• Should I have a heroku worker dyno for poll a AWS SQS?

  Im confusing about where should I have a script polling an Aws Sqs inside a Rails application. If I use a thread inside the web app probably it will use cpu cycles to listen this queue forever and then affecting performance. And if I reserve a single heroku worker dyno it costs $34.50 per month. It makes sense to pay this price for it for a single queue poll? Or it's not the case to use a worker for it?   Can ECC registered RAM 512 MB DDR-400 be used on thin clients - specifically Neoware CA10/CA22? Neoware thin clients (now HP Thin clients e100/e140) have 2 slots for a max of 1 Gb of DDR-400 RAM (184 Pin PC3200). I notice that the price of ECC reg RAM is considerably less than that of non-reg RAM ($10 for ECC reg 512 MB vs $24 for non-ECC reg 512 MB) so this approach is worth it for me to upgrade my memory on numerous thin clients (approx 40). The BIOS is Phoenix E686 and the chipset is VIA 800MHz - 1 Ghz.

  Hello, I am new to colocation. I am looking for a good place to host my server that would have around 5-10 Source Servers (Team Fortress 2). I am looking at maybe around 90 players at a time for now, players coming from all over the United States Could I get more info on what I am suppose to look for exactly? Would it be correct for me to get a 100Mb/s line and does 100Mb/s line in the following example actually be 100Mb/s upload bandwidth? I do not want to have to ever worry about going over some bandwidth limit or any DDOS attacks killing me. • Recommendation for PCI SATA addon card?

  I have a couple of dead PCs from my wife's office that have working SATA HDDs. Sorry, I don't know if they're SATA I or II, just that they're SATA. Unfortunately, all my spare hardware at home is pretty old; all I have is IDE support. I was thinking I could get a PCI addon card on the cheap that would support SATA and put together a budget server of sorts to play with and be able to use those drives. So I've got a couple questions: After some searching it looks like I can get an addon card for ~20 bucks, but it looks like they're all SATA I? Would that matter? It looks like going to SATAII bumps the price up to $40-$60 or so. Are there any recommendations on a card to get?

• Broadcomm WIDCOMM A2DP Quality Adjustment

  So I got a sweet pair of bluetooth A2DP headphones for a sweet, sweet price (Motorola A805, if you were wondering). They sound great paired with an iPhone. However, when I pair with a computer using the latest and greatest WIDCOMM drivers, the quality is quite poor, almost un-listenable... clicking, popping, scratching. The remedy on one machine was using BlueSoleil, another bluetooth stack, as there is an adjustment for the Bitpool settings that allow you to jack the quality up. Sounds great. However, the bluetooth chipset in my other machine is not supported by BlueSoleil... so I'm stuck with the WIDCOMM stack. So the question is... Is there an undocumented way to turn up the quality for A2DP in the WIDCOMM drivers? first question on SU, usually lurking on SO.. =]

  I'm considering setting up a PC as a Media Center. Mainly to watch movies (ideally HD quality) and listening to music, but also to perform tasks like e-mail, web browsing, ... I quite like the looks and the price of this barebone: http://www.asus.de/Barebone_PC/S_Series_7L/S2P8H61E However it comes with integrated graphics and audio and only has one free PCI-Express slot. Which would mean in the worst case, where both integrated graphics and audio turn out to be insufficient, I could only upgrade one.   Hello. This is about hosting a web portal. Earlier my topology was entirely based on Amazon AWS but the price factor (especially for EC2) now makes me re-think. I'll now quickly come to what I have finally arrived at. I'll launch the portal that'll be hosted on Godaddy (unlimited plan on Windows). The portal uses SimpleDB for storing metadata and S3 for blobs. Locally available MySQL will be used for the ASP.Net provider services. Once the portal is profitable, I intent to move to Amazon in totality. Now considering the proximity between Godaddy & Amazon, would I face 'substantial' performance problems? Are there any suggestions to improve upon my topology.

• Renting an "EC2" server VS buying one (for a start up in initial stages)

  We are a small start up in the early stages and are working on a SaaS-based Rails product. Currently, we use EC2 for a small instance and have a need for another large/extra-large instance as we are beginning to deploy to the Cloud and get ready to release our "alpha" version. While EC2 was my choice for numerous reasons (reliability, accessibility - small team is geographically dispersed, maintainability, and things of that nature), it appears to be rather expensive. While the product will ultimately be deployed in the Cloud (be it EC2 or otherwise) and that experience would help the development team, would it make sense to purchase a physical server and stick it in the basement or bite the bullet and pay the price for EC2 (or other Cloud Providers)? While such decisions are driven by numerous factors, it would certainly help to get the thoughts of other folks who may have been in similar situations. Hence, the post. Thanks much!

  I'm looking to set-up a UPS on a Windows Small Business Berver 2k8 and I've noticed that there are some large price differences for similar capacity in-line UPSs. The most important point for me in UPS selection is that the server should have the ability to shut itself down before the UPS power runs out, so that if the server is unattended during the outage, it should minimize the risk of data loss. From some reading it appears that Windows Server 2008 should has the ability to natively recognise a UPS, which can then be managed through the battery settings on the server or via WMI. What I'm wondering if anyone know is, Is Windows 2008 servers UPS support specific to certain brands of UPS (eg, APC) or is it likely to work with any UPS which has a USB port, which I can connect to the server?

  Hi, jungledisk is owned by rackspace and offers an option to choose Amazon S3 which charges for traffic whereby if data is stored on rackspace, no charges for traffic. For a small company, to just backup files with jungle disk from ubuntu linux OS computers, i wonder what to choose. Commercial psychologically the price on traffic and the Amazon brand make it appear or maybe it is, of better quality than the cheaper Rackspace offer which is when it comes for just backing up ok ? but if its about backing up around 30 GB which updates from time to time, what would you consider a good choice ?

  I am lost on choosing a good miotherboard at a decent price for my Intel i7-930 CPU. I have read bad things about all of them so far. Issues with RAM not working correctly, Windows not loading with USB keyboards plugged in and all kinds of nightmare stories. Here is my needs. - 6g/b SATA 3 - USB 3.0 - Cheaper is better - Support for up to 24gb of RAM, I will start out with only 12gb though - I will use 64bit v. of Windows 7 so the 4gb RAM limit should not be a problem from my OS - Should be able to boot even if I have a USB keyboard plugged in. If you have experience with a motherboard that meets these specs, please do tell about it. I appreciate any help, I am stuck right now on picking a good board.

  I lost my USB bluetooth dongle (from HP) which I used for a wireless keyboard and mouse. They came together in a set when I bought my last HP computer. Are the keyboard and mouse useless now? or will any bluetooth dongle allow them to work? If I can just buy a new one - any recommendations on a replacement (good price, and perhaps works with Windows and Ubuntu out-of-the-box? Forgive me if this is an easy question. • Lightweight, low cost enterprise backup solution

  Looking for a backup solution primarily for Windows clients (XP/7), that will either back up to 2 different servers (1 on site, 1 off site - internet - can be our own server), or back up to 1 server and then we would need to somehow backup that server offsite/internet. By lightweight, I mean the backup client software should not eat up much memory and processor since some of the client machines are older. I am used to using Crashplan for home use - the pricing is nice for the amount of backup I get, and it works great / easy to install and get going - I can back up to my own machines locally and over the net. However, the price is going to be a little steep for enterprise level backup, 1500+ machines. Possibly ZManda and Bacula are good choices to consider? Are they light weight? Can the clients/agents be set to go over the net and/or multiple backup servers?

  I'm considering buying a 2bay NAS for media storage. I'm perplexed by the variety of prices. They go from about $115 to $1200. The only thing I could see that differentiated the high end drive was encryption and a dual gigabit ethernet port. I don't understand how that can add up to $800+ dollars.   So I've got this spreadsheet open using OpenOffice Calc (ver 3.3.0) and its set up a little like this: A B C D 1.name quantity price total 2.foo 10 10 100 3.bar 20 6 120 4.red 30 7 210 Each cell in the "total" column is obtained by multiplying the two cells to the left of it, and what I'm trying to do is to get it so that Calc highlights the highest value in the total column (even better if it could highlight the entire row). I've tried using MAX(D1:D4) in the Conditional Formatting section, but it highlights multiple values. How do I get it to highlight just the highest value?

• How do I make a Windows virtual machine replicate to another datacenter/cloud?

  We have a Windows 2008 VM running IIS and SQL Server Express (it's an all-in-one web application). We need to have another copy at our secondary datacenter site. What is the best way to do this? It doesn't have to be running all the time but it has to have almost the latest copy of the current VM. I took a look at VMWare Fault Tolerance and after the heart attack at the price I starting looking for another solution. If need be I wouldn't mind copying it over to a cloud VM provider, if I can find one that lets me copy my own VMs up and start them up without any conversion process.

• Recommend a good DVD or BD replacement drive that can read older CD-R/DVD+R media?

  So I have a bunch of older CD-R (and a few DVD+R) discs that are either suffering from "bit rot", or a case of crappy no-name Chinese DVD drives being unable to read some or all of anymore. I just threw my last no-name DVD drive in the trash after it ejected a disk still spinning causing it to scratch to the point of being useless, so I'm looking for a replacement drive this time around with an eye for quality over a dirt cheap price. I'd prefer a BD drive, but I'll take any suggestions for good, reliable DVD or BD drives that people have reported having good success with for reading older burned media. Any takers?

I have a little question, I'm actually studing in IT in France, and when looking on alternative on the very [...] very expensive Cisco equipment, I've found Juniper and DELL PowerConnect pretty attractive on features and price, but I rarely see something else than the classics Cisco/LinkSys, HP Procurve and Netgear.. Why it's so rare to find those switch ? They looks really great but... I've never seen any Juniper or Powerconnect... Why do enterprises stick with the expensive Cisco ? I've tried to find how to buy both, it's quite easy with PowerConnect, everything is on the DELL website, but it looks it's very hard to find Juniper equipment in France :( Thank you !

• Thermal risks to other components when watercooling CPU

  I recently ordered all the components for a new desktop system to replace my old, dying computer. I wanted to have a really quiet desktop, so I got a case rated for being quiet and opted to try a closed-system CPU water cooling kit (Antec Kuhler H2O 620) that was on sale for a very good price over the Thanksgiving weekend. Most of my components are still in transit, but I became somewhat worried when a friend mentioned that abandoning air cooling units can result in heat buildup inside the case due to heat generated by the video card and other components such as RAM, the northbridge, MOSFETs and voltage regulators radiating heat that the CPU fan would normally at least keep circulating around so it doesn't build up in localized areas. Is this a realistic problem? What other precautions should I take to remove heat from other components? Adding more case fans seems like it would get really noisy. Are there quiet alternatives?

  Hi, I've been having a problem for a while now with VMWare Workstaion. (Originally with 6.5, but now with 7.0 and 7.0.1 too). The problem occurs when I choose to shut down a guest. VMWare itself seems to hang. If I choose to shut down a guest that's opened full screen, and during the process I minimise the screen to work on other applications in the host, often (not all the time) when I return to the guest I have a 'greyed out' screen and the system becomes unresponsive. The host O/S still seems to be working, but I am unable to switch to other applications. (I can bring up the taskbar on the host and 'see' other applications and even switch to them, but VMWare still stays 'on top' being unresponsive). I can not terminate VMWare even when windows says that the application has become unresponsive and gives me the option to terminate. VMWare stays on top, and I'm forced to either shutdown, or log off and log back on in order to regain control of my computer. This happens with both Windows 7 and Windows Vista guest operating systems (32 bit), and I have had it happen on multiple host machines, and multiple guest machines too. Current Host: Windows 7 64 bit, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD, i7 Processor. I have been searching for more than 6 months for a solution but have found none, so finally decided to post here. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem (+or even how to minimize the VM so I can at least access any other applications and save work before forcing a logoff / reboot+) would be extrememly handly. If I know the correct keystrokes to save and close in an application on the host I can do this by task-switching to the desired app to save and close successfully, but I can't see what I'm doing because VMWare Workstation is still on-top 'greyed' out.
