tell Linux to use free RAM more deliberately and not to be shy about using it? Do think it's necessary to adjust a sysyctl/.. value here, or would I have performance advantages to put the File Store root diretory on a ramdisk? (Loosing the cache during a reboot wouldn't be a problem)

• mac osx script - find mounted disc with name, copy file from desktop to it, when copy complete, unmount disc

  Is there some kind of mac script which finds a newly mounted disc drive that has the name 'EXAMPLE', then copies a file/folder to it and safely ejects the disc when copy has finished? I don't mind if the script needs to be executed by a short cut. And will it work if there are multiple drives plugged in? The reason I am asking is becuase i have 5000 usb memory sticks that I need to copy about 20mb worth of data to it. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

• Configure spamassassin to mark very similar messages as spam

  Users on my server have been receiving spam, consistently, for some time now. I have most of spamassassin's plugins enabled, and I have made sure to enable verbose logging, where I can see that all of the plugins are working. Why is it, then, that my users are able to receive the same exact junk mail several times in a day without the message being flagged in some way? Here are the relevant headers of an email that I personally have received several copies of: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.3.1 (2010-03-16) on sub.domain.tld X-Spam-Level: *** X-Spam-Status: No, score=3.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_50,FSL_HELO_NON_FQDN_1, HELO_NO_DOMAIN,HTML_MESSAGE,RCVD_IN_BRBL_LASTEXT,RDNS_NONE autolearn=no version=3.3.1 Have I accidentally missed the plugin that can see that I, and others, have received the same message multiple times in a short period of time?

• Visual Studio 2010 haunted keyboard

  It seems the haunted keyboard is back in VS2010 ... after working on a web application for a short while I find that some keys just don't work, or are behaving like certain keys are stuck. This is only in VS, and I am definitely not triggering any keyboard changes in VS or Windows (I have disabled that in Windows) and I have reset my environment settings several times. Aargh! This is so frustrating ... anyone else getting this problem? Is there a solution?

• CD/DVD Drive not detecting locally burned CD/DVDs, but works fine with Genuine discs.

  I'm using Dell Inspiron 1420 - 32 Bit - Windows Vista, since 2.5 years. I'm facing a strange problem with my CD/DVD-drive. I cannot run/play a CD/DVD which I get burned from my friends. But when I insert Genuine CD, I'm able to play/run it. And when I try to install my Vista package which I got with my notebook, the CD/DVD gets loaded. If I insert a CD/DVD which I get from my friend, CD doesn't get loaded and the system gets hanged. But all these CDs/DVDs work on other systems. I've tested it on many of my friends PCs. So, now I'm able to run only genuine CDs & a few genuine DVDs. My Experience/Experiments: I tried to install Windows Vista using Genuine DVD - It worked I tried to install Ubuntu which I got from shipped from Canonical Ltd. - It worked I tried to install OpenSUSE .iso file burned to a DVD in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs(Tested in 4 other PCs) Tried to play a DVD containing movies, burned in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
