Anybody aware of a piece of software which could do MS Office .doc to .pdf conversion for me?
I already tried OpenOffice but it appeared to be rather slow and resource-hungry for large documents.
I need a software (Windows 7 32bit) to help me in this process:
I have my documents, music, video clips, movies, pictures in my hard disk. These will not be scattered around the system. But will be inside C:\Senthil\
At the end of every week, I want to plug in an external hard disk and run a software that should make sure whatever is inside C:\Senthil\ is also present in the external disk. Files deleted from C:\Senthil\ should be deleted there, and new files should be copied etc... at the end of the process, every bit inside the source folder in my internal disk should be inside my external disk.
A couple of important requirements and points:
I do NOT need multiple versions or historic versions. I don't need the previous versions of my files. I only want the latest copy to be present in my "backup".
Incremental backup makes sense. If files were not touched since the last backup, it need not copy.
The size of my folder will run into GBs and in a year or two will go into TBs. But I will make sure the size of the external HDD is equal to or bigger than my source folder.
I do not want it to run automatically because when I accidentally delete a file in my source, it will delete the one in the backup (I know this is why we have versioning facilities). I just want to be able to run it manually so that I am in control of when the backup is made and what is backed up and I should be able to pick something from the backup and restore it to the source folder in the above situation.
Is there any software that will let me do exactly this? I don't want any other "smart" facility of the software to interfere with this process. I know what I want and the software can keep its smartness to itself :D
The main reason I am asking this question is, I am a software developer and I can write this software myself. But I am a little constrained by time at the moment and I want to know if there is an existing program that can do this.
Kindly don't worry about earthquakes or fire or snowstorms and bring up the "in case of a natural disaster your backup will also be in the damage zone and will be lost" argument because:
I will have bigger things to worry about than my holiday memories.
I don't think I will digitally store any life-ruining documents.
This backup is only to avoid the inconvenience of obtaining a new copy of stuff that I have. Not to protect them against the end of the world.
I am more worried about power surges in my area frying my system, hard disk failure, children who merrily hit Delete or teens who hit Shift + Delete or myself getting a little careless at times!
In short: Is there a file/folder syncing software that listens to what I say and doesn't try to act smart?
Please forgive me if I sound arrogant :)
I created a partition in my hard disk for my data (documents, multimedia, etc.).
How can I:
Move the /home/ directory to the new partition
Make the OS (Ubuntu Linux) treat that directory as the default /home/.
Is there any legal reason why you can't use the Home versions of Windows 7 or Vista in a business environment?
The technical differences and limitations are well documented online but I can't find anything that says there is a legal restriction like there is for the Home editions of Microsoft Office.
Hi.... don't know why but I deleted the "my music" folder from my documents.
Its not in the recycling bin. I didn't have anything in it as yet.
Any suggestions how to get the folder back?
Many thanks. Amanda
I am giving a lightning talk shortly and need to put together some slides. It is a technical talk about Perl documentation. I will be using a OS X machine to run the presentation software.
I would like something that is
minimalistic
easy to publish to the web
simple to control (forward and back should do it, but hotkey access to individual slides would be nice)
simple to create slides for (preferably purely text based and doesn't require much in the way of markup)
when i was trying to install emacs on Linux Ubuntu .I used to search emacs in add/Remove search toolbar it shows Emacs 22 ..i have double clicked that emacs it shows the following error.
Emacs 22 (GTK)
Canonical Ltd. provides technical support and security updates for Emacs 22 (GTK)
Emacs 22 (GTK) cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.
I have a local network set up for my small office which consists of me, the manager, my wife, the secretary, and a few sales people/others. I would like to share passwords over the network and other such things privately to my wife, the secretary, but would not like the sales people and others to have access to it, yet I need the others to have access to other folders/documents that I'd like to share. How would I go about doing this if not by password?
Thanks in advance
I've found all my Outlook data files which contain all my emails at the following paths:
C:\Users\C\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
C:\Users\C\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook
and
C:\Users\C\My Documents\Outlook Files\
I've migrated all these and copied it to my new machine at the same directories however my configuration is not there! None of my email pop/smtp settings are there, only the pst is loaded with my emails but all other configuration is gone, where precisely is that configuration stored?
I'm just learning to use sftp, and I want to copy a directory from the remote computer to my local computer. If I try
get [directory]
it gives me this error:
Cannot download non-regular file: /home/mpirocch/Documents
get -R doesn't work, either.
In word 2007 I click office button top left I click open, I get the open box, in the top address bar, I if I click on the down arrow far right (previous Locations) the drop down menu is empty just a box with nothing in it. To go anywhere from here I have to navigate via the left had pane, on all other windows systems this dropdown has enabled me to go to any location on my computer. I'm wondering if because all my word documents are on my D drive that windows 7 doesn't like it.
Hi,
I have a 2 1.5TB drives containing numerous video, audio, documents etc that I would like to essentially mirror to 2 other drives for backup. I would like to do this using rsync (as it seems the most appropriate thing to use).
What command should I use to do so? Is there anything to be aware of when rsyncing NTFS partitioned drives/files?
Is there a way to Find highlighted text that ONLY begins with a open square bracket? I've tried using the square bracket as a wildcard, but it won't find any adjoining words.
For example, I have a document containing conditional paragraphs, in squared brackets, with the "name" of the paragraph highlighted at the beginning:
"[Document to return Thank you for sending the documents requested earlier.]"
(the section in bold is highlighted in blue in Word)
Is there a way to find "[Document to return"?
I hope this makes sense
Thanks in advance

Has anyone used e-readers to read technical doc/books saved as pdf? I have books saved in pdf formats and looking for a device to read them on other than my computer.
example kindle, ipad, nook, etc
My prior experience with servers has generally been limited to home file-sharing servers, low-traffic web-servers, and the like. This leaves me with the technical knowledge of how to set up a system, but little experience in terms of scaling said system.
My current project, however, has me as the technical lead in setting up a school for online audio and video streaming. The difficulty I'm running into is that I don't quite have the experience to guess what they'll need, and they don't have the experience to tell me - so I've tried to ask as many pertinent questions about what they want to do with their server, and here's what I found out:
About 1000 simultaneous users, and hoping to expand (possibly significantly)
Both video and audio streaming, at obviously the highest quality possible
Support for both live and playlist-based streaming.
Probably only one channel, but as it's an educational opportunity, I imagine letting them have a few more wouldn't hurt.
No word on whether they're locked into Windows or whether Linux is acceptable.
Approximate budget - $7000. It may actually be about $2k less than this, because of a mishap with another technology firm (they ordered a $7000 DV tape deck for some reason, and now the company wants them to pay a 30% restocking fee).
The tentative decisions I've already made:
I'm planning on using Icecast 2 for my streaming server, fed by VLC Shoutcast encoding.
Since the school already has a DMZ set up, I plan on placing the Icecast server in there, and feeding it through their intranet from a simple workstation computer in their studios.
This system isn't in any way mission critical - it's an education tool (they're a media magnet school), so I figure redundancy is not worthwhile to them from a cost:benefit perspective.
What I don't know is this:
How powerful of a server will I need?
What is likely to be my major throttle - bandwidth? How can I mitigate that?
Will I need anything special for the encoding workstation other than professional video and audio capture cards and a copy of VLC?
Are there any other considerations that I'm simply missing?
Thanks a lot for any help - if there's more information you need, let me know and I'll tell you all I can.
This is an external drive, formerly a boot drive which is now in use only to access music files (sibelius, audio, midi, live, logic etc.) without transferring the data into a new boot system, partly because of the issue I am about to describe, but mostly because the majority of the data is mainly there for archival purposes. The user is a composer and prominent musician and needs to be able to rehash the data at will.
I have tried several things - here is a list:
- make complete filesystem clone with antonio diaz's ddrescue
- run Disk Warrior on copy, repair whatever errors occurred
- wipe out all ACLs on entire drive
- set all permissions to the same value - wide open 777
- remove any system data (applications, system files, including hidden files to the best of my knowledge) by selecting only non-system/app data and using Carbon Copy Cloner to put only the data of interest onto a newly formatted drive
- transfer data to newly formatted drive folder by folder, resetting the spotlight index in between adding each to observe for issues (interesting here is that no issues occurred except for in Documents folder - when I transferred only the Documents folder to a newly formatted drive on its own - no trouble. It appears almost as thought it may not be the content but the quantity or specific combination of data that results in problems)
- use DataRescue to transfer the data to yet another newly formatted drive to expose any missed hidden files
Between each of the above steps I stopped Spotlight (search for anything beginning with md in Activity Monitor - All Processes and quitting it), deleted the .Spotlight-V100 directory from the affected drive. Restart Splotlight indexing by adding drive to Spotlight privacy list and removing it.
In each case the same issue occurs - Spotlight begins indexing normally (or so it seems), then the index estimated time increases, usually to 4 hours remaining. This is where it gets stuck and continues to predict 4 hours remaining but never finishes. Sometimes I can't eject the drive and have to quit the md.. processes from Activity Monitor to be able to eject the drive without Force Eject. Once I disconnect the drive after the 4 hours remaining situation - if I reattach it, Spotlight forever estimates remaining time and never gets going again.
So there it is.
It is apparently not a filesystem issue, not a permissions issue and not tied to any particular piece of hardware or protocol (used USB and FW drives). I have tried this on several machines (3 to be precise) and in 10.5.8 and 10.6.5.
Simply disabling Spotlight on this volume is not an option because the owner has no clue where things are as the data on the volume dates back to music projects and compositions from 2003 and before. He needs to be able to query for results.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,
M
Changing hard disk with ssd, can I migrate contents so that I can switch drives without a hassle?
For instance, keep my Windows configuration and installed programs and documents
Hello
All of the question I would like to ask is pretty much contained in the title...
I have a couple Truecrypt-encrypted folders on OS X, where I keep some .tex documents I edit in TeXShop, and the question is: does TexShop 'bleed' information? Does it store temporary files anywhere else on the system? Filenames, filecontents etc.
Cheers!
My sister still has Win XP. She tried to print a document on her USB printer and now it's stuck in the printing queue. I tried the following:
Restart the computer
Restart the printer
Delete the entry from the printing queue
From the printing queue choose Printer\Cancel All Documents
Right click the print job and choose Pause
The status of the printing job now reads "Deleting - Paused - Printing".
Nothing I do seems to get rid of this stuck printing job.
What should I do?
Does Word Viewer 2007 exists (with new Ribbon interface)?
I ask this because only thing I found so far is Word Viewer 2007 as a Viewer 2003 with compatibility packs (which looks like standad Office 2003), but that doesn't works very well for my documents.
Thanks
I am trying to find the word count of a specific word in a collection of documents, in Linux.
I have tried with grep and ack-grep in combination with wc but I can't seem to come up with a valid combination of pipes :)
Hiya,
I am experiencing problems when opening some word documents.
The filename will randomly automatically change to the temp file that is created whilst editing the document.
MS Word is not crashing and it doesnt happen for everyone on our network that I know of.
Can anyone shed some light on why it would do this?
Thanks
I have this port on my laptop and I have no idea what is it used for. It's not even listen in the laptop technical specifications. The laptop is a HP Pavillion dv5-1101en.
