• Can a grails controller extend from a base class? How to make it so grails doesn't blow up?

  I wrote a base class to help build my controllers more quickly and to remove duplication. It provides some helper methods, default actions and some meta programming to make these things easier to build. One of those methods in the base class is like this: def dynamicList(Class clazz) { def model = new LinkedHashMap() model[getMapString(clazz) + "s"] = list(clazz) model[getMapString(clazz) + "sTotal"] = count(clazz) model } The action that calls it, also in the base class, is this: def list = { dynamicList(clazz) } Unfortunately, when I go to list action in the controller subclass that inherits the base class when my application is deployed, I get this exception: groovy.lang.MissingMethodException: No signature of method: groovy.lang.MissingMethodException.dynamicList() is applicable for argument types: (java.lang.Class) values: [class project .user.User] at project.user.UserController$_closure1.doCall(UserController.groovy:18) at project.user.UserController$_closure1.doCall(UserController.groovy) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) How can I hit grails over the head and just tell it do what I want it to do? • Suggest books/learning path for writing smartphone apps

  I have been writing a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript lately working on a website, and I would like to move on to 'proper' OOP with an eye to making smartphone apps. I would like to at least cover iPhone and BlackBerry, which means learning Objective C, Cocoa and Java, before learning the specifics of interacting with the devices themselves, such as native bluetooth/GPS/internet API/methods. I would appreciate pointers to books or resources that will get me from a procedural web developer to object oriented app-maker. Most of the reviews of books on Objective C and Java have been mixed. I am about to start working my way through Beginning Java Objects (APress) which I have borrowed from my brother, so even if it's not a good intro at least it was free!

• JMS without JNDI?

  We are running portlets in WebSphere 6.01, using Java 1.4. We want to send JMS messages to a JBoss 5 queue, running Java 5 (or maybe 6, but it's certainly newer than 1.4). Trying to connect using JNDI is not working, since we have to include the JBoss client jars in the classpath of the portlet, and they are Java 1.5. So I get an unsupported major/minor error when I try to create the InitialContext. Can we connect straight to JBoss without using JNDI? Or is there some way to get around this issue I can't think of?

• Is there a good reflection library available for Scala?

  I'm working on a library that needs reflection, and needs Scala-specific information as opposed to what is available via the standard Java reflection API. Right now I'm using the undocumented code in scalap (the Scala equivalent to javap) and trying to associate the data it provides with Java reflection objects so that I can call methods and such (scalap just parses class files). I found this but there's nothing there... https://github.com/dubochet/scala-reflection ...and I've searched the Scala SVN repo for traces of it and failed to find it there, either (but it could be I just missed it). Does anyone know of a Scala reflection library that provides information similar to what scalap provides but also allows you to call methods, access fields, etc like the Java reflection library?

• &lt;%: %&gt;, HtmlEncode, IHtmlString and MvcHtmlString

  One of my colleague and friend, Robin is playing and struggling with the ASP.NET MVC 2 on a project these days while I’m struggling with a annoying client. Since it’s his first time to use ASP.NET MVC he was meetings with a lot of problem and I was very happy to share my experience to him. Yesterday he asked me when he attempted to insert a <br /> element into his page he found that the page was rendered like this which is bad. He found his <br /> was shown as a part of the string rather than creating a new line. After checked a bit in his code I found that it’s because he utilized a new ASP.NET markup supported in .NET 4.0 – “<%: %>”. If you have been using ASP.NET MVC 1 or in .NET 3.5 world it would be very common that using <%= %> to show something on the page from the backend code. But when you do it you must ensure that the string that are going to be displayed should be Html-safe, which means all the Html markups must be encoded. Otherwise this might cause an XSS (cross-site scripting) problem. So that you’d better use the code like this below to display anything on the page. In .NET 4.0 Microsoft introduced a new markup to solve this problem which is <%: %>. It will encode the content automatically so that you will no need to check and verify your code manually for the XSS issue mentioned below. But this also means that it will encode all things, include the Html element you want to be rendered. So I changed his code like this and it worked well. After helped him solved this problem and finished a spreadsheet for my boring project I considered a bit more on the <%: %>. Since it will encode all thing why it renders correctly when we use “<%: Html.TextBox(“name”) %>” to show a text box? As you know the Html.TextBox will render a “<input name="name" id="name" type="text"/>” element on the page. If <%: %> will encode everything it should not display a text box. So I dig into the source code of the MVC and found some comments in the class MvcHtmlString. 1: // In ASP.NET 4, a new syntax <%: %> is being introduced in WebForms pages, where <%: expression %> is equivalent to 2: // <%= HttpUtility.HtmlEncode(expression) %>. The intent of this is to reduce common causes of XSS vulnerabilities 3: // in WebForms pages (WebForms views in the case of MVC). This involves the addition of an interface 4: // System.Web.IHtmlString and a static method overload System.Web.HttpUtility::HtmlEncode(object). The interface 5: // definition is roughly: 6: // public interface IHtmlString { 7: // string ToHtmlString(); 8: // } 9: // And the HtmlEncode(object) logic is roughly: 10: // - If the input argument is an IHtmlString, return argument.ToHtmlString(), 11: // - Otherwise, return HtmlEncode(Convert.ToString(argument)). 12: // 13: // Unfortunately this has the effect that calling <%: Html.SomeHelper() %> in an MVC application running on .NET 4 14: // will end up encoding output that is already HTML-safe. As a result, we're changing out HTML helpers to return 15: // MvcHtmlString where appropriate. <%= Html.SomeHelper() %> will continue to work in both .NET 3.5 and .NET 4, but 16: // changing the return types to MvcHtmlString has the added benefit that <%: Html.SomeHelper() %> will also work 17: // properly in .NET 4 rather than resulting in a double-encoded output. MVC developers in .NET 4 will then be able 18: // to use the <%: %> syntax almost everywhere instead of having to remember where to use <%= %> and where to use 19: // <%: %>. This should help developers craft more secure web applications by default. 20: // 21: // To create an MvcHtmlString, use the static Create() method instead of calling the protected constructor. The comment said the encoding rule of the <%: %> would be: If the type of the content is IHtmlString it will NOT encode since the IHtmlString indicates that it’s Html-safe. Otherwise it will use HtmlEncode to encode the content. If we check the return type of the Html.TextBox method we will find that it’s MvcHtmlString, which was implemented the IHtmlString interface dynamically. That is the reason why the “<input name="name" id="name" type="text"/>” was not encoded by <%: %>. So if we want to tell ASP.NET MVC, or I should say the ASP.NET runtime that the content is Html-safe and no need, or should not be encoded we can convert the content into IHtmlString. So another resolution would be like this. And the page rendered correctly.         Summary In this post I explained a bit about the new markup in .NET 4.0 – <%: %> and its usage. I also explained a bit about how to control the page content, whether it should be encoded or not. • Unable to connect to Wireless after installing Ubuntu 12.10

  I am using Asus U56E laptop and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8, I am unable to connect to the Wireless. I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated. • Grails deploy on Tomcat6

  Hello, while trying to deploy a Grails application into tomcat6 I ran into some problems: I used the grails war command to build up a war, then copied it to var/lib/tomcat6/webapps and tried to restart the container. I had to change default Tomcat policy to skip security exceptions, since I couldn't access environment variable (like grails.env), then tried again but it gives me an exception related to instantiating something, but it's not clear where should I try to fix the error, according to tomcat6 logs the problem is: SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.context.GrailsC$ org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'pluginManager' defined in ServletContext$ at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) Caused by: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.exceptions.NewInstanceCreationException: Could not create a new instance of class [Hiberna$ ... 1 more Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.hibernate.cfg.Environment It seems like it's unable to load org.hibernate.cfg.Environment class. I checked the applicationContext.xml and it refers to grails.xml to search for plugins, in this last file I actually have HibernateGrailsPlugin. Where should I look to find if the plugin is present?

• Spring struts and forms

  Hi guy, I need to integrate struts with spring for a project. I read the doc to ingrate struts and it's ok for classic beans but I have a problem for my forms. I have a form like this in my struts-config.xml: <form-beans> <form-bean name="creationForm" type="org.apache.struts.validator.DynaValidatorActionForm" > <form-property name="libelle" type="java.lang.String" /> <form-property name="quantite" type="java.lang.String" /> <form-property name="prix" type="java.lang.String" initial="10" /> </form-bean> But it's strange for me to have a "type" in struts-config because it's spring which manages beans. I don't found anything in the doc to manage forms by spring and the attribute "type" is mandatory for form in struts-config. Someone can help me please ?

• Ubuntu 12.04 + Wifi not working

  i'm having problems connecting over wireless. At the moment, I'm using wicd. It seems to get stuck on "Verifying AP association...". Without wicd I can get the connection up and ping the Net - but if I take eth0 down (ifconfig eth0 down), my wireless goes away too (same result if I unplug the wire instead). wicd is the only way I can bring eth0 back (which is the main reason I'm using it) - ifconfig eth0 and/or ifup eth0 do not re-enable the connection (I just discovered it leaves out the gateway. Adding the gateway back in re-enables the connection including wifi; I didn't want to delete the info about wicd above in case it gives someone an idea.) • Using SalesForce's Web Service to create and set the type of a Task

  I am successfully creating a Task using the SalesForce API SOAP API through Java. However, my problem is that I can't seem to set the Type of it. They all default to "Call" but I really want them to be "Email". Can someone point me in the direction of where I can do this? I think it is to do with RecordTypeMapping, but i am somewhat confused as to how to use this in my Java code to look up the particular one for Task type. I feel I have got so close with this. I have the correct WSDL that is giving me the extra method on the Task.java class, but no matter what I pass in, it dies. This doesn't seem to be a huge ask, yet i am perplexed as to which dots to join to get it to work Any help would be appreciated. thanks

• Embed remote desktop in browser

  I would like to embed a Remote Desktop session within my browser. I must use remote desktop because my clients can't install any additional software on the server. Here are some problems that I can already foresee: 1) I believe that I can embed an RDP ActiveX control, but then all I could support is IE. And even then, IE lockdown may forbid ActiveX controls. 2) I don't know anything about Apple computers, but I presume that they don't inherently run RDP? 3) I think there are ways to run RDP through a Java control. I don't have experience to know if this is a good or bad idea. I suppose that Java may even be disabled on some browsers, but don't know if this is a common case? So, what options have I got here to make this work reliably? I presume that I may need some default options (ie ActiveX), and then some fallback options (ie Java), and code to identify the correct option each time.

• Why is there no .NET Community Process?

  I was doing some research into general topics of software engineering and I came across the Java Community Process website: The JCP is the mechanism for developing standard technical specifications for Java technology. Anyone can register for the site and participate in reviewing and providing feedback for the Java Specification Requests (JSRs), and anyone can sign up to become a JCP Member and then participate on the Expert Group of a JSR or even submit their own JSR Proposal. Seems like a good idea to me, and there are lots of very well written specifications and reference implementations on the JCP website. So why is there no .NET Community Process? Is that something that Microsoft could or should start? Maybe they could install it on Codeplex.net and hand over the keys to the community.

• An Actor "queue" ?

  In Java, to write a library that makes requests to a server, I usually implement some sort of dispatcher (not unlike the one found here in the Twitter4J library: http://github.com/yusuke/twitter4j/blob/master/twitter4j-core/src/main/java/twitter4j/internal/async/DispatcherImpl.java) to limit the number of connections, to perform asynchronous tasks, etc. The idea is that N number of threads are created. A "Task" is queued and all threads are notified, and one of the threads, when it's ready, will pop an item from the queue, do the work, and then return to a waiting state. If all the threads are busy working on a Task, then the Task is just queued, and the next available thread will take it. This keeps the max number of connections to N, and allows at most N Tasks to be operating at the same time. I'm wondering what kind of system I can create with Actors that will accomplish the same thing? Is there a way to have N number of Actors, and when a new message is ready, pass it off to an Actor to handle it - and if all Actors are busy, just queue the message?

I want to learn Python now to broaden my career opportunities and just because I like programming. :) When learning Java, I used a site (lost the URL/real name now), something like "Java for PHP developers" that had all on one side of the page the PHP code, and on the other side the Java code to do the same thing. At one point in my document, I had to reformat for a single listing by \lstset{commentstyle=\footnotesize\textit} \lstset{basicstyle=\ttfamily\fontsize{11}{12}\selectfont} \lstset{literate= {!=} {$\neq$}{2}} Now I have the problem that my previous Java formatting for listings is destroyed, and I dont know how to reset the lst settings to default. How can this be avoided?

• Eclipse RCP standalone export problem with Groovy scripts

  I am trying to export a standalone RCP app using Eclipse 3.5.2. The app has a main pure Java plug-in, and a Java / Groovy plug-in that is used by the main plug-in. When I export the main RCP plug-in using the "Export Wizard", I get compiler errors saying that the Groovy classes cannot be found, e.g ERROR in C:\mysrc\src\ch\calcs\providers\CalcProvider.java (at line 8) import ch.calcs.ArgSet; This plug-in works fine when run from within Eclipse. Any ideas?

• Opinions sought on the best way to organise classes in PHP

  I am pretty much set on using the Java package naming convention of com.website.app.whatever but am unsure about the best way of doing this in PHP. Option 1: Create a directory structure com/ mysite/ myapp/ encryption/ PublicKeyGenerator.class.php Cipher.class.php Xml/ XmlHelper.class.php XmlResponse.class.php Now this is how Java does it, it uses the folders to organize the heirarchy. This is however a little clumsy in PHP because there is no native support for it and when you move things around you break all includes. Option 2 Name classes using a periods for the package, therefore sames are just like in Java but can all be in the same directory making __autoload a breeze. classes/ com.mysite.myapp.encription.PublicKeyGenerator.class.php com.mysite.myapp.encription.Cipher.class.php com.mysite.myapp.xml.XmlHelper.class.php com.mysite.myapp.xml.XmlResponse.class.php The only real disadvantage here is that all the classes are in a single folder which might be confusing for large projects. Opinions sought, which is the best or are there other even better options?

• Installing ADT plugin 16.0.1 on Eclipse Indigo- windows

  When I try to install the ADT 16.0.1 plugin on Eclipse Indigo java developer edition release 1 or Helios normal edition release 2, I get the following error: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. This's not my first time installing ADT, I already have it installed on Ubuntu and it works. I also had the old release (ADT 15) installed on Eclipse galileo on windows, but I re-installed windows (i'm running windows 7 ultimate by the way) and I can run the old release but it's very good developing with ICS API-s. So, if anyone could help, it would be highly appreciated.

  I am planning to use Drizzle in my next C# Mono app. Since there is no C# client available for Drizzle, I thought I would have a stab at writing my own by converting the Java client, and then making it work with DBLinq. Having seen the Java client, I realise that it's a longer job that I had anticipated, and I don't have the time. Besides the Java client is not all that mature yet. Since there is an official Drizzle C client library (libdrizzle), writing a C# wrapper might be the best solution. Are there any tools available that can assist in generating the code for this?

  i notice that Java has a number of ancillary scripting languages. Clojure and Groovy for example. My understanding is that these can be used when the full might and power of Java does not need to be applied and a speedy cludge can be hacked in Groovy/Clojure. But at the end of the day the scripting tools contribution gets compiled into the application Question 1) Is there a similar scripting in x-code? I was not so interested in Python or Ruby in this situation as they are languages in their own right added in, as indeed i think can happen in Java, but i was looking for a purpose built tools. Question 2) If there is such a tool would it count the application out vis-a-vis the new Apple guidelines as to what can be used to generate iXxx apps?
