• Maintaining SQL Server default trace historical events for analysis and reporting

  I often see questions online where someone wants to find out who started a trace, when tempdb last had an autogrow event, or when the last full backup for master occurred. Since these and other events are captured by the default trace, but the default trace only keeps five 20MB rollover files by default. This means that the event you are after may no longer be there, depending on how long ago it was and how busy your server happens to be. • Can casper use a squashfs in the initrd?

  I've built a very large initrd containing a full squashfs from a desktop image, and used it to boot a machine over PXE. Unfortunately, casper cannot seem to locate the squashfs, since it's not present on any of the block devices it scans. Is there some way I can force it to check the initrd, or point to a filesystem location there in the bootfrom parameter? I've tried using bootfrom=/ with the casper directory in the root of the initrd, and that didn't seem to work.

• How can I stop the panel from showing on an external projector/monitor?

  In Ubuntu 10.10 (and possibly previous versions), when I connected my laptop to an external source (monitor/projector) and set it not to clone my desktop the display on the external source would not show the (gnome-)panel (just a full-screen desktop with no icons). Since upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 (using Unity) when I now connect the external source has the panel on there. Is there any way to revert to the previous behaviour in 11.04?

• Wired connection not being recognized

  I'm on Ubuntu Maverick (10.10). I've read a few threads regarding wired connection problems, but haven't found a solution yet. The problem appears after I connect to a wireless network. When I disconnect wireless and plug in an internet cable, the wired connection is not recognized at all. Even the socket appears dead (there are no diodes flashing). The only solution so far seems to be restarting the computer. Network Manager then tries to connect to a Wi-Fi, but the wired connection is listed and working. I've tried sudo restart network-manager, but that doesn't solve anything. After a while, available wireless networks start appearing, but the wired still doesn't. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. • Pathfinding in Warcraft 1

  Dijkstra and A* are all nice and popular but what kind of algorithm was used in Warcraft 1 for pathfinding? I remember that the enemy could get trapped in bowl-like caverns which means there were (most probably) no full-path calculations from "start to end". If I recall correctly, the algorithm could be something like this: A) Move towards enemy until success or hitting a wall B) If blocked by a wall, follow the wall until you can move towards the enemy without being blocked and then do A) But I'd like to know, if someone knows :-)
